In this video we play The Half-Life 2 Beta But Not Really (Stream Highlights)
The purpose of this mod is to recreate the style and atmosphere of the beta version of Half Life 2. "Beta Aesthetics" does not change the maps or the gameplay itself in a serious way. Only textures, models, sounds, soundtrack and shaders have been changed to match the 1999-2001 era.
Almost all the material was taken and reworked from the leaked 2003 beta version of HL2. Many materials were also taken from HL1, since in the earliest periods of development, VALVE had not yet created much content for HL2, therefore they used some elements (sounds, for example) from the first game, and the Beta HL2 itself was much closer in atmosphere and the style to HL1.

The quote "the real beta doesn't exist" was a joke, I realize that the leaked beta build has been available since like 2003. It was a sarcastic way of saying "there is no completed beta campaign".

With how obsessed people are with the beta you'd think someone would've made a full game by now that captured the look and feel and uses the cut ideas in their own creation. Peripetia seems to be doing that a bit though.
One really underrated thing about this mod in my opinion is its use of Half Life 1 sounds. I can't exactly describe it, but it just makes it feel a lot more true to what the beta was going for.

The fast zombies sounding like screaming babies is unsettling though.

The ammo and sawblades were left there by Grigori and other (now dead/zombified) Ravenholm residents trying to fight the zombies.
How though, it's not like they had gravity guns to shoot the sawblades with. Were they using them as melee weapons? lol

11:54 The reason I like Ravenholm is because its the best place to use those revolutionary 2004 physics as a weapon, though if I was on the team I'd have also used that map to introduce the crossbow for the same reason, the close quarters make it more likely you'll pin a zombie to a wall.
While you can make your way through the whole game using almost entirely random objects with the gravity gun, most people just coming into the game would be squeamish about futzing around with a brick against someone who's shooting at you from all the way over there;
a zombie can't shoot you so you have plenty of time to recover unharmed if you miss with that toilet you just chucked.

You know the radio from your If Half-Life Alyx was written by a bit and Watching Paint Dry videos? There is a file called TV_music in half life 2's sound files, the half life 2's beta one is significantly different
If you want to play other games on the channel, try filming vids on the side about other games but don’t let it interfere with the half life 2 upload schedule, therefore you can transition from one game to another without loosing your audience

The shotgun sounds like hitting a plastic barrel with a stick, while stacking it 4-5 times, and adding like a reverb/echo effect.

Honestly I find gmod ravenholm maps scarier than the actual Ravenholm chapter cause there's no enemies to distract you and the unsettling atmosphere triggers this part of my brain that makes me feel danger even when there's none.
