I have a Pajero and l think the 2H, and 4H is excellent with the 33/67 spit and quite polished traction control. The biggest downfall and often complained about is the inability the operate in 4L with the centre diff unlocked. This makes it difficult to turn with axel windup where high torque is required on reasonable good traction surfaces. ie retrieving a boat or reversing a trailer, particularly with the manual transmission where clutch preservation is desirable. Should be 2H, 4H and 4L with a separate diff lockup button. (Personal opinion). Why is reverse gear such a high ratio anyway, who backs up a such speed?
Thanks for the info, i always use 4H in the desert after watching this i tried 4HLc but after a while and after getting stuck in the sand the gear temperature alarm came on.
Hello when stuck in the sand its normal for the gear temp to go up as there is little air circulation. Pajero gear is very hard to over heat. I recommend to flush your transmission oil and change the filter as a first step.
Hello great to hear from you. Most likely yes it will work but best to add an intercooler due to summer heat. Did you do your project keen to know more
There is no locking between the engine and the wheels, there is locking between the front wheels and the rear wheels. Your transmission (automatic with torque converter and manual with clutch) is between the 4x4 transfer case and the engine.
Long time Nissan Xtrail owner stepped up to a 2007 Mitsubishi pajero VRX diesel. Could find anything on how to use the 4wd properly. Thank you for explaining it in easy to understand description
Excellent vid and well explained, right to the point. I drive uphill and used 4H, thought this is softer to the gear, but half an hour and gear temp illuminate. Stopped to let cool and drive back downhill. Wondering why it is overheated, should I use 4HLc to lock it mechanically and reduce the use of oil? I will change the filter and gear oil next month.
Very good explanation, thank you! I am considering between a Hilux and L200/Triton. I am more inclined towards Mitsubishi due to full time 4WD useable on roads. I have a couple supplemental questions, perhaps you would be able to advise me. 1 - I was not able to find technical data of force distribution range in 4H - 33/67 is default, but can it really go only to 50/50 or even more (such as 10/90 or 90/10) - I have read somewhere that this is possible. 2 - As the VCU uses a liqid that solidifies in high temperatures, is it a problem if there is 35 degrees plus and the group is up to 50 - can it start influencing the liquid? And what about extreme cold, 30 below zero - is the liquid and functionality affected? 3 - Also, can you use the 4h lock on very splippery roads, like in severe storms when the road has large pools of water, or when severe snow conditions?
Hello thank you for the messages. My understanding is the 4H defaults at 33.67 and moves all the way to 50.50. Not aware if it can do 10.90. We use our cars here in extreme heat and have never seen it impact the operation of the VCU. As for driving in locked mode it should only be done in offroad conditions. In rain always recommended to be on 4H so the car can turn properly on normal roads. Check out my website for specialised Pajero Parts. We have traction control on off module at the moment and gear paddle shifters coming soon! www.cronos4x4.com
In my mitsubishi I haven't had any issues with VCU in temperatures below -30c. In Canada, I'll leave it in 4h for snowy roads, unless I'm mashing through 20-40cm of frozen crud. For the most conditions, 4h is totally capable.
Hi,i own a montero but it dsnt have the RD lock button as its showing in urs..may be they dnt offer that here in my country..but would like to understand the difference between 4LLC and the Real differential...will it make a huge difference in terms of capability ?
@Mathew Hangaika R/D lock is rear diff lock, optional feature, you might or might not have it. I f you engage it , you will have equal power going to both rear wheels, usually when you don’t engage R/D lock especially when traction control is off, the wheel which has less traction spins freely and the wheel that touch the ground does not spin.
Good explanation bro. I have 2003 Pajero 3.0 Arab version. How about rpm on 3.0 engine? I saw car rpm on riding sand very high. Which high rpm is normal -is not risky for this engine on offroad? If you know please share.
Very well explained thank very much, my NP 2004 3.8Lt Exceed goes very hard, can be hard on fuel, but fantastic on acceleration, can’t stop it in 4LLC, wants to dig a hole to China.. Love this car, and it’s auto..!!! WHATttttt...
Excellent video - simple & clear! I have a 2018 NX & have only just realised by reading the card above the visor & in your video that when switching from 4HLc to 4LLc & back - the gear lever should be in N. What happens if you do it with the vehicle stopped but in D or P? I have done little 4W driving but may have done this a couple of times not realising it should be in N - could this have caused damage? Appreciate your thoughts. Regards. Laurence 😃
With the central diff locked the torque is 100% available in each axe, front and rear. Not 50%. If your rear axe is on the air you can use 100% of the torque in the front
vraiment merci pour cette vidéo , moi le problème que J'ai dans mon pajero est que lorsque je suis planté dans le sable la seule roue arrière droite qui tourne seul
So 4H is just like an upgraded AWD? AWD is just 2WD then it switches to 4WD when the vehicle feels that it's necessary. Whereas 4H on the Montero is all-time 4WD, but it distributes the power as the vehicle see's necessary. Is that correct? Also, is there any wheel bind in 4H?
Hello Riley so in the Pajero the 4H the power by default is split Front 33:67 Rear percent. The car will adjust distribution all the way to 50:50 when needed. When in 4H there is no wheel binding so you can drive and turn normally with it on the normal roads
Hello on the Pajer Gen 4 you can switch between 2H , 4H and 4Hllc as per the car manual at speed amless than 100 kph. Only 4llc require the car to stop and benin Neutral. This is the power of the super select system on the Mitsuibishi
Do you feel that there's a need for a way to switch off traction control (TC) and possibly also active stability control (ASC) when driving on sand and snow? Doesnt TC and / or ASC get you bogged in quicker due to the car (wheels) being slowed down when it loses grip?
Finally.. Great vid. Now i know what to use and how.. Thanks a lot... 4HLC...SAND... RIGHT UP TO 5TH GEAR...CAN I USE IT WITH THE REAR DIFF LOCK ON....
You are welcome! To be honest they are very different cars and different class interms of power and size. I personally biased to Pajero but can't deny that land cruiser will have more power
Hi I have a mitsubishi pajero 2011 model and I would like to ask whether can I activate the automatic looking system and how to do it I want when I'm driving to automatically look the doors so does it have this feature.
I have 2015 V6 3.5 L Pajero, am leaving for a long road trip of 2400 kms, where I will be using 4W and triptonic as part of trip will involve high altitude driving. Can I use triptonic in 4LLC mode?
I work on a sand mine so I’m always on sand . Mostly it’s hard so I can use 2wd but in soft sand I use 4h . What do you recommend? I only need it for 20-50! Feet at a time
What is the role of rear differential lock button.. i am new to sand driving and when i put my monetro on 4hlc it was taking too much acceleration to move .. but when i put the RD lock off then it was very smooth drive..is it safe to turn it off for long desert driving?
The rear diff button is used when the car is stuck to help in recovery. When turned on it begins to drive both rear wheels evenly and locked together. This allows not only the wheel without traction to continue to spin in the hope of gaining traction, but more importantly, begins to drive the well-grounded wheel that still has traction to spin and move the car.
I currently own the 2008 3L V6 GLS pajero. Recently I've started sand duning here in the middle east. I was doing it previously on 4H. There were some times when im climbing a dune on an incline and the power was very low to the wheels. How much of a benefit will 4LLC provide in terms on incline push ? Also will turning ACS off help while dune bashing ? Sorry im new to this :)
Hello so I personally drive in the desert with 4lLLc. I personally find the power output ideal in low range for desert driving. Also make sure to turn off ASC. However traction is not fully off on yhe Pajero, you will also need traction kill switch which can be found here www.cronos4x4.com and also 2008 has a gear upshift issue in manual model it can be sorted with www.speedecu.com
Pajero owners manual states that you can move from 4H > 4HLc while moving under speeds of 100km.

Hey Buddy, Awesome explanation. Only thing still a mystery is the Rear D/Lock, where do you use it
@Mathew Hangaika R/D lock is rear diff lock, optional feature, you might or might not have it. I f you engage it , you will have equal power going to both rear wheels, usually when you don’t engage R/D lock especially when traction control is off, the wheel which has less traction spins freely and the wheel that touch the ground does not spin.
Hello I made a video explaining how the Pajero R/D Rear Diff Lock Works: ua-cam.com/video/2cBNHMznVe0/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this amazing video!
You are most welcome!
Good explanation bro. I have 2003 Pajero 3.0 Arab version. How about rpm on 3.0 engine? I saw car rpm on riding sand very high. Which high rpm is normal -is not risky for this engine on offroad? If you know please share.
Any high revving is stressful on the engine but with our offroad driving style we push it :)
Excellent video, Look forward to many more
Thank you bro! There is a long list of topics coming up soon
Thanks for this insightful info!! will try and let you know
You are welcome!
So when it’s in 4LLC climbing a very soft sand dune do you leave it in auto to choose its own gears or select the gear you want with the + -
Good explanation... lots of doubts has been clear !!!! Thanks very much

@@SandTrack done 👍
Is there any speed limit to drive in 4LLC. ?
@@Nowandsilva manual says limit is 70KPH however when using it i am able to get to 80KPH
Regards. Laurence 😃
Thank you so much! When switching to 4llc you need to be in N but for rest of 4x4 gears it's okay to do in D.
@@SandTrackGood to KNOW!😊
I see you have a rear differential lock switch there. Why doesn't my Pajero BK have that switch?
There are different models depending on the spec
Hello I made a video explaining how the Pajero R/D Rear Diff Lock Works: ua-cam.com/video/2cBNHMznVe0/v-deo.html
Thank you for this video. Good explanation.

Great stuff! Thanks alot for to the point useful info!
Most welcome bro. Check out my pajero traction loom website www.cronos4x4.com
Yes much thanks from Australia
Thank you for the very helpfull and informative video. 2 thumbs up to you!
You are welcome!
Nice one well explained. Thank you
Glad it helped 😊
What a great explanation
Thanks. Wish the Mitsubishi manual was as well explained.
Thank you for the message!
Engaging 4*4 do we need to stop vehicle put neutral or while driving we can also change 4*4
Yes you can! but only use the rear diff to get out of tricky situations and then switch it off
@@SandTrack .thanks a lot.....
So 4h for towing and off-roading
If the diff is locked in 4LLc mode, then what the R/D Lock button is doing ?
Informative video. Do you always drive on 4llc on dunes? Continues trail on mix high dunes for example. Thank you
I personally like to drive in 4llc, it gives instant torque which I need for the heavy long wheel base
@@SandTrack but does it damage anything in your car??
So 4h is just like AWD? Please explain
yes thats correct
Good explanation, thanks.
Would you say that a Land Cruiser is better than a Pajero Sport?
You are welcome! To be honest they are very different cars and different class interms of power and size. I personally biased to Pajero but can't deny that land cruiser will have more power
Hi, great video. Which one shall I use on gravel. I normally drive long distances on gravel, about 200 km per ride. Thanks.
Hello if you drive on gravel Road with no serous tricky offroad then 4H is adequate 🙂
In simple terms which gear would you recommend to avoid too much wheel spin like to gain a good traction in sticky situations
For simple situations you can use 4H and turn off ASC to get out of sticky situations
I need this car so much
Thankyou Mate, It really Helpfull
Glad it helped
Hi I have a mitsubishi pajero 2011 model and I would like to ask whether can I activate the automatic looking system and how to do it I want when I'm driving to automatically look the doors so does it have this feature.
I have 2015 V6 3.5 L Pajero, am leaving for a long road trip of 2400 kms, where I will be using 4W and triptonic as part of trip will involve high altitude driving. Can I use triptonic in 4LLC mode?
Might be a stupid question but I noticed every time he shift gears, he put the driving mode to neutral. Can I shift the 4 gears in Park mode?
Hello I made a video explaining how the Pajero R/D Rear Diff Lock Works: ua-cam.com/video/2cBNHMznVe0/v-deo.html
What is the max speed you can use 4H on the highway?
