Dude, your vid just encouraged me to look again at my temperamental hi-hat. I hadn't thought that it would be failed solder underneath the rubbery adhesive on the Piezo. Also that my PD140-DS was about to be sent off for repair... following your guidance allowed me to find that the piezo under the centre cone was totally disconnected from the wires. Thanks for the Vid
Glad to help! I don't get why the digital snare doesn't have any reinforcement on the wires of the piezos, many of my older Roland pads do. There could be a reason that I'm not privy to, I guess. Definitely worth checking the piezos on any temperamental pads!
Old Roland gear is absolutely bullet proof. (I've had a TD-30 kit for 10 years, there's a *22 year old* PD-120 pad in my set, everything still works perfectly). Sounds like the new stuff is... not so much. At the current prices they're charging, that gives me pause on upgrading.
Today I fixed my pd-140ds by replacing this part as well. I bought the drum used and now I know why it was sold :-/ however I had the problem that rimshots where created when I did not play one. Thank you for this video. Exchanging the basket is easy an expensive at the same time.
I was having all sorts of triggering issues with my rims. Although it was dusty inside the drum in the end I had to do a factory reset. Problem cured.
Nice video, glad you fixed it, also it seems like you have a new hi hat cymbal, where is it from. Keep up the good work 👍👍
Thanks! Well spotted - it's a Lemon LE-HHC12. Review coming soon 👀
@@TheeDrumWorkshop Nice can't wait
Very nice video Luke! In the end of the video, you mention that you would probably try to attach the repaired basket to an acoustic snare shell. Did you try that indeed? I am very curious if that will work and if you will get the same great trigger results as with an original Roland PD140DS.
Thanks,
Eric
Thank you! So far, the one acoustic shell I've tried doesn't quite work out. The bearing edge is a different shape and I can feel the edge of the basket struggling to conform to it. I didn't want to damage it so didn't try forcing it on with the hoop/head. If I get the chance, I'll try another.
How much was replacement part?
Hello! I'd like to know the electronic diagram of the circuit that connects the piezoelectric sensors up to the USB connector on the Roland PD-140DS.
There is no point as you can not purchase the chip it uses.
I have tama snare drum (14 inches size)and also I decided to buy Roland head trigger basket for PD-140DS so,can l know it’s match and powerful to my drum?
If I wanted to do a sort of DIY A2E pearl acoustic kit for a pearl mimic...do you have any recommendations for which triggers/heads to buy? Prob just be the normal size shells like a 12/14/16/22
that snare sample sounds great. is this one of your crazy frankenstein inventions? also, my i ask how much for the trigger basket?
Thanks! Yeah, it's one of the snares I'm working on for the Famous: Metal pack. It was about £180ish (€208) for the basket from drum-tec but that's with VAT taken off which then needed paying once it got to the UK + customs fees. I bought a couple of extra items alongside it so not sure exactly how much of the total cost it came to, but I'd guess about around £230.
I was quoted about £350 for the trigger basket part from a "Roland approved service centre" four years ago when I looked into it, so it worked out cheaper getting it from drum-tec!
@@TheeDrumWorkshop thanks for the answer.ill be looking forward to that metal edition.
as you say- "cheers"
That shell... did you put the basket into an acoustic snare shell? That's my next project and I was wondering how it would work out.
The basket won't fit properly in either of the 14" acoustic shells that I've tried. One was a cheap metal snare shell and the other was a wooden one. The wooden shell is too thick and the rolled over bearing edge on the metal one prevented the basket from seating properly. I might have been able to force it down on the metal shell but I didn't want to. If you have a thin metal shell without a rolled bearing edge (so one that is similar to Roland's own shell) or something like that then there's a chance it will work out.
I wonder if this Roland head trigger basket is compatible with acoustic snare drums
It is not?
Does anyone know this for a fact? Can’t find one and want to do that
I was looking for the same thing and no one has one for sale.
Is there ANY way to add an analog output to the digital snare so it can also be used with the SPD-SX PRO?
I mean it can’t be impossible, but Roland really could have added this functionality.
I imagine if you completely rewire it, it can be done. Not sure there's much reason to do it unless it's the only pad available to you. It's probably easier to use a cheap analogue pad since the SPD-SX Pro doesn't have much in the way of expression.
what is pd140 shell thickness in the area where seat gasket? it has bearing edge ?
If I monitor the triggers for my used PD-140DS and toms I don't see a smooth increase of the midi value from center to edge, it goes from 0-50 to 127, making the zones impossible to set on SD3. Does it mean that I should change the sensors? It's not even available anymore on drumtech 😢
Trigger assembly!?!? So it's possible to convert a regular 14" acoustic snare into a digital one? Thanks!
I've not tried it in another shell properly yet. It doesn't appear to seat correctly in the one I placed it onto at the end of the video, so I think the shell might need to be a certain thickness or have a particular kind of edge. I need to investigate when I get the chance.
I’d love to see this as well. Can you link to where you found the replacement basket?
@@TheeDrumWorkshop Thanks for this fine video. The position sensoring on my Roland snare is not working 100% properly anymore. After removing the head I couldn't find any visual damage on the cones so I'm wondering what's going on. Would be great if somebody finds a cheap shell which fits thoses baskets and would let us know. Tried with different wood shells myself but without success. Thanks again!
Do you think it would fit on any 14" shell? I was wandering to by that replace part and assembling it on an acoustic 14" snare....
It doesn't appear to fit on any shell as I couldn't get it to comfortably fit on a metal shell I had. The Roland shell has no "flange" on the edge whereas the shell that I tried did, not sure if that was the only reason or if the Roland shell might be slightly under-sized. It might have gone on with a bit of force but I didn't want to break the plastic! I'd need to experiment a bit more.
where did u order the new trigger assembly from? Please let me know. I cannot get any sound into the PA from snare . all other drums work fine and the snare works fine thru the head phones. Can't get any support
I ordered it from drum-tec, as mentioned in the video. There's a link in the description. However, if you can hear the snare in the headphones but not the main outputs, that doesn't sound like a trigger issue, it sounds like an output routing problem.
What's the name of that trigger assembly I wasn't able to find it on drum tec

Some of the screwheads on that old set look rusty - has it been stored somewhere damp or is that to be expected?
Unfortunately my old house did indeed have a bit of a damp problem, so that might have done it. It also went on a lot of stages with smoke machines, though I'm not sure how much difference that makes.
(Mark Norton's trigger design + extra trigger) * Digi snare electronics in a 12" snare shell. My mind boggles
Shit. My digital snare plays cross-stick when trying to do a rim shot too. Not always. If I hit it hard it will give a rimshot sound.
Attenzione, i bordi dei fusti Roland sono fatti al contrario rispetto a quelli normali, ecco perché il nuovo pad non entra correttamente!!!!
There are settings that can be adjusted in the trigger menu that might help first! It was only once the settings no longer did anything that mine was a problem.
Have a look at
Trigger > Rim > Xstick Threshold
first. Then
Trigger > Digital > Advanced > Xstick Detect Sens
might also help.
If it's an issue that doesn't change, try checking the sensors and wiping them gently to remove dust. That totally solved the cross-stick issue for me, it's because I went poking around under the cones that I caused the head triggering problems.
@@TheeDrumWorkshop I'll check that out this evening at home, Luke. Thanks for your vids.
@@TheeDrumWorkshop What settings numbers do you use?
Do you think the replacement Basket Roland PD-140DS does fit an 14” acoustic shell?
For those that are curious, it worked fine 👍🏼 I’ll post a video soon
So you were able to convert a 14” acoustic shell to basically the high end $800 Roland digital snare using the replacement basket and triggers? I’m looking to do an A2E and this wouldn’t be too expensive to do if it worked
@@stanleyipkiss3806 yes I did! How do you want to do an E2A?
Super torn on how I’d want to approach it. Part of me wants to do a full A2E on my acoustic kit, and use this Roland trigger basket. But part of me wants to just buy a td27kv2 and use that as a base for a hybrid setup. Then I’d get the digital snare, hats and ride…I’d hate to go through all of the trouble and money on an A2E just to be disappointed in its performance.
@@bernovanderwal Which snare did you use?
Anyone transfer a PD-140DS pad assembly into a real shell?
I have just for the hell of it!
very nice pfp xd
