- The two main pads for Roland that are semi-kinda-affordable are the Roland PDX100 and the PD125BK. But what are the main differences? And why is one $210 and the other is $430? Really the only difference between them is that the PD125 is two inches larger, and it has a nicer wooden shell. The PDX100 actually has a slight advantage in one area, it has two mounting options built in. It has a thinner all plastic shell, that's why it costs less. I recomend buying these pads, they are VERY well made. Just get them used off ebay, forget about buying them new.

Hey Justin, I completely agree with you on buying used Roland gear -- it's so well made and holds up incredibly well. Over the years, I've purchased a total of 2 Roland kits, 3 modules and some add-on cymbals -- all used. I've never regretted any of those decisions and saved a ton of money along the way. You just have to be patient and wait for the great deals. One thing to check though when buying a used snare: the condition of the foam cone. We obviously hit the snare so many more times than any other drum and that foam cone can really suffer after enough years. That was the case when I bought a used PD125. I got it home and noticed that it wasn't as responsive as I expected. I opened it up and noticed that the cone was kind of mushy. No problem. Roland sent me a new cone for under $20, I peeled off the old one, stuck on the new one, and the drum was like new again.

I'm really happy with my PDX-100, especially since I have spare 3-ply prism heads. The gain and frequency response of the pickup, rim triggering and reliability are superior to my laurin mesh, Alesis, simmons etc.

Hi, Justin! Could make a video about how to get the best snare sound from a Roland (or any brand) module? I like my snare sound but it is to dry and even the ambience and effects can't help me with that problem! I want a big, deep snare but I can't get it!

I have a TD-25 with the PDX100. I was wondering what trigger settings do you recommend for the snare using this pad? I have tried several things (currently using Linear curve, threshold 2, sensitivity 4), but I feel like I am getting loud ghost notes, and adjusting sensitivity down just eliminates high-sounding hits. Is possible a new version of this video? PDX-12 (another rim, 12", etc) vs PDX100... PD128 n' PD125 with another module without positional sensing ¿? (TD17 module in my case per example). I'm looking the performance improvement for the snare if is necessary or if not. ¿?
great comparison video, Justin! I played on an Alesis strike pro the weekend, the first time i've properly had a go and i'm impressed with the quietness of mesh pads..i may be a convert!
the strike drums are awesome!! hihat sucks, cymbals ok, but there is no better snare pad than the strike!!

The other Tom mount option on the pdx100 is for a pearl arm mount.
I like the pdx100, it has a nice rebound. But it can be to bouncy indeed. To be very honest, the pdx8 and pdx10 pads are rather nice, onfurtenate the size is rather small.

hey, I have a TD-11 - to answer your question YES. the black rubber circle around the pad is also a trigger and you can customize this to ANY sound you want. Get familiar playing with the module settings and fiddling around with the wheel. start your module and the n hit menu. go to INST - in this area you can customize any pad - start with the basic settings first- don't be overwhelmed by all the advanced settings. whichever pad you hit, the module will switch to the settings for that drum. practice doing this and seeing how the settings come up. tap the pads edge - if an option to edit does not come up then this means the outer edge (black rubber) isn't "linked". if thats the case hit link and then the outer rim and now you can customize a sound to that pads rim. For example, on my tom I wanted a clap song - so the middle of the pad was a tom and I made the black rim a clap. I've also put tambourines here or sometimes if I need another crash cymbal I put one here too like a china or something. The PDX-100 has dual triggers on and part of it and inside the module you can set this up. hope that clears things up.....even though its a year later. happy drumming bud.
ALSO - Remember to go into settings - go to pad settings and double check to see if all your pads are linked up properly to the type of pad you own. Fox example - if you own a PDX-100 for your snare, make sure it says PDX-100 here and not some other model. name that isnt that pad thats plugged in there....and so on. this is vital important. I had issues with my kick drum for the longest time and it was all cause I had KD-8 in this setting when I in fact own a KD-9. I didn't get proper bass drum notes. You have to tel the module what pads you own..... If you don't know the model number of your pad you can look underneath on the bottom and it will say. this goes for all cymbals as well.

Way to go is to expand your TD30KV with the PDX100.
Question ...: Why would this "hotspoting" be an issue? It is EXACTLY what an acoustic drum would do especially a snare. Center louder a bit lower tone (unless you tighten that sucker to the point of snatching) and as you go closer to the rim the sound gives you a higher pitch and less volume. This is actually a great effect where you begin a flam near the rim and close a fill in the center.

You loose all dynamics at the center of the drum. It will trigger only the loudest sample, and becomes very annoying
No. Even roland is using side triggers on new snares. Hotspotting not like anything an acoustic drum does. I switched to a rt30hr rim trigger because I didnt like hotspotting.
I found a used PD-125 today under $200.
I never noticed these prices before because I don't own any Roland pads... it's pretty ridiculous that I can get a wood shell, mesh head pad from other manufacturers like Drum-Tec cheaper than I can get the "equivalent" Roland. A 12"x5" pad from Drum-Tec, which is basically a cheaper normal drum shell nicely fitted with sensors etc, comes in at 310€, while the Roland PD-128-BC costs 430€. In my experience, both react pretty much identically and the Drum-Tec shell definitely looks better.
So... I guess I have two questions:
a) Given the ridiculous prices, I'm sure there must be more companies doing the same thing as Drum-Tec. Do you know any?
b) Why do people buy Roland pads new? I get buying them used. They are sturdy and they work well, even though they're not pretty, IMO... but new?
a. there are other companies out there similiar to drum tec like Jobeky, diamond, but Drum Tec is the best right now
b. I've found that there are people that really don't have to worry about what things cost. Like. AT ALL. They just buy the best stuff and don't even flinch because they make alot of money.

That's the only reason why I'm still on my Yamaha. Roland is just too expensive. Not that I couldn't get me one, but I don't support that kind of customer milking 😪

Actually, the PDX100 has the same internal sensor components (metal platform, vibration isolation parts) as the top-of-the-line PDX128. So, the PDX100 has slightly better triggering than the PD125BK. Consider the PDX100 as state of the art. PD125BK is slightly older technology. I've owned them both, and actually converted my PD125's at one time to PD128's by using the advice on the VDrums forum. Triggering after the conversion was slightly better sensing shallow and deep rim shots.

The guts of the PDX100 are the same as the PDX128. So, the PDX100 triggering is slightly better than the PD125's, but not better than the PDX128. I didn't say that the "PDX100 > the other two", just the PD125 series because both the PDX100 and PDX128 share the same internal trigger components. Now, if size is important to you, the PDX128 is king. It's debatable if the PDX100 is better overall than the PD125 for your liking. I'm just pointing out that the trigger components in the PDX100 are Roland's state of the art and the PD125 is the previous generation. However the difference is subtle.
The 140, being larger diameter and heavier plays a bit more like an acoustic kick. However, my DIY acoustic conversion plays great and for a lot lest money.
What I've done for years: Get a KD-7 and put it behind a dummy acoustic kick drum. (18" for portability) It ticks ALL your boxes.
Why not just put one KD-7 on the floor in front of a dummy kick drum and another other on the left just next to your hi hat? Problem solved. They're cheap used on eBay.
Hey, 65 drums I'm getting an electronic drum kit for Christmas the td25kv is too pricey and the td11kv seems a little crappy and overpriced what Roland electronic drum set is good for beginners like me?

I'm confused as to why hot spotting is seen as a problem, when you hit an acoustic snare in the centre you get a louder, fuller sound, so in my mind, hotspotting just adds to a more realistic performance.
Because the volume increase you get from moving on to the hotspot (hitting directly on the triggercone) is unnatural; volume can spike from 80% -> 100% even if your hitting force stays the same.

don't know about PD125BK, but DONT BUY PDX100 !!!! I had 3 PDX100 that came with my new TD50 and they're so awful I had to sell them right away and replaced them with old pads from an old TD9. Yes, they're worst than toms from old basic e-drums. Roland engineers are so stupid they put the cone sensor right in the middle. How could they do something that dumb, I really don't know, but it ruins every rolls you'll make. gold standard of the e-drum? this guy is tripping. This is the worst product ever made by Roland. Everybody hates it, just type "hotspot PDX100" on google and see by yourself.
Thank You and 65 Drums did point out hot spot on both yet perfected the Roland 125 Black over the PDX-100, yes there is a trampoline effect I noticed on the PDX-100.
