  • This is a continuation of a "basics" on saddle hunting. Many people new to saddle hunting do not know what aiders are or the basics on how to safely use them. A linesman belt is a MUST. And there is no shame in backing your climb up with a tether also. You the viewer must take responsibility for your safety. Climbing to an elevated position to hunt is inherently dangerous. This is simply how I climb. You climb in a way that you feel safest.

    Love all your videos. My really first year hunting with a saddle. I hunt with trad gear so lots of practice this summer. I’m going to add the Bullman platform ring of steps to see if I can shoot my recurve bow from them I have the platform as well. I went with the overwatch outdoors saddle it’s very comfortable. Thanks for sharing

    This will be my first season Saddle Hunt thing but I really appreciate this video I’m convinced that for me using a tether and repelling down will be the way to go it’s one thing going up with an aider, down look sketchy Especially in the dark and cold conditions thanks again

    Great Aider instructional video. Hope you don’t mind but we shared it on our Facebook page along with a couple other groups.

    I've found that three 20" steps with a single aider gets me as high as I need to in the thick, high stem count stuff I hunt in south Georgia. I'm still using cheap Hawk Helium mini sticks. Last year I made a single step rope aider for each step and I didn't like how hard it was to get my foot into it climbing down. This year I'm using a moveable aider that cinches around my boot and has an amsteel loop I put over the versa button. So far I like it a lot! I know my foot is in it, and all I have to work about it getting that loop onto the button.
    What I'd really like to see is more innovation in a climber style platform for saddle hunting. Barren Ridge makes one, but I'm a bit hesitant to try it. I like how stable my current platform is and I don't think the climber would handle side loads well. Single sticking is another option I haven't tried yet.

      Do you have a video or link for the cinching aider? That sounds like exactly what I was thinking about, but haven’t been able to find a reasonable method yet. Thanks!

    Would have liked to see getting down on the two step portion. I am 6'2, size 14 shoe, and 45 so not nimble either. I bought the 3 step Ultimaider and quickly took it apart and only use as a one step because it was difficulty getting my feet into the aiders securely when it was more than one.
    Thanks for the video.

      Same principle as stepping down the single step. But yeah I agree the more steps the dicier it can get. That is why I only do a 2 step aider on my first stick.

    I use the Tethrd Skeletor sticks. 4 of them. I use an aider on the bottom step. Mine is made out of amsteel with rubber hose over the feet steps. Mine is a double step. THE BIGGEST ISSUE is exactly what you showed. You MUST wear stiff toed boots or it hurts your foot when it rams it into the tree. I don't use aiders above the first step I simply do not like how much they move around and wearing hunting gear and in the early dawn or late dusk it is an accident waiting to happen for me. I like the height they give me. I hate how sloppy and etc they are. i use them, but to do it all over I probably would not buy them again. I am 6'1" and athletic and in great shape climbing trees is NO issue.

    Why do you only use one step aider? Instead of a two step eater there must be a reason

      Because it is what I like. More steps the sketchier it can get. I use 2 sometimes. But I don't like using 3. It is all personal preference.

    Why not just get a gri gri and rappel down

    • @NewDayOutdoors
      @NewDayOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      That is certainly an option ... and one that I do ... I recently did a video comparing the basics of stick climbing, one sticking, and a hybrid approach ... the last two involve rappelling. The reason it is not mentioned in this video is that I produce these as kind of 101 and 102 level videos to help take the intimidation out of mobile hunting for people. So many people get confused and intimidated when they watch others go too deep on topics.
