Synesthesia: The Science Behind Seeing Sounds & Tasting Color

  • Synesthesia is a rare neurological condition where someone’s senses become entangled. What’s it like to see sound and taste color?
    Read More:
    The Synesthesia Project
    www.bu.edu/syne...
“At its simplest level, synesthesia means that when a certain sense or part of a sense is activated, another unrelated sense or part of a sense is activated concurrently. For example, when someone hears a sound, he or she immediately sees a color or shape in his or her ‘mind's eye.’"
Prevalence of Learned Grapheme-Color Pairings in a Large Online Sample of Synesthetes
    journals.plos.o...
“Learning has also been shown to play a role in other types of synesthesia such as word-taste synesthesia, and most types of synesthesia involve culturally learned sequences such as letters, numbers, dates, and pitches. However, there are reasons to be cautious about extrapolating from our result to the claim that synesthetic correspondences in general can be or are often learned from external stimuli.”

I have color- number synesthesia; as a child I had a book that dedicated a page to each number and the number was decorated mostly with 1 color. I'm not sure that I'm recalling all of them 100% correctly, however I still have it, for me 1 is black, 2 is blue, 3 is orange, 4 is green, 5 is red, 6 is white, 7 is pink, 8 is purple. and 9 is yellow, 0 is clear/no color

I only had a single episode of this in my life and it was the most wonderful few seconds I have experienced. It happened back when I was still young enough that my parents felt I needed a baby sitter (I am embarrassed to say they didn’t relent until I was in my teens) so I would guess ten or so. The entire event happened while the sitter was reading me a bedtime story but her voice was getting further away and indistinct, fuzzy like a radio being turned to static. I looked at her alarmed and then I saw the most amazing thing - her mouth was moving but colorful shapes like bits of glass in odd geometries were popping like sparks around her head and mouth. I felt the most relaxed and at peace as I ever have and I wish I could relive or recreate that night. It stopped suddenly when I realized how strange the situation was and tried to get the babysitters attention. If I knew then that doing that would dispel such wondrous beauty I would have sat mute. I am in awe of those who get to experience this daily.

I remember it coming up when I was learning days of the week. Not all foods taste and some taste the same as others. To me jealous' taste makes sense. I think the only word that tastes like itself is carrot. Fortunately I love carrots.

As a Chinese, I guess some of my synesthesia is from superstitions of my culture. For example, we have a meaning for each numbers. For 6, 8 it's lucky and 4 is unlucky. I see personality for each number. For me, 4 is a timid person, 5 is a hardworking person and 6 is a active person... I also see color associate with each number. To me 1 is black,2 is yellow, 3 is red, 4 is lime green... Whenever I see a series of number, I feel the number is telling me some thing, like a whisper. Also It's a bit easier to remember a small number combination. Instead of remember the numbers, I remember by how the numbers make me feel, like how a certain group of people make me feel, since all the numbers are so lively to me.

I don't have the colour sound or taste thing but I involuntarily visualise time in my head like a sort of linear Circle type thing and depending on the month or day that it is I'm somewhere along the circle. I also associate random words with images for example the word 'Yawn' to me makes me think of a cartoon style bowl of mashed potato in a blue bowl on a green background.. Weird but idk if it's Synaesthesia

Yep... it reminds me of teenagers self diagnosing with say depression or them being iNsAnE. I don't understand why so many people suddenly think they're synthetes. It sort of weirdly developed when it comes down to me. It started off with letters, numbers, and words having their own colours, and only recently in the past 3 years I realised while listening to music or generally hearing sounds have their own colours (my voice is blue :D). And some colours make me taste things. I always thought the colourful words was normal since my dad has it, but my friends freaked out when I mentioned it to them. Our brains are so weird!
(Forgot to mention about thw tasting colours thing, I often avoid colours like pink in my art because it's sour... I don't know why)

When someone tells me a year, it's like there is a timeline in my brain of all the years. And two years might be right beside each other, but are significantly different in my opinion. Like 2014 is very different than 2015. I think it's like 2015 is recent and 2014 is not. I also picture numbers and months on a timeline, but none of the timelines are the same.

When I write then record music, I put them in order to most generally fit the rainbow i.e. roygbiv. So a song most generally identified as red would be ahead of one that generally had more orange or yellow. I think it's a good and easy way to decide on song ordering for an album. In fact, I often title songs initially on the colour they invoke. Don't get me started on numbers.

I only just recently started to think about my synesthesia, because I often assumed that most or all people knew what it was like to taste words or sounds. But at the same time, I was scared to ask anybody whether they did or not, in case my assumption was wrong. One day, I finally mentioned it to a friend while we were chatting on messenger. But when I described examples of non-food words like "equipment", and how it tastes like cold water running down my throat, he failed to give a response on it 😕😶.

I don’t really see sounds, it’s the feeling it gives you and the feeling is usually a color, so you’ll end up seeing the sounds color or the voice, the most color I’ve seen in a voice is pink, all my family’s voice is pink and mine is green, I subconsciously am more attached to ppl that has a blueish cyan voice

so this explains why i connected colors to days of the week when i was little. weird thing is that in the 3 languages i speak every day has a different color. like monday is yellow in english, white in dutch and blue in french to me. this is getting confusing. but appearantly multilinguals adapt to a different personality for every language? so i guess that's how you could explain this. very interesting stuff, great vid Trace. keep up the good work, all of you.

I had an experience today. Not sure if it is synesthesia or not. I was getting a massage and every time the therapist moved her hands or changed pressure, different colors would mix and swirl behind my closed eyes. When muscles relaxed, I saw blues, purples and dark pinks. When she worked on spots that were particularly tight, I saw white, yellows and oranges. As her fingers moved and applied pressure, the colors would move. I'm 46 and this is the first time I have experienced this (or at least that I was aware of).

I have two types of synesthesia. One is similar to the literary concept of personification. Inanimate objects seem to have an emotional aura and human-like actions.
The second one I have I don't know the name but when I hear sounds, I see a sort of pattern and if a song does not seem to fit the pattern, I get really agitated.

    • @DixieDee
      @DixieDee Рік тому

I do that as well. For example: Circles are comforting and reassuring. Squares are honest and logical. Triangles are somewhere between Circles and Squares. Rectangles border on being rebels. Trapezoids are full-blown rebels. I also give them colors. Circles are red, Squares are blue, Triangles are yellow, Rectangles are green and trapezoids are indigo or turquoise.
As far as "sounds-to-patterns", I see Triangular-like patterns when hearing fast fiddles. I see circular-like patterns when hearing slow violins. Electric guitar solos are something like you would see on an Oscilloscope, EKG monitor or a Seismograph.
And for anyone that is wondering, this is not in my physical eye. It is purely "associative"; thus, it's in my "mind's eye". It's an involuntary perception.

I'm from SF, and a synesthete. I see dates and time in a 3D type clock rollercoaster looking track with decades in different colors based on historical events or trends. I also taste a few words, and feel pain and discomfort from others. I feel and see music, trance, progressive, house and classical trigger it mostly. I thought everyone was like that until a few years ago when I started to point at things my friends couldn't see as if they understood my rollercoaster date track as well. They confirmed they don't see dates like I do and boom, now everyone knows.

People who are interested in synesthesia should probably be addressed about this too: Not all music-color synesthetes actually SEE the colors when they hear the sounds. People who do are called projectors, and they have a stronger neuronal connection to the V4 color thing. But there are also associators like me, who only see the color in their mind's eye. All my music notes/chords have colors, like C is purple, D is black, G is blue, etc., but I don't see them in any shape or form when I hear them. The color just exists, it's there. There are a lot more associators than projectors, but it's only projectors who are noticed because they're able to better explain their interpretation of vision being directly associated with sounds.

Once, in preschool, I remember seeing a chart on the wall that showed January-June on the left side, and July-December on the right side with a background of what it's like in each month (Christmas and snowy in December, Halloween and autumn in October, sunny and beach like in July etc etc)... so now any and every time I think of the months, which month it is, or counting out how many months till something or whatever, I visualize that very same chart.

I have synesthesia, I have the most common one, color-graphemic. I always thought everyone was like this, then I saw an interview with a famous singer in Iceland where he talked about his synesthesia. He described it just like mine. I turned to my mother and asked if this wasn't normal (I was around 10 at the time). And she said "no honey. This is not normal. But this makes you unique." I love my synesthesia. As a writer, it helps me to see letters and numbers in color. I also see them in form. (I can't draw the week here, if I could, I would): For me, the week is like this; "Monday is red, Tuesday is light-blue, Wednesday is light-pink, Thursday is light-green, Friday is brown, Saturday is yellow and Sunday is dark-green. When I think of the 70's I think of red. When I think of the 80's I think of purple. When I think of the 90's I think yellow, and so on.

      @beeperscreepers4263 5 років тому

Howdy. I don't think I have synesthesia, but I kind of see the week the same way you do, but a little different. I kind of see it in a chart, with monday on top and sunday at the bottom. Monday is orange, Tuesday purple, Wednesday yellow, thursday green, friday this bluish color, and Saturday and Sunday are weird grayish colors. Oddly enough, when I get to Friday through Sunday, my "chart" is no longer vertical. I can't really explain it, it just becomes horizontal, and it's like you're standing in front of it?

Im not sure if I do have Synesthesia. Im a high school band student in Indiana and I sing. Whenever I play/sing I experience... Well Im not sure how to explain it... But I see flashes of light and colors and feel a certain type of pleasure like euphoria. If I close my eyes during one of these "episodes" it is the most beautiful thing you could imagine... It may have something to do with a slightly high IQ (125). I am not bragging about this because I actually feel like a freak when I try to explain it, nobody understands it.

I have a rather mild version of it. I see certain colours in letters and numbers, but full worlds adapt the colour of the first letter. Sometimes a mix of the first and second letter. I've never been able to coordinate my memory with it, tho. They seem to be on very different paths. Music, however, is quite prominent. I don't see colours there, but in a way I can see how the music is structured. And like a picture in photoshop I can "zoom in" on a specific sound and focus on it. But again, I haven't figured out how to combine sound frequencies with what I see, so I've not been able to take full advantage of it.

I think so. Sound used to render my vision completely useless. I was literally blinded by some songs and I would see nothing but, solid grey light everywhere. I would consider that a very bad thing. Before music visualizers were a thing I could see multiple colors shapes and entire environments form when listening to music. I didn't have control over what I was able to see. With years of exposure and really trying to alter thos function I was able to overcome that form of synesthesia.
I apparently might have many kinds of synesthesia, but none are anywhere near as debilitating as the one that used to blind me.

Numbers, letters and names have colors, for example the name Maria is red and the number 3 is blue. Weekdays, months and years also have colors but they also come in forms. I don't think you develop this kind of thing. It just is. I always thought that everybody were like this until I saw an interview with a famous singer here in Iceland who also has this. To me it's just normal.

Although I don't physically see them when I read numbers or letters and I don't think of them strongly; it is more like as if it was a (very) weak dose of a psychedelic drug. Not sure if this is synesthesia but I thought I'd mention it!

my most intense synesthesia is people, words and numbers having colors. interestingly enough, seeing someone in real life, the thought idea of that someone and their name could all have a different color in my head. math gets confusing for me too because of my synesthesia. each number has a color and the equation therefore has a color and almost 90% of all my confusion in math is from just being overwhelmed and getting 'lost' in all the colors my brain tries to keep track of while doing the problem. but on the other hand, when it comes to spelling- my synesthesia actually saves my butt a lot because once the word has the right color, i know i've spelled it right.
also i can tell you that smelling certain smells definitely produces distinct colors for me. :DD

For what it's worth, the ancient Indian Vedic texts are considered as 'Sruti' or 'that, which is heard'(Wiki it for more details)... these were 'sounds & syllables' heard by practitioners of deep meditation, who were able to tap into the primordial energies of consciousness & reproduce them verbally, the texts we now know as the Vedas, which, by the way, were promulgated ONLY orally for thousands of years before being written down.
It might have sounded incredulous until this video, so thanks to the makers for exploring the (endless) possibilities of human perception.
..if you're still reading this, note that the most primordial of 'sounds', as per the Vedic culture, is 'OM'. Of course, it goes without saying, that the rest of the sounds make up the mathematically perfect & intriguing language, that is Sanskrit. Sanskrit has a construct like geometry in cymatics and can be digitalised.
Curious? To explore more, punch into Google, "Sanskrit the Digital Language Ajit Vada ka yil".

I remember events in my life like they were a symphonic score. For example, when I think of my great grandfather's funeral, I just don't think of 21 Gun Solute; but specifically in minor notes. When I walk down the street whenever I go out, I always sing a song because each step creates chords and notes.

    Incredibly interesting stuff.
Sometimes I’ll see an image and I can pick up a scent or a taste, so I can imagine it’d be like that but much more frequent.
With the sound related stuff, I couldn’t imagine how that could be, seeing colours or images to songs, picking up smells and tastes. Probably wouldn’t be fun if you liked a song but it smelt or tasted bad, but for some things, boy would that be an experience. Especially playing an instrument.
Wonder if some consider it a blessing or a curse.

I highly doubt that I have synesthesia but every time that I try to remember something like a word or an event I don't remember words or letters, I picture colors and shapes and emotions. For example, when try to remember a word for a test my brain pictures a shape and some colors although they are always blurred. If I try to remember something that happened to me I focus on the emotion that I felt instead of what actually happened and it makes it a lot easier to remember. I don't know if its normal or not since I don't really talk about it but I told my friend once and she thought it was interesting. I also have a pretty good memory because of this; I can recall things from long ago with great detail. Again, I doubt in have synesthesia but Trace mentioned something about assigning colors to words or letters and it reminded me of this

I had a right sided ischemic stroke in September 2004, and ever since, every sound I hear has an individual texture, smell and taste to me. ( Some sounds, also cause a sharp pain in my body too.) If the sound is coming from outside, the smell, texture and taste of the sound, can change depending on the weather and temperature. E.g: The sound of a Chinook helicopter. On a hot summer day I would smell freshly baked bread, taste scotch egg and feel coarse grain sand. But the same sound in winter, I would smell frying bacon, taste oranges and feel the texture of a cotton wool ball. Sometimes the sensations can change, depending upon my emotional state as well. (I was born with ADHD, and I suspect I'm a higher functioning autistic too, just to make everything more intresting! )

Everyone says I have synesthesia. I can hear something and see colors or scenes of some sort (i.e, of something sounds light I associate it with green and spring often times). But also, letters, numbers, and words have personalities. Like for me 7 is a lot stronger of a letter than 8 which is very timid and follows the other numbers in a nervous manner. 7 is a dingy yellow (like mixing the yellow and black marker as a kid) and 8 is a darker forest green. And certain words have certain fonts. Like the word "Specific" is in a very fancy cursive like Pacifico while "ace" is very blocky and whole. It's kind of cool really

for me, most songs are blue and another color, 1 is orangeish yellow, 2 is light purple, 3 is green. I have also been doing a test to see if synistisia can be developed on purpose. I started by thinking of a word, and equating it to a color, i would do this for a little bit each day. I think it is working because before, taste didn't work for me, it didn't trigger anything and nothing triggered it, now I can suddenly equate tastes to sight, and i wasn't even testing on that sense yet.

not sure if this counts but I sometime experience a movement sensation from sounds. it's not all sounds and only a hand full of them , but the same sound type will always give me the same experience. conversely I experience a sound in my head from some movement. it's generally from movement in a repetitive pattern. I always thought it was my brain hardwired from TV and cartoons since they generally associate movement and sound for and exaggerated comical effected. so is this synesthesia?

I see emotions as different waves and color. I thought it was normal until I was in college and we learned about different types of synesthesia.
