While i would melt at that opportunity, Justin's Wal doesn't seem to be all that special. Or, at least, his MAIN Wal. It's just a standard Mahogany body with Birdseye Maple and chrome hardware, which are all standards among the Mk 2 Wals.
Well.....it took over 600 episodes, but you made it. The BASS of BASSES. I own a beautiful MK1 fretless WAL. I bought mine because of the other worldly bass playing of Mick Karn (Japan). Such amazing basses with so much variety especially in the studio. If you had a bassist demonstrating it, we'd all be better for it (just kidding). Other players (mainly UK) include Nigel Griggs (Split Enz), John Illsley (Dire Straits), Percy Jones (Brand X), Nick Beggs (Kajagoogoo), Derek Forbes (Simple Minds), Alan Spenner (Roxy Music) and many many more :)
Very interesting on these basses. I think the leather cool, it would great to see the tooled version also. Very complex and adjustable pickup design. I can see why where sought after. Awesome.

I thought I recalled reading that Wal's Pete "Fish" Stevens cut his teeth at Shergold but I can't find it so maybe it was suggested in a past conversation on Shergold and Wal. What I do know is Ian Waller was building and tinkering with Guitars a Basses since the 60s. He did own atleast one Shergold. Post War US trade embargoes greatly limited the accessibility of American made brands for the UK and Europe, so the locals made their own where they'd influence each other. The Shergold guys were making parts for Burns and Hayman. Their shape may have been something ubiquitous to the UK player. The original Wal was actually something of a hybrid of a Fender Mustang and a Gibson EB3. The shape evolved from there. I suspect the Shergold shape may have played an influence but it may have been very minor. Put a Shergold next to a Wal mk1 and they're more different they one may suspect. A bit like putting.a Wal mk2 or mk3 next to an Enfield, sure there's influences but they're quite different.
yep , never seen or even heard of a Wal bass , but it is cool , sounds great , luv the leather guard , the whole thing is just sick. great set as always Mark , and great production as always Jen. The place was thumpin.
Hi Mark Hi Jen my name is Koen Leliveld and I’m from Sauble Beach Ontario Canada and it’s my 20th birthday today. Thanks for the Rush Mark. They are my absolute favourite band. Cheers guys
I lost my mind at White Sands campground in Sauble Beach 20+ years ago. If you happen to find it (most likely wandering down the road looking for a wayward Frisbee) could you please ask it to come on home to the Kawartha Lakes region? He is sorely missed by his family. Thank you in advance!
It's thumping Thursday!!!! Yes the most wonderful day of the week!! To make it even better it's on of my favorite models.. Bass is best...... can't spell thumping Thursday without about BASS!!!! Still would be nice to see a real bass player demo these machines.. good effort Mark.
I think this is the first time that Mark (and Norm too) has featured a #Wal bass on #ThumpinThursday! And now for the setlist: 1. Rush-Spirit of Radio 2. Tool-Schism 3. Red Hot Chili Peppers-Give it Away

@@Remyonbass251 Because Carlos is from another time, and I, for one, am proud of him for taking the time to figure out how to post on here. I find his musings and reminiscence to be of great value.
Hey, I play an es-335 through a 50s Magnatone Troubador ( rebranded Harmophone). It is the best sounding amplifier I have ever experienced. I've seen a few videos of Magnatone guitars, especially the Mark III which, I think Paul Bigsby may have designed, I like the look of the 60's Mark VIII as well. Do you ever run accross any of those, any chance of a demo on the show?
The only wal I ever played was Mark from Hed(PE)`s. He didn't play it with the band, he just had it because he was a big rush fan. I was meeting up with one of his roomates about a band he was trying to start, and Mark wanted to see my newly aquired fender geddy lee jazz bass. This would have been around 2000, before fender started making non limited edition geddy lee basses. The bass has since been stolen, wish i still had it. I don't think I will ever own a wal, too damn expensive for what they are
Nobody brought the funk rock jams like Manhattan Transfer. If you haven't heard their stuff I highly recommend it. Think Band of Gypsies meets On The Corner/LiveEvil Miles Davis with some mid 70s Santana and The Meters thrown in for good measure.
Neck Pickup: The Spirit of Radio - Rush
Middle Pickup: Schism Tool
Bridge Pickup: Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers
6:36 "Justin Chancellor's Wal is the only one I've ever played"
I wish I had that problem.
Just casually mentions he played Justin Chancellor's bass... I guess it's no big deal or something
Haha I nerded out at that part
While i would melt at that opportunity, Justin's Wal doesn't seem to be all that special. Or, at least, his MAIN Wal.
It's just a standard Mahogany body with Birdseye Maple and chrome hardware, which are all standards among the Mk 2 Wals.
@@darkySp yeah, it's more the fact that you are playing the Wal that laid down so many famous Tool bass lines
@@darkySp Wal's are special, full stop. No need for modifications.
Yeah, right. No big deal.
The tone of this bass Is like honey for my ears

You're so lucky. I've only played a WAL once, and it was the greatest bass I've ever played. One day I'll get a lefty WAL all my own. One day.
Good luck Brad :)
I jamed with Wal in a studio below his workshop. The best.
High Wycombe nr the hellfire club lol . Wal’s studio (then) 78/9
Mick Karn. 👍🏻 Alan Spenner 👍🏻
I had a chance to play one of these at a guitar show. It felt like a super upscale version of a twin humbucker G&L and a really unique tone..
How I would love that bass. Thank you John Gustafson for being one of the shining lights in my life
Company was called 'Electric Wood'!
I LOVE THIS. AND YES RUSH AND TOOL. I really want this bass... Can't afford the minimum 4500 price tag tho
I realize this is 5 years later, but you would be lucky to find one of these for under $20k in 2024.
Tomorrow is Buddy Holly' s birthday so how about a Buddy Holly song on Flat Top Friday?
It makes me so happy when Tool features 😂
It sounded real nice through my car stereo system on the way home from work. The sound was deep and vibrated through me and the car SWEET!
A powerful beast has been unleashed at Norms. Thy name is WAL
Oooooooh ya!!!!! Finally a Wal bass!!!!!
Thanks for the Rush boss
I love the sound of this bass
I remember Percy Jones of Brand X played one, a fretless... fantastic!

One cool freaking bass! Actually enjoyed thumpin' Thursday!!
That's one badass looking Bass.
As a bass player I love thumping Thursday
There’s nothing cooler than a leather pickguard! Plus those humbuckers are sweet!
I love that bass.
My dream bass!!
Wal basses are amazing.
Ok! Even on bass day. That’s a cool bass. Chords sound especially good on this one
I understand why they're in demand.Sounds great, versatile.
Such a cool bass!!
So. Rad!
Sweet bass, sweet songs
See, Mark? Not so bad to make Thumpin Thursday happen. This was a juicy one.
Yay! An esoteric guitar! I haven't seen one of those in a long time!
Thumpin' Thursday: a high light of my week, despite the anti-bass comments.
Undoubtedly the greatest basses ever made. Once youve owned one you cant go back. The Mk1 are the ones to own. The pickups are totally different..
The body and pickups look very similar to shergold basses from the same era, I wonder if there's any connection?
I thought I recalled reading that Wal's Pete "Fish" Stevens cut his teeth at Shergold but I can't find it so maybe it was suggested in a past conversation on Shergold and Wal.

Yes legendary. The new workshop is in Surrey. Was a very special treat to visit the shop and see new ones in the making.

Alan Spenner was on the list too - another Roxy Music bassist.

That’s a very cool looking and amazing wal bass but I’m a little confused I didint hear to much treble and highs to it. Is that first gen one active?
How utterly weird - I was thinking about Geddy Lee and Wal just yesterday.
Easily one of the coolest instruments ever featured on GotD...
I am one of those "bass nerds" and I want a bass made entirely out of "African cool wood"!
Mark "Bass Nerd" Agnesi
I owned and played exclusively JG0017 for 20 years or so 🙂
Damn I never seen one. So rad. I learned something today.
Hey Jen, I downloaded ur soundbite (@6:07) 4a ringtone!
Man you know people give you guys a hard time about the basses but you have to admit they deliver! HOWEVER! Gotta do a Maton!
It's a wild thing
Episode #602 & still no appearance by Jen! Un-cool!!
All I can say is - BABY.
Hay Mark look at The Traveling Wilbury videos Jeff and George both play Danelectro guitars plus you buddy Tom playing a bass
It would have been good to see a bassplayer play this fine instrument.
Now, he's eyeballing stickers!
Troy Strain ,hahaha, yeah
Dang the bridge was so awesome. BTW have any vintage ukuleles?
NEWSTED 🤘
Mick karn plays fretless wal bass too
👍👍
Paul Simonon from the Clash is in that list, pretty cool
i always like the bass-player-lip that Mark gets when he's diiging in on bass. We'll make a bassist of you yet, sir.
McCartney played one around '89 or '90 too, it was a 5 string model.
I’m not a bass player, but boy that’s way cool.
Xfire Xx ...me either, and i thought the same
Boris used that bass when he joined the Spiders.
#weirdassThumpinThursday
Muse Rediscovered, 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Hehe, or throbbing Thursday?
Killed it on Schism. When’s the new album coming?
EVC1959 probably another 5 years
I know the pieces fit
It's here

Actually a rad thumpin' Thursday....
Mark going old school with the rolled up sleeves! 90’s Boy Band Tribute?
GO RAVENS!!!
There you have it. Mark exited for a bass for 12 min. Enjoy it while it last...
My goal in life is to own a Wal. Hopefully one touched by JC, but that’s really a stretch.
Was there a car accident right before he plays? I hear a car horn and then a Bang!
How about "Psycho Killer" some Thumpin Thursday?
Thomas L killer bass line
You should do a G and L ASAT or other assorted G and L guitars
