@The Masked Wolf From everything I have seen and read, her mother didn't treat her to nice. Richard could do no wrong. Really a sad situation for her..
I'm reading Little Girl Blue right now and in it she says her singing was an accident. She so wanted to play drums and sing. They said because she was only 5-4 tall that the audience couldn't see her when she was singing. If they had just let her play drums and sing I think things possibly could have been different. No way of knowing for sure though because she had it in her head that she needed to be thinner. If she had just gotten the support she needed at home it may have turned out so much differently. Such a great loss to the music world.

Karen's mom is to be blamed for her actions. Sadly due to malnutrition she felt ill and died too soon 😢. Her songs are strong the way how she express herself and still does even beyond the grave. Rest In Peace Karen Carpenter.
"Superstar" was recorded by Karen on her first take, singing the lyrics that had been scribbled by Richard onto a napkin. It took a while for Karen to warm up to the song. "For some reason that tune didn't hit me in the beginning," she recalled in a 1981 interview. "It's the only one. Richard looked at me like I had three heads. He said: 'Are you out of your mind?' When I heard his arrangement of it I fell over, and now it's one of my favorites too."

She sang like an angel, and made it sound so easy. She was a great drummer, too! Some of the greatest soft-rock hits of the 70s came from Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard (who played keyboards and sang backing vocals, and arranged the songs). Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song about a woman who falls for a rock star and has a tryst with him but then in a bout of delusion waits for his return and falls for it when he said he loved her. Richard Carpenter modified one line which made the song more mainstream. The line had previously implied the vocalist and musician had slept together so the modified version covered over more of what was really going down between them. She is smitten by this professional musician (superstar) particularly his guitar playing and strikes up a romantic relationship with him. However, he appears to play her and use her for sex and then acts like she doesn’t exist. So that’s why she proclaims her love for him and longs for him to return like he promised. The song implys the probability is that he’s never returning and this heartbreak she’s suffering is something she has to try to deal with.
I heard her say in an interview that there were 3 songs that really got to her and took her to another place and when she finished singing them she had to shake herself out of it. The songs are “Rainy Days and Mondays”, “Superstar” and “I Need to Be in Love”. Her favorite of theirs is “I Need to Be in Love”.
