    Hello Peter. Panadol/Paracetamol, Tylonol can only be bought in the smaller packets because there were some cases of suicide and attempted suicide in the UK. The H.M. Coroner had found that some people were addicted, and it was proved in more than one case where someone had a really large quantity of a Panadol based material. It was decided that for the general public it would be safer if quantities were restricted.

    • @peterkonradort
      @peterkonradort  10 місяців тому

      Yeah I understand why they restrict the large quantities! It’s just less convenient lol. My bigger issue is with the blister packs. I also understand why they do that, but coming from the US where almost all your meds (especially prescriptions) come in little bottles, it’s an adjustment having packaging that’s much less convenient to open and use.

      If you need pain killers so often and in the quantities that you need a bottle of it, you need to seek medical advice, not a quicker/more convenient way to glug pain killers.
      Think you are still stuck in the US "I can't afford medical help" mindset.

    Peter, if you want a filter coffee. You might be better off looking for a cafe or "greasy spoon" type of establishment rather that a coffee shop. Strange they suggested an americano, I would have thought a flat white would have been closer to a filter coffee?

    Hey Peter. Great to see you showcasing the calming, slightly decaying, beauty of Irvine Harbour in the background there! I wish you'd seen it back when there was a lot more investment in the area, when there was more to the Maritime Museum, the Magnum leisure centre was still standing and bustling with people from all over, the Beach Park wasn't a massive, collapsing rabbit warren, and most of the sand dunes were still intact.
    Even so, it's still a great spot. I grew up there but now mostly come down as a tourist from Glasgow, to let my kid go wild in the surprisingly mild waters of the Firth of Clyde.
    Growing up, lot of people in North Ayrshire were quick to talk it down, and I must admit, I got out as soon as I could. But it's great to hear the positive perspective of an American who's come to the area. As a photographer, you must love trying to capture the amazing light over Arran, Ailsa Craig and the Firth.

    Hi Peter, you are totally correct. You do not have to declare your perscription drugs when you enter the UK. However some drugs freely available on persciption in North America are not available or controlled in the UK. Bringing any of these drugs into the UK may constitute a criminal offence having said that there is no requirement to declare them on entry. If they were illigal you wouldnt declare them anyway, who would. That is why you prescription drugs must be on your person when you enter the UK. On your person means in your pocked or hand luggage. If its in the hold you may be suspected of concealment if caught and that is a very big 'if'.
    Good luck.

I think they are going to introduce toilet paper soon . Just use fish and chip paper or the daily record until then . What is this thing that is called the telephone and television? I can't wait for that to reach Scotland .
    Coffee beans online , you are an american. You will be on Amazon 24 hrs a day . I'm just pulling your leg . I'm glad you want to live in Scotland . All the very best. I really enjoyed your video . Big step to move to a new country . Sincerely well done 👏

I don't know if you are ever north of the River Clyde but I help to run a charity coffee shop within Dumbarton Sheriff Court (G82 1QR) and we serve a lovely filter coffee for £1.50 per 9 ounce cup (coffee from Matthew Algie, a Glasgow-based blender). Everyone seems to like it. We're open 9am to 1.30pm Mondays through Fridays within the court building (ground floor, turn right just beyond the main entrance door). We're open for everyone, not just court users. Long shot, I know, but you would be made very welcome (unfortunately we don't have couches, just tables!)

    Sorry, I disagree with the measuring cups being difficult to get here. They are easily obtained and I have a couple of sets I have had for years.
    In respect of binders - I agree our standard binders are A4 but if you look for Foolscap sized binders (Amazon or any Stationers) they should fit your paperwork.

    I moved to Scotland from the USA not very long after you did and I very much agree with your assessment of all of these.
    A few other over the counter medications that I find really useful to have friends bring over from the USA are:
    Extended release pseudoephedrine: Only immediate release is available here and this is the kind of medication that you want to last a long time.
    Cough drops: A lot of your favorites are probably not available in Scotland
    Keyboards are another important thing to bring over, especially if your job involves a lot of typing. UK keyboards are not the same as US keyboards and it can be really disorienting. This is especially true if you write code and use a lot of the special characters on the keyboard and have motor memory regarding where to find them.

    I really don't see any of the items that are must have, perhaps it's convenient to have the measuring spoons but that's about all.
    I can't remember when I last saw a deodorant that had a ball, mainly just spray and plenty of choice.
    Bringing a big bottle of pills through an airport would be an interesting experience and I suspect questions will be asked.
    I'd wonder if you need so many painkillers then perhaps there's something wrong.
    Restrictions on paracetamol numbers are there for a good reason to help prevent suicide.
    Having actual prescription drugs (insulin etc) for a few days or weeks until you get into the health service here would be sensible but a pharmacist can normally do an emergency prescription if need be, probably you'd have to pay if you're a visitor.

    If I had my druthers, I'd be in Scotland. Love it there! -- But I hear you about the coffee. I first visited in 1998. There was one place, an Italian cafe, where you could get decent coffee. As I've visited over the years, they've come a long way. More cafes, better coffee. I don't know if you're gonna find what you're looking for coffee wise. I needed this video two months ago.
    I have to agree about deodorant! Yikes! It’s horrific here with roll ons and sprays!
    I used Native brand in California and it was one I really liked. They don’t ship to the UK. The only comparable one here is Wild - and it’s a ridiculous deodorant in the sense that you buy a metal dispenser and then you buy the stick refills. Well, the stick refills are so tiny you go through them so fast and they constantly pop out of the metal container!
    The other thing I’d suggest someone bring over - especially if they are planning to stay here permanently or for a long time and might run into having to print American documents. I just had to print documents for the sale of my house in California, and while it wasn’t a big deal for the title company, we had to print them on smaller A4 paper. And the title company and lawyers in the US charge a fee if the paper isn’t standard letter or legal. So I suggest packing a ream or two of letters and legal printer paper. Printers here can print on it no problem, but they don’t actually have any of it in stock. I couldn’t find it on Amazon UK either.

    • @peterkonradort
      @peterkonradort  10 місяців тому

      Yeah I use one specific fragrance of old spice which doesn’t exist here lol. That’s a good idea about the paper! I don’t think I would ever need to print on 8.5x11 but if you’re able to bring some with it wouldn’t hurt to have it just in case!

    • @MichelleJonesKralka

      @@peterkonradortlegal documents that need to be notarized was why I thought I needed US letter or legal paper. I had to print the files in the UK and then have them notarized and couriered back to the US. Because I didn’t have ‘normal’ paper sizes, the US lawyer will charge me a fee because my paper docs don’t match the size of the rest of documents that didn’t need wet signatures. Just something to think about if someone is moving here and will eventually sell their home. Shockingly, there are still states that require wet signatures and notarized documents. Aka California.

      Can you explain what you mean by the problem with U.K. deodorants “roll-ons and sprays”? I can understand the problem with the rollers - I don’t particularly like them myself, at all - but I can’t understand your issue with the sprays? Do deodorants in the US not use sprays?

    Spray deodorant is definitely more popular in UK than roll on
    Melatonin is sold in the U.S. as a dietary supplement, not as a medication. This means that melatonin products are not closely regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I've no idea what the regulation is in the UK, but I've never met anyone who takes it. It's use as a 'medicine' isn't backed by much science.
