Reading The Sun And The Star Reviews From Homophobic Parents And Losing My Sanity

- Hello, and welcome to another video! I hope you enjoy watching me go on rant spirals cause this is what that is. People suck. I've always known that. But apparently I need a reminder from time to time. Amazon is probably the worst place for reviews, because at least the ones on goodreads are funny :P
I hope you enjoy!

My Nana literally didn't care that it was gay, she just really enjoyed the fact that I was wanting to read a book, lol
Omg my parents didn't care either although now I have an obsession
@@Daughter_of_HadeMy Nana has written books WITH Gay characters in them 😭
@@FNaFArt_Noah oh she's an author that's cool I'd like to be an author also I have an unhealthy obsession with percy jackson
My Gran loves the gay acceptance and I read it more than three times (I love reading) and even read some of the fluff to her❤❤❤
My mom had/has no clue that The sun and the star is gay and I am thankful for that bc she not the most supportive of lgbtia+ but ovall it’s a good book
The whole reason Rick wrote the book with Mark is because Rick doesn’t specialize in emotional scenes (not saying he can’t write them). So Rick focused on the humor and the writings of the characters and Mark did more of the emotional stuff.
I mean, he CAN write emotional stuff, but it usually includes killings someone :v
Thank you, Mark, for making this book my favorite
"if i wanted to read a boys love book , i wouldve bought one" what. bro thats what you did buy?? the litteraly title of the book is basicaly saying , WIll solace and Nico Di angelo. And ya know they are gay foreachtoehr , so if the title litterally has to do with them , thne im pretty sure the hwole book is practically gonna be about THEM. aka TWO BOYS IN LOVE
As a BiSexual Percy Jackson fan I will say it is a weird jump from the main series to the spin offs being more LGBTQ represented. I was like wait what Nico is GAY?! As it came out of nowhere and felt weird. Used to it now but felt forced at the moment.
Yeah I mean all they had to do was look at the cover and read the blurb on the back!
@@lucasromerova6150I think Rick knew that he was gay around the first series, it's just the fact that it was written in 2005+. While the House of Hades was written around the time Gay marriage was legalized in the US.
@@FNaFArt_Noah Rick has indeed confirmed that he knew what Nico's sexuality was in the last couple of books in PJO.
FELLOW JD FAN SPOTTED??
they dont read the resume before buying a book ??😭
"its not appropriate for kids" kids dies and see horrible stuffs every book but its ok👍
They should read the sample before buying the book
the thing that confuses me is that there are so many hetero couples in the first few series (percy and annabeth, jason and piper, frank and hazel, silena and beckendorf, leo and calypso, the list goes on and on) and they have absolutely zero problem with it, yet as soon as ONE gay couple gets a book, it's too inappropriate and forcing an agenda. Two boys kissing is apparently the most disgusting thing in the world to some people and that's just sad.
Yeah... I'm mean, you don't like it you can pass, but I'm tired of "agenda". That not because an author want to put other couples than hetero that mean it's for agenda or anything. More, author have nobody that force them to write.
"also I am very impressed that a 9 year-old will be reading this book bc it's like 400 pages long"
my past 9 year-old self DEVOURING ~600-700 Harry Potter books in the span of maximum 4 days: "What, like it's hard?"
Edit:
Comment: "y'all hate this book because it's too gay and I hate this book because it's poorly written and also homophobic"
Me reading that comment: "My math is not math-ing..."
Also great video! I appreciate the suffering you put yourself through for our entertainment ( :
Sameee I started reading Harry Potter in first grade and everyone thought I was crazy lol
Same I read sorcerers stone in kindergarten, then gave up, then finished it in 4th grade.
Same
I'm right it's not that hard to read the HP series in 3 to 4 days! I did it myself too
yeah exactly! I did read full Harry Potter,KOTLC up to flashback and The Inheritance cycle (which the main series is only 4 books but who cares lol)
Even if they missed Trials of Apollo (didn’t know it existed) I don’t see how they could have missed Nico and Will in Heroes of Olympus. It’s obvious even then they’ll end up together.
When HoO was still coming out, I used to preorder the books, read them in a day, and give the copy to my best friend for him and his brother to read. When he finished BoO, I was like “and Nico moving on with will was really satisfying for his character arc” and he was like wait nico and will were into each other? So it is possible for someone to just completely miss it lmao
I was giggling when I read the last Nico chapter of BoO, Solangelo was sooooo obvious to me, I read the chapter to everyone one of my family and friends (including Gran, cousin, multiple friends), everyone saw the Solangelo immediately ❤😊
6:56- One of the themes for the very book you're reviewing is about letting yourself grow and change as a person, so of course Nico is going to change as a character.
I thought this book was actually really good. Like, what did people think was going to happen? They are literally in TARTARUS! Ofc the characters aren’t going to act how they normally would. I thought the pet names were cute 😭
Author: this is a gay book
Reviewers: excuse me it has gay in it, i wasnt expecting that cause i didnt read the description before i bought it
Author: this is about two boys who are dating and go into a pit of hell
Reviewers: theres too much romance and helpful insights about life, its not what i paid for
Like these people are ridiculous 🙄
sad but true
"This is as bad as the musical Hadestown" an award winning musical that is fantastic. Instantly told me that this reviewer and I have completely different ideas of bad
I personally think that getting specifically a queer coauthor for this book, because it touches on a lot more unique queer experiences that a straight man like Rick might not necessarily be the most qualified to comment on, like coming out and gay awakenings, and it has a lot more specific labels than most other books in that universe. Only really the second two Magnus Chase books and Tower of Nero have any specific labels at all.
I explained the entire plot to my mum and dad before borrowing it from my public library and they were like, “okay that’s cool.” I think they know I’m homo 😂 but the point is they didn’t care
The sun and star is a good book if you don't want a book like that then why did you buy it? If you read the back you would not have bought it and complain
Their kids wanted them to read LGBT stuff
These are the best videos 🏳️🌈
Edit: I’m half way through 9:57 and I can’t with these Amazon reviews anymore 💀
Edit: 14:32 Percy had this guy named Jason, he didn’t look too straight
Percy didn't look too straight around Luke either.
@@cayladettra7218 HA
don’t mind me I’m just dying laughing 🤣
9:02 The whole book is about change so of course Nico as a character is going to change, of course the Solangelo relationship is going to change and it's not even true that the we don't see struggles with Annabeth and Percy. In their pov's in Mark of Athena they both feel slightly off in there relationship, especially Percy. He feels like he's being useless to Annabeth and her quest but never says anything.
I’m a ten year old and bought this book for my self right after reading the trials of Apollo and read it in two days. I cried on chapter eight and kept crying throughout. Ioved it so much
Great but just a little tip. Please do not say your age online especially if you aren’t old enough to be on this app. I know it sucks but you probably shouldn’t have unfiltered access to the internet until at least 13 when you are actually allowed. and exposing your age can be dangerous because there are disgusting people on the internet.
That is the most chaotic title ever
Not the reviewssss I cantttt I read most of these already….. 💀
I'm 12 and when I read the book it was completely fine not inappropriate, I loved it. And I hate how people (my friends parents) don't approve of LGBTQ+, THEY ARE STILL PEOPLE. over all I loved the sun and the star book and a recamned it to everone.
you are more competent at 12 than most adults
pls don’t expose your age in the internet if you are a minor tho. i am older than you and still wouldn’t say my age. tho i do think that this page is less dangerous than others i would still be careful
Same 😭😭
I enjoy each new Greek book, but I do agree that the Kanes and Magnus should have gotten more than just a trilogy and a couple companion books each.
one time i was in a bookstore and i saw that the sun and the star was wrapped in plastic with a warning that said ‘unsuitable for children’….next to some of the dirtiest booktok ass smut i’ve ever seen in my life
10:52 : "I am very impressed with the fact that a 9 year old will be reading this book cause it's like 400 pages long"
Meanwhile, 9 year old me reading the entirety of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 1 day. Don't underestimate kids.
I’ve been a kid! And I wasn’t reading 400 page books at 9 years old I was barely reading Geronimo Stilton 😂
TSATS wasn't my favorite book but I still appreciate it and if someone doesn't like it just because gasp there are gay characters they are being ridiculous😂
10:21 RELATABLE THO-😭😭😭
I hate it when people say books “are for babies” when there’s an arbitrary age cut-off.
like- adults and older teens can enjoy children’s and YA fiction too.😭
AGREED
It’s my second favorite book in the whole world and I was super excited about it, I screamed, laughed , almost cried and just absolutely adored it. I do understand that it can feel a little too forced with the explicit queerness for example the chat between Piper and Nico, but I really really loved it and in my opinion is almost perfect
I love these pjo vids keep it up!
The only part of the book that made me uncomfortable was when Nyx tried to baby trap a 15 year old. Kinda suprised how few of the reviews mention that 😒
I'm so immature but the 420 likes on the video when I clicked it made me laugh
the second funniest number
My only problem with TSATS is that Rick and Mark made my mom the Villian.☹️
My only problem with this book was that I thought the moments of Riordan's traditional zany humour didn't jive well with the mostly super dark and serious story they wanted to tell.
in the titans curse he is a ball of happiness
10:45 YOU ARE SPEAKING FACTS!!
Yeah!
I went into this book expecting a classic Rick Riordan book starring my favourite characters nick and will, who I was rooting for with all my heart but I just thought it was written with the fact that the characters are gay in mind…the amount of times the word boyfriend is used is way too much like for example if it was Percy and annabeth they wouldnt use it so often? I felt that. Rick riordan was trying to normalize being part of the lgbtq+ community that it inadvertently made it seem different than a straight relationship. As a result of this I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I was hoping to because I was waiting for a solangelo book for a long time and it felt disappointing to me at least
Hey Unclaimed, you should try out Elise Kova's air awakens universe I think that you will enjoy it as it is also a massive connected universe spanning several book series and although it has elements of romance it is also mainly fantasy series and has some LGBT representation
It feels like a lot of these people just don't know how gay the original greek myths these stories riff off already were.
"In a world where a couple is a couple why do you have to make such a big deal about this couple being a couple" - for precisely the reason that so many of these reviews see any gay couple existing in literature as "political" in this world we are still at the point where making stories about a gay couple is unusual and still needs celebrating and making a point of. If (when) we get to a point where homophobia is a rare thing in the world then we can really say straight or gay makes no difference
YOU MEAN UNLUCKY ENOUGH TO NOT KNOW ANY JEGULUS
fr tho I know the ship is insane but I love them, and this review sent me
Yaaaay Friday post!! I find these so funny, like it is no mystery this is and LGBTQ+ book, if you don’t feel “comfortable” why do you read it 😂 ( also I’m a huge wolfstar and jilly shipper too :D)
14:18 Well I remember Nico saying “And having a crush on a straight boy embarrassing” something like that when he was talking about him liking Percy I think
I’m sry but wdym Hadestown the musical is bad…
Hadestown is amazing, a work of art
Prove. Me. Wrong.
I actually really liked this book! Nico and Will are so cute and it was just a nice read overall.
Thank you!
sure TSATS wasn’t as good as rick’s other novels but i didn’t even think it was that bad? 😭
Inappropriate im 11 and ive read preety much every percy jackson book and i personally loved the sun and the star
I'm 11 as well and The Sun And The Star is one of my top 3 favorite books in the riordanverse.
@@The_cool_book_nerd agreed
Honestly I kinda agree with some of the reviews. It DID kinda feel like a fanfic. It was way too lovey for me. The plot was almost a background thing.
Then again that’s just my opinion as someone who looks at published books for plot and fanfics for romance.
To me I felt overwhelmed and the romance didn’t feel special anymore cuz there was too much of it.
Definitely wasn’t pushing a gay agenda tho, what 😂
Edit: I also did notice the co writing. I read the description and it wasn’t what I was expecting even then.
This all being said, I’m also autistic and really don’t like change, so the fact that it changed from what I was expecting could have tilted my view.
I didn't like the Sun and the Star, personally. It's way too much a different thing from the whole CHB and spinoff books, with too much deep thoughts and really sappy scenes. The whole vibe is just the opposite of everything else, and I don't like it.
But this is absolutely not because of the LGBT part. I love relationships like Piper and Shel or Sundew and Willow, I just don't like the Solangelo dynamic in this book.
Love the video
thanks!
WOOH POSTING FRIDAY
Uhhhh people are so annoying the sun and the star was a good book it had its pro and cons but still enjoyable. I disagree with those one star reviews. But u know what I realized my first video I had ever watched from u was a couple years ago when u released the reading homophobic reviews of TTOA series lol.
I JS BOUGHT THIS BOOK TODAY I NEED TO FINISH TOA BUT IM ALMOST DONE W BOOK 2!!
CARRY ON IN THE BACKGROUND
I didn't even read the books I just somehow got sucked into the persassy edits but once I discovered that Nico and Will are gay for eachother I looked up some fanart and they actually looked so wholesome together idk how could someone hate them
Have you ever read this book called 5 feet apart
It's kind of wild to me how having a lot of queer rep in a book is seen as 'pushing' representation, but as far as I can tell, unless explicitly stated otherwise, most people assume that every character in every book is cis/hetero 😅
I just hated the fact that it was co-written
same
in TSATS it says "what was one straight boy when you spent your whole life longing for the impossible?" in nicos pov٫ and he was referring to percy. i think percy is definitely bi but if its in the book its probably canon😔
I mean, that could just be what Nico thinks
Ngl why hate on the book for having representation when it’s very much in the title. Have they read trials of Apollo or even heroes of Olympus💀
14:19 uncle Rick never said water boy was straight, but on twitter he said that Percy was pan
I've seen a GoodReads response from him in which he says that he doesn't see Percy as queer in any shape or form, but fans are welcome to headcannon him as such if they think it makes sense.
❤
The fact that im 5 minutes into this, and a 12 year old felt uncomfortable with literaly makes me wanna die. Im literaly 12 and this book helped me come out as lesbian. HOW ARE YOU SO IMMATURE TO NOT EVEN FEEL COMFORTABLE OR RESPECT IT, LIKE HAVE SOME BASIC HUMAN DECENCY!(Sorry for kinda lashing out)
listen, I don't like TSaTS, but honestly some of these comments were ridiculous. though I will not deny that I agree with some of them.
SPOILERS
I think my main problem with the entire book was how Nico did not feel like Nico, and how Will (I apologize to all the Will Solace stans out there) felt like a jerk. I know that Nico is in a relationship, he's learning and changing, but I can't really see how he would go from grumpy, snappy, defensive and with a touch aversion to sappy, 'my boyfriend is the sun and he is awesome and beautiful and-' in from what I recall, a year or less. and Will? don't even get me started on Will. I really liked his character in ToA. he was interesting, loved his dynamic with Nico, and generally a great character. What this book gave me was a guy who kept complaining about the Underworld his entire trip, told his boyfriend Persephone (his stepmother!) was beautiful in front of his face then promptly asked said stepmother how you love someone from the underworld, was sickly throughout the entire trip until he worked together with Nico at the very end to defeat a primordial that even Zeus fears with the power of friendship and love.
then there was me thinking: alright, so what happened to Jason? What happened to the 'where's Jason's soul' problem? how is the entire camp empty other than our main characters and activities director? so campers can just leave anytime they want to now? why would hades send his son to Tartarus, he loves his son, why send him on a trauma trip to 'the place where even gods don't venture'? Tartarus feels completely watered down, why? how did Percy and annabeth just... forget, about bob??? nico just thinks of Percy and annabeth as 'percabeth' now, I guess....? and how the absolute frick does nico get to see Bianca and Maria's ghosts when one of them is unreachable and the other reincarnated?
then the ultimate thing that pushed me over the edge: you know how disturbing it is for a millennia lady says to a fourteen year old, "these are our children." and the child just going, alright, I hate you, I'm killing you (what a divorce!), and I'm taking the kids then promptly naming them the Cocoa Puffs... hey, that sounds like a band name?" it was just plain weird, and honestly, I can get some parent for thinking this part wasn't suitable to children. nyx felt like a stalker and a creep throughout the whole book really, zeus level. and rick didn't even go that far in writing zeus the way nyx was written.
basically, this book had me jumping ship to Jasico and binging an entire 800K fanfic over the span of three days about that very ship on ao3.
right, now that I got my rant out of the way (SORRY ABOUT THAT I REALLY AM TO TSATS LOVERS), I will admit there are some good parts of the book, but honestly a lot that made me question my knowledge of Nico's character and whether or not I actually understood or remembered anything from the books I read about phycology and whether or not relationships are toxic. if you liked this book, I'm happy for you, but I hope some of you can understand that there are people who found this book uncharacteristic and similar to some alright-fanfictions. we don't want to be haters, and we aren't trying to be haters. we just want to point out what this book could've improved, and expressed some thought that we hope rick would find helpful. fan feedback for the book released specifically for Solangelo fans, after all.
I love The Sun and the Star
Please read reviews for Song of Achilles!!!
3:13 Fun Fact; the Magnus Chase series introduced me to the concept of people being genderfluid.
Same
me too
I have it signed
"My boyfriend" was said to many times, though.
I have half a mind to read it again and count
No way its been 2 yrs
I liked the book. But, the nonlinear timeline mixed with the dream parts was very confusing. I couldn’t tell you what happened or was a dream. I would say 3 stars.
Also, Rick seems to be losing the art of subtlety. It has been an issue since Heroes of Olympus and is just getting worse. Mainly this issue was with Piper and left her character inverted within the fandom. It feels like Rick doesn’t trust his fandom to figure things out. If all a character thinks about is that they don’t think of something, then it’s all they think about. If the trend continues, we are going to have another DC Icons on our hands and nobody needs more DC Icons
this vid came out 1 hour after i finished it
I think the people in the reviews compared it to jegulus bc they're generally also using a lot of light/dark opposites attract tropes/themes in those fics. In that case Nico would be Regulus and James would be Will.
fair, but still a bit of a reach I think
@@Unclaimeddemigod also I forgot to mention ppl often compare James to the sun bc he has an extroverted sunny personality and Regulus is named after a star so we often see fanart or fics with them literally being the sun and the star. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Solangelo and Jegulus are the same but they’d appeal to the same audience
my daughter read all of the books by rick Riordan at the age of six she is obsessed
impressive
Impressive indeed
I'm a 13 year old bi boy in the closet, planning to read this book soon, ill fill yall in on whether it is convincing me to stay in the closet in a month or so
love this little experiment for us
@@Unclaimeddemigod I have heaps of books in my tbr you this might take a while to get to lol bear with me
We do want more of Egypt and Asgard.
Yeah Kane Chronicles is underrated but the thing that is even more underrated is Daughter of the Deep. All I need is just confirmation that Ana and Gemini are a couple 😭
15:23 They may be Jegulus fan fiction but the book was good
I can see why some people might not like this book, in the sense that it's not what they read Percy Jackson for, but I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, maybe in part because I like emotional stories. It also got me invested in Nico and Will's relationship in a way that their appearances in Trials of Apollo didn't. I felt like Trials of Apollo showed them bickering more than it showed them actually being a loving couple, and it didn't really feel like they were in love, so I liked that this book added some depth to their relationship and actually showed them being a loving couple.
i was mad when the person said “if rick can’t write a book on his own, he shouldn’t write it” because i think it would have been worse if he wrote it on his own. Mark Oshiro is a queer author of color that uses they/them(?) pronouns, and i kinda thought that rick didn’t think it would be right for him to write a queer romance when he’s a straight white man. also not the jegulus fan fiction lmao. babes it’s 2024 why are we still homophobic?
If you like Percy Jackson you should check out Lockwood and Co by Jonathan Stroud. It even got turned into a tv show. It's about these kids who fight ghost in London.
I have seen it around before and it does look interesting
@Unclaimeddemigod I highly recommend it! It's got Percy Jackson's vibes, and Rick Riordan himself has left a review and love it! You should totally check it out.
I think I was expecting a lot more action etc bc it was in Tartarus and it felt too easy. Especially compared to everything Percabeth went through in House of Hades. I know Nico would be more familiar with the Underworld etc etc but come on ! Don't get me wrong I had a good time reading this book and I love Nico and Will so so much but it just felt so low stakes for a book where they literally go through hell. Also side note, because of the foreword I expected Piper to be a main character and was incredibly disappointed when she wasn't. I don't get why she was in the foreword if she was only going to make a small appearance at the end. It was very misleading.
Okay I've never read anything in the Percy Jackson universe but like, surely you're not just buying the book without reading the summary right? I'd have to imagine the summary says that they're in a relationship if it's a main part of the story
people just love to complain
Heartstopper!!!!!
Second 😊
I LOVED that book so much and my friend has read it 17 times. These reviews are making me angry. Homophobic people don't get it. Also this book was so great so I don't get the "Its so poorly written" like what?
