That key holder is where you put your key if the battery in the fob goes flat. It will allow you to start the car. Also the centre console is padded from 2018 onwards.

Great review mate, I’d definitely choose the Pajero over its competitors. A mate of mine has this exact model, he rates it highly, as well as a diesel Hilux sr5 of the same year.
While the Mitsubishi has proven to be ultra reliable, the Toyota has had several expensive failures

i would say from the overall it's probably the best car i ever owned.... really capable (diff lock,4h,2h), great fuel consumption, really comfy, nice to drive. not the best quality but comapre with fortuner, prados or other competitors. this is the one.

The newer models actually changed the tail lights as you would've liked it : less length and better LED lights :) Anyway great content as usual! The Montero is a staple here in the Philippines as one of the go to diesel models.

As an owner an Pajero Sport group member congratulations on a good report. Sorry, one notable error was early in the video yos said the Pajero Sport has same engine and gearbox as Triton. Triton does not get the awesome 8 speed.
The knee rubbing issue has been addressed but from 2018 onwards. That 2017 with over 100k is not worth $45k sorry, if it had the average 75000km to 90000km was thoroughly log book serviced $40k to $42k would be real. This one probably $38k.
Love our 2019 GLS with 47ks worth about $44k.
Jim is great in his mechanical appraisal.

Many thanks for doing this vid - I'm a self professed Pajero fan and my QE is my 3rd (had a Challenger too) - fits my lifestyle perfectly - tows a camper trailer outback, Vic high country and Limestone coast regularly without issue. Tow pack, aftermarket suspension, bull bar and bash plates have increased fuel but only by 2lt/100km. Have fitted a catch can and also replaced the intercooler pipes to minimise issues... Gotta say, love that car!

This has helped me cement my thoughts. As a previous owner of a Pajero I can vouch for the super select system and the real advantages it provides. My wife and I are planning a new purchase in coming 12 months to tow a caravan and the Pajero Sport for the money is looking like the right vehicle for us. The equivalent Toyota Prado is close to $20,000 more expensive. I am also not that confident in the Ford Everest reliability and after sales support. The new Pajero Sport is a totally new design but will not be out in the timeframe and I have never been keen to buy the first run of a brand new model.

The headunit freaking out and failing and insane beeping, is the plastic fuse holder that connects to the headunit. Sometimes, in summer, the fuse holder gets a little hot and just pops out.
All you need to do is re-seat it properly. The dash goes co-co-bananas, because anything that is a screen in this car is driven from the headunit.
This took me and my dealer 5 visits to figure out, because it was sporadic. But they were as persistent as I was - do kudos to Berwick Mitsu for finding that out. They were super interested because I had one of the first new Pajero Sports in the country and I was putting a tonne of K's on it.
Apart from that, zero problems. I would go get another one if I was buying again.

This was quite an entertaining video guys.
The rear lights of the Pajero Sport looks like it was inspired by the melting clocks by Dali. Was suprised too find out that the transmission is sourced from Toyota instead of one of the other manufacturers in the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance.
Noticed that the shirt you had on Adam looks like an new Redriven shirt design. Is this the case and if so when will they be in the merch store?
Congrats too on getting a sponsor for today's video and was well placed and none intrusive the way it was inserted into the video so good job on that 👍.
Brilliant video as always guys keep up the good work and look forward to next week's videos as always 👍.

    • @jimjames6558

In regards to the transmission, Mitsubishi has a 30 year history of borrowing Toyota derived Aisin units. From the 4 speed A340F used from the NJ Pajero up until the ML Triton, the A750F in 2009-2021 Pajero, the AC60 in the current Triton and this particular 8 speed shared with the bigger 5.7L URJ200 Series.
There have been a few Jatcos used in Mitsubishi 4x4s but they've always proved to be rubbish. Here's hoping the next Triton/Pajero Sport model retains an Aisin box

I bought its predecessor - a used 2012 Challenger with all the fruit, in 2015. At the time it only had 50,000 kms on it and I picked it up for just a third of it's original purchase price. It's now travelled 300,000kms as my daily commuter and been off-road at several times a year. Outside of scheduled maintenance and wear n tear items ... it's never broken down or given me any issues. And it does everything asked of it from towing to long distance journeys like a champ. Id defintely consider the Pajero sport as a replacement. Best value proposition on the market.

Hi Dan, bought a new GSR April last year my first Toorak Tractor. Sold a VF2 Black Editon Sportwagon. Did 1500KM real quick so I could get the first complimentary service done as we left start of May with friends for a month in the NT. Did 6900kms and loved it. Same as you checked all the competitors and had pretty much the same thoughts although the new MUX was out and I liked it. But the deal breaker was the Paj had the super select 4WD. The piano black gives me the shits but that is about it. Would kill for it to have a heads up display like the Commodore though.

with 4 young kids, living rurally and a limited budget, this is so far our top pick not that the older 2 are well and truly out of car seats and the younger 2 will be in booster style seats from this December, so we won't need anchor points. The Kia grand carnival 2009 model served us so well and I will miss the electric sliding doors, but we need 4wd.

I purchased a 2022 Pajero Sport. I wanted it for towing and a bit of highway driving. I had completed a 200 Km round trip and the range left was 940km. I completed the maths and it was close. Off road it is very sorted with good articulation. I only find it a bit soft with the ride at Highway speeds. I don't get a sore back from driving as the seats are brilliant.

As a serial Mitsi owner on the hunt for a "new" car, a very timely review. Only problem it seems with current Mitsubishis are the looks - what ARE they doing with lights?? My brother has a new ASX and I can't get around the awful headlights....and couldn't agree more about the tail-lights on the Paj Sport...think it would suit me to a tee, but I don't think the missus is going to come at it, because of the looks...

I also fitted a catch can straight up best investment you can make to any Deisel. I also installed underbody aluminium bash plates let’s face it no new car offers decent protection underneath the car .I’ve done 37 tho Klm & two services I did ask before installing the can the dealership had no issue with it. Although Mitsubishi have left the UK, a dealer network has taken over after sales so no worries about that. This is great car, plenty for sale used in the UK with low miles and good price. A solid workhorse or for someone who just likes big heavy cars that can cope with any road and weather condition and capable of fitting every lifestyle. Reliable choice I would imagine.

Thanks for your video and to everyone who has commented with their personal anecdotes and research. I owned a 2012 Challenger and loved it - I wish I never sold it! I'll be getting another 4x4 SUV and whilst I haven't finished all my research yet the Pajero Sport is still top of the list - only possible criteria left is there might not quite be enough space in the back for me in the 7-seat model. Buying cars almost always comes with compromises so I will potentially just have to make do :)

  • @graeme1491

I have just purchased the GLS version and have a few things that buyers need to consider. First of all, the windscreen is tilted back to far, not good for the sun coming in or hitting your head entering the vehicle. The 3rd row seats don’t lay completely flat making it impossible to fit a fridge or draw system and only has 2 tie down points? If the 3rd row is removed, the floor is all uneven and requires a false floor to be specially made with access to the spare wheel lowering point. Aux sockets are only alive when ignition on or in acc not allowing you to lock it up and walk away! The 2nd row seats don’t fold flat so can’t be used as a table or to rest any object on them without it sliding off, also consider the height of the tail gate when opening in your garage as mine hit the roller door just to name a few. Agree no SUV is perfect but my 1997 Holden Jackaroo SE I traded was better designed.

We settled on and bought a new Pajero Sport in early 2020.
We considered all of the competition and the below reasoning, is how we settled on our choice.....
Holden Trailblazer. With Holden going down the tube, it was a big nope. Too risky if holden disappeared and we were left with a worthless warranty.
Toyota Fortuner. Expensive. 3rd row seat design that looked like left overs from a 1990's Prado. No andrid auto / apple carplay. 6 monthly service interval (more freqent than others in the category). Short 5 year warranty. DPF dramas and a class action in progress. Struck this one off the list too.
Ford Everest. Expensive. Short warranty. Ford has a reputation for shithouse customer service. Got on the owners groups. Found stories of owners locked in battles with Ford over Everest's that were less than 12 months old and riddled with rust because they were never painted properly. No thankyou, i will pass.....
Isuzu MU-X. The only real contender. 6 year watranty was better than all but Mitsubishi. Good reputation for reliability. But that interior....... (this was in 2020, the previous generation MU-X....) 🤮🤮🤮🤮. Horrid interior. No rear diff lock (not even an option). No android auto etc etc.....
Bought a brand new Pajero Sport Black Edition (2019 plated) off the lot for $48k. 7 year and 150k warranty, was the deal at the time. Rear diff lock, superselect transfer case, great reports of reliability (bar the crap intercooler hoses, easily and cheaply fixed with aftermarket hoses), android auto / apple carplay, active cruise control.
It was a lot of car for not a lot of money.....
3 years on, still very happy with our choice. Have had a few small cosmetic issues which Mitsubishi have sorted under warranty without any arguments. Have not had a single mechanical or electrical fault. Great cars for the money. 👍

Thing with the elec parking brake. Lots of workshops stuff up and fit the wrong rear discs, there is 2 sizes. Fit the larger ones and the park brake will fail, and unless a mech is on the ball it’ll happen again.
Spoken to a bunch of mechs, they all rate these higher than almost anything in there class.

14:07 - _"To be honest, that's really just an excuse by the dealership to not honour your warranty"_
Why do dealerships often come up with excuses to not honour vehicle warranties and void them, like saying that having a catch can installed might affect the warranty as Jim said?

i love how all car reviewers on yt will never offer really how they feel about cars.. The reason for that is if they mentioned serious flaws and recommend that people don't buy certain cars, that manufacturer would never give them another car for a video. they always just mention minor things that arent really issues.

Thanks Adam - this like the Ford Territory is the poor man’s Prado but one redeeming feature of this ‘covered ute’ is its impressive Super Select constant 4WD system which I wish had in the Hilux - the deal breaker for me with the old Pajero and Prado is the impractical swing out rear tailgate as opposed to lift up - the awful turbo lag is probably still a pain like its Triton parent - but for a budget conscious buyer I think this is great value for money as a reliable dual role urban/regional transporter and off-roader even if you can tolerate towing a small caravan - the rear taillight design is just too eccentric for my taste but a black duco would probably’hide’ this a little.

I've drove pajero sport several times. Love it. But here, he and his buddy (Toyota Fortuner) have a quite bad image because some of the owners are sometimes arrogant. And also people always joking because some of the owners like to install warning equipment 🚨 on their Pajero Sport & Fortuner (u are able to buy warning equipment for your car here in some store even though u are not an government official / police / military)
Just purchase a black Pajero Sport or Fortuner, equip it w/ siren and lights, voila.. u are now have your own unmarked car... 🚓

If they bring this to the North American market with the 3.8 V6 + 9 speed automatic transmission from the Nissan Frontier, it just might sell well. People buy the 4runner a lot there, and Ford can't seem to build enough Broncos to sell. Mitsubishi is struggling in the US with cars that aren't very bad, but not great either.

    • @rexthesheep

It always blows my mind just how much Mitsubishi Motors is dropping the ball in the USA. Maybe they could turn their fortunes around by selling the next-generation Triton and Pajero Sport (or Montero Sport I suppose) there. Especially with rumours of them looking into a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain for the Triton.

Here in Indonesia the GLX and exceed variants comes with a manual transmission, but sadly it's only a 5-speed w/ 136hp
The exceed triton got a 6-speed manual with the 181hp engine so I don't get why they're not offering that in the SUV...
