When people ask me why I’ve seen them 46-47 times, I send them this video. No, I wasn’t there, I’ve actually never seen this level of passion out of Dave, this is insanely special still to this day. Fuck man. Amazing. I miss Roi/Boyd.
Anyone paying attention misses a band member. I'm not ready to spell out the name. I have not let go. I languish in the times that allowed me to enjoy music.
Absolutely incredible. And the craziest thing is I was at the Saratoga show the night before this for my very first Dave show in 2001 I was 13..i was one day away from experiencing the most incredible Dave moment by one day. Nothing tops this. Boyd's face when Dave is going makes me laugh and cry at the same time he has this look that is absolutely pure joy and awe to be up there in that moment. Absolutely mind blowing
Been to 36 DMB shows, listened to thousands of different versions of different songs...this could take the cake as the best version of any song ever by DMB.
Yeah idk. This a great version, but i think musically speaking, their 2002 version from The Gorge is better. If only for Carter's massive gap in technicality from this version to that. Either way u put it tho they ALWAYS NAIL this song and is one of if not the best in their entire catalogue imo
Troy Schonover That's what I love about dmb at the Gorge. We travel from all over the country to see dmb at the most beautiful amphitheater. Glad you had a great time, everyone who goes, does!
Do we know the story behind this? I once heard the band and road crew and others were all dealing with team tensions etc. and before this show it was heated, so this came out of Dave
I've probably watched this video 10-20 times in the past few years, but today for some reason, it stirs up tears. I don't know why and I'm not questioning it. DMB = #1 forever
I’ve listened to this version more times than I can count and almost every time it hits me so hard that I tear up. The emotion portrayed in this version is unmatched!
Quite possibly the best live DMB performance of all time. It’s amazing to me that Dave can sing at all anymore after belting out like this. He’s clearly blown out his vocal chords bc of the way he went all out like this night after night but i will still go to see them every single time they come around! So many great memories seeing them year after year. Truly one of the best bands of all time
It's quite curious! I'm sure we all take music in different ways! I see your point! This one moves me a lot, but there are many songs the most people loves it and I don't even pay attention on it! Sometimes you have to listen the song in another perspective, maybe you can change your mind.
I believe when the word orgasm was coined this was the definition they had in mind . . . Extraordinary. Otherworldly. Eternally grateful for the creative vein Dave tapped into and has continued to share with the world.
Every single person's soul there came together and created this euphoric moment in time that cannot be recreated. One of the greatest music recording ever
If you ever wanna see the look of pure joy and overcome emotion, then look at Boyd's face at 13:17. Even he couldn't believe the magic they just made. This song is the epitome of why I have loved Dave for 20 years. So incredible. My first show was the night before this at SPAC. I was one show away from being there for this. My show was just amazing I was 13 and hooked forever
two things i remember about seeing this show... well 3, damn it was great to be 18... not anymore :) but seriously... i remember thinking holy cow dave's head might explode he sang so hard, and second was how impeccably perfect Carter's drumming is... every intricate hit, pause, stick pattern... insane... so great to hear again thank you for making me feel young again!
Starting wail 11:59 [11:59] We live, [12:03] part, [12:04] and go on, [12:06] We don't give enough. [12:10] But where? [12:11] Don't leave behind your soul, [12:16] Oh, [12:18] The end left us behind. [12:23] Oh lover, [12:25] Don't leave me, don't leave me alone here [12:36] Lonely life, [12:38] Oh lonely life, [12:39] Don’t leave me, [12:41] Don’t leave me [12:46] One day, [12:48] Only, [12:49] Lover, [12:51] Departed, [12:54] You are departed. [12:56] You are departed from here, [13:00] Oh [13:01] Oh love’s wonderful, [13:07] True love’s more, [13:07] True lover of years old, [13:10] [13:11] [13:13] So alone, [13:15] Alone with this pain, [13:19] And when I caught you there, [13:23] You swore that you were innocent. [13:27] Well, how’s that so, [13:30] When you stole all you could from me, [13:34] And when your last breath was breathed, [13:38] You walked to another place, [13:40] To end together life was strange.
I think it's about the journey through life and then the afterlife. Losing the love of your life makes you feel dead inside, but then when you die you may find that all that pain and suffering you went through was unnecessary as you are reunited with those you loved. "Life was strange"
15 years ago today i saw my first DMB show. Seek up was the opening song (7/8/2000). i started touring to SPAC at the age of 16. I remember seeing this version and watching Dave turn purple wailing. This version is the epitomy of why live music and music in general needs ot be in peoples lives. It is a feeling you cannot get from anything else.
Brian Schmitt so true, going to Alpine Valley in a few days to see him, ur comment rings so true. I remember hearing "song that jane likes" at the Gorge in Washington in 2003 and the hair on my neck still stands up every time I hear that song.
I havent been to a SPAC show but i have been attending the gorge shows for a long time. I feel the same way about the gorge. It is quite the experience.
I won tickets to this show from the kocal radio station &!was the ahole down front who kept yelling "seek up!" --- im so greatful this footage exists! thx for posting!!
10:30 is where I start it every time! When I need a boost to start my day, I listen to this version, goosebumps every time!! Love and miss Boyd soooo much...
Take a look again, take a look again, if I could take it all down to my grave God knows I'd save and save. For soon we will all find our lives swept away
This was my 3rd DMB show and I didn't appreciate how great this was until The Warehouse 5 live track came out with this version on it. 20 years later and I still get emotional every time I listen to it. Pure Perfection!
There are No Words to UNDERSTAND the to meaning and Feeling of it's beauty ,,,it just makes you feel it's emotions and form of something power of true great writing and greatness of the band members how much love they have in there hearts to give to US ,,💓
I've listened to most seek up versions on UA-cam. This by far is the best. No disrespect to current or past members but this lineup in the best. From Boyds haunting violin to Dave's rant and then Lerois filtered octave sax. All kept together by Butch's jazz fed piano.
Listening AGAIN to this masterpiece of a song. Seek Up has always been my favorite DMB song and this version is right up there with the very best. A prime example of when a 20 minute version of a song is not long enough. Thank you DMB ❤
Absolutely magical, words cannot describe how flawless this Seek Up is. Roi was one of a kind, so very very smooth. These days are long gone, they exist now only in our memory and on UA-cam.
Still to this day in 2021 the best song and best opener. Fortunately 21 got alot of seek up . the crowd Singing falling at once then going silent is always a great moment
My good friend Andy Bush took me to see them when we were in our teens at polaris..... unfortunately as time passesso do our friendships. We grow older with a vast array of knowledge and life experience, leaving little room for old places and faces, but we will always have them memories and the music
My fellow Americans - ALL of you. Turn off the hate in your hearts. Take a deep breath and center yourselves. Take 20 minutes to listen this song with an open mind and an open heart. The music. The lyrics. The gut-wrenching wailing. The joy of the crowd at the end. It will move you. Take that feeling with you as you go about your days and weeks and months. Love conquers hate. There is FAR MORE love in this country - in this world - than hate. Always remember that. And remember that we are one Great nation. One love.
O yes and fellow South Africans. Dave has got more South African blood in him so he does not belong to Americans. Love the fact that he actually knows whats its like living outside USA
The most memorable part of the show. I was partying hard but this stuck with me. We were lucky to find an mp3 of the show. Never thought there'd be video as well. Awesome.
To keep this groove, so steady, in this 3/4 time, for almost 20 minutes, is a feat of great musicianship by the whole band. It really GROOVES! Wow!!!!!!
Amazing eclectic one of a kind band ! Love the whole feel of this but the drumming on this is otherworldly. ! The tone textures and dynamics in his touch are so special ! What he does on the hi hat alone is sheer genius ! Can’t explain how much this performance moved me ! Interesting beautiful playing by all. Carter you are a one of a kind musician !
Wow. Been in a Seek Up kinda space for the past few months. Bummed I'm *just* finding this but so grateful I have. The editing on this is perfection too. Thanks as always!
+Patrick Kollmeier I agree I don't listen as much as I did back in the day. Jeff is amazing too...but I just can't get into the vibe since Roi has been gone. Nonetheless....still the best band ever. 🍻
This is perfection. Here is my take on the wailing part for those who like to try to translate: For years…fight and go on, We don’t give enough, But wait, don’t leave behind your soul! Oh, the end left us behind. Forgive me, oh lover, don’t leave me, Don’t leave me alone again! Lonely life, oh lonely life, Forgive me! Don’t leave me here to die! If only, Holy. (??) Lover! Departed! We are parted! We are parted, Lover! No! Oh Lucifer! Wonderful, lover years old, left us so alone. Oh and ** pain And when I caught you there, You swore that you were innocent, Were that so, and when you stole all you could from me, and when the last breath was breathed, you walked to another place to end together, life was strange.
i have became a dave matthews fan a few years ago and i have been to a concert of his but when i heard this version of this song i knew i was hookd on this band. they remind me of the greatful dead. cant wait to see them again.
@laurah.160 0 seconds ago Our Mother has behavioral FTD and the disease tried to kill me and my sister. Your music saved us and kept us alive. I love you Leslie . Thank you DMB

This is THE version of Seek Up in my book
Mother of christ. If that doesn't move you nothing will. Unreal.
Different every time...and always so special. Missing the sweet sound of the Groo Grux King every time i watch this. Thanks a a million Chester!!!!!

I'm still not buying anything, Robin.
“Mother of Christ” 🤣😂
That intro from LeRoi is beyond outrageous. And seriously, is there anyone better than Carter? The tightest nuanced drummer I’ve ever heard.
Been to 36 DMB shows, listened to thousands of different versions of different songs...this could take the cake as the best version of any song ever by DMB.
I agree, I have two all time top DMD songs / versions on my list, it's this one and this version of Dreaming Tree /watch?v=6ecZL8TBox4
14 shows here so def behind but I agree
the bartender from the night roi passed takes the cake

the bass line plays a huge role in this song

This version is like a hypnotic trance. It’s so perfect, even when he flubs the lyrics a little. Pure bliss.

this song has been my inspiration for over two decades. the words I'm not here to please you or appease you will be on my tombstone.
I think 14:45 is really when the chills come in. Sooo miss that man and his sax.
+Jenni Fraker Amazing they are still playing and I don't listen near as much as I used to, but damn, Leroi was the MAN
+Patrick Kollmeier I agree I don't listen as much as I did back in the day. Jeff is amazing too...but I just can't get into the vibe since Roi has been gone. Nonetheless....still the best band ever. 🍻
agreed
Yes
It is like Roi is shrouded in a ghostly mist during his solo,.
Oh an add in the middle of this is a crime
This is the peak of DMB, their best years..very good
Oh and I love how you can hear the crowd singing along at the beginning. Gives me chills.
This was my first show, when I was 14
Carters drumming is otherworldly. Had a stank face on the whole time. Seems like everyday (pun intended) I’m discovering a new gem from DMB.
This is on Warehouse 5 Vol. 2 :D
Thanks, I need a copy
This is perfection. Here is my take on the wailing part for those who like to try to translate:
For years…fight and go on,
We don’t give enough,
But wait, don’t leave behind your soul!
Oh, the end left us behind.
Forgive me, oh lover, don’t leave me,
Don’t leave me alone again!
Lonely life, oh lonely life,
Forgive me!
Don’t leave me here to die!
If only, Holy.
(??)
Lover! Departed!
We are parted! We are parted, Lover!
No! Oh Lucifer!
Wonderful, lover years old, left us so alone.
Oh and ** pain
And when I caught you there,
You swore that you were innocent,
Were that so, and when you stole all you could from me,
and when the last breath was breathed,
you walked to another place to end together,
life was strange.
Damn! Well done!
Wow! Made an already powerful song even more so...thank you.
Chills
my favorite DMB song. certainly an epic performance.
Bruh that was crazy
I actually teared up during parts. I'm a dude and dudes don't cry, but I almost did. Reason #764 why I love this band!!
I’ve been to 40 shows and have cried at every. Single. One.
i have became a dave matthews fan a few years ago and i have been to a concert of his but when i heard this version of this song i knew i was hookd on this band. they remind me of the greatful dead. cant wait to see them again.
Such a whaler of song... it's happy and sad together, but so true of life ..
The fact that this is almost twenty years old verifies that time is in fact speeding up as the universe expands.
The best parts are 0:01-7:57, 7:58-14:44, and 14:45-19:06
James Stark spot on!
You must watch them all!
seriously has Dave ever written better lyrics? i know the song is off the charts good but this poetry.
Best parts to me are 0:00-19:06 lol
Always best with just your ears and the memories.
(If you don't have time to watch it all watch @11:50 ) shit, if you dont have time to watch it all, get your priorities straight !
