There's a version of this where the camera is only on Mike Portnoy, there was a part earlier where he tried to toss his sticks but he fails to catch it but he just continued on like nothing happened. So seeing him toss it again later and actually catching it is amazing.
He also messes up a little cymbal part but it’s barely noticeable. They know this music, they made this music so SOMETHING is bound to happen but all in all it’s an absolute masterpiece retrospective
You guys mentioned the King Crimson influence.....the irony is that Tony Levin from King Crimson played with Jordan, Mike, and Petrucci in Liquid Tension Experiment... In which that one section with the "loony tunes" part was one of the songs on their first LTE album... Also...Metropolis Pt 1. Is on the album Images and Words which was a few albums before Metropolis Pt 2....
Dream Theater has been around since 88. Only 3 of the founding memebers went to Berjlkley. Petrucci, Myung the bassist and Portnoy. All 3 are from Long Island and they are very much a Long Island band. Most if not all of them live on Long Island. Myung and Petrucci were HS buddies. They first met Portnoy, who grew up about 90 minutes west of them on Long Island at Berkely. The singer Lebrie, joined them after the first album. Rudess is there 3rd keyboardist and joined them around 98. He went to Juliard. They are still very much active and one of their songs from their last album won agrammy about 3 years ago. Portnoy just announced he has rejoined them this year. He left about 2010.
Trust me they’re enjoying themselves they eat this stuff for dinner. This is really just jamming and having fun and putting on a show. They’re all pretty relaxed…they’ve already written this music and they obviously practiced this ahead of time. This is just fun for them, the only stress would be just memorizing the order and changes. The playing is easy enough for them though. But this was also a BIG show for them to perform plus it’s being shot for a DVD as well
Cool coincidence @ 13:20, you mention King Crimson, as they play a couple of non-DT songs from a side project with Tony Levin, King Crimson bassist (Liquid Tension Experiment w/ Levin, Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess).
Holy Cow-my ears couldn’t keep up with what I was hearing!!! This is amazing. So, if they did this 20 years ago, could they do it today? I will listen to this again because I found it interesting and energetic. And the drummer-how many toms do you need? Wow, again I wouldn’t know which one to hit next! Great reaction today. You should check out at least a couple more to see whether or not you want to pursue this music. That is what I do on your channel! Later 🎶 Cyd
I saw them playing the whole "Dance of Eternity" (most of this medley is from that song) and other incredible ones such as "Fatal Tragedy" and "Beyond This Life" and "Finally Free" from the same album (Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory). It was a tour they did in 2019/2020 and they are as good and incredible as back then. The best musicians to ever exist ❤
Metropolis pt 1 is a song from Images and Words (it's regarded as the song that created the Prog Metal genre itself!). A lot of these parts were from that and from Dance of Eternity, on Metropolis pt 2, considered the most difficult song ever in the whole genre. And YES, listen metropolis pt 2 fullllly! Reading the lyrics. Its a journey, basically a movie itself. Your wife will love it too
The song at 13:00 is "Paradigm Shift" from the Supergroup "Liquid Tension Experiment", comprised of John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy & Jordan Rudess (keys) of Dream Theater and Tony Levin of King Crimson...so, there is your KC reference!!! Here's the live track of the referenced song: ua-cam.com/video/Vi2IQNs8hlE/v-deo.html
I hear Scenes from a Memory part 2... That is almost right. the official title of the album is [Metropolis part 2: Scenes from a memory]. Just a tiny correction. GLad you two loved it. Been listening to Dream Theater for 20 years now and it is just so extremely good!
Regarding that fish on the side of the keys, as far as I remember, some Japanese fan gave this sticker (or magnet) to one of the band members (Mike Portnoy, I think), and then apparently he handed it to Rudess and Jordan attached it to his keyboard before the show just for fun. That's it. So the fish doesn't have any special meaning, but it has become quite famous among DT fans.
I think the song you thought was Monty Python is more likely a nod to "Heart and Soul" which everybody learns the simple version of on the piano as a kid.
Now watch to When the Water Breaks from Liquid Tension Experiment (their instrumental side project), but watch the live from LA 2008 video! For more instrumental DT, try Erotomania, stream of consciousness, dance of eternity, enigma machine, ytse jam. I think thats all major ones.
Yes, you DEFINITELY should check Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory from front to back. Although you should maybe release the songs separate (maybe two per video). It tends to do really low in view numbers when it's a whole video checking the whole album.
That actually is a military march music. Entrance of the Gladiators by Julius Fučík. But yeah, people always refer it as a circus music. Including soundguys 😂
Dream Theater formed in the 80s and released their first studio in 1989, though that was with a different lead singer (Charlie Dominici, who sadly passed away last November). James Labrie took over as lead singer on Images & Words in 1992 and that's when they broke out. The best way to describe Dream Theater is Metallica's heavy nature + Iron Maiden vocals + Rush technical ability. Scenes From A Memory is a great place to start as that was Jordan's first album with the band and features a fair amount of classical piano bits. The story is incredible, though can be a tad difficult to follow without detailed lyrics as there's 5 characters that the POV shifts between. The Scenes From New York live show from 2000 also features some video segments to help reinforce the story. (ua-cam.com/video/7BqbZ5Etv40/v-deo.html).
nah. the instrumedley is a compilation of many instrumental parts from their various songs (and also from Liquid Tension Experiment which is a side project for Petrucci, Portony, Rudess and bassist Tony Levin). The medley goes in this order: Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory) Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words) Erotomania (Awake) Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory) Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words) A Change of Seasons: IV. The Darkest of Winters (A Change of Seasons) Ytse Jam (When Dream and Day Unite) Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory) Paradigm Shift (Liquid Tension Experiment) Universal Mind (Liquid Tension Experiment) Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory) Hell's Kitchen (Falling Into Infinity)
I meant to comment on the Jordan reaction, but got sidetracked. I'm so glad you were able to listen to this monumental Band, that's been around since 1985. So where do you go from here? Obviously your friend was quite familiar with DT. He would probably be your best guide. Here's some links to some of my favs. I've listened to DT since 1995, and have never strayed. It's hard to get away from perfection. Where do you go?. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (Live at New York, 2000) (UHD 4K) ua-cam.com/video/cLXEVvVs82I/v-deo.htmlsi=z-REe2ya7C3mzpEO .... LaBrie can be a mixed bag, some stuff he's great in, and other times his voice is just not suited for the music. The earlier stuff of Dream Theater has the best of Labrie. The later stuff, it gets meh, but he still has some that go ok with the music. Scenes from a Memory is definitely their pinnacle album and it's Rudess's first album with DT.
Scenes from a memory PT2 is the greatest album. You literally don't need anything for your musical education except this. Vocals in DT were always shit. Sorry me, but it's the one thing that have not made this band the best band ever. Pay attention to musicians too. Speed is nothing for them - they use it as a tool and whole DT music is....very musical!. Lot's of nuances and intonations, dynamics and such. Very very very musical band.
Bassist! Myung is the bigger beast in this show. The endurance of that man is beyond.
2:21 the dance of eternity (metropolis pt 2)
3:49 metropolis pt 1
4:15 erotomania
7:25 back to metropolis pt2
8:10 back to metropolis pt 1
9:07 a change of seasons
9:57 the ystse jam
12:17 once again back to metropolis pt 2
13:02 Paradigm Shift from liquid tension experiment
14:04 universal mind from liquid tension experiment
15:03 back to metropolis pt2
15:45 hell's kitchen
Whoa. You picked the #1 sample from Dream Theater.
Congrats of your fantastic taste in music.
On the dvd there's a camera angle on each musician (and one on the drummer) to choose from. Good stuff.

Really like to watch people reacting to Dream Theater.
This was a great reaction thanks for the video and I'm looking forward for more DT reactions!
Love how you mentioned “Blotted Science” not many know of that band
Most insane band ever, Ron is a fucking maniac. What a guitarist.
... seemed like he could have said Spastik Ink as well...
The “first” album ‘Images and Words’ track 5 is Metropolis Part 1 (absolutely need to take a listen 🔥🔥🔥)
If you want instrumentals, check out the Liquid Tension Experiment albums. Lineup is Mike Portnoy, John Peteucci, Tony Levin and Jordan Rudess
It's not that you can't be in the moment. Remembering there parts , and hitting parts together just their continuity . Love you guys.
Trust me they’re enjoying themselves they eat this stuff for dinner. This is really just jamming and having fun and putting on a show. Yeahh, agree to do that, Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes from memories ,, whole album
After this song it goes right into Trial of Tears, one of John Myung's songs (one if my favorites).
Myung is crazy
18:30 Metropolis part 1 is a song. They based a whole album on a song they had that was a fan favorite. You're welcome 😅😁
Thank you. 😊
Holy Cow-my ears couldn’t keep up with what I was hearing!!! This is amazing. So, if they did this 20 years ago, could they do it today? This whole show is amazing. Almost 3 hours of this
I saw them playing the whole "Dance of Eternity" (most of this medley is from that song) and other incredible ones such as "Fatal Tragedy" and "Beyond This Life" and "Finally Free" from the same album (Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory). Yes
They're still playing those songs, maybe better than ever.
14:35 It's called "Heart and Soul". Super famous 😁
One of my favorites!
Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany, and The Illumination Theory will be 🔥🔥
Metropolis pt 1 is a song from Images and Words (it's regarded as the song that created the Prog Metal genre itself!). Black Clouds and Silver Linings has a full instrumental version of the CD. Phenomenal.
They should do that with every album, so we can avoid that goose singer
Love this band
They formed 1985, first album 1989, but hit with 2nd album in 1992 with Pull me under
Train of thought is the album that needs a listen boys
They are your
Favorite band’s
Favorite band!!😎
Continue your journey
With DT Young men…🤘

Scenes from a memory Part 1 is Called Metropolis Part 1
The drum kit is called The Siamese Monster
if you want to listen to them jam, there is a track on Liquid Tension Experiment 1 called 3 minute warning
Great reaction.
Thank you! S glad you enjoyed it!

i recomend the documental from they searching for a new drummer when portnoy decided to out! its called "take this for the pain"
That actually is a military march music.
Entrance of the Gladiators by Julius Fučík.
But yeah, people always refer it as a circus music.
Including soundguys 😂
It's 13 songs in twelve and a half minutes!
Gentlemen, please allow me to prescribe «Rondo of Nightmare» from Baby Metal's Kami Band instrumental introduction, to try and curb your ailment.
If you like instrumental you should check change of seasons
This is my favourite instrumental from any artist, Dream theater are above any other band, check out GLASS PRISON and you will see why ❤

you should check out Areon ,,, The day that the earth breaks down , is a good start !!!!
I believe Instrumedley became Dance of Eternity later
It's the other way around.
nah. the instrumedley is a compilation of many instrumental parts from their various songs (and also from Liquid Tension Experiment which is a side project for Petrucci, Portony, Rudess and bassist Tony Levin).
The medley goes in this order:
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words)
Erotomania (Awake)
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words)
A Change of Seasons: IV. The Darkest of Winters (A Change of Seasons)

Buddy Rich had and still has the fastest hands. Check out Liquid Tension Experiment: Portnoy, Rudess, Petrucci,, and Tony Levin
fish maybe is holding the camera?

DT= Rush, Yes, Metallica and caffeine.
Too bad you didn't watch the multicam version. But its great anyways
Bro judas priest guitarists are way more skilled than maiden...painkiller is literally one of the best metal guitar solos.
Scenes from a memory PT2 is the greatest album. You literally don't need anything for your musical education except this.

There is to much talking while the music is playing we can’t hear the music over your conversations good thing I know the song but some might not
Thanks, Derek. It's a fine balance and we don't always get it right. Appreciate you giving us a shot!!
It's a reaction dude, if you want to hear the song without a reaction, go watch the original.
