The whole reason Rick wrote the book with Mark is because Rick doesn’t specialize in emotional scenes (not saying he can’t write them). So Rick focused on the humor and the writings of the characters and Mark did more of the emotional stuff.

Mark came to discuss this book with my schools book club and he told us it’s also partially because Rick (an “old straight white man”) didn’t completely feel like it was his place writing a book about two gay teens. On a side note Mark is a really great guy and he told us a lot of interesting stuff about Rick and his writing process.

the thing that confuses me is that there are so many hetero couples in the first few series (percy and annabeth, jason and piper, frank and hazel, silena and beckendorf, leo and calypso, the list goes on and on) and they have absolutely zero problem with it, yet as soon as ONE gay couple gets a book, it's too inappropriate and forcing an agenda. Two boys kissing is apparently the most disgusting thing in the world to some people and that's just sad.

I would say it is more of the fact that u are writing a book abt something that is not natural. Just cuz someone has an urge to do something doesn't mean they should do like people that having a gay relationship is ok. Cuz it's not. It's a sinful desire and is in the same category of lust

No, I don’t believe there is a God, but I respect people who do. However, let me tell you something. If you’re trying to convince a comment section full of gays that they’re sinners, it won’t work, because they’ve heard this exact thing a billion times. What do you think this videos about? I personally think that getting specifically a queer coauthor for this book was a right move, because it touches on a lot more unique queer experiences that a straight man like Rick might not necessarily be the most qualified to comment on, like coming out and gay awakenings, and it has a lot more specific labels than most other books in that universe. Only really the second two Magnus Chase books and Tower of Nero have any specific labels at all.

"In a world where a couple is a couple why do you have to make such a big deal about this couple being a couple" - for precisely the reason that so many of these reviews see any gay couple existing in literature as "political" in this world we are still at the point where making stories about a gay couple is unusual and still needs celebrating and making a point of. Honestly I kinda agree with some of the reviews. It DID kinda feel like a fanfic. It was way too lovey for me. The plot was almost a background thing.
Then again that’s just my opinion as someone who looks at published books for plot and fanfics for romance.
To me I felt overwhelmed and the romance didn’t feel special anymore cuz there was too much of it.
Definitely wasn’t pushing a gay agenda tho, what 😂
Edit: I also did notice the co writing. I read the description and it wasn’t what I was expecting even then.
This all being said, I’m also autistic and really don’t like change, so the fact that it changed from what I was expecting could have tilted my view.

I can see why some people might not like this book, in the sense that it's not what they read Percy Jackson for, but I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, maybe in part because I like emotional stories. It also got me invested in Nico and Will's relationship in a way that their appearances in Trials of Apollo didn't. I felt like Trials of Apollo showed them bickering more than it showed them actually being a loving couple, and it didn't really feel like they were in love, so I liked that this book added some depth to their relationship and actually showed them being a loving couple.

    @katiekuo2010 4 місяці тому +1

listen, I don't like TSaTS, but honestly some of these comments were ridiculous. though I will not deny that I agree with some of them.
    SPOILERS
I think my main problem with the entire book was how Nico did not feel like Nico, and how Will (I apologize to all the Will Solace stans out there) felt like a jerk. I know that Nico is in a relationship, he's learning and changing, but I can't really see how he would go from grumpy, snappy, defensive and with a touch aversion to sappy, 'my boyfriend is the sun and he is awesome and beautiful and-' in from what I recall, a year or less. and Will? don't even get me started on Will. I really liked his character in ToA. he was interesting, loved his dynamic with Nico, and generally a great character. What this book gave me was a guy who kept complaining about the Underworld his entire trip, told his boyfriend Persephone (his stepmother!) was beautiful in front of his face then promptly asked said stepmother how you love someone from the underworld, was sickly throughout the entire trip until he worked together with Nico at the very end to defeat a primordial that even Zeus fears with the power of friendship and love.
then there was me thinking: alright, so what happened to Jason? What happened to the 'where's Jason's soul' problem? how is the entire camp empty other than our main characters and activities director? so campers can just leave anytime they want to now? why would hades send his son to Tartarus, he loves his son, why send him on a trauma trip to 'the place where even gods don't venture'? Tartarus feels completely watered down, why? how did Percy and annabeth just... forget, about bob??? nico just thinks of Percy and annabeth as 'percabeth' now, I guess....? and how the absolute frick does nico get to see Bianca and Maria's ghosts when one of them is unreachable and the other reincarnated?
then the ultimate thing that pushed me over the edge: you know how disturbing it is for a millennia lady says to a fourteen year old, "these are our children." and the child just going, alright, I hate you, I'm killing you (what a divorce!), and I'm taking the kids then promptly naming them the Cocoa Puffs... hey, that sounds like a band name?" it was just plain weird, and honestly, I can get some parent for thinking this part wasn't suitable to children. nyx felt like a stalker and a creep throughout the whole book really, zeus level. and rick didn't even go that far in writing zeus the way nyx was written.
basically, this book had me jumping ship to Jasico and binging an entire 800K fanfic over the span of three days about that very ship on ao3.
right, now that I got my rant out of the way (SORRY ABOUT THAT I REALLY AM TO TSATS LOVERS), I will admit there are some good parts of the book, but honestly a lot that made me question my knowledge of Nico's character and whether or not I actually understood or remembered anything from the books I read about phycology and whether or not relationships are toxic. if you liked this book, I'm happy for you, but I hope some of you can understand that there are people who found this book uncharacteristic and similar to some alright-fanfictions. we don't want to be haters, and we aren't trying to be haters. we just want to point out what this book could've improved, and expressed some thought that we hope rick would find helpful. fan feedback for the book released specifically for Solangelo fans, after all.

Because its mainly *because* of the represenation of these characters i'm even semi-able to write queer characters but i cant ever fully confirm because of where i live. Literally, the main mc of my book is kinda like nico, the person hes paired up with is similar to will, the other two main mcs are literally kinda like piper and shel, these damn books have influenced a lot of my story writing. Its even the fact will and nico are a thing that i ended making my ocs for my book who literally hace the same care and yes, those two are guys! 8:14 Imma trauma dump on a fanfic I found once. So, it was on Wattpad bc I didn’t feel like going on Ao3, and what I was looking for was js some random story, maybe not even pjo related, about the gods as mortals. I clicked one that looked decent and started reading it. The Olympians were made mortal teenagers and sent to Goode High school, where apparently every Demigod ever goes to school (Thalia, Nico, Annabeth, Percy, Travis, Katie were the ones there I think). Zeus tries to build this (fatherly) relationship with Thalia, and it fails MISERABLY, not to mention she’s a hunter of Artemis and is for some reason still in school? Also, Thalia has these romantic feelings for Nico. Huh?? Demeter and Hermes are out here desperately trying to keep Travis and Katie from dating. And…Nico…took Artemis….on a date…which was sabotaged…by Apollo and Aphrodite…like…what….And Artemis somehow ended up in this dumpster (thanks Apollo and Aphrodite?) and then she hated Nico, and then we find our Thalia is self harming and I’m JUST SO LOST and when I got to Thalia doing sh I just gave up because that author did Thalia dirty in that fic. Also did Nico and Artemis dirty, their characters did it deserve such treatment

Rick intentionally doesn't write in a timeline, his books pretty much are always set in the time he's writing them. Another obvious example is Chalice of the Gods, there's so much stuff in there that wouldn't have existed back in the timeline. As far as I remember, he wants to appeal to the current middle school generation more than to force an early 2000s and 2010s story. I just really can't remember which interview or video that was.

Also, Rick seems to be losing the art of subtlety. It has been an issue since Heroes of Olympus and is just getting worse. Mainly this issue was with Piper and left her character inverted within the fandom. It feels like Rick doesn’t trust his fandom to figure things out. If all a character thinks about is that they don’t think of something, then it’s all they think about. If the trend continues, we are going to have another DC Icons on our hands and nobody needs more DC Icons

did those people just compare rick's book to the fucking fanfics? i dont care what those are but are they in their right effing mind?
the reason rick chose mark to cowrote was because rick felt he couldn't justify the queer representation enough because he is not queer, hence deciding on mark as he is queer and a fantastic writer in his own way to establish more authenticity with the characters. I personally found it very endearing and responsible and respectful of him towards the characters.
They say they are solangelo fans but they can't respect the books more cause it has an additional author ...............than the fanfics? it's not the authors' problem if you're talking with your last two braincells and destroyed the rest while reading fanfics, like bro, PICK a struggle.
