Fun fact: for some reason European storm petrels have been wanted and decided to be named as "merikeiju" (a sea fairy) in Finnish. However, there has been a popular folk theory and myth that the person who gave the European storm petrels their Finnish name was tired of the claim that fairies don't exist.
Kilowattrel quickly rose to become my favourite regional bird Pokemon. Frigate Birds are cool as heck, so I was very happy to finally see one in Pokemon, especially with Electric being among my top 5 favourite types. The design might be a bit basic, but when you start off with a cool-ass bird like the frigate bird, you'd be hard-pressed to improve it without going overboard. I think the only thing I'd do to add onto it would be to add something more to its head, like extra feathers or such to call back to the pirate inspirations and their ostentatious hats.
I already fell in love with Kilowattrel upon revealed, yet this affirmed my appreciation. I enjoy the connections made to the skullduggery of frigatebirds to pirates and Spanish explorers (a.k.a. conquerers), along with the associations that storm petrels have to thunderstorms and thus to Wattrel, along with how both birds are known for long-distance travels across the oceans. Interesting that the Spanish were the first to coin the nickname "pirate bird". I do enjoy that you pointed out the genetic differences separating frigatebirds and petrels too. Certainly informative in how differently they respond to water. (At least it makes more sense than a remora into an octopus.) If and when I start a "Scarlet" file, I'll certainly make use of a Kilowattrel. :)
Hey thanks for featuring my art in your video (I'm insolentboi from DA)! So glad to see people are learning about obscure bird species via pokemon; I love frigatebirds myself which is where the idea for that drawing even came from
I love Kilowattrel, it's my second favorite Pokemon of generation IX (so far, because there will be new Pokemon in ScaVi DLC and maybe in the next Legends game) behind only the Cetitan
Actually we could count Wingull as a regional bird for Hoenn, it evolves at a similar level to tailow, its line used to have the same BST as the Tailow-line and it is actually catcheable in more locations and in earlier locations than Tailow.
I love these birds more and more with each passing day. I wasn't sure at first, but they've grown on me. The only thing I don't dig is the shiny. So minimal. Electric-types get it rough when it comes to shinies. Still, my favorite regional bird will probably always be Korviknight.
Kilowattrel is one of my favourite Gen9 pokemons! It looks awesome and even if a bit one-note, the move set is powerful. Stats make it perfect for a casual playthrough sweeper
Kilowattrel being a pirate is really cool. And the visual characteristics that it has to a pirate flag really match up. Also, really cool that this pokemon expert knows about One Piece and Devil fruits, really chad of a person.
If lockstin ever makes a Capsakid and scorvillain video (my favourite paldean pokemon), here's a few tips from what I researched! This is less of a "they need to add this!" And more "hey, heres a few tips": -like grafaiai, Capsakid and scorvillain aren't native to paldea. Pepper plants are native to Mexico, buut... -spain and Mexico have a history of "trading", leading to Spain acquiring spices and peppers, while Mexico lost a culture! -plague doctors actually used those same peppers and spices in their masks, which warded off miasma (in alchemy, miasma is toxic gas) -capsakid's flower is not only a pepper flower, but a sun hat!(like the main character's) -Scorvillain's two faces are based on Greek masks, which used exaggerated features to appear more recognisable. This also let actor's play many roles in a play, like how scorvillain plays a happy and sad character!
Kilowattrel is in my team simply based on its design and because it's based on a Frigatebird. It helped that it has some pretty good moves, I did have to spend some time team balancing to get it in there but the moment I saw it I knew it was going to be on my team. It is also huge compared to most other birds in the game.
Here in Hawaiʻi, we often see frigate birds cruising near shore whenever there's a storm system nearby. If you see a bunch of them flying above the beach and up towards the mountains, then you know there's some wild weather not too far away. That's why I figured Wattrel evolves into Kilowattrel: it's less about how they're related according to the evolutionary tree, but more to do with how they show themselves to humans on stormy days.
It blows my mind for how much research you do for these. I saw a Shiny Kilowatterl once. I tried to catch it but an Alomamola got in the way. It flew out to sea. Not to push an idea, but I look forward to if you do a video on Tatsugiri, and Dondozo. That might be a fun connection.
birds nest tastes really like nothing, maybe a small bit eggy but it's not really salty or savoury; ive had it before with coconut milk and goji berries and that tastes the best
"When you're a true pirate, nowhere is your home and everywhere is your home at the same time!" But not Spain though, pirates hated Spain and Spain hated pirates, they often were into killing Spanish people. A good reason for pirate Kilowattrel to be here. If you wonder why this mutual hatred: Pirates of piracy's Golden Age were between Europe and America, when the new continent was the Spanish (and Portuguese) territory and their main exportation was gold and silver. So we had Spanish ships filled with money that categorically refused anyone to approach America because the Pope said that the money was theirs. So, the other maritime powers of Europe, mainly France and England and also the Netherlands, hired privateers and the people in colonies of the West Indies say they wanna become pirates. And so all these people sack the galions, take the gold, and go. (You see what I did there? 👀) But don't worry for the Spanish, despite the pirates and privateers, Spanish still managed to bring back the money. So much gold and silver than Spanish inflation blew up, leading to their fall as one of the greatest powers of Europe for the rest of current history. :^D
@@ggrarl, nah, I though more of actual pirates and Spanish. For some famous examples: - Frederick Barbarossa fought Charles Quint, emperor of Romans and king of Spain. - Sir Francis Drake, "El Dragon". A national hero of England, ennobled by Elizabeth I as he helped his nation to win against Spain's Invincible Armada - Daniel Montbars, "the Exterminator". I'll let you guess what he exterminated. - Sir Henry Morgan, "El Pirato que dide mucho torturacio- I'm kindding, he lacked a nickname for once. This privateer was literally a pirate only for the Spanish. He just did a lot of zeal. To a point at which Jamaica's governor was embarassed, he asked him to go to Cuba to take informations from the Spanish but Morgan instead ravaged two towns. He took advantage of the war between England and Spain to listen to his cruelty and blood lust. - François l'Olonnais, "Flail of the Spaniards". He is known to made prisoners for two reasons, either to get informations from them or to kill them, sometimes he just wanted to kill Spanish thus lining some up to decapitate them one by one with his saber. He was once washed up in Yucatan, all of his crew was slain by the Spanish here but him, playing dead, covered by the blood and bodies of his dead crew. He run away and came back, decapitating all those Spanish but one, sending them to Havane's governor, tail between his legs, to tell the carnage. Another time, during the taking of Maracaibo, a village of 4,000 inhabitants, l'Olonnais threatened them to burn them or tear their eyes off if they don't say where is their gold.

I fell in love with wattrel when i found it outside the electric gym town and it was exactly what i needed on my team for coverage since i didnt have a way to deal with flying types. Then it evolved right when i thought it wasnt dealing enough damage and i just thought "holy crap thats a big birb!"
Kilowattrel is my 3rd favorite pokemon from gen 9, behind Maushold and Palafin. Electric/ Flying is such a cool typing on any mon, and I love its abilities. Volt absorb is amazing in a casual playthrough and Competitive is incredible for online battles. What a phenomenally designed pokemon!!!!
Fun facts: bones are piezoelectric, so stress put on a bone can create electrical pulses. Also, the eye scars of this line could be based on lichtenberg figures. Basically when lightning hits a person, if the path is near the outer layers of the skin, the electric current will etch its way through the flesh and create a scar based on the path the current took
Wattral was my first shiny of gen 9 Like it’s my first time seeing that pokemon I accidentally ran into it And it’s now thrud with the giant mark in a great ball I use it all the time in competive
I've been confused for the longest time about people calling them Paldea's regional birds. Mostly because I'm so used to getting these birds on the first or second route of the game, and not at... level 25 on a random coast. You don't even meet Wattrel on the first beach areas (where you meet your Raidon for example, or that other place where you follow a river after the lighthouse and get on a small beach with Wigletts). If they're really meant to be THE region's bird... why aren't they available in early game in those places?
Because open world screwed up the early route thing. So, you have to determine the regional bird by which flying type bird Pokemon best matches past trends of regional birds and only the Wattrel line matches.
Unironically Kilowattrel is probably one of my favorite Pokemon from this gen. I ended up using it in ALL by playthroughs because it's just so handy. It is an ideal in-game 'mon. I tried using other Electric and Flying Pokemon and none of them were as convenient to use as Kilowattrel. 10/10 basic Pokemon.
One of their inspiration based of their new talent being Wind Turbine makes me think they also have like elements of Wind Turbine. Especially those parks you can see on protected shores or waters not so far out. Also It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks that they lack something, maybe some more piracy idea or maybe another evolution because this gen gave out a LOT of one stage evolution ? To me they look like they are wearing full body swimming/surfer suits with the slick black latex stuff with hints of yellow. And there was that one famous comedy French movie called Brice de Nice with like a surfer dude who couldn’t use its surf board and it’s color palette is Kilowattrel but inverted(Yellow with hints of black) Last thing, funny how they have a regional bird having design elements that ressemble the ideas of the legendary of this gen being goofy poofy sacks, I wonder if Kilowattrel could have had ideas of its pouch being a fake wheel that stays afloat on top of water/sky. Would have it been too goofy for some kind of Unicycle to live like that ? Exactly, but it’s funny.
XD You Helix son of a JInx you actually snuck in a Twitch Plays Pokémon ref there and it was PERFECT! I do have to add I actually had seen a Frigate Bird before but in Final Fantasy Tactics! One of the more annoying enemies if you had no ranged spells or weapons because their movement squares could literally hit any height and almost the whole of the map. I never knew they were a real bird though. Incredible!
Another connection! My brother's gf is from Venezuala, and she pointed out that these pokemon almost look exactly like troupials. The Venezuelan Troupial has almost the EXACT same black and yellow color scheme, and of course being from venezuala adds the connection to spain and thus Paldea. The habitat range for these troupials also borders Lake Maracaibo. The place thats deemed the most electrified place on earth, seeing more lightning strikes and thunderstorms than anywhere else! Pretty cool seeing these simularities as well attached to these pokemon
When I first laid eyes of the Wattrel line I didn’t think much of it. But after having it on my team it has become my 2nd favorite electric type of all time
Holy, when I saw Wattrel and Kilowattrel for the first time, somehow I knew that there's more than meets the eyes on them, but this is freakin cool! You just made me love these birds even more! Amazing vid.
Also, both Spain and Portugal were targets of pirates and corsairs (mostly brits and dutch ones) making a PIRATE bird in the game kind of a no-brainer. Man, I love this line, but I couldn't use them, I found a shiny Flamigo in my playthrough
I'm late but it's funny how Lockstin made a video focused solely on Wattrel and Kilowattrel the day after I caught a shiny Wattrel. I'm not kidding, I even have a video of it.
I had one of these on my team when I first played through Scarlet, so it's one of my favorites from this region. I had no idea about the whole pirate thing though, it gets even more major bonus points from me for that.
Another cool detail that fits into its theme of piracy is its typing. Its super effective against every other regional bird thanks to its Electric/Flying typing, and can bully them into giving it what it wants.
BIRD JESUS?! that’s probably one of my favorite hyperspecific references that a lot of people probably don’t catch on to. the best part is, idk if it was intentional or not XD
A better excuse for the electric type for them could have been like monster hunter's astolos, the constant movement builds up electricity, ready to be used
Personally I love Kilowattrel. I added Wattrel to my team to evolve it for the dex, but then it stayed for the rest of the game. I love the design and it's very fun to use
A lot of people call their designs boring I don’t get that The black and yellow looks awesome and the spiky patterns are unique The pirate inspiration is really unique Also plain = gray or brown Black and yellow = distinct
I love wattrel and kilowattrel! They're my favorite bird pokemon now cause they're really cute. And the one I raised was the most useful mon on my team.

Ik like wtf
...
Nothing new here
I thought I was on the wrong website for a sec.
Come on guys, this is Lockstin we're talking about
"They put their distain for humanity aside for a second to survive"
Me going outside
I think lockstin might love kilowattrel a little too much though
Hey thanks for featuring my art in your video (I'm insolentboi from DA)! So glad to see people are learning about obscure bird species via pokemon; I love frigatebirds myself which is where the idea for that drawing even came from
I love Kilowattrel, it's my second favorite Pokemon of generation IX (so far, because there will be new Pokemon in ScaVi DLC and maybe in the next Legends game) behind only the Cetitan
Killowattrel generating electricity by flying reminds me of those ideas for wind generators suspended from kites
Ngl I did not see at first the pirate connection, and honestly it makes me love it even more.
The explosion on the weird neck sac, got a pretty good genuine laugh outta me lol
Actually we could count Wingull as a regional bird for Hoenn, it evolves at a similar level to tailow, its line used to have the same BST as the Tailow-line and it is actually catcheable in more locations and in earlier locations than Tailow.
Hearing Lockstin say "it all comes together" really takes me back.
I love these birds more and more with each passing day. I wasn't sure at first, but they've grown on me. The only thing I don't dig is the shiny. So minimal. Electric-types get it rough when it comes to shinies. Still, my favorite regional bird will probably always be Korviknight.
Corviknight, talonflame, staraptor and killowatrell are all amazing choices for regional birds!
Keep doing what you doing Lockstin the team of editors etc should also keep doing what they are doing
Lockstin: Give back the taser, wattrell, you are so grounded
Me: I 'm pretty sure you can't ground flying type🤣
I did not have bird assets on my bingo list for today.
This video truly has one of the thumbnails ever
9:49 the second benefit is the best...
Are we not gonna talk about how this line is the first regional bird since tailow and swellow to be two stage
17:14 I'm pretty sure lots of rum would make you Fregatidae more than general piracy would. And _that's_ why the rum is always gone.
If lockstin ever makes a Capsakid and scorvillain video (my favourite paldean pokemon), here's a few tips from what I researched! This is less of a "they need to add this!" And more "hey, heres a few tips":
-like grafaiai, Capsakid and scorvillain aren't native to paldea. Pepper plants are native to Mexico, buut...
-spain and Mexico have a history of "trading", leading to Spain acquiring spices and peppers, while Mexico lost a culture!
-plague doctors actually used those same peppers and spices in their masks, which warded off miasma (in alchemy, miasma is toxic gas)
-capsakid's flower is not only a pepper flower, but a sun hat!(like the main character's)
-Scorvillain's two faces are based on Greek masks, which used exaggerated features to appear more recognisable. This also let actor's play many roles in a play, like how scorvillain plays a happy and sad character!
The pirate connection is cool, definitely gonna add one next play through, and definitely gonna name him Kaido. If you know you know.
Enel will fit better
Kilowattrel is in my team simply based on its design and because it's based on a Frigatebird. It helped that it has some pretty good moves, I did have to spend some time team balancing to get it in there but the moment I saw it I knew it was going to be on my team. It is also huge compared to most other birds in the game.
That explains their wind power ability as well, since they act similar to little windmills basically
6:33
"I can't think of any animal more deserving of the electric type"
Electric Eels: "Am I a joke to you?"
This made me apreaciate wattrel and kilowattrel a lot more.
Kilowattrel is based on my favorite IRL bird. I squealed when I saw one on the coast for the first time.
1:42 Australian wildlife truly is something else though.
When I first saw Kilowattle I thought it was based off a Ratle, another type of bird, but this makes alot more sense
"When you're a true pirate, nowhere is your home and everywhere is your home at the same time!" But not Spain though, pirates hated Spain and Spain hated pirates, they often were into killing Spanish people. A good reason for pirate Kilowattrel to be here.
If you wonder why this mutual hatred:
Pirates of piracy's Golden Age were between Europe and America, when the new continent was the Spanish (and Portuguese) territory and their main exportation was gold and silver.
But don't worry for the Spanish, despite the pirates and privateers, Spanish still managed to bring back the money. So much gold and silver than Spanish inflation blew up, leading to their fall as one of the greatest powers of Europe for the rest of current history. :^D
Like that Capitán Salazar "El Matador del Mar" from the 5th Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He hated all pirates, but especially Jack Sparrow.
@@ggrarl, nah, I though more of actual pirates and Spanish. For some famous examples:
- Frederick Barbarossa fought Charles Quint, emperor of Romans and king of Spain.
- Sir Francis Drake, "El Dragon".
A national hero of England, ennobled by Elizabeth I as he helped his nation to win against Spain's Invincible Armada
- Daniel Montbars, "the Exterminator".
@@victzegopterix2 "Now take Sir Francis Drake. The Spanish they despised him. But to the British, he's a hero, and they idolize him."
So many real pirates that inspired One Piece characters.
@@ggrarl, with the ones I cited: Francis Drake inspired X Drake, Henry Morgan inspired Morgan, and l'Olonnais even inspired Zoro.
That thumbnail is insane 😂😂
I fell in love with wattrel when i found it outside the electric gym town and it was exactly what i needed on my team for coverage since i didnt have a way to deal with flying types. Then it evolved right when i thought it wasnt dealing enough damage and i just thought "holy crap thats a big birb!"
Ah yes! Lockstin doing his part to help the glory of Team Sky!
He is defenetely from Team Sky
Glad I caught a new video
I cant express how much
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS
A headcanon i have is that the normal animal name like: rat puddle etc. Are their scientific names like: lion leo tiger tigres etc.
Honestly, the moment I saw Kilowattrel it immediately shot up to my top 3 Regional Birds, taking second place right behind Corviknight.
1:13 but Wurmple is PURE Bug! 🥲
Wattral was my first shiny of gen 9
Like it’s my first time seeing that pokemon I accidentally ran into it
And it’s now thrud with the giant mark in a great ball
I use it all the time in competive
I saw the thumbnail and immediately thought "I'd like to slap those...
on the barbeque."
Mooooom, Lockstin is commissioning Pokemon hentai for his thumbnails again.
Genuinely shocked there aren't more comments talking bout that thumbnail, daymn
One of their inspiration based of their new talent being Wind Turbine makes me think they also have like elements of Wind Turbine. Especially those parks you can see on protected shores or waters not so far out.
Also It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks that they lack something, maybe some more piracy idea or maybe another evolution because this gen gave out a LOT of one stage evolution ?
To me they look like they are wearing full body swimming/surfer suits with the slick black latex stuff with hints of yellow.
And there was that one famous comedy French movie called Brice de Nice with like a surfer dude who couldn’t use its surf board and it’s color palette is Kilowattrel but inverted(Yellow with hints of black)
Last thing, funny how they have a regional bird having design elements that ressemble the ideas of the legendary of this gen being goofy poofy sacks, I wonder if Kilowattrel could have had ideas of its pouch being a fake wheel that stays afloat on top of water/sky.
Incredible!
I like how there's a bird that used to be called Peter
Another connection! My brother's gf is from Venezuala, and she pointed out that these pokemon almost look exactly like troupials. The Venezuelan Troupial has almost the EXACT same black and yellow color scheme, and of course being from venezuala adds the connection to spain and thus Paldea.
The habitat range for these troupials also borders Lake Maracaibo. The place thats deemed the most electrified place on earth, seeing more lightning strikes and thunderstorms than anywhere else! Pretty cool seeing these simularities as well attached to these pokemon
It sounds like there should've been a middle evolution
When I first laid eyes of the Wattrel line I didn’t think much of it. But after having it on my team it has become my 2nd favorite electric type of all time
Holy, when I saw Wattrel and Kilowattrel for the first time, somehow I knew that there's more than meets the eyes on them, but this is freakin cool! You just made me love these birds even more! Amazing vid.
Also, both Spain and Portugal were targets of pirates and corsairs (mostly brits and dutch ones) making a PIRATE bird in the game kind of a no-brainer. Man, I love this line, but I couldn't use them, I found a shiny Flamigo in my playthrough
you overdid it this time with the thumbnail lmao
8:34 That face of abject horror and disgust had me dying laughing! Love your stuff Lockstin and Gnoggin keep up the good work!
*LOCKSTIN? WE GOOD?*
I'm late but it's funny how Lockstin made a video focused solely on Wattrel and Kilowattrel the day after I caught a shiny Wattrel. I'm not kidding, I even have a video of it.
Frigatebirds are also called Frigate-petrels! Making Wattrel to Kilowattrel make sense
I had one of these on my team when I first played through Scarlet, so it's one of my favorites from this region. I had no idea about the whole pirate thing though, it gets even more major bonus points from me for that.
Kilowattrel is one of my top mons and you can’t change my mind
"and they're a popular delicacy."
on that day, Lockstin received a grim reminder...
Finally a Paldea video! Annihilape pls
This pokemon, when I first saw, I thought it was a crossbreed between Zapdos and Swellow
Watching these videos, I always wonder if Pokémon themselves did half as much research for these Pokémon as Lockstin does
Another cool detail that fits into its theme of piracy is its typing. Its super effective against every other regional bird thanks to its Electric/Flying typing, and can bully them into giving it what it wants.
this thumbnail goes hard
21:55 Take that parrots
BIRD JESUS?! that’s probably one of my favorite hyperspecific references that a lot of people probably don’t catch on to. the best part is, idk if it was intentional or not XD
definitely is
Love Kilowattrel. Favorite gen 9 Pokémon. Color scheme and looks so cool in battle
I’M DYING BC OF THE PUNS 18:30
A better excuse for the electric type for them could have been like monster hunter's astolos, the constant movement builds up electricity, ready to be used
Personally I love Kilowattrel. I added Wattrel to my team to evolve it for the dex, but then it stayed for the rest of the game. I love the design and it's very fun to use
A lot of people call their designs boring I don’t get that
The black and yellow looks awesome and the spiky patterns are unique
The pirate inspiration is really unique
Also plain = gray or brown
Black and yellow = distinct
23:20 The BOO got me lol
I love wattrel and kilowattrel! They're my favorite bird pokemon now cause they're really cute. And the one I raised was the most useful mon on my team.
I busted to da thumbnail bruv.
If Kilowatrel gets a regional form or something I would not be surprised if they gave it the Flying/Dark Type due to there underhanded tactics.
