Fantastic bass, fantastic player. One request ... could you crank up that big old SVT on some future Thumpin' Thursday? I see it sitting there week after week and I don't think I've ever heard it.
Lovely playing! '79 can be a dodgy year for Music Man basses- I had one and the truss rod channel was straight, so it was ineffective and was just exerting longitudinal pressure on the neck which warped it (!). I bet this one is fine as Norm's tech will have inspected it thoroughly, but it's a common issue with these basses from that time. The reason has never been fully explained. Side note: Leo was designing and tooling up for G&L guitars and basses for release in 1980, and for a short time he was producing for both companies.
Love musicman basses. Even the cheaper, newer import versions are great. But a vintage one has an amazing mojo. I had the chance to play one on a recording session - so much fun.
The Stingray is a bass model that I underestimated and misunderstood for a lot of years. It had been a part of my world since I was 5 years old and USA for Africa had recorded "We Are the World". When I began learning bass 11 years later in '96, had I known the Stingray was (the late) Louis Johnson's weapon of choice in his slapping odyssey, I would've been eager to get one of my own. Greg's thumping on this one is not at all slouchy itself. It's actually making me wonder if Chris Squire ever cut on one if these.
The first time I saw a Music Man bass, I thought it looked like a failed Fender copy. When I heard it, I quickly changed my mind. It sounded fantastic. I think it was a late 70's or early 80's bass. In any case, I started to like the sound and Stingray bass in general. Wish I could afford to buy one myself. One day maybe..
COOOOOOOOOOOATES! When I was just learning bass, I was really turned on by the bass tone of Kevin O'Neal of The Bus Boys, and Felix Robinson of Angel. And gee, they were both using Stingrays at the time. Huh...
I got one new in `80 I believe that was natural wood. It fell out of a truck going to gig and got a gouge. I had it filled in and had to sell cuz my shoulder couldn`t take anymore. I think it was $550.
Could ya find a REAL bass player please?!! Sheesh!! ........ ......totally KIDDING!! This dude killed it! Seems like he can play ANY style! What an amazing gift for Thumpin Thursday!!! We need him every week! :)
As a guy who collects preEB StingRays and have 25 of them, the 79's were the worst year of production. The necks were often poorly made with the rod inserted straight instead of bowed for relief so you witness rods overtightened and break at the nut. The reason many of them are black bodied is due to factory refinishing as they could not decide on a paint format that worked and dried properly plus Leo was fed up with the returns to CLF. The only redeeming feature is the preamp, they were really stable by that stage and the added resistor didn't drain the battery. Most collectable are the long pole '76 radio knobs, followed by the 77-78's (white pickups especially). The 80-82 made by Grover Jackson are by FAR the best pre-EB's, the necks are stable, the rods work and they don't discolour but they are technically not 'Fender made' instruments.
1979 was the best 79 so far
An absolutely outstanding Bass and Greg, you could not have demoed it better, I think you enjoyed that!!! ♥♥♥♥😎😎
Oh man....that bass really punches!🎸👍
Greg ENJOYED this stingray and I enjoyed hearing what he did. Rock on bass man!
I too am of the ‘79 vintage. However this bass has fared much better than I.
“Aged like wine/Aged like milk” and all.
This is a daaaangerous place!
I was counting on some '80s KC, thanks.

Mr.Coates played a Gretsch 6071 bass using that SVT last week's episode
@@turdoirishmanThanks. I will check it out.
Seconded
George Young liked to use Stingrays on AC/DC records, so does Cliff Williams

I'm not sure but poplar may have been more common than alder on the original Music Man instruments. The ash in the "70s was HEAVY (on Fenders too).

I owned one of these for one day. I bought it cheap at a pawn shop and flipped it same day for a $300 profit.

That bass sounds good on my crappy phone
I really want one. They’re still just about affordable and not quite in the realm of crazy money.
