    This is a great video with excellent information. This is the method I'm planning on using next year. I saw a guy that ties his aider to himself with a length of paracord as a safety fail safe. I kind of like that idea. Great point about the value of a stick with opposite steps. I was wondering about that.Thanks!

    Great video Gregg but like some others I have reservations about coming down in the dark as well. I plan on using the aider to climb and then lower myself down using a Madrock Safeguard belay device after dark. This does require carrying in more rope but I feel it's worth it for the ease of getting down at the end of the hunt. Also, another source of awesome climbing sticks is Eastern Woods Outdoors, Dan's sticks are top-notch and the quality is amazing. I appreciate you taking the time to make the video and share it with everyone! Thanks

    Thanks for the video Greg... Great Demo... I will say this for the guys who aren’t the most savvy climbers... maybe leave this style to the more agile guys... If you drop your linemen belt too low while doing an adjustment and/or loose your toe hold on the tree your foot in the aider kicks out, your top heavy body wants to flip and the only thing keeping you upright is your arm strength and hands gripping onto something! It’s probably one of the more difficult climbing styles... I tried and gave it up! And I climb for a living as a lineman! Sticks are better then wild edge steps as it gives you more to hold onto as you keep going up the aider... if you can do chin up’s you will probably be fine, but if you cant lift your weight up with your arms you will let go at some point and then the linemen belt needs to catch to stop your fall.

    After watching and trying various methods of tree climbing i can honestly say the way you do it with the way you have your equipment set up is litterally the best and the safest for me. it is a learning curve but when you have it all worked out and are happy with it man its just GRAVY!!!!
    thank you for all your vids your help and your time for sharing all your knowledge.
    i still use a sitdrag which i made watching your vids and i must say cutting down the heliums helped but the one thing that made things sucky was the aider length i had it a little too long which made me struggle with my last step onto the climbing stick once i fixed this then things began to roll!!!!

    Good vid...I have been thinking of switching to a saddle from a climber. Getting old, lazier and less flexible (among other things). My main concern is climbing down in the dark with big winter boots trying to get my toes in the aider as well as dropping the darn thing.
    I suppose you could possibly hang down and reach you next stick, with some difficulty, if you absolutely had to,

    I use 3 beast sticks, and a Yates speed wall aider can get top of 3rd stick at 23 feet. I attach a piece of sting to the aider and tie it off on leg strap,and move up with me as o go. As for coming down in the dark it is not a problem.

  • @weightdude
    @weightdude 4 роки тому +1

    I tried the aider 2nd step up from the ground and since my legs are short that put me only about 5 feet up... thank god...THE KEY LESSON IS BURY TOE, AND USE LINEMAN BELT...I failed to bury the toe into the tree....right foot proceeded to swing right, my body left along with left foot in first step of the aider...i spun around lineman belt as it was the perfect axis....left shoulder smacked the deck at about Mach 3.....
    thankfully only thing hurt was my pride and yep I was sore for about 3 days....good concept but I learned it wasn't for me....I'm able to haul another Helium stick to make up for the distance that aider offered just fine...
    id recommend if your inclined to try this....definitely give this a try in the daylight and amongst friends...

  • @ridermak4111
    @ridermak4111 4 роки тому +5

    Great minimal, fast setup. Why do you keep saying, “don’t drop your aider”.
    Since it always needs to be within reach, tether it to yourself so you can’t drop it.
    I kept hearing stories about responsible adult riders of 20-30k$ touring bikes losing their keyless fob. They aren’t cheap and the spare one is at home.
    With a piece of Kevlar string, I loop locked mine to my belt. Problem solved very simply. I’ve become a firm believer in prevention and my hunting buds would NEVER let me live it down if I got stuck in my own tree in that fashion.

    I'm really fascinated with this type of hunting. I think it brings a whole new dimension to hunting. My question is, how do you get your bow in the tree and all your gear? And where do you put your gear when your waiting patiently for an animal? Also, can you hunt with a rifle when saddle hunting?

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  4 роки тому +1

      I leave my bow on the ground with a piece of paracord tied to it. Once I get setup in the tree, I pull up my bow. It's pretty easy actually. I use an accessory strap on the tree. ua-cam.com/video/tiylFEa3eck/v-deo.html I made mine, but if you don't want to make it, you can buy one from Tethrd. I hunt with a rifle and have zero issues. I have used that aider only on the bottom stick for a year. I leave it perminantly attached. It is funky as a monkey coming back down. My leg slipped through the loop and I was pinned to the tree by my lineman belt with my leg through the aider. I looked like a can of biscuits strapped to a tree. What's more it's useless on a leaning or nominal tree. Maybe if you have a level of athleticism I don't have it would work but I obviously don't have it. I am going to add one stick this year and delete the aider it's worth the weight.

      You should make a video demonstrating your concerns. Id be interested in knowing all the ways i could possibly lower myself from a tree..... "worse case scenarios". Anyone could drop an aider, or a stick.... I know I've dropped binos, range finder, walkie-talkie, and a multitude of other things over the 50 years I've been hunting. My first tree stand was a tree with a very large branch sticking straight out that my dad boosted me up in. So uncomfortable. But I stayed in it until he came back for me. Back then it wasn't required for an adult to remain with a youth hunter. Nor was flo orange a requirement. Sorry got off track. Safety should always be a concern when elevated. And the more knowledge we have the more likely someone won't have to come looking for us or what's left of us....

      Anything that you can’t risk dropping, you tether it to yourself. Not with a clip, hook, or mini biner. Loop lock it to your belt so it cannot fall. Prevention is gold.
      Oh, and about that darkness thing. Almost anywhere you can by a tiny little
      FLOODlight that straps to your forehead
      and any hunter that doesn’t have one to keep hands free for safety and utilitarian reasons, deserves to fall down in the woods.

    As an exclusively mobile hunter, the main benefit I can see to saddle hunting is versatility. I can't put a climber in just any tree. So it's a little intriguing to me. But I dont get the growing trend of trying to climb a tree with straps. Why not just carry a set of ultra light modern sticks. No disrespect to anyones process, a legitimate question I'm curious about?

    So, the only reason I am interested in this system is to get into trees that are no good for a climber. Where are the demos for large, odd, or branchy trees? All the videos I see are on perfect trees that are pointless to use a saddle or lock-on to get into.

      This! Every single saddle climbing video on UA-cam shows a perfectly straight tree with no branches that would be climbed in 45 seconds with a Lone Wolf hand climber. If the main benefit of this saddle method is “works in any tree” - show me that it works in any tree, not just the perfect trees for a climber.

    It would be nice to see someone bring their bow gun up and all their gear. No one ever shows that.

      I love how guys that have never tried something are experts. I've used aiders for years in the rain, snow, ice, and heat. They're perfectly fine.
