Ignore the criticism, your off the couch learning and having fun. The knowledge and experience your gaining is worth it, even if its all scrap in the end.
I watch your videos after my day in bed and it satisfies me so much knowing that there are more people who love just as much as I do fixing things, particularly motors/vehicles and other machines. The comments section and your videos make my day great and bring it to a perfect end.
Your are doing just fine. If the pistons are stuck, remove the camshaft, put a grease fitting in a spark plug, with both valves closed pump grease into the cylinder, until it breaks the piston free. It will use a lot of grease, but it works. I would get stuck marine engines free that way.
Think about building a overhead crane for your shop man. If you keep wrestling things like that you will be essentially cripple when you get 40 and you will have no choice but build one or quit. so build one now. i really enjoyed your lathe build, I know you have the engineering skills needed for a overhead crane and would be youtube gold to watch. keep up the good work...and keep your back in the process
best thing to do is NOT face a camera towards light sources...... like the 2 windows behind you... put lights and windows behind your cam. P.S. don't worry about anyone thinkin' u don't know what ur doing even if you don't!! I was the same when i was young, and I fixed all my toys by trial, error, manuals, and google! I'm a good mechanic now. keep it up!
I love the armchair in the garage. Personally, I find that half the work I get done is made possible by sitting on my little garage couch for a sec to re-gather my thoughts.
Don't let people sitting in front of there computer tell you how to tinker. if it wasn't fro tinkers we would have no automobiles no telephones and no internet to criticise people for there creativity. Just do what makes you happy and never apologize for wanting to learn hands on. Keep up the good work.
Awesome Video man. Worse case you can grab a cheap drill mounted hone from harbor freight runt it through the cylinders and just run it just like it is may smoke a little but not sure that is that is a big of a deal. Looks really good though. Timing chain and tensioner look decent too those are the parts that where toast on a few that I bought over the years.
I love the attitude, You may not have much of an idea what you are doing but at least that's exactly how you are going into this. After all you aint going to learn anything unless you throw yourself into the deep end from time to time.
Who cares what people say. You’re learning as you go. As long as you learn from your mistakes, you’re all good man. You’re a talented kid, keep doing what you’re doing man.
I rebuilt a 1973 cb500 engine. Bro. If you're gonna try to salvage it by rebuilding the top end and reboring out the cylinders (DOO EET) just please look up a service manual. Those cams and timing chain have to be on there a certain way when they're put back together. Also since you dropped the timing chain, you have to take the engine all the away apart to the bottom now
those motors are very good and will run for significantly more miles than 22,000 miles. However, the gs500 engines are very particular on valve clearances. Go ahead and check clearances all around and shim them if needed.
any engine I've come across that has had a possibility of rust in the cylinders. or has just sat for years I fill with auto trans fluid let it set at least over night. it will lubricate it will take care of any rust and it burns once the fires. just make sure to rotate the engine by hand to purge the excess out of the cylinders
forgot to say that the other comments are pretty great of an idea clean the cylinder with vinegar .but remember to clean the bottom part of the carbs with GAS and ill recomment A old toothbrush to clean the inside walls of the carb DO NOT TAKE THE RUBBER GASKET OFF when cleaning the carb it WILL RUIN IT. and the last thing is blow in all the holes when you take the carburator all apart!. im just writing this of my exp(i cant spell that well) i have been working on alot of 2 wheelers :-) like the channel
If you manage to scrub and hone the cylinders enough to get it to run, that would be great, even if you eventually get new jugs and pistons. Just check the compression after you lap the valves with compound(it's easy if you have a valve spring compressor). then reassemble it. Put some 2 stroke gas in the sparkplug hole, and try to start it.
up to you but i had a predator 212 came to me off a go cart it was stuck just like that had a lot of rust in the bore so i took it all apart cleaned it all and honed it out the guy brought me a parts engine that had blew the rod and i used the old rings on the piston that was stuck sure enough it runs good no smoke and power can be done is it the right way no but does work. just a thought. the piston rings were stuck and i broke it that y i got different set
If there is no pitting in the walls take some atf+ gas And put that in the cylinders and let them sit and then drain them out you'll need new rings but you won't need cylinders
I been thinking to re-watch this series and that moment the shop caught my attention like, damn mate your shop has a lot of stuffs now compare to these days. wow.
nice man I got a Kawasaki 500 I wanted to put into a dune buggy frame slash go-kart frame but it ended up being too nice of a bike to Salvage the motor good luck with your build man
By far my favorite video bro.seems people care more about something that ISNT theirs then their own.to them it must feel like they're being violated😂 keep the vids coming bro
Hows the piston and rings in that engine? MIGHT be good enough to re-use. You might even get away with just new rings. Having this engine on a go kart would be awesome.
for the 175 you could just look up wich size the carb is originally then buy one in the same size, make a custom mount for it, put the right jet in it and it will run
I love the learning and I love you just dropped the cam chain in the case good thing your taking cylinder off cause if you wasn’t that’s some you wouldn’t want to drop in the case. Hahahaha.
Make sure you balance the crankshaft in that 4speed gear box before you you make it run with a briggs 3hp. You can do it yourself in your shop, but you will need to take out the crank. If you would like details on how to balance the crank leave me a comment. I would be glad to help if you would like.
Next time with the chain get some wire and hold it up as you pull the head off. dont want to be dropping chain down if your not going to split the case
it is possible to reuse the rusty parts ive seen people get engine found outside and repair them if you were to jetwash the piston and cylinders while there stuck ike that dry the and then coat them with oil it will hel you to remove the pistons without scoring the cylinder or ruining the rings
For that year of bike 22,000 miles isn't that bad. Not sure how dependable those motors are known to be but but id say if you got it running the bearings and other stuff should have another 10,000+ miles left before showing any signs of wear
Not sure if you read these. I like the progression of your vids. You're learning. I remembered when I was your age. Here is my two cents. I would pick up a hone and hone the cylinders. I would say a ball hone, but kinda pricey. Just pick up a stone hone and touch up the cylinders, See how they look. It you have some pitting, see how deep it is. Don't be to worried about small ones. If you can, hone it all out. But if not just clean up the cylinder walls with a nice cross hatch. Then I would clean the pistons and then throw some new rings on it, Make you you file them properly. You can google this, if you never have. The only real concern here is the valves and valve seats. All can be fix but more difficult on your own. You could lap them depending on the condition. But I'm sure a local machine shop could clean them up for you. Meaning they would cut the seat and the valve. That is if they are savable. Sorry for the novel, Keep on pulling stuff apart and learning. Nothing wrong with messing up and hey Fuck the haters. They are out there and nothing you can do about it. Keep wrenching man!
Dude, sometimes I feel your mistakes are just happening cuz you're always hushing things too much. Dude you're awesome! Plan ahead. Take some time to allow yourself to see the mistakes you don't want to make 🙂
Places like that exaggerate it to be way bigger of a problem than it actually is. You could honestly just Hone the cylinder walls and get new piston rings and call it a day
Ratherbwelding your probably not reading this but I am your most biggest fan of all time I love the stuff you do please give me a shout out if you don't want to that's fine just want you know good job good luck on the gs500 Ps if your reading please reply
Clean everything with spray Carb clean and a cheap BRASS wire toothbrush (not Steel) from like harbor freight- , I'd try to clean and HONE that Cyl you have there before you buy a new one! either way you'll need to run a hone up and down the new one to make some fresh cross-hatch marks to re-seat the rings........ Watch out as I said in an earlier video, those GS500 twins are prone to have a bad 2nd gear!
Dude it's not the bad let the valves soak in Apple chider vinegar for 3 days and dingle ball hone the cylinder wall clean the carbs and it should be good to go
u could also put a lil oil in tge sylinder if it has rust If I were u Id keep the same pistons replace the rings and take a wire bush and some wd40 to the silender
You got that cylinder for so cheep because it scored on the inside people so those for really cheap so people can bore them out it's probably going to be messed up
Ignore the criticism, your off the couch learning and having fun. The knowledge and experience your gaining is worth it, even if its all scrap in the end.
Mike Bike You are absolutely correct. I've wrenched on these things for 45 years and started like this guy.
I started out just like this, learning all the while.
don't let people's bad comments get to you, there's not many people here who could build a lathe as well as you.
keep up the grate work...
I watch your videos after my day in bed and it satisfies me so much knowing that there are more people who love just as much as I do fixing things, particularly motors/vehicles and other machines. The comments section and your videos make my day great and bring it to a perfect end.

Who cares what ppl think, at least you are doing it and learning! That's the way you gotta do it! Props man props..
Don't let people sitting in front of there computer tell you how to tinker. if it wasn't fro tinkers we would have no automobiles no telephones and no internet to criticise people for there creativity. Just do what makes you happy and never apologize for wanting to learn hands on. Keep up the good work.
For the 175, stick a lawnmower carb on it, it won't produce the full rated power, but it should work fine.
AFriendlyMathematician or an aftermarket Chinese one will only cost about $15 plus shipping
It would be easier and probably cheaper just to go with a cheap Chinese one.
Awesome Video man. Worse case you can grab a cheap drill mounted hone from harbor freight runt it through the cylinders and just run it just like it is may smoke a little but not sure that is that is a big of a deal. if your just gonna use it on a gokart. clean it up and throw it back together. yeah it'll smoke some but who cares.
clean the carbs with wd40 it will take out the rust then rinse it with gssoline or diesel diesel would be best for tgat
I rebuilt a 1973 cb500 engine. Bro. If you're gonna try to salvage it by rebuilding the top end and reboring out the cylinders (DOO EET)
just please look up a service manual. Those cams and timing chain have to be on there a certain way when they're put back together. Also since you dropped the timing chain, you have to take the engine all the away apart to the bottom now
I would put the parts in diesel for a week and then clean it with a steel brush.
Erik Strandberg very fine brass brush is better than a steel one
Erik Strandberg or kerosene
Nice video!
I learn a lot from all your videos.
And you have a awesome shed!!
Glad to see you might have better luck with this engine. Hope it works out, be awesome to see it on a go cart.
those motors are very good and will run for significantly more miles than 22,000 miles. However, the gs500 engines are very particular on valve clearances. Go ahead and check clearances all around and shim them if needed.
when you bore it you use the stock the stock cylinder. the motorcycle shop that you go to would probably bore and hone you're sylinder for you
any engine I've come across that has had a possibility of rust in the cylinders. or has just sat for years I fill with auto trans fluid let it set at least over night. it will lubricate it will take care of any rust and it burns once the fires. just make sure to rotate the engine by hand to purge the excess out of the cylinders
Dang! You've come a ways. This is what it takes. Fuck yea!
the yamaha 175 intake boot is used in more bikes so they should be easy to find
forgot to say that the other comments are pretty great of an idea clean the cylinder with vinegar .but remember to clean the bottom part of the carbs with GAS and ill recomment A old toothbrush to clean the inside walls of the carb DO NOT TAKE THE RUBBER GASKET OFF when cleaning the carb it WILL RUIN IT. and the last thing is blow in all the holes when you take the carburator all apart!. im just writing this of my exp(i cant spell that well) i have been working on alot of 2 wheelers :-) like the channel

that top part of the engine is the cams oil is supposed to be in tgere chris . the cylinder is wht u want
I been thinking to re-watch this series and that moment the shop caught my attention like, damn mate your shop has a lot of stuffs now compare to these days. wow.

Watch Jenny's garage ct90 series, his motor was in worse condition that yours and he fixed it for cheap. Keep up the good work
Hey i watch that guy to👍
u can also bit ones that are already bored off u can get new piston heads and seals and rings for like 150
you are an inspiration .. good job
I love the learning and I love you just dropped the cam chain in the case good thing your taking cylinder off cause if you wasn’t that’s some you wouldn’t want to drop in the case. Hahahaha.
oil filter is in the frount under the cover between where the exhaust is
Spray pb blaster in the spark plug holes and let it set. Than you move the crank shaft.
Make sure you balance the crankshaft in that 4speed gear box before you you make it run with a briggs 3hp. You can do it yourself in your shop, but you will need to take out the crank. If you would like details on how to balance the crank leave me a comment. I would be glad to help if you would like.
Hi! I'm working on a similar project... But I can't get the cylinders off! Do you have any tips?
u can fill out an abandond title id its not stolen there is vin number check sights to finf out
Hone the heads, clean it up and put back together. And just run it. You can get a honing tool at Harbar Freight for around $25.00
Hey like your honesty.
Looks like these cylinders are cast iron sleeved, if they are then hone them, then have them measured to be sure you didn't do too much.
Next time with the chain get some wire and hold it up as you pull the head off. dont want to be dropping chain down if your not going to split the case
I was you I'd bore it and check the bottom end make sure its good and go from there. There should be a decent priced bore kit and come out great.
this was so fun to watch for some reason
you most likely will need pistons but hone the cylinders and it should clean the rust out and make a good surface
Beast Mode; balancing the bike hunched over and removing its engine!
it is possible to reuse the rusty parts ive seen people get engine found outside and repair them if you were to jetwash the piston and cylinders while there stuck ike that dry the and then coat them with oil it will hel you to remove the pistons without scoring the cylinder or ruining the rings
you can fix the cilinders by boring it to the next diameter ( 0.15mm difference )
and the related piston
dont worry everyone, hes a professional, he googled how to do all this
Did u snap the timing chain guide
Crankshaft bearings gotta be shot with that amount of water in it, never watched the whole videos, did you get it going in the end.
ive took thaat same engine and just hand sanded the slyinder and it worked fine
I have a 94 gs500 that I'm going to make a buggy with. really very simple bikes.
For that year of bike 22,000 miles isn't that bad. Not sure how dependable those motors are known to be but but id say if you got it running the bearings and other stuff should have another 10,000+ miles left before showing any signs of wear
the lighting is good

Dude, sometimes I feel your mistakes are just happening cuz you're always hushing things too much. Dude you're awesome!
Plan ahead. Take some time to allow yourself to see the mistakes you don't want to make
🙂
was the engine in the dead sea?
for the carb seal on the dirt bike use some rtv on it
I'm pretty sure if you bore it out and get lightly larger pistons it should run
Places like that exaggerate it to be way bigger of a problem than it actually is. You could honestly just Hone the cylinder walls and get new piston rings and call it a day
Make an off-road street bike 👍🏽👍🏽👌👌
Ratherbwelding your probably not reading this but I am your most biggest fan of all time I love the stuff you do please give me a shout out if you don't want to that's fine just want you know good job good luck on the gs500
Ps if your reading please reply
You may be able to hone the cylinders and get new wrings
you have a good chance of it Running
Literally one of the easiest motorcycles to work on. You can have that thing up and running in less than 2 months.
hone the cylinders and new pistons and rings and i think that would work fine and maybe some over sized rings
No, actually we don't care how you take it out or take it apart. As long as Ryan's not there.
In my garage I can NEVER find #10's, I'm always buying new ones lol I think i have like 3-4 different sets of #10's.
damn dude love the vid. keep up the good work. 👍
487 cm^3 just means its 487 cubic centimeters, thats not a part number lol
Clean everything with spray Carb clean and a cheap BRASS wire toothbrush (not Steel) from like harbor freight- , I'd try to clean and HONE that Cyl you have there before you buy a new one! either way you'll need to run a hone up and down the new one to make some fresh cross-hatch marks to re-seat the rings........ you could hone the cylinders but maybe you would need pistons idk
I think he'd get away with just cleaning up the pistons, re gapping or maybe new rings!
Gupham I think so too with the new cylinders just clean the pistons and put new rings should be fine
true, it all depends on how bad the rust is and if its started to get pitted I guess
SSER - Stittsville Small Engine Repair this is true
worst case if it doesn't hone out nice enough just replace the jugs.... yes?
Don't worry, no motorcycle enthusiasts are concerned about a gs haha
ill be fine!! but take youre time cuz then you dont mess up and ask for help it makes it alot easy,er to get the work done. Google is one good way too
Hooning cilinders and oversized rings could work
& too some like me that are good with are hands none of us know wth we are doing😂 but it always works out if YOU ARE GOOD WITH YOUR HANDS💯
Dude it's not the bad let the valves soak in Apple chider vinegar for 3 days and dingle ball hone the cylinder wall clean the carbs and it should be good to go
انا متابعك من سوريا صح ما نفهم شي من حكيك بس تعلمت كتير شقلاا منك
awesome
it all can be rehond and cleaned up I do it all the time
Craigslist can be good too!!
5:50 leaking milky substance(water and oil) instant sign that there is water damage
"...i broke my back... spinal!" 😀
u could also put a lil oil in tge sylinder if it has rust If I were u Id keep the same pistons replace the rings and take a wire bush and some wd40 to the silender
Man, I’ve lost so many 10mm sockets. I swear I buy 2 or 3 every time I go to Home Depot, Lowe’s or any auto parts store.
good
You got that cylinder for so cheep because it scored on the inside people so those for really cheap so people can bore them out it's probably going to be messed up
youer gonna need two jugs pistions and rings for sure if the crank bearrings are not shot
Don´t complain and be negative all the time, it´s rather annoing! Just do your thing.
Just hone it and clean up the piston in and rings or hone it like 5 under and buy a new piston. You shouldn't need a bore
the numbers just say 487 centimeters cubed, or 487 cubic centimeters or cc as we know.
there are your wheels and tires for the mini motorcycle
hone the cylinder out clen the pistons up and put it back together
