In 1979 I sold my motorcycle and got a Minimoog Model D. My neighbor had an Arp Odyssey. His Odyssey had a pitch knob above the lowest note on the keyboard. We had so much fun playing them together. I still have my Minimoog. This video brought back some great memories.
Great video! One thing I like about the Odyssey is the fact that you can apply envelope in addition to applying LFO to the pitch. Some synths can't do that. It's a great effect for sci-fi sounds!
When you use it subtly it can also be great for brassy sounds and percussive sounds. Or turn on ring mod and put a quick swoop up or down on a single oscillator, and you get a metallic burst at the beginning of each note.
The MiniMoog can do PWM, you need Osc 2 on Sawtooth and Osc 3 on reverse-sawtooth and detune. The two waveforms do cancel each other out so you need Osc 1 set at pulse to cover it up. On an oscilloscope it looks exactly like PWM.
The Minimoog is just the GOAT, no two ways about it. I love my Behringers, my Grandmother (modern GOAT?) but that damn Mini sound grabs me every time and has something special. It struggles to sound bad.
Wonderful video, Starsky! I bought a MKIII in the 70s; got stolen in the early 80s. Bought a used Minimoog a few years later; long gone now. Have the Behringer Model D now. Would love to get a Korg Odyssey module, or Behringer Odyssey, at some point. This video brought back so many great memories; thanks for doing it!
Never realized Odyssey is as huge as MiniMoog! Plus the tEEth! MiniMoog is the most beautiful piece of furniture I’m my studio (house, world). Looking forward for new Odyssey reissue to make a big black hole of sounds 🎉
Great video Starsky thank you! I have a Korg Arp Odyssey and Behringer Model D, really like them both but wondered whether too much overlap for my limited studio space (prefer the Ody, but use the 440Hz tuner on the Boog to tune the Ody :) ). Learned a lot from your video, especially some sound design that's not immediately intuitive. Thanks!
As a young man watching Manfred Mann mangling his Moog, & Dave Lawson pushing his white Odyssey to its limits, put me on this fantastic ifelong journey. Thank you Mr. Carr.
And thanks to Ulli, I can afford to have both :p But if I had to choose, I think it's the Odyssey for me. I find it more versatile, able to do more beautiful weirdness, and as an industrial devotee I love that grittiness.
Wow nice throwback. I remember a studying Shostakovich episode - can only remember the name and nothing else about it. But I think I’ve earned my name in sweat by now!
Great video, nice to see these two classics go head to head! I would probably add the Mini overdrive trick with spare output patched to input and the Ody's paraphonic capability, ultimately I think I'd keep the Mini too...
Yeah, and duophonic on the Odyssey. 2 things I recorded, but the camera was out of focus 🤦♂️ when I redid it my brain told me I’d already done those bits… then forgot!
I only have a reissue of the D bc I got very lucky with a misprinted price brand new one from a shop and it was too good to pass up. But, before that I bought a brand new one when the 2022 reissues came out and I had the Boog D, and I just couldn’t justify keeping the Moog bc it was essentially 1:1. Also own a Voyager and they were just too close to keep. If you want the sound, you cannot go wrong with the Behringer Model D, promise it. If it wasn’t for dumb luck with grabbing the Moog D for what it should sell at (40% less than it’s priced at rn brand new), I’d still be having an awesome time with the Behringer model d.
Yeah so I finally watched it, it answered a few questions about my Grandmother and Behringer Cat. You're definitely the comparison king! I couldn't get the Cat tuned to play the filter. I'm sure it's me I'll have to give that a go again
Thanks for this great comparison!! I luckily have both re-issues. I think it's great that these legends are available today, again. Apart from the difference in features and sound, the concept of the mighty mini Moog was the template for lot's of synths, even poly synths that followed since the 80ies. However, to me the ARP with his somehow weird layout seems to tackle creativity a bit more.
Everybody tries to make these beauties sound exactly the same. They're not. They are completely different. They both sound magnificent in their own way. Also starskey, the odyssey would be the white faced one as you know. I have the behringer odyssey ( I had an original which is another story) it's great but has bugs. Great vid mate though.
Now more convinced than ever that I need an Odyssey. Keep looking at the FS re-release, but few and far between and most have been grabbed by scalpers (same as the 2600FS). Can't remember, how does the Odyssey FS compare to the originals?
I can tell you the FS is great. I got a white one. The sliders are buttery smooth, it sounds amazing and looks great. Some have complained about the keybed but I think its light action is just fine for a 3-octave monosynth. It is bigger than you’d expect but that just adds to its charm.
It’s so clear the SH-5 was inspired by the Odyssey, the capabilities are so similar. I’d love to see a side by side comparison of the MS-5 to a Behringer Odyssey.
One of the articles I’ve very often read out of the Mark Vail book Vintage Synthesizers is the entry about the Prophet 5. In its text, it reads that the Prophet 5’s voice architecture more closely resembles that of the Odyssey than the Minimoog. The Odyssey-type features are the 4-stage envelopes, the oscillator sync function, the pulse width control and the dedicated LFO. I quickly noticed how those features were all added to the architecture of the Voyager when Dr. Robert Moog put it on the market in 2003. In the summer of 2000, I tried purchasing 2 vintage ARP synthesizers off of eBay, an Odyssey Mk II and an Axxe Mk II. The difference between a regular odyssey Mk II and this one is that this one had been retrofit with the PPC pads. If that how did the synthesizer I had laid claim to, I probably would still own it today. Today I have the Korg duplicate which has the benefit of not having that protruding key bed.
As an FYI the PPCs on the MKII probably weren’t retrofit. There’s lots of crossover between the revisions, and some MKIIs had the ‘new’ PPC installed on the existing body. And yes, the Pro5 has all the stuff the mini was lacking - and the voyager added!
That crossover Mk II would’ve been the most desirable model to have, especially if it was one of those that contained the contraband Moog filter duplicate. In any event, thank you for responding as always, Starsky.
Looking forward to listening to this as a Podcast later, great sounding classics and I'm defo curious about the comparison (I have the Cat and Grandmother but still). Sort of assuming Moog didn't send you a free Muse. How lame is that? You're the dude! EDIT: Behringer CAT, that is
love the vid cheers! on another notes im curious how do you feel the similarity holds up with the Vintage arp with the Korg ? does it have the same power / brutalness ? cheers
Sometime ago i tried a few classic mono synths to fit my home studio: Arp Odyssey Mk1 , Minimoog and Pro One. All of them were too harsh sounding, as they built to play along with guitars and druma on stages, hard to fit in the mix along with a vst or modern gear. The basic sound pallettes are quality but the price wasnt worth it, so i kept Pro One for some time when was making minimal wave experiments. Later got the Virus B and its like a most thought after amalgamation of all best features. But kind of miss the old analog look and feel of Apr Odyssey Mk1, beautiful design. Thanks fot videos
The Odyssey is a great synth. Great for music, but equally good for strange sounds like those in 70's scifi. Which apparently, they were used to create a lot of.
Cool video. Any chance you have some Muse content on the way? Am waiting to see how it stacks up to the Minimoog and, if you could find one on loan, the Memorymoog.
I recently got a minimoog reissue, it feels insanely good to play and use. i think thats the reason why you would keep it if you had to choose one, its just inspiring to play because of the overall experience. My Pro One would also be a contender for this pair, sounds big like the Moog but with more features.
I'm sure you've listened to demos of the Muse by now, but holy cow, that beast just sounds incredible. I've already added it the list of synths I dream about but will never be able to afford.
Hello Starsky. I'm curious as to how you've connected both synthesizers together. I own both synthesizers, "the Behringer versions" and I'm hoping to be able to do that.
My very first synth was a MicroMoog. I was a junior in High School and worked for months just to afford that. I wish I still had that beauty. Being the first to own a synth in my town, it was my ticket to play with several bands and get some side gigs. How times have changed.
Back in the day I'd instantly chosen the Mini, for fat leads and over the top basses - three oscillators plus a cable for feedback. In these days of virtual super saws, plus knowing many of the best basses are one oscillator only and not caring about leads: Odyssey. There, I've said my peace.
I recently got the ARP Odyssey FS .. reissue . AND the Model D is on the Way ! ... I have a Subsequent 25 and 2 M32s and a DFAM.... bit of a gang bang.
The Moog you just love the fat sound. It does what it does well. Leads and Bass. The Odyssey had better modulation options and a thinner but unique sound in of itself. The Odyssey suffered from design omissions such as a pitch wheel instead of bend knob lol. and a detent on the oscillators for a reasonable standard pitch. You had to tune it, but the Moog tended to drift out of tune for about a good half hour or so. So, you accepted the quirks and loved them anyway.
yeah, but not independently and only 2 octaves at a time. Sometimes you just can't play the line you need at the pitch you want without retuning. The Moog also has an extra 1/2 octave on the keyboard.
@@StarskyCarr I was mainly responding to the thing about going from lead to bass with ease.... but there are some cool performance tricks that you can do with that switch that would be more awkward with the knobs
If I had an original MiniMoog i'd point and laugh at all the poors. Which is me right now, with no original MiniMoog. So, if it was today, I would be an Odyssey owner, and I would love it like it was my child. Great Vid Starsky, you always make what ever you're fiddling with look fantastic.
You could always sell your soul to Beezlebehringer. I did! Only way I could afford a 2600. Great synth that one, 3 strong oscillators and semi modular for only ~350$. But now I see Uli in my dreams... I haven't slept in so long.... *Jumps suddenly* What was that noise!?
some other things in favor of the odyssey... for me the sliders are much more playable than knobs. While the mini has a much nicer mod wheel, each slider is like its own mod wheel on the oddy. I'm constantly tweaking the lfo speed, filter cutoff, envelopes, and mod levels while i'm playing. i never really do that on synths with knobs. also you can visualize your patch much more easily on a synth with sliders. Also, i love that there are multiple ways to modulate each oscillators pitch independently on the oddy. it's much more of a "modular" experience. The switches are really genius in this respect. instant re-routings. Also, in the s&h mixer, you can mix in signals from both oscillators as well as the noise source, so you can come up with patterns that sound like sequences when the 2 oscillators interact. I like making patches with osc one in lfo mode, interacting with osc 2 in the s&h mixer as well as the main lfo to create interesting patterns. also the oddysey can be duophonic and has the famous trick with duophonic ring mod and even though you don't have octave control for the individual oscillators, you have the octave range switch which gets you from lead to bass even quicker than the mini and it's very playable as well. its fun to switch it mid-performance. The oddy does have a reputation for being harsh but it can also sound very sweet.... mild ring modulation can create a beautiful watery sound. For me, though, i think of the oddysey as a wonderful playground for experimental sounds. its easy to get weird very quickly. and its great for percussion sounds. I have played the mini and its a wonderful synth, but because of its ubiquity, most monos copy it in some way so its capabilities exist in a lot of other synths, while the oddy is, for me, a one of a kind experience... more akin to a Music Easel than the Moog....in that its extremely flexible with creative limitations and a workflow made for curious minds.
"... you can visualize your patch much more easily on a synth with sliders." Exactly why I always loved my ARP Axxe. However, after 25 years or so you find out that sliders get really nasty and they're a pain to clean or replace. Rotary pots are a lot easier to maintain in the long run.
there's also a trick using the inverse saw I was trying to remember while demoing - someones put it in the comments. It uses all 3 VCOs to get 'perfect' PWM
The first time I saw and played any synthesizer was a white ARP Odyssey as a little kid in the mid 70’s and while I really liked the sound shaping ability of it I didn’t like how it was monophonic. I had a Lowery organ back then and I really couldn’t understand why the ARP was monophonic and the Lowery was full polyphonic. So I wasn’t impressed. 🤷♂️ lol what did I know at 7.
External input on the original Model D ... Yes there was an attenuator for it just like on the reissue. Extra big point for the Odyssey, and the big selling point for it back in the day: DUOPHONIC. That was a pretty huge new thing when it came out, and why a lot of players got it. Extra point for the Model D: its A440 reference tone. Made it super simple to get the oscillators tuned (in theory, see below). I do own an original Model D but never had an Odyssey. I do, however, have two ARP Axxes and the biggest plus for ARP at least on the AXXE is that it freaking stayed in tune for years! The Model D? Ugh. It was SO bad at staying in tune, I never really used it much. There are mods to fix that but I haven't found anyone to do them close to me and shipping that heavy thing is $$
Ah thanks... I just couldn't remember off the top of my head, thansk. And definitely... 2 points I recorded but never made the cut (they were out of focus!!) and I forgot to add the re-recorded versions in the edit... duh!! sometimes your brain tells you you've done something, because you did it but removed it!
ARPs always sounded tinny next to a Minimoog. I loved my Minimoogs too... when they were $1500. Now that they're 5 grand or so, I love my Behringer Model D's... both of them.
Funny thing is, I rarely found a way to use my Model D in a mix without dropping it down to one or two oscillators because it just ate up the whole audio frequency spectrum. Big and fat, yes. But too bloody big and fat a lot of time. The Odyssey, I think, is easier to fit into a mix. When I think of Model D's in actual songs, they're usually limited to big boomy bass sounds, or fairly simple lead sounds, which are augmented by FX and a talented player who can work the mod wheels with great skill (in other words ... not me!)
I’m incredibly fortunate to own both (vintage keys keep me poor) and while I got into analog synths due to the Minimoog (thanks to Wakeman), I turn to my ARP Odyssey 98% of the time! It’s bite and snarl is just killer and I love ‘seeing’ the patch via the sliders.
The purists will hate me, but I have the Behringer knock off of both these amazing synths. Criticize me all you want, but there is no way I can afford the originals, and this way I can at least get the feel of what it's like to work with these designs, instead of looking at two bare shelves.
In 1979 I sold my motorcycle and got a Minimoog Model D. My neighbor had an Arp Odyssey. His Odyssey had a pitch knob above the lowest note on the keyboard. We had so much fun playing them together. I still have my Minimoog. This video brought back some great memories.

George Duke loved both and was a master in using each one's sonic character, especially in wonderful lead sounds for soloing...
Yeah you can see them sitting next to each other in his live performances. He’s the reason I almost didn’t talk about the musicians rivalry!
@@defrigge I saw him perform in the 70s with both on top of his Rhodes; so good.

The synth sound in your video is being made by what synth? Is that sound stacked?
Nevermind I see lol
some other things in favor of the odyssey...
for me the sliders are much more playable than knobs.
I like making patches with osc one in lfo mode, interacting with osc 2 in the s&h mixer as well as the main lfo to create interesting patterns.
also the oddysey can be duophonic and has the famous trick with duophonic ring mod
and even though you don't have octave control for the individual oscillators, you have the octave range switch which gets you from lead to bass even quicker than the mini and it's very playable as well. its fun to switch it mid-performance.
Binaural play is a beaut. Dirty:Dirty! ❤
Moog doesn’t have PWM but if you detune* two square waves, is that not equivalent to PWM? As I write this you show it in the video lol
there's also a trick using the inverse saw I was trying to remember while demoing - someones put it in the comments. It uses all 3 VCOs to get 'perfect' PWM
According to Peter Forrest, Carlos Santana (!) is quoted as saying the Odyssey is the female and the MiniMoog the male.
Is the MS-20 the enby with tats?
That would make the 2600 Dog!
Er, duophony on the Oddy...?
Yea read the description… I forgot to add it in the edit 🤦♂️
The first time I saw and played any synthesizer was a white ARP Odyssey as a little kid in the mid 70’s and while I really liked the sound shaping ability of it I didn’t like how it was monophonic. I had a Lowery organ back then and I really couldn’t understand why the ARP was monophonic and the Lowery was full polyphonic. So I wasn’t impressed. 🤷♂️ lol what did I know at 7.
The Arp is duophonic.
@@godot5082 yes I realize that but my point is it can’t do chords.
I'm the 202🎼!
Of course the Minimoog has a ring mod…if you got the Mini without picking up a Moogerfooger ring mod pedal as well, what the heck were ya thinking?
"I'm out of money". But that might just be me.
you don't have to buy a minimoog to produce noises like you do, starsky, all you need is a grinder and a drill.
Why thank you… 🙏 🤩 I can think of no higher compliment 😂
ARPs always sounded tinny next to a Minimoog. I loved my Minimoogs too... when they were $1500. Now that they're 5 grand or so, I love my Behringer Model D's... both of them.
Funny thing is, I rarely found a way to use my Model D in a mix without dropping it down to one or two oscillators because it just ate up the whole audio frequency spectrum. Big and fat, yes. But too bloody big and fat a lot of time. The Odyssey, I think, is easier to fit into a mix. When I think of Model D's in actual songs, they're usually limited to big boomy bass sounds, or fairly simple lead sounds, which are augmented by FX and a talented player who can work the mod wheels with great skill (in other words ... not me!)
OK but i have à korg 770 it,not bad and original and mort Coldplay sound
I think the ARP 2600 is more iconic than the Odyssey, but that's just me.
Add one point to the Odyssey for price/value, IMHO.
good point.
Poor Starsky cant do a Muse video until Behringer rips it off
Or .. more realistically.. has taken his kids on holiday!
The purists will hate me, but I have the Behringer knock off of both these amazing synths. Criticize me all you want, but there is no way I can afford the originals, and this way I can at least get the feel of what it's like to work with these designs, instead of looking at two bare shelves.
