We are in Braunschweig visiting Nicole's father... while here, we decided to share a trip around some of the oldest buildings in the city, and in Germany! While wandering around, Craig remembers enjoying a Turkish treat with Nicole over ten years ago, when he first visited the city - WOW! How time flies...
Many of the buildings we look at today, survived the bombings in World War 2 - a great deal of the city was destroyed - others have been and continue to be faithfully restored to their former classic style. We also found a very interesting fact about some buildings constructed 1000 years ago - the Jakob Kemenata we visit is one of only three remaining buildings of its type in the city. These buildings were constructed in two parts - a wooden framed front building, and a rear built of stone. The stone building could be heated - some were used as bowers to house animals, as well as human dwelling. But, the stone houses also offered a protection from fire - if the front of the building was attacked or caught fire, the residents could hide in the back for protection...

We haven't explored any castles in Germany yet and there are beaches too - but quite a bit away from Braunschweig :) Scotland is much more rugged but also colder ;)

Its insane how narrow and low many old European buildings are.
That's very true! I think the narrowest houses might be in the Netherlands!
Enjoyable tour! I can understand that building was old, but holy cow, 40 Euros for breakfast? O.o

Certainly a lot of history attached to the city, worth the visit - no modern day graffiti(am I right Nicole)? Do they have a grade listing system in Germany, also?
I am sure there is some graffiti somewhere but mainly on concrete or under bridges. Yes these buildings are also protected and to restore them there are strict rules :)

@@scottishmudlarking I stay in aberdeen I used to love walking and fishing along the rivers dee and Don. Where I was brought up in summertime there is a stream or burn called the Denbury it would be interesting to walk back along that one day. I can guide you a little bit with its history.x

The beams.
I love old buildings with old beams.
The ,well I call it graffiti,but,presumably it’s woodworkers marks,that you showed at the beginning,wow!
Which leads me to number 2,the PATINA.
That old wood,I just want to touch the smoothness of it,that only comes with time,it is this funny way of verifying,with one’s hands,the very thing that you see with one’s eyes,it is a rare pleasure of the senses.
Thirdly,umm…wel,thirdly,I have forgotten,as I was mezmerized by a quick moment,a moment not needing to be bound by sea swept winds,hair allowed to lay free,across shoulders,allowing an observer to marvel at the otherwise hidden cascade that is Nicole’s hair.
It is delightful 😌

Aww thanks Charles! The old wooden beams sometimes have carvings with mottos in them ( usually about being devout ) . Even when the buildings get restored these are redone in the old style . Some carvings are dates like the ones in the Ritter that says , I believe , 1647 or so!
It's always amazing to walk over stone steps that are 1000 years old and to imagine how many people have walked over them. What conversations might have taken place next to the old city wall... ah if walls could talk!

Schönes Video. Das kenn ich zwar alles aber so schön gefilmt hab ich es noch nicht gesehen. Man läuft ja auch blindlings durch die Stadt und bestaunt nicht jedesmal die schönen alten Gebäude und deren Verzierungen 👍
Ja es ist immer wert nach oben zu schauen! Nach 20 Jahren hat sich die Stadt sehr zum positiven veraendert finde ich :) Soviel schoene Gebaeude und Sachen zu entdecken!
