Scottish people are the nicest indeed. I only spent 2 weeks in Scotland a month ago, but I am in love with the people. I remember at one point I was travelling on bus 26 to Portobello and a drunk guy on a seat behind me puked all over the place. Everybody had to get off, the bus didn't go any further and we had to wait for another one to come. Me, coming from Hungary, expected people and the driver to be angry at that guy, but nobody were. The driver made sure he was fine, gave him advice (like take deep breaths, etc) and when he got better, elder ladies were nicely talking to him while we all were waiting for the next bus. In my country people would have shouted at him, ignored him, etc. Scottish people were genuinely nice to me too all the time, they were smiling at me, etc which is such a huge shift from what we are used to here in Central-Eastern Europe. (And not just here, honestly, no offence to French people and English ones, but I have always found them to be extremely rude for no reason, so I tend to say that this kindness really is a uniquely Scottish thing).

We English living here get to smile like that too in Edinburgh. It's so used to tourists and proud to show the city off to everybody, whatever nationality!

I think most English people, particularly the middle-class in Southern England, are extremely stand-offish. I had a similar experience once on a train from Victoria to Brighton. The train was full and several young lads were standing in the gangway when one of them threw up quite violently. Everyone just shuffled away and I didn't see anyone say anything, let alone offer any assistance. But I think someone pulled the communication cord and the train stopped at Gatwick Airport. The transport police piled onto the train and arrested the young man and his companions.
Do folks use the word 'Boak' in Edinburgh like they do in Glasgow?

So I’m thinking of coming over in September. What is the weather like then, do I need to bring clothes like you’re October outfit? As a first Generation Canadian I can agree with your statements on our PM! However I love the Royals they may spend a lot of money but they really do help many, many people also. I can’t wait to get my feet on Scottish ground for the first time.❤️🇨🇦

21:36 I came to Scotland wanting to be left alone. After 30+ years this plan has worked a little too well, but certainly it's a lot more quiet than choosing to live in London or even Athens. It's no surprise that the kind of creative that Edinburgh is famous for is writers. I used to go on trips to Tokyo where I'd just absorb the people density for a few days, and then come back to the emptiness.

14:06 I can relate so much, in Germany we have the same culture (even in west Germany which wasn’t USSR). The people around you act cold and stoned faced so you’re responding the same and don’t expect and give kindness unless it’s given to you. It was kind of a shock to me that strangers smiled when talking to me in shops etc.😅

That super power of being able to determine how long it takes to walk to a destination is very true. There is also the thrill walking through the various neighbourhoods, each of which is a unique experience...like walking from Morningside across the Meadows and through the Old Town and New Town to reach Canonmills...then up Glenogle Road to reach Stockbridge. There is so much to experience within such short distances - a world of history and inspiration within a mile or two.

As a Scottish woman who’s been living in Germany for 25 years you can imagine how sad I was coming here wondering why nobody was friendly to me or asking me questions. Even after all this time, and I speak German, I am still pretty sad about it. I also miss getting away from people. If you go for a forest walk you meet cyclists, joggers and dog walkers. Impossible to pee in private or just get away from people.

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Рік тому +8

I love that you mentioned "peeing in private" 😅 definitely an integral part of Scottish hikes!!
Czech people are quite similar to Germans in this - although the more East you go through the country, the more you can just start a little talk which I always love doing!

    • @scarba
      @scarba Рік тому +3

@@Kakibot I might be wrong but I think Scottish people are better at integrating foreigners and accepting them and teaching them the culture and language. In Germany this happens with language courses and citizenship courses with tests. I think in Scotland it’s less formal, people correct your English mistakes in daily life and explain how things work. Germans don’t do this. I discovered once I was saying the wrong article for croissant for about 20 years. I was so shocked that no one in a bakery ever corrected me in all these years. By the way one of my funniest memories of my mother was her peeing in the highlands in a forest when she started screaming so loud, she just was peeing on a frog 🐸! Anyway women never get the chance to pee in Germany and everyone needs to pee especially on a forest walk with no toilets 🚽

    • @linajurgensen4698
      @linajurgensen4698 Рік тому

As a German I agree with everything except the “you’re not alone on walks“ as it totally depends on in which area of the country you live, season, weather day of the week, it can also help going with locals, they usually know when a forest is empty.

@@linajurgensen4698 I’m in Rheinland Pfalz and you can never ever be really alone in Germany. It’s 80 million people and Scotland has only 5 million and a lot of uninhabited islands and land. You just can’t get that level of isolation in Germany. It’s very frustrating.

I'm a senior citizen (from the U.S.) who loves the pomp and ceremony that comes with the Royals and I genuinely believe that even if the monarchy was abolished it wouldn't make poor people any better off. There will always be rich people and, unfortunately, poor people. A Constitutional Monarchy seems to be a better alternative than the CLUSTERF#*K that is our current government here in America. We have extremely wealthy people and extremely poor people too. Just saying that if the monarchy went away it wouldn't necessarily solve all of the inequity woes. The castles, traditions, etc. contribute to the tourism coffers because of people who do like the royals! I enjoy your videos since my daughter and her family also live in Edinburgh and have for over twenty years!

I've been to Scotland and I loved it there. I spent 2 1/2 weeks there made friends ( unfortunately they were an older couple and are no longer here ) but I loved their hospitality there. ( That reminded
me of my grandma too, she was a very hospitable person ) they will talk your ear off if you let them. We were invited to this couples house to have high tea then before we left, to come back to the states, to have dinner with them. When we left, I cried. I have scottish ancestry and heritage. I honestly felt as if I were at home. I also spent time I also spent England before going home and I found the english to be stuck up and cold. But the welsh are nice people too.

Hi Kat! First, I want to say I'm sorry you are having a rough day and just wanted to let you know that I adore your videos and have learned so much from them. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us even on the rough days 💛
Second, I am currently awaiting news on a position I applied for in Edinburgh (I'm from the US) and have been really considering how well I would adjust to life there. It was such a relief to hear your commentary regarding drinking. I know that pubs are an inherent part of the culture, but as someone who gave up drinking over a year ago, it was a comfort to hear that making friends and meeting people is still possible! I'm happy to know I can put that worry to rest and focus on bigger issues... like not having a dryer 😅
P.S. My grandmother was 100% Polish so being able to dive a little into that culture is a perk I didn't know existed! Thanks again for your time and effort. I hope you start to feel better and have a great week! 🌞

You'll find Polish shops and Polish people, in most UK cities. We had many Poles arrive before, during and after WW2 - even Polish Airforce Squadrons that fought throughout the war. Then we've had big migrations, from the EU, in more recent times - vanguarded by Poles.
You'll be ok for good coffee (Italian families and caterers date back to the 1890s), good food and good company, in Edinburgh, Glasgow and most parts of Scotland. The arts and music are major parts of life, too.

I'm returning to Edinburgh this May for the second time. I was first there in 2018 and I loved the city, but I'm more excited about returning because of you. You are delightful. Even my husband who doesn't watch UA-cam videos likes you. As it gets closer to our trip I'm going to rewatch your videos and make a list of your favorite places and use your suggestions as our guide. If you want to track the demographics of the people who watch your channel you can add two people who are old enough to be your grandparents. If you look for us in May, we'll be the older couple walking around eating takeout porridge and watching the birdies. You are making a difference--I hope that makes you feel a little better.😊

I'm glad you enjoy this country. You are on the East Coast which is much better than here on the West Coast. We have more tropical damp, slight humidity and the tropical trees love it. The East Coast is dryer and a bit colder in the winter. You have many more sunny days vs my area. I always laugh when England folks say the weather is miserable. England as a whole recieves 440 more hours of sunshine than Scotland. I meet several people here from England and they say they never realized the difference. Some of them return to England. 😅 Yes, Edinburgh is a tourist trap and so different from other Scottish cities.

Lived in Abbeyhill for over 30 years now. If you manage to buy a house or flat here it's a marvellous place to have a dog (or two)! You just go down Abbeyhill Road, from the Abbeyhill bus stops, turn left under the bridge and there are entrances along the road further down or Meadowbank, from Milton Street (end) and Waverley Park Terrace into the King's (previously Queen's Park) and Arthurs Seat for great walks. Dog heaven!
If you turn right at the bottom of Abbeyhil Road , it leads you to Holyrood Palace, Parliament, the bottom of the Royal Mile, a road to the entrance at the back of Waverley Station or steps up to get to those views and back to Princes Street.
I saw the Queen several times in her car coming down Abbeyhill road going back to the Palace. The RF take several routes back and several entrance choices for security reasons. PS: We now have parking meters installed so don't come by car!

You make some interesting observations ! , most of us are guilty moaning about our climate but in reality it should be a lot colder considering how far North we are , i guess the trade off is all 4 seasons in 1 day ! , apparently Edinburgh is the driest city in Scotland with high average amounts of sunny days which is hard to believe in reality , make the most of next month which usually has the least rain , so much for the April showers ! , that constant wind must make it feel colder than it actually is. Don't understand why so many Scots hate the Royal Family especially when the senior Royals are more Scottish than English and they contribute indirectly more to the UK economy than they cost , inevitably no one will come close to the Queen's exemplary sense of service and duty so i think we need to lower our expectations and realise they are just as flawed and dysfunctional as us commoners !.

It's so weighted it's a wonder this island doesn't tip over. And Scotland is much less remote and offering free space as it was. The number of vehicles parked on Highland roads is now breathtaking Tour buses are evident every single day of the year on rural roads.

I live in a village in North Yorkshire. I was in Edinburgh a week or so ago. I will be going up to the North West Highlands of Scotland for a week or so in about 6 weeks.
Life anywhere had its ups & downs. For me a big city (Edinburgh, Newcastle/Tyneside, Glasgow, Leeds) would be OK for a visit but far from ideal to live in. Small cities like Perth, Stirling (near to where my wife was born), Durham, Ripon etc might be better. But I live in a village with a village green, village cricket club, a decent shop and village pubs - where I know I can go in, on my own or not, and see people I know. I prefer that. My wife was happy, if I was aeay or busy or unable to go out through work, to go into our local pub on her own amd she'd feel safe and certainly meet friends there. Towns bigger than Dundee are nearby, and York fairly near, if I need a city culture-fix.
I guess you are the sort of person who would find friends fairly easily whether you lived in a village, town or city. Even if a particular day doesn't "work out", you will find the next day will be fine.
Stay happy and know that your videos give much pleasure to thousands of people you will never meet.

11:30 just got to comment on this because I moved from Scotland to Australia in my 20s (much older now) but before I moved I would not be seen DEAD in shorts. I hated that. I was always jeans or a nice casual trouser.
I quickly learned on moving here that did not work and now my entire dress sense has changed. I feel weird going into long clothes (for anything non-formal), just as an example. Every aspect of how I dress has changed. I was always out in a coat in Scotland "just in case" but here I ... actually don't have one.
Oh! Had to quick edit to add the most egregious sin I have adopted.
Sandals. I now wear sandals. Lord have mercy...

I’m half Scottish and half Welsh. I am very accustomed to the “hatred” towards England. Yeah…the rest of the UK definitely have an issue with England. Whenever I visit my Scottish family, England is an inevitable point of discussion which always ends in the same way.
Scotland is a wonderful place though. Even despite the power divide.
Recently, the divide is becoming more apparent. Especially in Wales too. It’s unavoidable wherever you decide to live in the UK.
England is a bit like the “America” of the UK. They think they’re the centre of the universe.
    Great video :)

I find it a political divide, fuelled by policies made at the Westminster Parliament that don’t meet the needs of Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland but work for the much larger and larger population of England. Like many Scots, I have English friends and family members who. I love dearly.

The divisions in the UK are artificially constructed by nationalist politicians to serve their own purposes. I live in Manchester (very friendly by the way); I'm a mix of Irish, Scots and English. There's no difference - including with people from anywhere else too. Individuals are different, that's all. Neighbours raised on the same street or even family members can be far more different than people from other places, let alone very nearby regions (the UK is a relatively small country).

Don't worry about the drinking. Some of us have cut down a lot since our 20's.
Two of the best ways to deal with Festival crowds are 1. Get the most out of the culture and 2. get the hell out of the city if you can.
2 hours and you can be over in Ayr or head south to the borders and or England or Perthshire.
Failing that Corstorphine Hill, Blackford Hill and Blackford Pond and Straiton Nature reserve if you don't want a walk with hills.
The city centre is great in your 20s and 30s....then you start really seeing what is going on.
Oh yeah. Love the videos. As an Edinburgh native that has been away for a decade, it's nice to see all the changes in the city from a different prospective.
      Keep up the good work.

I’m obsessed with steps, so walking, I think most days, wouldn’t bother me. Maritime weather there but here in the northeast US, it gets cold and very humid in summer but Scottish wind would get to me.
I think there will always be an excess of wealth for some-how else do you afford New Town, ha-and poverty, sadly. I think the royal family is antiquated but I am not sure abolishing it would change much. I think any respect or duty died with the Queen. But, I am a red-headed stepchild American. 😅
I think every place has a romanticism to it and then settling down would likely show that the same issues affect all people, affordability, employment, housing, etc. Some do well with change and others don’t.
    Bagpipes, always yes!
Make your own bread, Kat! You and Simon, next video! 😉
    Hope you’re doing better. ❤

You have dual citizenship as living in Scotland and your Country of Birth . For example if you ever went missing or something on holiday the tv news reporters would descibe you as a Scottish or British National . You're a Honoury Scottish Lassie lol .

So i decided to try and learn a bit of Polish to shorten the gap between us .....biggest mistake ever lol that language is bonkers, even she herself admitted it's mad.

I do not like Edinburgh because I live in a small town and always have, but I've been there many times.
