BluesBop compares 6 different Chromatic Harmonicas! (now with answers to mystery harps)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лют 2012
- Well, call me crazy but I wanted to compare a bunch of my harps for recording purposes, and then it evolved into this! It was great fun so I decided to make it a little contest for those of you who care...
I compared these Chromatics:
THE 280 (customized with an acrylic comb)
THE CBH 2016
THE SIRIUS 56-S
THE CX-12
THE 270 "Deluxe"
THE CHROMONICA 1 "Deluxe"
Yes, they are ALL HOHNERS except for the Sirius 56-S. This is simply what I had in my arsenal, but they all have unique tones as you will hear. I will happily re-stage this "shoot-out" if a manufacturer wants to send me a harp to compare... ;-p
The rules for the "contest" are simple: There are 6 spots where the photo identifying the harp has been replaced with the letters "A" through "F". None of the "mystery" harps are the same, so you can use a process of elimination if you recognize some of them.
The contest was won! So I'm printing the answers, and annotating them on the video as well.
Here they are:
a 280
b 270 deluxe
c Sirius 56
d 2016
e Chromonica I
f CX-12
HAHA! My first "Thumbs Down"! I always have to wonder about a persons reflex to hit that button...After all, I was just comparing a bunch or harps...thanks to all of you for visiting! Cheers!
Nice listen and fun game! Thanks!
Thanks for this! Wonderful playing and very well done. Your terrific playing has inspired me to practice even more.
I still listen to this to learn the variety of tones. And I am NOT surprised A.J. Fedor got them right!Thank you for doing this video!!!
Great stuff!....I think your playing in the key of F....I expect my Hohner Chromatic to be delivered sometime this week and hope to then play along with you (Impossibe, I know, but I'm surely going to give it a try) I love your playing!...
Perhaps it's 70% player,30% instrument!?
I'm not even going to try and guess, but man that was some great playing!
I don't know which is which but one thing is for sure, they all sound GREAT!!! as does the the person playing them.
No clues, ya gotta use your ears only and it really isn't easy as I'm finding out. Everyone gets the 280 right though-so there's at least one clue. Thanks for posting, feel free to guess again if you'd like!
I did not think I would love the CX sound so much. Now I just need several hundred dollars, and, of course, I need the CX12 Jazz harmonica. Great sounds, fantastic harps all.
Think I misunderstood how you were setting these up - trying one more time - why not?
A - 280
B - CBH 2016
C - 270 Deluxe
D - Sirius
E - Chromatica
F- CX-12
And that's my final offer ;) lol
Fantastic.
Great fun and very useful. Cheers fae Bonnie Scotland.
Sirius wins on this one! Full, round sound. When compared to the others, the others sound squeaky or squaky, and muffled. Not the Sirius...it is full and rich sounding, and I might add a tad "darker." Delicious!
Thank youuu. God bless you!
My ear isn't sharp enough to tell them apart. But maybe there's a clue in the final bars. The harps appear in this order at the very end:
280
CBH
Chromonica
CX12
Sirius (it's only there for about 1 frame!)
270
That's my bet.
Instrument range could be a clue. Chromonica 1, a 10-hole, could have played C. So these are possibilities:
A - 280
B - Sirius
C - Chromonica 1
D - 270
E - CBH
F - CX12
or
A - 280
B - CBH
C - Chromonica 1
D - 270
E - Sirius
F - CX12
or
A - 280
B - 270
C - Chromonica 1
D - CX12
E - Sirius
F - CBH
In all honesty, much as I really enjoy your playing - they all sound very 'scratchy' through my speakers - which aren't set up well...so it's very difficult to really hear the individual chromatics. LOT of fun, though. I quite enjoyed trying to narrow it down. Glad I got at least one right, lol. ;) I still might try again.
my previous post as a list:
A - 280
B - Sirius
C - Chromonica 1
D - 270
E - CBH
F - CX12
or
A - 280
B - CBH
C - Chromonica 1
D - 270
E - Sirius
F - CX12
or
A - 280
B - 270
C - Chromonica 1
D - CX12
E - Sirius
F - CBH
Very interesting !
And, of course, very well played !
I chiefly use Hering (Special 48 and Velvet Voice) and Hohner CX12JAZZ. But I have many other chromatics in my drawers !!!
Kind regards.
Christian.
Hey BluesBob
Nice sound. Your are certainly one of the best BluesBop harmonica players on youtube. Can you tell me the track you are using I'd like to play along. That is the track you are using for the video that compares these 6 chromatics.
Thanks for sharing
Hello all! I do have a winner, and it was none other than A.J. Fedor, the man who founded SLIDEMEISTER-which anyone interested in Chromatic Harmonicas should join! Thanks so much for your participation...!

Oops! I meant to say Chromatica, not "chromonica," in that last post.

Hey increiblemente sabroso... from sunny Mexico I salute you and had a great moment listening to you
Well! I have been playing the harmonica for about 40 years but after listening to this, I am just so overwhelmed. What beautiful fluidity of the notes. I wonder how you get each note to sound so hollow (is it all in the way you cup your hand, or so you use your mouth as well?).
My colleague was presented a Super Chromonica 270 Deluxe, but isn't quite sure what to do with it, so he lent it to me to figure out. I love the blues and know a bit of note bending. I have a Hohner Special 20 Marine Band blues harp in A, and so badly want to be able to play blues on it, especially for some of the rock classics like Roadhouse Blues by the Doors, as I am a guitarist and a singer as well. Please do give me some tips on how to do it right or guide me to good videos which can help me on my mission.
And once again, thanks for giving me a great listening experience. You rock, you really do!
Hi Paul. You are better off using a harp for Roadhouse Blues. That was what was used for that track. The chromatic harmonica takes a lot more practice to play proper blues on.Most of the old blues players like Little Walter and George Smith played the 16 holed Hohner 64 chromatics with not so much emphasis on the button. They are usually not as easy to bend the notes on, although there are great players out there who obviously can.Stick with your special 20 in A for the blues for now and listen to some of the great chromatic players and just go on from there. This is only my humble advice and I would never class myself as an expert.Just very experienced.Jim.Liverpool.
curleyteeth - I totally agree. I use my diatonics for Blues and Rock, & my chromatic for Jazz. And the funny being, all the major scales (A to G) for a chromatic harmonica only go up to about the eighth hole! And like a momo, I bought a 16 hole chromatic. I do love it though. Plays like a dream and sings like angels.
Here is my guess!
A - 280(although mine does not sound quite the same as yours :-)~ )
B - 270 Deluxe(it sounds like my chromonica!)
C - Chromatica - 1
D - CX - 12
E - CBH 2016
F - Sirius
I really wanna see the results, i think i got B and D correct :-)~
Never mind which one it is, the music is great!
a. 280
b. CX12
c. CBH 2016
d. 270 deluxe
e. Chromatica 1
f. Sirius
That's my take

Hey man! I use a Countryman Lavalier B3 sometimes in the studio, held between my middle and ring finger. But Lavs tend to feedback live so I use a Shure 58 modified by Greg Heumann at blowsmeaway Productions.
hey Bluesbob, clean sound, what need i to make for a clean sound?I have a Adix Fireball but the sound is not so good for chromatik harp,i have a Edirol UA-4FX,but the sound ......sch...
Unique, to say the least.
Pl try to compare harmonica of same value do you know the rate of 270 deluxe and sirius pl check
The music starts at 0:59
ok thanks
What I just learned -again-it's the player and not the instrument.
It's both, really.
Frederick Louis Specht That old Chromonica sure sounds sweet, though!
Playing ability always matters before the instrument or model being used.
I think you played them in the exact same sequence as you listed them above.
TomC/
a 280
b 270 deluxe
c 2016
d Sirius
e Chromatica 1
f CX-12
Some close guesses, but STILL NO EXACT MATCHES! That Harp can still be yours! ;-D
Sounds like 1920 music they deliver a good tone all of them.
So what is the correct order?
Cool
d THE 280 (customized with an acrylic comb)
b THE CBH 2016
e THE SIRIUS 56-S
a THE CX-12
f THE 270 "Deluxe"
c THE CHROMONICA 1 "Deluxe"
@tdeecy Sorry Tom, a good guess but wrong...
The piano backround was nice, but it would surely sound better if a string bass were used instead for the backround!..
? There is a string bass on this track so...?
jason the name song?
I think it’s Don’t Be That Way”
Parlami della 2016 CBH della Hohner che mi pare interessante!
Christ. The times that I could have bought the Hohner 2016 from so many shops when they were available. Now, they are as rare as rocking horse shit.JimLiverpool.

How the fuck do you expect me to understand that.Even with translation I am at a loss but thanks anyway for your help.Jim.Liverpool.
its a link to ebay in Germany where I am selling a Hohner 2016 CBH for 179 Euros. If you´re interested let me know.
genio!
@SlimHeilpern Dude you rock! I just subscribed to your channel...
No Seydels?
CSMedia - Yeah. Shocking. It may be because replacement reeds and valves are easier to get for the Hohners & Suzukis. That's just my guess.
Just like comparing cameras and trumpets and anything else. It's far more the player that determines the quality of the sound. I guess we should play more and stop lusting over what else you could buy/collect until we are much better players.
Cbh is A
Sorry. I guess it is "Chromonica 1"
Wow this is even more frustrating with "notebook" speakers. But I'll guess:
a 280
b 270 deluxe
c 2016
d Sirius
e Chromatica 1
f CX-12
(like pickin' numbers for the lottery :o)
grande medio cover a toots thielemans sale mejor incluso
