Any tip size works but something smaller is better because PVA is like water. If you have a larger tip just turn the material flow way down and bump up the pressure on the gun. The key is to do very light mist coats letting the first coat tack up.
I appreciate your efforts to put these tutorials out there for everyone else. Other than cost, are there any other reasons for using polyester based resin instead of epoxy resin for this type of application?
None of my molds have a recess for hinges because each customer is using different hinges in their boat. You could easily add hinge recess just by adding blocks of HDPE in the spaces you want the hinge to be located.
It depends on the customers boat. Most of the time I am only making the part and the customer is handling the final finishing. If the lid needed to match a non-skid texture I would have needed to add the texture into the mold before I sprayed the gelcoat.
Paint thickness is measured in mils. Also plastic sheeting and garbage bags are also measured in mils. Go to Home Depot and buy some plastic sheeting. They come in different mil thickness such as 4mil 6mil etc.
@@boatcrafterscollective oh okay so a milli inch, gotcha. To my knowledge film thickness is measured in microns but I guess murica will be murica. Thanks for the insight though. Cheers!
I don’t make the rules mate. But I’d imagine it’s easier to discuss paint thickness as 4mil as opposed to 101.6 microns. But what do I know about shit. Just a lowly Murican over here.
Yeah gear. Means the materials . In Scotland, gear can mean anything used , or a commodity, they can even say gear to describe drugs. " he is taking gear"
Love it, keep putting out these vids of how you make your molds. Nothing else out there like this right now
Thanks. This is what I do daily so I have a lot of content for it, but they don't seem to get the most views...haha.
Thank you, I appreciate your time and talent!
Thanks!
Thank you !
Great video Russ! Even though I do this crap everyday, still enjoy watching and learning from others!🤙🏻
Thanks man. Appreciated.
@@boatcrafterscollective yes sir!🤙🏻
Great video. Was thinking about how to build a mold for a guitar case project. This was very helpful for ideas, thanks a lot
👍 another great video
Thank you. Great help for my build
Thanks.
hi my friend, what is that sign that you put in the minute 11:23? what material is this and what is it for?
rectangular plate in 11:23 ? What is It?
It’s honeycomb coring material. It give the lid strength.
I love this. Great video Russ. Thank you. What size spray tip are you using for the PVA?
Any tip size works but something smaller is better because PVA is like water.
If you have a larger tip just turn the material flow way down and bump up the pressure on the gun. The key is to do very light mist coats letting the first coat tack up.
I love your videos. Could you use caulk or silicone to make the radius instead of clay? Thanks.
Yes but it’s not as easy to shape.
I appreciate your efforts to put these tutorials out there for everyone else. Other than cost, are there any other reasons for using polyester based resin instead of epoxy resin for this type of application?
Epoxies and gelcoats don’t play well together. For something like this epoxy simply isn’t required.
20-25mm thick gelcoat? Did I hear that right at 7:32?
20-25 MILS. Not millimeters.
Love these hatch vids! Do you have any vids where you show how to do recessed hinges in the hatch and receiver?
None of my molds have a recess for hinges because each customer is using different hinges in their boat. You could easily add hinge recess just by adding blocks of HDPE in the spaces you want the hinge to be located.
That material you held down with the cinder blocks. What was it?
Can you use the yard sign material you can buy at a big box store.
Thank you
It’s a honeycomb coring material. No…gator board will not work because the resin won’t bond to the plastic.
@@boatcrafterscollective where can you buy that board? Thank you
Marine supply stores
can you explain why you first put the release wax then put the PVA mould release? I don't know a lot about this process.
That’s just the order it goes.
@@boatcrafterscollective so they are both mould release products?
@Riderdownn yes
How strong is the lid with the 3/8 honey comb? Strong enough to walk on as a deck hatch?
Yes. Plenty strong enough with 1708 on each side
where do you buy the 3/8" honeycomb core material to strengthen the hatch lid?
Fiberglass Coatings Inc.
Hi Russ, how could you make a mold, without a sample and rounded, for the front of a camper?
Mold for what ?
@@boatcrafterscollective for an rv compartment door... its rounded vertically and horizontally. I can't seem to attach photos :(
It’s sounds complicated. email me photos and I’ll try to help. russ@backyardboatworks.com
One of the best tutorial I've never see, Thanks a lot! About the antiskid, do you use a pattern or antiskid paint?
It depends on the customers boat. Most of the time I am only making the part and the customer is handling the final finishing. If the lid needed to match a non-skid texture I would have needed to add the texture into the mold before I sprayed the gelcoat.
Can you use awlcraft instead of gelcoat to make a mold?
No
How much charge for something like that.
Depends on the lid. But my standard rate is $75/hr plus materials
What’s the name of the song at the end?
It’s a song I purchased from a royalty free website.
pro tip. use glazing compound instead of modeling clay. its far cheaper and easier to work with
“Pro tip” lol 🫡
a template of a template?
Do you have a question?
25 mill thickness? I guess you mean 0.25 mill unless this is some sort of imperial unit I'm unaware of
Paint thickness is measured in mils. Also plastic sheeting and garbage bags are also measured in mils. Go to Home Depot and buy some plastic sheeting. They come in different mil thickness such as 4mil 6mil etc.
1mil = 1/1000 of an inch.
@@boatcrafterscollective oh okay so a milli inch, gotcha. To my knowledge film thickness is measured in microns but I guess murica will be murica. Thanks for the insight though. Cheers!

In 2023 labor rate for this kind of work is probably $600 an hour
Nice vid. Great for making stuff but this gear is most horrible to work with and clean up.
Gear ??
Yeah gear. Means the materials . In Scotland, gear can mean anything used , or a commodity, they can even say gear to describe drugs. " he is taking gear"
@alexbowie6316 what other “gear” are ya gonna use ?
@@boatcrafterscollective Do you disagree with my opening comment?
@alexbowie6316 I don’t understand the comment. If you don’t like working with resin this isn’t for you.
$3,000 for this
