The Two New York Islanders Players Most Likely To Be Traded Before the Deadline Are Both Struggling

- The New York Islanders have two 30-goal scorers from a year ago who are on expiring contracts and are very likely to be traded. That's Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri. Both are also slumping right now. Nelson has gone 17 games without lighting the lamp while Palms has 2 goals in his last 18 games. We discuss what this does to their market value and some other possible trade candidates that Lou Lamoriello could and probably should look to deal.
We also have the latest injury updates and roster moves as Simon Holmstrom .lands on IR while Hudson Fasching and Isaiah George will not make the two-game road trip to Vegas and Utah. The Islanders also called up Grant Hutton from Bridgeport.
And we have our weekly Farm Report on all things Bridgeport Islanders as the struggles on the farm continue.
All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

Doesn’t matter, we cannot watch them on cable.
It's very frustrating Matt, for sure. These millionaires fight with each other and the fans are left holding the bag. I hope it gets resolved soon. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Gil my question for you is this; why does everything have to point to Lou Lamarello? Why him?
Are you serious?
@@max2238yes because you saw the bad decisions he made. We are where we are cause of him.
If you look at the way this roster is put together, that's predominantly on Lou. Add some really bad contracts and NTCs and partial NTCs and you've got a GM who has not managed the cap well and keeps doubling down on the same aging group but won't free up cap space to make the necessary changes after they haven't won a playoff series in 3 years and counting. I like almost every player on the roster, but as a group, this core peaked 4 and 5 years ago and now it's time to retool but Lou keeps doubling down. I respect Lou and all he's accomplished, but he needs to recognize that it's time to break up the gang. Thanks for the comment, Christophercancel934. LGI.
Hey Gil, where do we even watch games now? Did they remove from cable for good? You could make a video on what a pain in the a** it is to figure out which channels their playing on each game if it’s even on cable or not that day. Not to mention if your in your car listening sometimes it’s on the radio sometimes not. It’s so frustrating just to watch or listen let alone delve into the team issues
Thanks for the comment, davids.5903. It is very frustrating that the fans can't easily watch the games. I hope the cable company works things out soon, but these negotiations tend to drag on. I will discuss it, it's not good. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri are on expiring contracts, and to add insult to injury, they're slumping. Nelson's exploring free agency. Palmieri is from Smithtown, which means he's under a lot of pressure to perform in front of the home folks. Will Lou Lamoriello set this in motion, WE WILL 👀. Keep Anders Lee, and maybe keep JG PAGEOU, maybe, especially with the Duke and Barzy back in the lineup. I'd love to see them out of the muddy middle. Hudson Fashing's day-to-day , and he won't be going with the team to Vegas an UT, and neither is Isiah George is long term. Mike Reilly is long-term, and Simon Holmstrom is day to day. Dennis Chulowski has a step to up and prove to Patrick Roy what he can do. Bridgeport is not doing that great. HAPPY 🎂, BRENT SOPEL. I'm happy he retired with a Stanley Cup. He had 2 assists in a win against those dreaded Rangers. Hear from you later, Gil, no nostalgia this time, a thought if Jaromir Jagr is still playing, the Islanders should try and land him lol. Now, LET'S GO, ISLANDERS.
It's a tough situation right now. I think they will still trade Brock and Palms. I hope the team can play better. Jagr has finally retired as a player. The Isles missed out on him. Thanks for the comment, Cindy and LGI.
@LockedOnIslanders You're right, BIG ⏲️. He had Gordie Howe's stamina. Hear from you tomorrow.
LET THE DISMANTLING BEGIN. Word is louzer's starting price for 29,21 is a first. A first for two dwindling assets? Start the bidding...
Totally agree! You must deal to make a better Future!!!!! Lou! You are not winning a Cup! Trade!!!!
It should only happen, Steven. Let's hope. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Spot on Otto. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
We need DEFENSE!!!!!!
Amen 🙏
Sadly, we need a lot of things. We'll see what the trade deadline brings. Thanks for the comment, jaktripz64. LGI.
@@LockedOnIslanders We need a defense before anymore second rate offensive players!! FR!
Good news for louzer. Isles have the top player on tdl list. The bad news is i wouldn't trust louzer to manuever this tdl properly. Isles have 3 on tsn tdl list. 29 at one, 21 at 13, and 44 at 16.
The good news is isles could come out of this tdl with much needed future assets. The bad news is louzer has 21, 29 declining in production and may have already waited too long to maximize their value. Should have done that in off-season. And who would trust louzer? Word is louzer could have moved 44 at tdl last season for a first and refused the deal. Could see louzer trade 29 for more bottom 6 garbage, keep 21 looking to re-sign him, and do nothing with 44. Doubtful 8 gets moved. 3 should be shopped by tdl, 24 as well yet have too much term left. 40 if healthy too. Mild/guerin still have 29 interest.
btw rip dwight foster. The kitchener ranger all team leading scorer was looked at as a d c in '77 draft. bow tie debated between foster and pure sniper 22 at 15 in that draft. Al said you can teach a player to play d, not to score goals. Bow tie took 22. Foster went next pick to b's.
A lot of moves are past due. I don't think Nelson and Palmieri's slumps will hurt their trade deadline value unless the slumps continue for another month. Yes, turning down a first rounder for Pageau was foolish, I doubt he'll get that in return again. There are a lot of guys who could and should be dealt at or before the deadline. Thanks for the comment, Steven. LGI.
Will be keeping an eye on the Nucks! Doing some scouting tonight in DC! Nucks Vs Caps … should be a good one
That is a good matchup. We'll see if any trade is made with the Isles. Thanks for the comment, Otto. LGI
Gil this is going to be a tough sell regarding Nelson, the Islanders will have to eat some of the contract for a trade. As an owner this is not what I want to hear. Eating a contract. That alone should get Lou released. I said this in November, time to trade all the players 30 and over., and now it very well may happen. Maybe have some spending money for a free agent like Mikko Rantanen and bring up Jefferies, Finley,, Dufour and Maggio come September. Also trade Ciz and do not re-sign Martin. Get trade picks for Nelson, Lee, Palm amd JG.
Change is desperately needed and lets hope it's coming. I don't mind retaining some salary on Brock if it means we don't have to add a pick in the trade. After all, the salary would literally just be for March and half of April. Do I like it? No, but it's doable. Not sure Dufour and Maggio are NHL players, but we'll see. Whatever the choices are, they need to have a younger, faster, more skilled lineup. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Good morning team! Gil, I guess struggling players is something that will always be around, and it goes from player to player. Too bad there isn't a vaccine for the scoring drought, haha. We know lots of changes are in store for the team. It's about time. On another note, I would love to see the team put up a good game against Vegas tomorrow night. I don't remember the last time we actually beat them, and I'm not too confident about this game either. Just looking for a good showing, and maybe a few lucky bounces of the puck. Everyone, have a great day today, and stay safe. See you all again tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!
Vegas is a tough team to beat. I think you'll notice the skill, size and speed of the team when we face them tomorrow. I hope the Isles bring their "A" game and give them a good fight. Thanks for the comment, Tony. LGI.
Morning Gil, I was the Jan 5th game. Oh boy, they were not mentally there. They played “good” hockey for the first 10 mins of the second period but before and after, just horrendous. I was telling my buddy who was working in the penalty box, they’re just not discipline.
The lack of consistency and effort shift to shift is very tough to take. Thanks for the comment, cigar88up. It's got to change. LGI.
Like you told me the other day. It's time to retool. LGI
Absolutely, Darrell. Now let's see if they do it. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
The defense is better this time of year. It's harder to score without structure and an identity.
For sure, ragehockey23. It's been a problem for a while. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Who's the #1draft prospect?
Jame Hagens of BC is the top rated prospect. Oh by the way, he's a Long Island native. Thanks for the comment, JohnSmith-ds1fm. LGI.
It would be sad to break up the boys but change is a fact of life. Coach Roy deserves to go get the horses he wants. Gil do you have any opportunity to interview the owners and find out when Lou can be replaced by a younger human? We need a culture change and a new identity and I think a new GM would be a breath of fresh air. It’s like our politicians why can’t Lou pass the torch can we implement term limits? Ha
We do need culture changes and a new GM mostly because Lou won't make the necessary changes. The owners generally don't make themselves available for interviews but if they were, I'd jump at the chance. I hope the necessary changes are coming soon. Thanks for the comment, christophermonelt2520. LGI.
Lee. You need to eat part of contract. Same with others. These are all great guys but they’re all heading into the sunset. Other teams would grab a lot of them to bolster a playoff run. If he leaves this group together a collapse is imminent
I don't mind eating a little contract with one year left on Lee's deal. The sad fact is, even when he's playing as well as he has this season, he's not worth the $7 million cap hit he's got. Thanks for the comment, MichaelSr-sp5pw. LGI.
Gm Gil. The smart move would be to do nothing until Lou is gone. This team is terrible and its time to accept their fate and ride this out.
They need to make some moves at the trade deadline. I know they probably won't move on from Lou midseason but they would lose players like Brock and Palms for nothing if they don't move them at the deadline. Thanks for the comment, Eric. LGI
@@LockedOnIslanders the overpayment in a trade and sign will be far worse than whatever value is left in both those players
Anyone claiming to know anything about what Lou and the Islanders are up to is a liar. The Islanders are tighter lipped than any organization in the world. They have a very hard working team and should be commended for that. But they have zero finish! Zero. They outplay team after team and lose. Because no one scores when they need it.
The lack of finishing ability is very frustrating. Yes, the Isles are very tight lipped, to the detriment of the fans in many instances. Let's see if they can add some finishing talent. Thanks for the comment, MichaelSr-sp5pw. LGI.
Comment on the money. Minor league is depleted. The prospects are coming. Pretty solid after their performances in the WJC. But it’s time to move on. New blood is sorely needed.
This is a big opportunity for the Isles to free up some cap space for sure. Palms earns $5 million per year, Nelson $6 million, Lee $7 million, Pageau $5 million. Thanks for the comment, MichaelSr-sp5pw. LGI
Get whatever you can for these guys and move on I'd rather see some kids called up they can't do any worse
Very true, JohnSmith-ds1fm. Now let's see them do it. Thanks for the comment and LGI
We need petey
Trade Dobson , Brock ( uFa) eiserman, and 2nd
Darinbitcoin you're giving up too much for Petterson, instead I propose senging Dobson, B Nelson, and AHL prospects Matt Maggio and Defour to Canucks for Petterson and Autu Ratu
@@cushiterevenge5696 Ratu's ship has sailed.
You’re absolutely insane… that 11 million dollar salary + 4 assets? Nope nope nope nope
Put the pipe down
Petterson is soft as butter. Miller is ready to strangle him he’s so soft and you want to trade half the assets for him?
