Its a shame Mitsubishi. due to their financial woes have stopped developing the Pajero. The Pajero was once a class leading and (still is) a most capable 4WD. One of the first affordable "real" 4WD to go to a monocoque chassis, coil springs and fully independent suspension. Add to that its SuperSelect 4WD system, bullet proof reputation, excellent built quality and proven reliability, as well as a rich history and success in motorsport such as the Dakar Rally, makes it one outstanding 4WD package. The Pajero was killing it, so much so that Toyota developed the Prado to compete against it. I'm a big fan of the Pajero. I've owned two in the past, an NJ & NL. The latter I wish I never sold. Long live the Pajero.
Hammer Rocks this and the pajero sport Given the pajero sport hasnt been cancelled yet But it has in the states Mexico and other areas still get it I have the 2003, shits wild i think the new 2020 pajero sport would sell better then the current outlander (their both 3 rows) and its more off road worthy, its amazing ground clerance and shit
The Pajero will always be a true icon in my opinion. 12 time Dakar rally winner and proven mechanicals have all seemed to work well in its favour. “If it ain’t broke, why fix it” I’ve owned 2 Pajero’s and they are fantastic machines. People who know the real value will only understand this. It will be a shame to see a true legend become extinct.
There is a reason why Pajero doesn't house too much automation but rather rely on mechanical fancies. In one of the episode of adventures by BBC expedition team, they got flooded with water inside the Pajero and man, that vehicle kept going and finally crossed the river. The TV guy just said this "If there were too many electronic components inside then those would be affected by water and finally the car would have come stand still though it was a SUV" and that's the reason they chose Pajero - Take it anywhere you want.
Got a 2015 model. Not fancy by any means but can always be counted on. Some people value dependability over the latest tech. Only way i'm selling it will be to upgrade to the newer model.
I also got the same model. love its diesel sound. some say it is noisy compared to todays onroad suvs. but I love the "noise", it makes me feel I am driving a tough car
I remember back in 2009 seeing a brand new 2010 brown Pajero Exceed at a car dealership in Melbourne when my parents were picking up my mother's brand new Vitara. I fell in love with the Exceed the moment I saw it. Honestly was such a good looking SUV (and still is). I turned to my mum and asked her why she didn't buy the Pajero, to which she said the Vitara was cheaper, which it was.
Purchased a new Exceed model last month. Love it. Have been on a few long road trips over xmas. Super comfortable, fuel economy was better than I was expecting, great sound system, massive luggage space. Engine is powerful, plenty of low rev torque. I know how to drive properly so all the missing accident avoidance tech didn't bother me at all. Really like the understated look of it, I'm not into super flashy so it suits me. I wanted reliability and comfort, it ticks both boxes.
If you really need a good and practical 4x4, reliable, with good on road manners for family trips and enough grunt for off road challenges this is the one to go. If gadgetry, lazy proof sensors and big screens for the modern mall explorer is what you want look for any other suv on the market which is full of them.
Problem nowdays is people can't or don't drive ahead of themselves. So let's fill the car with more tech to distract them more. Trying to compensate for shit and dangerous drivers who should not have purchased a 4wd in the first place.
Remember the main reason car manufacturers started changing car bodies so frequently was just planned obsolescence, to make you want give up your cash for the next fashionable thing while changing little under the skin. I think it is respectful that Mitsubishi stuck with the Generation 4 for so long. The Gen 4 is a really well refined machine. Plus the parts interchangeability and availability is going to be great going forward.
Lets see how long the new JLR Defender lasts reliability wise, its a gadget ridden monster, lots to go wrong. Shogun is still fetching good money in UK.
I still drive a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero today and to my surprise it doesn't give any major trouble. 20 years and still going strong. Well, when I have enough money for a new one I'll still stick with Mitsubishi Pajero. God bless it's makers :)
I wish I could import one of these to the US right NOW!!! 2015-18. I currently have a 2003 Montero "US" spec model with just shy of 200k on the clock. I've had the vehicle for about 4 years and it has offered me so much fun off road and adventures. I LOVE how simple it is to operate and the gadgets I could care less about. The 2WD to 4WD options and low range is perfect and has taken me all over the place. I use mine with a roof top tent and I took out my 3rd row seats and use the place where they would go with storage for longer trips and essential amenities.
Your review was quite POOR, the majority of the time you criticised the car. No mention of tow capacity, approach angles, departure angles, etc......... all your focused on was gadgets, dont know how Mitsubishi let you review their vehicle.
It's unfortunately the current motoring journalists way. They buy nothing. Always have a very short term outlook on things. The real proof of these cars is if you do a comparative test between a Pajero, Prado, Discovery & Grand Cherokee in 10 years time. Get 4 similarly owned examples with 200 000km on the clock and full service history, then check for condition & total cost of ownership. The Pajero & Prado will be streets ahead and the Pajero might even edge it.
My father still have his 2nd gen Pajero for about 18 years with its no-longer-working mileage counter stuck at 496km. Its now being used by me to go to my university 5 times a week and hangout with friends sometimes
They continue selling well in Costa Rica, until 2018 they sold with the 4M40 2.8 turbo diesel engine, along with the 4M41 3.2 diesel common rail and 6G75 3.8 MIVEC petrol, being the most popular the 4M40. We agree that it's outdated in some new tech, but the lack of that fancy stuff makes it more reliable and cheaper to maintain. The Montero / Pajero / Shogun rocks
Such a simple car, reliable and who gives a shit about the ANCAP Back in the day we didn't have ABS or Lane Keep Assist then we actually used ourselves. Great car in my opinion and people shouldn't look over it. Get one before it disappears...

We bought the 2019 GLX with full leather recently, deciding to get one of these last of a era vehicles. It ticks all our boxes and we are very happy with it. We come from a family of small SUV and sedans so this is a tank for us. We sre in.good company as many of our friends are 4x4 owners and take their cars off road regularly.
Man if only mitsubishi incorporates the new tech in the montero/pajero sport in this old beast. Put the new engine and 8 speed transmission, this thing would kick arse
Got a 1987 2 door pajero with a 2.6 gas engine. Tired of head gasket issues, but other than that, it's incredible inside and out. Plan on doing a complete rock crawler overhaul on the thing. Had the car since 1997. Got Toyota straight axle and tcase, chevy 4.3 v6 and 700r4 trans and plan on a coil link suspension. Wish me luck!
I have a paj NW model, looks almost like the cabin in the video - I had the unpleasant experience of driving an outlander with all the crap in it. Honestly, I'd still get a paj because it did not have the safety stuff in it. So distracting and the adaptive cruise- it slows you down if someone pulls in front on the highway. I couldn't work out why the trip was going so long until I spotted the automatic drop in speed. Terrific off road!
My dad owns two Montero (pajero's alternative name) a 1991 2.5 turbo diesel and a 2.5 non turbo diesel, both in manual transmission, and guys, they are extremely reliable SUVs, I'm surprised on how minor the changes are in front of a 2020 pajero, other than the touchscreen display and a few more things on the inside and outside, I see just the same SUV, even under the hood it looks basically the same!! I love how it still keep the spirit of its ancestors, it might be one of the few vehicles that keeps its mechanical vibe. Even though I own a 2015 Mercedes Benz and a 2020 Kia sportage, I still love to drive those old school monteros, there's nothing like the feel of a vehicle with no electronical help
I still have 3rd gen DiD engine 2004 super exceed indonesian version, still comfort and durable. All electrically still works......No Rattling sound btw. Ooooh I still love my Pajero🤗.......and one more thing "The Real SUVs, show off their spare whell"😅.
Had NT diesel base model for 6years done several off road trips in Australia and has shown to be capable off-road aswell as a comfortable daily driver.I value reliability rather than the latest tech when I'm in remote areas.Regular servicing with quality products and a decent mechanic so far has resulted in no mechanical issues since ownership.
stobesy18 all good until someone comes over the crest of that hill on your side of the road for example. When there is no way to avoid a crash you would be wishing you had a vehicle with modern safety equipment.
@@gavinwolfe3238 easy you slow down if you can not see infront of you it's not hard to drive and at night time you can see there lights coming so just use your brain and your all good 👍
Or when the car coming the other way suddenly has a mechanical failure and swerves into you for example. Lots of situations where you just won’t have time to react.
Even before, this is my dream car. Even they already stop it's production, I will still consider buying a used one now that I can afford to have it. Legend will always be a legend.
I miss pajero so much He is my uncle to me When the times me, Pajero sport, Everest and him hunt down those Druids/ Zealots performing satanic sacrifice in Irelands He taught us how to knock them out with diesel fumes. The Village thanked us for saving them from satanic panic. I will miss him.
At 1:03 you are saying about centre diff lock and showing rear diff lock switch. I am not sure about you are aware or not about centre diff lock and rear diff lock. The pajero in this review have do have a rear diff lock and centre diff lock. Super select 4*4 already includes centre differential open and lock options and rear diff lock is engaged by a switch showing R/D lock that rear differential lock - you are showing it at 1:03 . Now super select 4*4 is 2H - 2 wheel drive 4H - 4 wheel drive high ( centre diff open ) 4HLC - 4 wheel drive high with locked centre differential 4LLC - 4 wheel drive low with locked centre differential. My English is poor - apologies for any mistakes
My last two cars were new Pajero Exceeds. I loved these cars. I update my cars every 4 years, was going to buy my third but alas they are no longer available in Australia. Goodbye Mitsubishi. I have been forced to move onto other manufacturers.
Being an owner of two Shoguns, one after the other, I like to contribute my comments too. In two ownerships the Shogun has performed flawlessly except in one occasion. One Shogun developed a leak. It was caused by an alumimium washer used in conjunction with a steel bolt in the fuel tank drain plug. Technically dissimilar metals in contact with each other can develop a corrosion problem with one being a sacrificial annode to protect the other. In this case the Aluminium washer corroded and the fuel leaked out. When I asked for a replacement the part wasn't aluminium but the fabric type. So the factory must have used the wrong washer when it ran out. This is a fundamental bi-metallic problem taught in every university and to me a clear error in the assembly. Apart from the single flaw my two Shogun ownership, spanning about 8 years, was perfect and trouble-free in every way. The car has a slow top end and rather heavy. It is very well built, ages well and did not get me any corrosion issue because I had to park it ouside unprotected all the time. Its essential duty in my case was to travel from UK to the European Alps for skiing. This is a perfect vehicle on skiing resorts. I did carry a snow chain just in case but with a set of newish all-season tyres the Shogun, with its super-select 4-wheel drive system, proved to be a car to beat on snow. It is trult a reliable work horse and good value for money especially on its 4x4 ability. I would have more of it had Mitsubishi not stopped selling diesel cars in UK.
Very identical to my 2009 Pajero. No reason to spend 60k to buy a new one. There are many many used one over the years. There are problems of the vehicle. Carbon builds up to block the intake. I need to buy a steel plate to block Egr pipe. All wheel alignment bolts/nuts seized in my vehicle. I don’t want to spend one thousand dollars to cut the bolts and replacing. So my vehicle can’t do wheels alignment even after 2 inches lift. Very expensive parts from Mitsubishi dealers. Even a wheel lock nut they charge 7 or 8 dollars each. It needs 8 litres oil for service. Valves clearance need to adjust manually. From report there’s flaw of the timing chain guide.
Pajero is very reliable and good value too. I dont really need high tech SUV, I am more on easy use but safe and will not put you down on long distance driving. Ceiling height is good if you will load piano or musical organ. I got 2011 for myself and 2018 for my wife. Both bought brand new. I will keep both in my lifetime and for sure 20 years from now, it will become a legend SUV.
guys toyota is still making their landcruiser pickup that was introduced way back but their are still selling it as a 2020 model, but that old thing is still running strong
How can they stop making the pajero shogun, its far better than the offerings of other car companies, it will be a very sad day in history if this truly iconic world beating 4x4 ends production.
Real off readers do t care about creature comforts . I own a 2001 pajero it doesn't need any of the cristicms you gave it. It's unique, the super select is superb , and it's extremely reliable . I'd take this 4 times over a 4 runner . You see those everywhere. It's nice to be in something not seen every stoplight , but capable of completing every task I have ever thrown at it while dragging the family along. As long as mitsubishi and other vendors stocks much needed parts, I'll forever have it. The only real complaint I have is not making it with more power. Give us an pajero evolution turbokit and it's another winner for the books
I own a 2017 NX GLS that I bought new - Didn't realise at the time I would own what would be the swan song of this icon. I have had nothing but positive things to say, having taken it for long xcountry drives incl Sydney to Great Ocean Rd and back and having recently updated the tires to BFG TAs. Definitely won't be selling it as Im hoping it might become a collectible classic 🤞
the third row of seats in the pajero are just optional and also intended for children and you can either store it underneath the floor of the cargo area or completely remove them and store them in you house. and if you are taking about technology the people who are into cars say that technology has ruined their cars it is just meant for people who want durability. over it is a nice car and the people who drove it say that, so dont complain
I used pajero for 2 years, it was 3.5l version , extremely under powered body is heavy for the engine. I was surprised when my frnd pointed out engine mounted cooling fan, rpm takes ages to clim up. On highway at 120kmh it moves around with wind & if wimd speed is high car struggles to keep up with speed. Things i love : interior quality & design, reliability , visibility, low price i git it brand new here in saudi arab for just 20200usd. Cheap parts, good brakes, but after some time rear seats started shaking over rough roads, after selling it i dont miss it a bit 😂
Also drove it about 1500km From Namibia to South Africa and I have to say it was the most relaxing drive on that road that I have ever done. Was like driving a lazy boy.
He complaining about lacks of technology while my 2015 Toyota Avanza doen't have any electronic gadgets and technology, even the backup camera but still love that car for its pureness.
No old model no new model,50 years of Mitsubishi pajero production is coming to the 6/7 generation and still not defeated by any rivals as the king of SUV Guinness book of world records
Sad to see the Pajero going, it's a true 4x4 with part time 4wd, solid reliability and not cluttered with non essential junk. My MK2 is 29 years old and does a days work for still. |I was designed to get you from A to B and BACK, not as a fashion statement.
I sold my Pajero and bought the new Prado 150 4.0 petrol. Of course Toyota is much newer and much better, but sometimes I have a great nostalgia and warm memories about my good old friend Pajero. BTW, the same seat heating and mirror adjusting buttons are the visiting card of Mitsubishi for the last 25 years))
Reliable and dependable, no doubting that. Unfortunately Pajero has been behind the benchmark in so many areas that many people will drive it and feel its too noisy, too cramped and ride quality nowhere near where it should be. They tow well, go anywhere and are as reliable as you can get. Pity Mitsi didnt give the Pajero a revamp 9 or 10 years ago and address what l mentioned above, if they maintained the reliability in a new model it would be a great off roader.
Wow you guys forgot about Mitsubishi's dark horse the GTO (3000gt vr4) tweaks to the engine setup nets you 320hp and 320ftlbs of torque. One of Mitsubishi's most underrated vehicles.

But then without numbers its tough to keep the production on

"Third row seats folding in very complicated way"
Proceeds to fold them anyway
Pajero, Montero & Shogun!👍
You kept on talking about its lacking of gadgets, but didn't even mention the fact it has a rear diff-lock.
He said twice that
Maybe he thinks he is reviewing Xbox or a ps5.. all the points he mention are the best features of this car
Wife and I love our 04 Montero, if you could get this in Canada, we would love to replace ours with a new one. Sad.
Funny how this generation is one of a fleeting few real off road rally trucks left, I have a 2005 and still love it more every day.
Unfortunately this hasn't been available in the US since around 2006 or so. I'd love to have one but the remaining ones are worn and high mileage.
a good engine matters much more than the painful apps and gadgets .
My 2001 pajero has no safty lane and other crap and I feel it really safe to drive. Just don't be a bad driver and your fine.
stobesy18 all good until someone comes over the crest of that hill on your side of the road for example.
@@gavinwolfe3238 then you just have bad luck that's all
Mines a 2016 pre dpf .....and its great...does everything I want....goes bush, tows van, does long haul, great economy
Even before, this is my dream car. Even they already stop it's production, I will still consider buying a used one now that I can afford to have it. Legend will always be a legend.
Good solid, reliable car
I miss pajero so much
He is my uncle to me
When the times me, Pajero sport, Everest and him hunt down those Druids/ Zealots performing satanic sacrifice in Irelands
He taught us how to knock them out with diesel fumes. The Village thanked us for saving them from satanic panic. I will miss him.
Beautiful shape!!!
Love mine 2006
I grew up in this car, sad to know its leaving us. This is a perfect family car
Now super select 4*4 is
2H - 2 wheel drive
4H - 4 wheel drive high ( centre diff open )
4HLC - 4 wheel drive high with locked centre differential
4LLC - 4 wheel drive low with locked centre differential.
My English is poor - apologies for any mistakes
So the car does what it is supposed to do!
Job well done
I still got my Gen 2 2.8.....400,000ks and still going strong.
From Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and I wish it stayes

The 3rd row isn't 'too easy' to fold? It ony took you 19 seconds.
Those are many by today's standards
Agreed. Not a fan of Pajero but this didn’t seem like a big deal to me.
My old mate Billy..was transported to oz in the 80s ...if he is still alive .tell him to post a comment to his old pal col ..back in the uk ..
Hopefully Mitsubishi will develop a newer platform to compete with upcoming Land Cruiser Prado platform.
No gadget overload...
So a man's car.
Right!
Accident avoidance tech, brains and eyes.
Why discontinue something that’s great...
This and the 4runner was always my go to’s,
Yourself is an accident avoidance tech. Nothing else.
Wishing for its return someday in the future. Its legacy can’t just be forgotten by the future generation
guys toyota is still making their landcruiser pickup that was introduced way back but their are still selling it as a 2020 model, but that old thing is still running strong
How can they stop making the pajero shogun, its far better than the offerings of other car companies, it will be a very sad day in history if this truly iconic world beating 4x4 ends production.
Odessa
*Jacki* *Chan's* car in his movies!
Sooo, pretty much the same as my 2001 Pajero exceed then. Good to know.
This is a final nail in the coffin.
Been driving my Dads pajero for a week and have come to the conclusion that I need one.
Also drove it about 1500km From Namibia to South Africa and I have to say it was the most relaxing drive on that road that I have ever done. Was like driving a lazy boy.
Now I can see where Land Rover went for inspiration for the new defender.
I like it, it comes with everything you need and none of the shit you don't need.
This looks like the Mitsubishi Montero my dad used to have in 2008, I live in the USA.
Sad it was discontinued in NA many years ago. Wish we had them till 2021.
Sad to see the Pajero going, it's a true 4x4 with part time 4wd, solid reliability and not cluttered with non essential junk. My MK2 is 29 years old and does a days work for still. |I was designed to get you from A to B and BACK, not as a fashion statement.
Still a fantastic looking car and way better than the Pajero Sport...they should keep it.
Thorsten Trapp couldn’t agree more!👍🏻
I sold my Pajero and bought the new Prado 150 4.0 petrol. Of course Toyota is much newer and much better, but sometimes I have a great nostalgia and warm memories about my good old friend Pajero.
BTW, the same seat heating and mirror adjusting buttons are the visiting card of Mitsubishi for the last 25 years))
Mitsubishi please don’t stop making this beast car !!!!! Pleaseeee 😢
I have an ns exceed and I love it!
They stopped lancer.. now Pajero.. sad. Both are for reliability
All of the old Mitsubishi iconic names are gone, no more Colt, Lancer, Galant, Pajero.
These cars were the mainstay of Mitsubishi from the beginning.
Wow you guys forgot about Mitsubishi's dark horse the GTO (3000gt vr4) tweaks to the engine setup nets you 320hp and 320ftlbs of torque. One of Mitsubishi's most underrated vehicles.
