My question is this: the snippet we hear was broadcast on TV and recorded to a computer. Where does the tape hiss/analog aspect come from? Computers are digital, so there'd be no tape hiss. Would such a low fidelity version be broadcast on TV? (The tape hiss I refer to is heard in other videos about the song. As it presented here, it sounds like it's been cleaned up a bit.)
A while ago I was making these Preshows for my friends for movie nights, which included music videos, shorts, and commercials. I downloaded one bit of a commercial which had used this music. No idea what the channel was, or if it was the original audio. But yeah, didn't know it was this big
this for sure came from a commercial. but him being from spain i dont know how common that practice was over there since it to this day exists in japan to have well known artists make one off covers, songs for 15/30 second ad spots (the nescafe excella ads come to mind, songs were commissioned but never released in full and are technically lost media). if they use the mts format i would start searching there. but it wouldnt explain how this guy got that recording unless it is a spanish ad from the very very early 90s, then digitized in 2000. you have to keep in mind that post 95 the eurodance movement was in full swing and advertisers wouldnt be caught DEAD doing anything that sounded like the 80s new wave scene. that narrows the search down to at the latest the early 90s probably around 93 and earliest 84, since the sequencer for the drums was released that year. the other big possibility is this being an airing of a demo of an unsigned band on public access. as i cannot imagine any major label allowing an unreleased track be played in full on tv, and especially not from a major label artist UPDATE: did some research, the hum present in the vocaroo file pretty much confirms this was done in an ntsc country. so this brings the list of places down to, north & south america, the philipines, myanmar, taiwan, south korea and japan. all of europe is pal. so that strikes out the theory that this was recorded there.
It can't be from a commercial that didn't air because the op stated clearly that the song was recorded from an old VHS tape. You can't record commercials that don't air... In the tail end of the 80's, when the Mall Scene really exploded, it was common for high end malls to employ pop music artists to record songs for their commercials. If this isn't ARG, then I'd bet my bottom dollar that it was in fact from a commercial for a mall. It would be worth finding out where op resides, then search archives for commercials specifically from that area.
I don’t really understand why people are assuming by default that it’s for a commercial tho? like obviously it was some thing from TV but it could’ve just been part of something from an obscure made for tv movie/short lived tv show. Promo bumper for a channel station etc.
To me it sounds like it could have been for a pilot of a television show. In the 80s shows had catchy "hook" songs as intro. For example, Three's Company, Greatest American Hero, Littlest Hobo. If you search almost every show had a theme song. It alerted us to our show being on. If it were a show canceled soon after the pilot episode and particularly if it was aired in Japan as some theorize then only a Japanese person, over the age of 50, with excellent recall, who happened to see the pilot and who responds to English comments on the internet can solve the mystery.

I have a theory, maybe this song wasn’t supposed to be out, at least not now. I think maybe it could have been to a tv pilot, due to the lyrics making me think it could be for a tv show, maybe a teen show. Maybe it could even have been dumped online when the pilot wasn’t picked up. I mean I don’t think TV shows just get jingles for a pilot, but maybe the show got into production a little but before not being picked up or canceled. I mean I’d try seeing if any network stations have old pilots or unaired shows that could have it. And it could make sense why nobody heard it nor if an artist is unaware of it. The lyrics seem intentional, like to go along with a plot or a storyline.
My grandparents house have hundreds of cds, cassettes, and tapes of music, I think one day I might look in their basement specifically for this song, maybe…
To me the part where people think the singer says "Ulterior Motives" to me can also be heard as "A theory in/of motion". I don't know how significant they is, but considering we only have a 17 second clip of this song, every detail is significant.
Ok, so that TV tone appears on TONS of records. Appears a lot of studios had TV monitors running for whatever reason. So this doesn't mean the song was made for TV. And I think they're counting all the shapes in the sky, rather than sheep. As in the shapes that the clouds make.
I've been with the search since 2021, while I haven't been active with it. Its amazing how it just... suddenly gained a massive following and I'm all here for it, best of luck for those who go searching for it.
I think I know what happened to your version of Ulterior Motives. When the song got found, Christopher Saint and Philip wanted to release the song so they made everyone who already copyrighted it take theirs down so they could upload theirs.
I actually found out the reason recently, and believe it or not it was not that (as i was planning on taking it down paying for cover license and re-uploading) All is in order legally w/ re; to EKT. But it was a bizarre reason fo sure.
Also, the creator of this video fucked up the lyrics. Here are the actual lyrics: Something in your eyes makes me realize how strange it seems Something in your smile could be up on trial of broken dreams You're counting all your sheep in disguise Caught up in the world of lies Everyone knows it, you've got Ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it, ah-ha Don't you realize that you're telling lies? Ah-ha-ah-ha-ah If something's on your mind, spit it out and find the perfect scam All your truth and dares, do you really care just who I am? You're always biting more than you can chew When will you realize the truth? Everyone knows it, you've got Ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it, ah-ha I got it from the wise that you're telling lies Everyone knows it (knows it) You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it (shows it) That you've got ulterior motives, ah You're always biting more than you can chew When will you realize the truth? You're counting all your sheep in disguise Caught up in the world of lies Everyone knows it, you've got Ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it, ah-ha Don't you realize that you're telling lies? Everyone knows it (knows it) You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it (shows it) Don't you realize that you're telling lies? (Ooh) Everyone knows it (knows it) You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it (shows it) Don't you realize that you're telling lies? (Ooh) Everyone knows it (knows it) You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth Every move shows it (shows it) Don't you realize that you're telling lies?
I live in Ontario Canada, and the very first moment I heard this song I instantly knew I heard it in my youth. I know it wasn't a song on the radio or cassette tape, and I know it wasn't on a early computer game. I only had access to three channels growing up, and I'm convinced I heard it on television. I would say around 1988 And I hear "you're carried on a ship in the sky" I also hear scratchy sounds as if someone was using a recorder to record the song from something like a television and brushed against the mic
what if the lyrics are a methaphor on how this song is fake? you count sheep when you need to fall asleep (and perhaps dream), and the Internet itself is kinda "a world of lies", so maybe the ulterior motives are from carl92? (his motive was to get this song recognized, but what if he MADE the song? Then his "ulterior motive" for posting that would be to make the internet go crazy about it, wouldn't it?)
on the radio, i heard a quiz for who made the song or whats the title of the song. i heard a song that had a singer who sounded really close to everyone knows that. they said the song was in the musical the wedding singer
I have come to the belief that this never was a complete song. Just part of a jingle that was used in some sort of commercial. The singer was probably told to repeat these same lines over and over and it was added to some backing tracks. Not the answer we all want i know. I would love for their to be some sort of sci fi connection to this where somehow a portal to a alternate reality has allowed things like this to cross over into our world. Maybe connected to a earth where Ulterior Motives is a huge hit. But in reality what are the chances?
The singer sounds alot like Romeo void, though my mom says it could be a cover, she doesn't recognize those words. The obvious thing could be that it wasn't mainstream, which does make it harder.
If this was an actual Ad, how come nobody remembers hearing this in the 80s? to confirm this myth? I mean some should be able to tell that they heard this couple times back in the day. Just like i remember all the commercial music still they played in the TV from 2001 that are no longer accessible, however i can still recall them deep in my head to this exact day.
Saleen is pronounced "Say-Leen" by the way. And they weren't much of a standalone car brand. Their thing was essentially gutting Ford vehicles, tuning their engines and putting new bodies on. So I'm not 100% sure if they would have TV commercials since it's not like their products were widespread or sold in large numbers.
Saleen is named after Steve Saleen the founder, who pronounces it "suh-leen", he's prounounced it this way himself in interviews. I've heard Brits pronounce it "say-leen" before tho. Agree with you that this song is almost certainly not from a Saleen commercial.
i showed this to my mom and she said it sounded similar to the song girls on film, like it was sampled or something. Idk if that helps or anything, but thats what my mom said (my mom was way into music in the 80s/90s so I often ask her help in identifying older songs)
I don’t know how people thinks it’s a Japanese artist, the singer sounds british that why I think it’s boy George, he sounds just like this and this fits his vibe.
They think the only accents are non-native, and the all Asians and only Asians are foreigners + Japan is the only Asian country they know because cartoons.
I love how everyone's sitting here asserting their pet theories, no matter how debunked (Roxette) or racist ("sounds foreign, so must be Japanese because only Asians can be foreign") as utter truth.

A while ago I was making these Preshows for my friends for movie nights, which included music videos, shorts, and commercials. I downloaded one bit of a commercial which had used this music. No idea what the channel was, or if it was the original audio. But yeah, didn't know it was this big
is there anything left?
Do you still have the clip?
this for sure came from a commercial. but him being from spain i dont know how common that practice was over there since it to this day exists in japan to have well known artists make one off covers, songs for 15/30 second ad spots (the nescafe excella ads come to mind, songs were commissioned but never released in full and are technically lost media). if they use the mts format i would start searching there. but it wouldnt explain how this guy got that recording unless it is a spanish ad from the very very early 90s, then digitized in 2000. you have to keep in mind that post 95 the eurodance movement was in full swing and advertisers wouldnt be caught DEAD doing anything that sounded like the 80s new wave scene. that narrows the search down to at the latest the early 90s probably around 93 and earliest 84, since the sequencer for the drums was released that year.
the other big possibility is this being an airing of a demo of an unsigned band on public access. as i cannot imagine any major label allowing an unreleased track be played in full on tv, and especially not from a major label artist
UPDATE: did some research, the hum present in the vocaroo file pretty much confirms this was done in an ntsc country. so this brings the list of places down to, north & south america, the philipines, myanmar, taiwan, south korea and japan. all of europe is pal. so that strikes out the theory that this was recorded there.
It's been found. Was not quite for a commercial...
Turns out it was from a film
I think the relevance of the pilot tone in the song is that the OP recorded it off their TV
Not only is it mysterious, but it geniunely hits hard for some reason
To me it sounds like a song that would be played in a movie when there's a disco scene
Maybe it is? Was disco still going in 1986?
@@pastpatour 1986, Angels of passion NSFW Movie
This would be an amazing marketing strategy for an indie artist
I feel like this is from another universe and we were never supposed to hear it
I JUST WANT TO LISTEN TO THE FULL THING ITS SO GOOD!!!! 😭😭😭😭
SO REAL!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Or maybe the rest of the song sucks.
Has anyone tried the song "Everyone Knows" by Vivian Johaneson? I can't find it anywhere, but if anyone has it it could be worth a try.
Am I the only one that hears "you're counting on a shift in the skies" because that makes way more sense
I think it's you're caught on a shift of disguise
*“LIKE THE WIND” - lyrics*
[Verse 1]
Like the wind
You came here runnin'
Take the consequence of livin'
There's no space
There's no tomorrow
There's no sense communication
[Chorus]
Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine
A long dirty way in the subways of your mind
[Verse 2]
Like the wind
You're goin' somewhere
Let a smile be your companion
There's no place
And there's no sorrow
In a young and restless dreamer

Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine
A long dirty way in the subways of your mind

Now that Fond my mind isn't a Lost Media anymore, this should be the 2nd most mysterious song in the net!
This is driving me crazy I feel like I've heard this song somewhere in like GTA vc or some movie set in the 80s
Weird to think that the full cassette/cd that it came from is probably just sitting in somebodies garage in storage
Even weirder when that same cassette tape is also the same song from an adult movie.
My grandparents house have hundreds of cds, cassettes, and tapes of music, I think one day I might look in their basement specifically for this song, maybe…
do it then tapes have a certin life
they found it! From... Interesting place.... called corn, but with p
It was found! You should upload the updated video.
To me the part where people think the singer says "Ulterior Motives" to me can also be heard as "A theory in/of motion". I don't know how significant they is, but considering we only have a 17 second clip of this song, every detail is significant.
Saleen has already been contacted and ruled out! [I was the one that brought attention to that thread initially so sorry]
1. Thank you for clarifying
2. There are so many original legends from this story showing up in the comments I feel humbled.
Ok, so that TV tone appears on TONS of records. Appears a lot of studios had TV monitors running for whatever reason. So this doesn't mean the song was made for TV.
And I think they're counting all the shapes in the sky, rather than sheep. As in the shapes that the clouds make.
So i got some news bucko
Pretty great summary about this cool mysterious song. 👍😁👌
I've been with the search since 2021, while I haven't been active with it. Its amazing how it just... suddenly gained a massive following and I'm all here for it, best of luck for those who go searching for it.
4:49 i think people are abusing the copyright system again
I think I know what happened to your version of Ulterior Motives. When the song got found, Christopher Saint and Philip wanted to release the song so they made everyone who already copyrighted it take theirs down so they could upload theirs.
I actually found out the reason recently, and believe it or not it was not that (as i was planning on taking it down paying for cover license and re-uploading) All is in order legally w/ re; to EKT. But it was a bizarre reason fo sure.
Great video man!
Thank you so much for releasing this video ever though so many this went wrong!
not this video being an advertisement for his song 💀💀
🤫
Also, the creator of this video fucked up the lyrics. Here are the actual lyrics:
Something in your eyes makes me realize how strange it seems
Something in your smile could be up on trial of broken dreams
You're counting all your sheep in disguise
Caught up in the world of lies
Everyone knows it, you've got
Ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it, ah-ha
Don't you realize that you're telling lies?
Ah-ha-ah-ha-ah
If something's on your mind, spit it out and find the perfect scam
All your truth and dares, do you really care just who I am?
You're always biting more than you can chew
When will you realize the truth?
Everyone knows it, you've got
Ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it, ah-ha
I got it from the wise that you're telling lies
Everyone knows it (knows it)
You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it (shows it)
That you've got ulterior motives, ah
You're always biting more than you can chew
When will you realize the truth?
You're counting all your sheep in disguise
Caught up in the world of lies
Everyone knows it, you've got
Ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it, ah-ha
Don't you realize that you're telling lies?
Everyone knows it (knows it)
You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it (shows it)
Don't you realize that you're telling lies? (Ooh)
Everyone knows it (knows it)
You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it (shows it)
Don't you realize that you're telling lies? (Ooh)
Everyone knows it (knows it)
You've got ulterior motives, tell me the truth
Every move shows it (shows it)
Don't you realize that you're telling lies?
If only he knew...
It’s ironic because no one knows that song
I'm actually friends with Ani through Discord. They usually upload Vocaloid lost media now
Some where in the deepest depths of the internet is a song
I live in Ontario Canada, and the very first moment I heard this song I instantly knew I heard it in my youth.
I know it wasn't a song on the radio or cassette tape, and I know it wasn't on a early computer game.
I only had access to three channels growing up, and I'm convinced I heard it on television.
I would say around 1988
And I hear "you're carried on a ship in the sky"
I also hear scratchy sounds as if someone was using a recorder to record the song from something like a television and brushed against the mic
What were those three channels called
My goofy ahh pfp with the fake proposal from 42 days ago 1:32 💀
Wait which one are you? 😆
The MrCalypso dude
@@incredibletoyreviews oh no way! A main player in the story! Welcome!
This image that comes with the music seems like a liminal space, I'm sure I've been somewhere like that in my childhood.
I was dying of laughter by the time the third piece of evidence you mentioned disappeared off the internet LOL
I just saw this was uploaded!! I can’t wait to watch it!!!!
what if the lyrics are a methaphor on how this song is fake?
you count sheep when you need to fall asleep (and perhaps dream), and the Internet itself is kinda "a world of lies", so maybe the ulterior motives are from carl92? (his motive was to get this song recognized, but what if he MADE the song? Then his "ulterior motive" for posting that would be to make the internet go crazy about it, wouldn't it?)
I love the sound of this song, the mystery of it is so eerie I love it!! (Edit) if this is an arg I won’t be happy at all
on the radio, i heard a quiz for who made the song or whats the title of the song. i heard a song that had a singer who sounded really close to everyone knows that. they said the song was in the musical the wedding singer
it was part of the soundtrack i think
I love this song so much, i hope it gets found!
I guess it's some royalty-free music
In a sense, at the current moment, you are not wrong.
4:42 the pink jukebox isnt this "ani's" work, its from an ayesha erotica ep
I have come to the belief that this never was a complete song. Just part of a jingle that was used in some sort of commercial. The singer was probably told to repeat these same lines over and over and it was added to some backing tracks. Not the answer we all want i know. I would love for their to be some sort of sci fi connection to this where somehow a portal to a alternate reality has allowed things like this to cross over into our world. Maybe connected to a earth where Ulterior Motives is a huge hit. But in reality what are the chances?
Apparently they found it yesterday
I guess I’ll be adding your song to my Apple Music playlist
It’s a banger btw 👍👍👍
Thank you SO MUCH 🙏🏻
The singer sounds alot like Romeo void, though my mom says it could be a cover, she doesn't recognize those words. The obvious thing could be that it wasn't mainstream, which does make it harder.
The editing of this video is 🔥🔥
Why do I keep seeing you whereever I go
Will you make a video on Under the Stars (Cancion de Alicia)?
Next on the agenda, currently working on it now 😃
Late night exercise was pretty spot on
In the middle of Shiny Happy People the song is gonna sound a bit like the music but not like the lyrics.
it’s from an alternate universe and it accidentally slipped into our reality there problem solved
Well now that it's been found, theirs a reason why nobody from the 80s talks about it😂😂
I think it could be a song from GTA radio
Such a good theory!
If it was, then the search of the song would have been a 100 times easier.
There's always an artist behind so
"Everyone Knows That/Ulterior Motives" was found to be a demo for "Good Karma" by Roxette
Great, is there some post about it?
that’s just a theory, wasn’t proven
@@mariuspoppFMit’s just a theory
Claims without evidence are bullshit.
Agree with you that this song is almost certainly not from a Saleen commercial.
i hope it gets discovered. i love this song, and i have been into the mystery for a while.
Really hope this song gets found. Such a banger 🔥
i showed this to my mom and she said it sounded similar to the song girls on film, like it was sampled or something. Idk if that helps or anything, but thats what my mom said (my mom was way into music in the 80s/90s so I often ask her help in identifying older songs)
It's got a Human League, Limahl, Kajagoogoo vide, wonder if was just a demo?
Everyone knows that my brain is completely empty!!!!!
I don’t know how people thinks it’s a Japanese artist, the singer sounds british that why I think it’s boy George, he sounds just like this and this fits his vibe.
Of Course You’d Think It Was A Japanese Artist.
i’m saying!! sounds just like boy george
They think the only accents are non-native, and the all Asians and only Asians are foreigners + Japan is the only Asian country they know because cartoons.
Could you imagine if it’s like some Scientology promo video 😂
This song loves rent free in my head.
I love how everyone's sitting here asserting their pet theories, no matter how debunked (Roxette) or racist ("sounds foreign, so must be Japanese because only Asians can be foreign") as utter truth.
