The demise of the "AA" category title is something I always feel saddened by. These types of games which don't try to push for maximum tech/reach/whatever, but have smaller goals, and slightly quirkier mechanics… especially as a single player only experience, they certainly deserved more. I'm not sure this is one I think I could get into, but I certainly appreciate its place, and enjoyed your look at it as always!
Yeah, it says a lot that Hellblade's marketing campaign was built on the goal of bringing said AA category back. Though I think there is space for all (big games, small games, middle of the road games) it saddens me a little, too. Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video despite not digging Murdered Soul Suspect (GRAVE digging). Okay. I'm stopping now.
I totally agree that this is an underrated game. For me i see this kind of a game as a remnant of what gaming used be, what gaming was for a long time. A solid single player experience, no microtransactions, no cynical marketing campaign, no built in grinding, no pointless multiplayer. This type of game truly is a dying art. A game i recently replayed i feel falls into this category would be Singularity, definitely worth a look. Murdered Soul Suspect is also not the only case of a underrated single player game not making enough money and bankrupting a developer, LA Noire and Kingdoms of Amalur did this.

Murderered: Soul Suspect was one of my favorite games of 2014. Ghost powers and the world of spirits that haven't moved on. It was a great story and fun to traverse in.
I ended up marathoning this game in a single day with my brother observing. By time it was finished the two of us were both surprised by how much we enjoyed it, me in the pilot's seat and him simply watching and enjoying the story. It's not an incredible game, no, but I always felt like it deserved better than it got. The only major complaint I have is that all the documents left by Ronin's wife paint such a saintly image of him that she herself feels like less of a character and more of an object. There's only one instance in which you get a sense that there was trouble with the marriage due to her own circumstances, but after that it's just right back to how wonderful Ronin is with every journal entry you find. Made her feel more like a fantasy than a person that actually existed. Nevertheless, was still a great experience, and one I think I'll have to make time for again this year. Thanks for doing a video on it.
Same here, it's very surprising! I'm in two minds about Julia - where I agree that some codex entries painted her as a 2-dimensional-ish adoring wife (borderline obsessed with Ronan) I thought there were enough entries detailing her worries and caution to put more flesh on her bones. That it felt like a diary gave a much more intimate picture as well. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment :)
I quite enjoyed this game, played through it a few times. I like that it tries different things, it’s not a game that’s easy to classify and it has some unique aspects to it. I agree that the detective parts were lacking though. I often felt they were asking me for clever thinking when really they wanted the most basic thinking possible.

I really did like this game. Is it a masterpiece? No. Cutting edge? No. A bit clunky at times? Sure. But the production values were pretty decent (for a B-tier game they managed to have a lot of different characters/actors in the game for instance), the premise was interesting, and the gameplay was at least somewhat unique.
Yes!!! I platinumed this game! The story was so good and I loved finding pieces to the stories. Now I want to play it again. I took a trip to Salem soon after. Thanks for always apprieciating games like this.
The best thing about this game is the atmosphere! It's perfect for me, spooky but not disturbing! The ghosts are just normal people who have died trying to move on! It's not constant jumpscares or grotesque disturbing stuff like resident evil or for the older gamer, project zero! You want to help the ghosts not run away screaming. There aren't very many haunted house games out there but those that are focus on the ghosts being horrific, scary things from hell... This is totally different and I love it! I felt so happy helping the poor souls find peace even if it was a bit shallow in terms of execution.

I recently bought this game again (first time I played it I was like 14) and I love it! This time I took more time to find the collectibles and piece together the side stories and this game really is an underrated gem. Perfect for a single player lover like me. The plot, the voice acting, the music are all memorable for me.
Yeah, you've got to love a 'good seven' - an ambitious game, a game made with love, a game that's 'just fun'. So maybe your game didn't change the world. Maybe it's buggy, or it has terrible VO, or it bafflingly forgot to include co-op, or it bafflingly decided to include co-op... it's still a weird little piece of art.
I couldn't get into the game. I thought it was a little slow but now that I am better at playing stealth games I might try to play this again. It's a game that I've always wanted to get into.
I picked this game up a while back but never got around to playing it. At 8 hours in length, it's impossible to continue using time required as an excuse. I really enjoyed this look back and will without a doubt be spending a lazy Saturday with this one at some point in the future.
I just want to say that I’m really glad that you made a video on this game, because it is definitely underrated! Also, Abagail looks very similar to Wednesday Adams in addition to the comparison you made.
Honestly such a well made video. I do think the game deserves more attention than it got and honestly same with your channel. The editing and quality of the video is very impressive and just makes me more excited for the future.
I definitely didn't forget the game. I'm playing it again. I first played it 3 times because I stuffed up missable trophies. Since then I play it every now and then. I generally don't find horror games scary and while for the most part I don't find this game scary either, I genuinely find the demons to be scary. It's mostly their scream that chills me. I've never had those bugs in the PS4 version.
I remember when this came out, I had a choice between it and the evil within. And while one is clearly just a better overall game, I'm glad I picked murdered. For years, it's felt like I was the only one who played it. It's not a great game, but it is a good one, and one I have a bit of a soft spot for. I just wish the ideas and mechanics were able to be expanded on and refined in a sequel or spiritual successor. But given the time frame of what was coming out at the time, it was honestly dead on arrival.
I played this recently, owned it for years. It was perfect for me: cinematic, emotional, interesting story, great find-the-killer-thriller in general, where the clues and stuff really made me wanna progresss and understand it all, and get the freaking killa. Also didn't expect the detective-girl-relationship and all.
I found this wondering what other people had to say because I was planning on making an essay about it as well. It's interesting to see where our opinions line up and where they diverge. I would have liked if Airtight was able to make a sequel, set in the same world, that improved things.
A sequel could've been very interesting; the mystery elements in the story were quite effective, so it would have been nice to see more supernatural crimes being solved by Ronan and Joy. Thank you for watching!
I know this video is three years old but yeah I agree this game is very underrated and should get more recognition. I hope either a sequel comes out (if hasn’t already and I’m unaware) or even a re-make. Sure it has its flaws and not action packed by any stretch of the imagination but easily hands down one of the best that came out of ‘14.
If you like Murdered Souls Suspect, you might as well give the Blackwell series a try. Unlike Murdered Souls, it manages to have a consistent and good narrative over the course of 5 games.
I bought this game because the label for the PS3 was blue (This was cause Sony was trying to make the ps3 spines look more like the ps4 spines, all it did was make those games look out of place) but I really wanted a blue spine game so I picked it up and read the description and it sounded super interesting. I started playing it recently and it's actually been really enjoyable. I'm going for the platinum which isn't too difficult since the trophies are almost all collectible and story focused and I've been having a blast solving the mystery and finding collectibles. I really wish this game wasn't just forgotten about cause it's SO FUN!
I like the appreciation for this game, but I don't see it as a "B" game. Deadly Premonition fits that category better, this is mainstreamed better but hit the market dated. It wasn't groundbreaking but solid, immersive and shows brevity with wit. I've been looking for a game like this for awhile and right now it's only $2 on PS4. We need more games like this, and less games like Destiny
Another great video! I also like this game despite all it's flaws. the game has a real personality something that is missing in a lot of triple a games.
I completely agree with the video, the game is great and never got any the popularity it deserved, I wish it was more then a once off small game that will never get anymore than that
Great video! I played this on PS3 when it got released and I really liked it too. It's far from perfect but it's a fun game if you don't take it to serious. :)
Great idea for a new series! It feels, in terms of the voice acting, like a spiritual twin to Darkness, the Jackie Estacado character (voiced brilliantly by Kirk Acevedo). Another good example of how casting the right actor can bring so much to the game. I'll have to look this one up on the Playstation store! It sounds interesting enough to give it a go.
After watching this video, if you were to star in a ghost video game like this, it'll turn in a comedy routine XD Welcome back! (even if you didn't leave the internet, but still) I am one of the "apologists" of this game, but now with this video, you encapsulated lots of my thoughts and look back on the days when I played it. I remember it was my 3rd year college and I sat and finished this game is one sitting. This was also the game I was anticipating, I downloaded it's trailers on my Android 2.1 phone (2013 was wild). On the point of *story* , I love it because it reminded me of the ghost/horror novels I used to read in highschool, which while not filled with violence or gore and stuff, and a very "mature" air to them. Felt like you were reading a "real" story. The ending in particular, I think, was a very strong aspect of the story for me. And equally as good were the *side-quest stories,* which played so well on the fragility of human perception. It wasn't until few quests in Witcher 3 that I found that idea tackled so well. I think I got a bit emotional at one of the stories back then. Rarely do I find a game where most of the *characters* click with me. Ronan and Joy's dynamic is so well balanced and well written, and even Rex's story was good. I wasn't much fan of the "game" of Murdered, although nothing can beat cat possession. The atmosphere as solid, and you could feel the sense of place in the Salem's "open" world. It was clear Airtight was airtight (sorry) on budget and time. Your point of *B-game* is apt. 2000s PS2/GC/Xbox era was full of these, and were the ones that carried interesting ideas in narrative/gameplay.
I know this video is a year old now but Ronan being hit by the door isnt a plot hole. He mentions being hit by the door to the ghost lady and she explains that the building has been consecrated and ghosts can not walk through it. A ghost needs to wait for a living person to open a consecrated buildings door to be let inside or find an open window.
This was what I was thinking too. You can argue that it's a dumb rule, but at least it's a consistent one that was never broken. A dumb plot hole joke was made for the sake of it disregarding or not paying attention to the story she's critiquing.
The combat was one of the things that brought this down for me, it felt like something put in the last month of development because they were probably like "Well we have to have action otherwise it'll be too boring!" and it was unnecessary to add. These were some of the most frustrating things in the game. Otherwise though sadly once you beat it, there's hardly any replay value unless you want to finish your collectathon with how many pick ups there are.
It’s quite funny actually. Back when this came out, people were treating it harshly. Ranging from mediocre to just bad, like Caddy did. People believed the reviewer’s views instead of trying it for themselves. And that’s disappointing.
I agree this game is underrated I know I have a couple issues but I still have fun playing it I got digitally on my PS4 for $2 and now I got a physical copy of it on my PS3 for $1
Great video! I enjoyed this game when it was a murder mystery, but not as much when it was a stealth game. I wish they had cut the stealth altogether and gave the detective side more depth. Also, the world building was hit and miss. I loved the ghost stories, but I wish the in-universe rules were more consistent.
still one of my favorite games. sure, it wasn't perfect, but it didn't need to be. Story is interesting enough to focus on it, characters are different and unique and the gameplay mechanics are something else....plus let's be honest Ronan was kinda lovable in a "grumpy old man" way
You explained the game pretty well. I now know whether I want to buy the game or not. Immediately after finishing this video I searched up for something similar about L.A. Noire on ur channel, but couldn't find anything. Can u make a video about that game too and explain it please? Thank you for the content.
If you'd like a little bit more possession in your dead guy video games, I'd recommend another forgotten game, Geist for the GameCube. One of that system's few mature offerings.
Good game, got really good during the graveyard level. Atmosphere is top notch. It’s not perfect but definitely unique and some parts are all out creepy. Solid 8/10.
Not an amazing game, but definitely underrated. I particularly enjoyed the setting and atmosphere. And there were some genuinely scary moments. An improved sequel could potentially be a great game, but sadly we'll never see it. Hopefully someone else explores some of the ideas here at some point in a different game though. I love the whole "solving the mystery of your own death" angle.
The story is interesting for the most part and has a great twist ending, Ronan is a likeable character who is actually interesting. I liked the interaction between him and joy as well, they had really good chemistry. I would say the gameplay is what let's it down a bit, the detective elememt is great but the combat is meh. Also once there is just not much replayability due to it's linearity
I actually have it on my PS3! I think I should revisit it, as I like just paranormal games. I am interested in story! By the way, Noa, I started to make my own game and actually progress in doing it! It will be a platformer where you can manipulate time, so that platforms and enemies are moving backwards. Will probably be mobile game, but I am just happy just making it. aahhhh, I get such a joy and fullfilment making it! It will not be groundbraking game of the year, but it will have a top notch soundtrack! I don't know why I am writing this, maybe because I am obsessed with my game and think about it 24/7, but thank you for making all those videos and showing that games have a lot of depth. Throughout the years it developed my taste towards artistic point of view! :)

I played this game a couple of years ago on the PS4, but I never got around to finishing it, maybe I will someday. I thought Jason Brooks acting was excellent, his voice fitted the character perfectly. I definitely would have preferred the game to be more sandbox. I think it would have been more fun, when possessing the townsfolk, if they'd had a huge array of humorous thoughts and if you could have had free reign to make them do absolutely anything you wanted, they just seemed too one dimensional, I think that was a missed opportunity. Overall, it was a great game and I did enjoy it.

I have grown a likeness to this game, those people who shite on this game yet loves those heavy "realistic" story (ends up being boring) > gameplay made me like this game much more than as a young lad back in 2014 already in 2024. Despite it's flaws I won't mind playing this game one time over triple a games, it is kind of unique but very simple nonethelesss, screw those people and just make sure to support indie devs also.
This game was pretty decent. I enjoyed it especially after all the bad reviews it got, this game among many was starting to make me realize how inept mainstream critics are at being critics.
@@civilwarfare101 Not true at all. It is their review. If they are shackled like that, then they are shackling themselves and not giving an actual honest from the heart review.

What a video! Enjoyed it from start to finish. This game has a special place in my ❤. Thank you for this... Subbed!
I really like(d) this game, the same with Remember Me, I wish it had attracted more attention.
Bond8789 old comment I know, but I really enjoyed this and Remember Me as well. Remember Me was criminally underrated.
Thank you for the recommendation - I'll be sure to check it out!
@@CritiqueQuestGames Can confirm. All of the Blackwell games are really good.
I thought Soul Suspect had a good narrative, especially some fairly interesting twists.
@@Liberator130 so did i
I bought this game because the label for the PS3 was blue (This was cause Sony was trying to make the ps3 spines look more like the ps4 spines, all it did was make those games look out of place) but I really wanted a blue spine game so I picked it up and read the description and it sounded super interesting.
This is like a nostalgia to me, thank you.
Your channel is so underrated you deserve more views and subscribers!!
Kinda wish it would let you influence more of the NPC's and object to get that Ghost Trick vibe. Great video!
this is a great review, really hoping you start making them again!
I agree about personality - Murdered Soul Suspect has it spades!
Thank you for watching
The game also gives an different kind of sad vibe when u finish the story and Ronan moves over (because there is no free roam after)
Got it on sale for 2 bucks and I’m actually having a good time with it
I just saw it on sale for 2 bucks figured I might as well check it out
A remake of this would be awesome
He got knocked over by the door because those buildings are consecrated, that's why he cant enter unless the door is already open
Good to see you making videos again!
I completely agree with the video, the game is great and never got any the popularity it deserved, I wish it was more then a once off small game that will never get anymore than that
Great video! I played this on PS3 when it got released and I really liked it too. It's far from perfect but it's a fun game if you don't take it to serious. :)
I like how murder soul suspect is to be forgotten, but I own the game on ps4, so it's never going to be forgotten
Agreed, and I still love those character monologues during the loading screens of The Darkness :)
Absolutely love this game, just can't seem to get past them pesky demons in the Mental Hospital 🙄
U gotta hide lol
You haven't made it past that stage yet , it's been already two years lmaoo 💀💀
@@fword_hok because I stopped trying !
Get your ass over here and help 😂
After watching this video, if you were to star in a ghost video game like this, it'll turn in a comedy routine XD
Welcome back! (even if you didn't leave the internet, but still)
I am one of the "apologists" of this game, but now with this video, you encapsulated lots of my thoughts and look back on the days when I played it.
Thank you for watching! There just aren't enough supernatural murder mysteries in the world :)
still one of my favorite games. sure, it wasn't perfect, but it didn't need to be.
I honestly regret deleting this game from my 360, before even playing it! But I just didn't have the time!
I really enjoyed this game, but much more in this review .. I haven't come across such a brilliant and fun work in a long time. Kudos for author :-)
It's on PSN for $1.99 gone try it
If you'd like a little bit more possession in your dead guy video games, I'd recommend another forgotten game, Geist for the GameCube. One of that system's few mature offerings.
Great video/game review! You're very smart. 🙂
Another game sold by the brilliant Noa! Wonderful review, as always.
Thank you for watching!
Good game, got really good during the graveyard level. Atmosphere is top notch. It’s not perfect but definitely unique and some parts are all out creepy. Solid 8/10.
I wish they did more sidequests. There were a lot of ghosts I wanted to help out but wasn’t allowed to.
I have this game on disc and I wanna play it so bad but I lost it and I been looking for it for days
I remember I did the pre order glitch with this game and was able to play it
I actually have it on my PS3!
That's wonderful - I wish you all the best on your game development (and soundscape) journey!
I'm so happy you could take something meaningful away from these little videos. Thank you for watching, supporting my content, taking the time to comment, and share :)
And above all, good luck!!
@@CritiqueQuestGames Thank you! Going to bomb a steam with mediocre games at the start, but it's a learning process. Thanks so much and good luck you too! Keep shaping the future of games and inspire to make good games! :)
I would love to see this as an actual movie that would be fun
Just finished this game, I found it to be quite good despite the voice acting being off at points
This is a game I honestly wished has a sequel that takes place in the second most haunted place in the world
This game got shit on for no reason. Was HIGHLY enjoyable. Not perfect, worth playing though.
I just picked this up at EB games used for 10 dollars XD
Can’t wait to play it
love this video. we need more like it
I played this game a couple of years ago on the PS4, but I never got around to finishing it, maybe I will someday.
It is such a shame he hasn't acted in a video game since, the same goes for Cassidy Lehrman (Joy). I feel like this is one of the only times I wanted a game to be a sandbox haha! Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts
It's been a while for me but it's great to watch another of your videos! I feel like I'm back in 2012 agian! Gosh has it been that long? Damn I'm old lol I really hope you do a Resi 2 video.
On my second play-through of Resi 2 right now :)
This game is currently on sale for $1.99 for PS+ Members at the PlayStation Store. The sale expires after the 22nd of November 2019 tho. 😊
I really like this I played it many times I feel this is underrated I hope they make another game like and make it even better!! But I do like to know what them markings on the floor mean through out the game
Mainstream critics are the worst. They think they know, but really don't.

It's not so much they don't know, it's that their job doesn't allow much in the way of actual nuance.
@@civilwarfare101 Not true at all. It is their review. If they are shackled like that, then they are shackling themselves and not giving an actual honest from the heart review.
@@claytonhayes2760
It has nothing to do with "honesty". Honest reviews can also be shit. I am not even saying game journalists are good, fact of the matter is, I think their reviews are more of a day one impressions write up than an actual analysis.
The way their profession works doesn't allow for much actual nuance.
@@civilwarfare101 you and I are not going to agree on this. This nuance excuse just don't cut it for me. It is B.S. Have a good day
I saw this accidentally…and found it looked refreshingly different
(This video was the next one after I watched “official trailer” not in PS store.
I’m still on fence but leaning towards WTH 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks great video will definitely subscribe
This games is a masterpiece, I really wish it was a bit longer. So underappreciated but then again in a world where the masses flock to mindless games like Call of Duty or Elden Ring, well not too surprised
I first played this on my xbox I enjoyed the game and now 2022 I'm playing it on my ps4 for the trophys and I still enjoy the game it's a good game
How’s this channel not big???
Great Game has me hooked
I loved this game

Hello is anybody here or I'm I late to the party 👋 I came looking for information for the game and i just bought it now . Thanks for the review . Just subed. 👋👋
I'm 2 yrs late but the creator's has to make this right and do a sequel I believe that a sequel could bring this almost masterpiece back to life and put more longer hrs into the story Make a damn sequel for God sakes
