Great discussion Raf, of a great book. I recently discussed this with some friends and some of us felt that this book was not successful if it wanted to make readers feel their place in the universe, because the epiphany that Leigh experiences doesn't translate well over the pages to the reader. But I don't think that that detracted from the novel. I was impressed with the way he handled Leigh’s character, and the tone and pacing of the narrative, and I was impressed with the conundrum of the loops in the story. Most of all, I was emotionally affected by the way the two siblings experienced their childhoods differently. The novel was a self-contained whole, a portrait. For the political angles about climate change, I think other writers such as Kim Stanley Robinson take a more effective approach.

Great discussion as always! This is one I wouldn’t have picked up without your recommendation, and I’m so glad I did. For one thing, algae!!!!!
It’s tough to gather specific thoughts to share here… I also saw myself in Leah’s relationship with her mom, and (fortunately to a lesser extent) with the specter of her father. The ways we can and can’t pick and choose what we take away from our childhoods and our parents.
The first section with the dive, although in the moment I was bummed to be leaving the ocean behind. The hard soft-science parts like considering the impact of Growing A Plant on your mental health when you’re in space. Leah’s stay with her mother as an adult, not knowing how to interact with each other. Great stuff, really impacted me.
