That "HORSES" joke makes me laugh so damn hard, even watching this again on the reupload. It's edited together so well
there's a clip going around Tumblr from the 60s show when they're in traffic. a kid sees the chipmunks and tells his mom, the mom says it's just those annoying chipmunks again, and Dave says "Alvin, you're disgraced me for the last time." it's legit one of the most savage things i've ever seen in my life
Link?
You’re the ONLY youtuber I know that is genuinely invested into the Alvin and the chipmunks lore like me, this franchise is actually so underrated it’s sad, I love the Alvin and the chipmunks franchise so much man! 😭🧡
💯💯💯💯💯
That’s exactly what I’m saying!
It's better than it being overrated
The Nickelodeon show's designs activate my fight or flight response. Massive uncanny valley even for a cartoon
lolololololol
Finally someone put that feeling into words
They look too human. It's fine with the Chipettes imo because they never really looked like Chipmunks. *BUT GIVING ALVIN HAIR IS JUST ihoersfdfhipsaojpfifoipjadjfodojipasojifoj[sa* Y'know.
@@MsDill66 Oh, like the designs of the Chimpunks in the 80s cartoon weren't too human looking! I have the same problem with the Chipmunks design in the 80s cartoon too.
@@mechtech220 the french planned it first.
This is great! I was Associate Producer on The Chips and I kept pushing hard to get Back To Alvin's Future made. I'm the one who voiced the three 60s munks. I have crazy stories about this and the Rockin Through the Decades special. Ross was a great guy to work for and I learned a lot from him. I love the old Chipmunks best though.
@トロール see IMDB
I must hear these Rockin through the decades stories- It was one of my favorites

No, it didn’t. It took, like, three months. 😂😂
Still remember that scene lol
@@ToonrificTariq I know but I love that joke even if it is overdone
@@ToonrificTariq We still gonna keep using your joke.
I remember when I saw that movie in theaters all the teeny boppers started balling. The rest of the audience were pissed lol.
Next you HAVE to talk about the evolution of the Chipette designs.
They weren’t in the original Chipmunks song or show. They didn’t get invented until the 80’s
William Walker Yes, but they have evolved from the 80s to the live action movies to the 2015 cartoon series
Rokenrol Bro 2019 I’d say there are still many differences between the 80s chippettes, 2000s movies, and cgi series. For one the eye colors, hair styles, and most of all the outfits. There are also some differences in their personalities. These are just off the top of my head, there’s probably more I missed out on. But yeah, obviously because the chipmunks have been around longer there aren’t as many differences but there’s enough for a video
Aki J true. I love the 80’s and 90’s cartoons. But I’ll also will have a love for the first live action Chipmunks movie too. It isn’t really as bad as people say. Especially since Reed from Criminal Minds plays the voice of Simon
🤔 wasn’t the female Alvin, named Brittany? I know someone somewhere said they changed her name around different times (cause they thought of her being sooo important 😏) but I swear one TV movie thing that included a hot air balloon as basically the only part I remember, DID have her named Brittany! ...😒 right?
In terms of the voice acting sounding weird during the 60s. After me and my brother watched the live action Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, we found some videos on UA-cam of people slowing down the chipmunks voices so that they sounded normal, and they talked EXACTLY like that. My guess is that in the 60s they were talking a little TOO slowly, so it ended up sounding weird and stunted.
i think they talked so slow so they wouldnt end up talking *too* fast when sped up.
i dont know the entire process of speeding the voice up back in the 60s. i do know that now, all you have to do is change the pitch, you dont need to speed it up
Calling Dave a sad white man is very accurate 😂

does anyone else notice how the “chipmunks at the movies” intro pre dates the star wars prequels by years but alvin’s still moving like young yoda? before this i don’t think tiny jedi ever did tiny flips while holding lightsabers.

I Think NAT!!
That "I love you too, boys." at the end punched me in the feels.
I swear these are some of the funniest and simultaneously most informative cartoon discussion videos ever.
I hear that all of the Alvin Show has been restored, and that they plan to put it all on DVD someday. Some people have theorized that they'll do it next year for their next anniversary.
I hope so!
Me too! I remember seeing it in reruns on Saturday mornings years ago.
Some Golden age cartoon veterans worked on the Alvin Show
I said it in the original upload, I’m saying again here:
Pause at 15:40 and look at how the gang is situated.
Simon’s hanging in the back, talking with Jeanette while Theodore just sits next to him, staring at the both of them like an awkward third wheel.
Meanwhile, Alvin is up front with both Brittany AND Eleanor chilling on both sides of the man, chatting to the both of them while they’re giving him “dat look”. Those three clearly got some plans for later on after the movie’s done.
I used to think that Simon was trying to kiss Jeanette but maybe they were just talking 😂
i aint even have to click the timestamp and i knew what you was talking about 💀
Alvin's like "we look weird?! Look at yo feet, did Rob Liefield design you?"
Serious question - how can we get the 80’s Alvin and the Chipmunks series released in full?? Who can we lobby??? I’m 35 and still willing to dust off a VCR to watch old episodes I taped 😂 Thanks for bringing attention to my favorite childhood show!! 🥰
I grew up with the chippy-boys.
This means a lot to me.
Thanks, my man.
i'm glad you mentioned those sing-along tapes, one of my earliest memories is of being in preschool and watching those while we had grape juice and crackers. good times, man...
I started watching you after the Baby Blues review hit my recommendations, so I didn't get a chance to see this after it got taken down. Really happy you're able to reupload it.
Welcome, hope you enjoy your time here!
Back in the Alvin show days, they had to speak VERY concisely and enunciate every syllable, due to how it had to sound when sped up. They didn;t have audio editing software back then, it was literally just speeding up the physical recording media.
Anybody remember the movie where they raced around the world in hot air balloons?
Cinematic Masterpiece.
"The Chipmunk Adventure" is the name you're looking for.
Thats still one of my favourite movies. Great soundtrack too.
That's the one I very faintly remember watching in 2002.
Man, you excelled this video!! I've been a huge fan of the chipmunks since childhood and always hoped for someone to discuss their catalogues in the tv series, whether Go to the movies, and the Rockin with the Chipmunk Special!!
I really appreciated the way you watched the Alvin Show to get a better understanding of not only the special but how much the Chipmunk legacy has progressed!
I am also not going to lie Ross Jr. and Janices dialogues got me teary eyed, just thank you for this and just you did an amazing job!!
Hopefully this doesn't get taken down either. I lean towards between the '87 movie design and the Universal designer during the '90's are my favorite.

Rewatching this again for like the fifth time lol. "7 seasons on Nickelodeon" sadly ended up not being the case. Despite having 7 seasons greenlit, ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks finished with only 5. It's unknown whether or not production on seasons 6 and 7 was ever started. But with the way season 5 ended it doesn't seem likely. The show's end was confirmed by Ross Jr. himself in an article that was released in December 2023 about the franchise's 65th anniversary. He mentions it in passing when talking about the things he and Janice have done with the franchise, saying "and a TV show, which we finished last year". (Production on season 5 would have ended sometime in early-mid 2022, with its last episode airing in December 2022 in France and Canada. Nickelodeon aired the final episode in March 2023) A real gut punch to the fandom.
There’s a ton I can say about how I just love your vids and the chill mood you set. I’ll shorten it to you have an awesome voice and you perfectly worded what always bugged me about the look of Rugrats I think between season 2 and 3? Where the designs didn’t change but they were designed like they wanted to move more (made worse by having seen them move more).
i am attracted to this mans voice and personality and ion even know what he looks like irl, his videos are always amazing and a beautiful ending as usual❤️, keep doing what your doing, i look forward to your videos
Same lol
Stop lying
Omg yes!! I love his voice ❤️❤️❤️
Say what you want about his audio, but Toon’s EDITING is A1. This brotha put on the Poetic Justice instrumental as he was going into talking about the poetic justice the simplicity The Alvin Show serves. That’s a editing trick that even Marvel lvl editors trip up on
This episode was a core memory for me. It felt like the chipmunks were doing the multiverse thing away before other stuff. Awesome vid fam you doin’ great stuff!
The cartoons and animated movies are better than the live action cash cows
Another hot take: water is wet.
@Jamar XD Never mentioned the nick show did I?
I actually enjoyed the live action movies 😶
I'll give the Nick show credit that they do try to make Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Chippettes look more like cartoony chimpmunks than the original series. When I look at the design of the Chipmunks and Chippettes from the 80s cartoons, I just don't get the allusion that they're chipmunks. They look more like kids with Chipmunk noses. I get what the animators were going for the original designs by adding some child traits to make them like children, but at the same time, they're supposed to be chipmunks. I feel like the original designs forget that because whenever any of the Chimpunks are interacting with human kids, they're literally the same size as them! I'm not saying anthropomorphic animals have to say 100% true to the biology of their real life counterpart. I do understand that animators do have to add things like ordinary eyes to make the animals be able to express emotions like a human being in order for the audience to better relate to them. But the designer should still remember that they're animals and put in some parts of the animal's body into the design. Like they could have added tails and shrunk them smaller so they'd look like chipmunks.
I grew up with the 80s version and I like the live action movies and the nick show lol
"Back to Alvin's Future" was what the VHS was called. I guess when their other parodies have names like "Batmunk" and "Robomunk", "Back to Our Future" isn't nearly as marketable.
I just love the original 60s Chipmunks. They've always stuck with me since I was little
No matter how many times you reupload this this is still one of your best videos
So lovely to see someone appreciate The Chipmunks so much uwu I love them and none of my peers really care about them.
I'm only 7 minutes in and I am CRYING!!!😂😂😂😭😭! I always love your segments, and this is my favorite so far. I watched Alvin and the Chipmunks in the 90s religiously!!
EDIT: I'm done and I'm ROLLING! Going to watch this one more time!
The chipmunk movie parodies were some of my favorite cartoons as a kid! Especially the Batman one.
I got love for every version. I just love the franchise period. Thanks for this upload Tariq. 🔥
I've seen most of The Alvin Show though I got a little excited seeing a couple clips I haven't seen yet. Still haven't watched season seven or eight of the 80s (surprised I haven't seen Back to our Future). I'm happy to see the appreciation for the 60s and the honest commentary. The characters have always had their ups and downs but very enjoyable overall.
that NPR interview clip had me sobbing!!! i always go into toonrifictariq videos thinking "theres no way im gonna cry over THIS property of all things" like some kind of video essay charlie brown football
You couldn’t be more right, they did want to move more.
Through the years they’ve grown not just style but in awareness. And that’s why they’re still around. Cartoons come and go but icons like the chipmunks live on as inspiration for the future.
Dude I never thought about the son singing with the father thing.
Thank you so much for this amazing video. 😊
I absolutely loved this video! My first ever exposure of the Chipmunks was the Ragtime Cowboy Joe Sing-Along VHS tape and I've loved the Chipmunks ever since! Surprised other content creators haven't done Alvin and the Chipmunks history videos like this but I'm glad somebody did! Great job, earned a like for sure!😉👌
They should have gotten Maurice LaMarche to play ‘60s Dave. He would have nailed it.
15:13 Do it! Nobody’s covering that Alvin cartoon on UA-cam. You’ll be doing old school Chipmunks fans a favor. 🙏🏿
Man they could do this again with the new show, it's been that long.
Damn we're all old
That would’ve been kinda neat to see.
Especially if they made the 2D animation as fluid as the openings.
I loved this video I’m glad it’s reuploaded
rewatching because i loved this video when it first went up, still a really good one.
YO! I had those sing-along tapes too. Always frustrated me as a kid when Alvin would show up at the end and say "if you want to see more, just press rewind!" cause I thought for some reason that would show new songs lol
It really sucks that this video got taken down. But screw it, I'm happy to give the new version a view and a like, because this was a damn good video. I was a kid when the '80s cartoon was on. I did see some of the original cartoon in reruns, but I don't think I've ever seen this crossover; it was really neat to see you analyze the meeting between the Chipmunks from before my time and the Chipmunks from slightly after my time.
Jeez, this ending theme is always a banger.

I'm still mad at the fox films only because of the trends they started seriously who asked for Smurfs marmaduke underdog or even beverly hill chihuahua who? Nobody
And clearly the guy who made all those Resident Evil movies didn't catch on that this trend is *dead* given how the Monster Hunter movie is turning out...

I went back to look for this video after I saw it the first time and when I couldn't find I thought I had just imagined it
So interesting to know other children were enjoying the same cartoons as myself. I would even watch dance scenes and certain transitions in slow motion:) just to admire the frames ^-^
I just started watching you earlier this year, and this was your first video I saw new. I was wowed by your ability to mine so much from the 60s show when I wouldn't have thought much of it on my own. I loved that everything you said - even things that seem like little tangents - came back together in the end. And I loved the heart that you found out of all of it, of a son building a legacy out of his love for and memories of his father. I was so bummed to see the video go down, but I figured it was just another tragic casualty of those unavoidable copyright strikes every critic's gotta deal with on this platform. When I saw you reuploaded the video, though, I was so happy that I just watched it all again. Here's hoping this stays up for good.
I loooooooved (still do) Alvin and the chipmunks ☺️☺️☺️ great video Tariq . I loved the songs growing up too especially in the Movies.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts. Kier Lehman supervised the music for it and Into the Spiderverse. The music is one of the biggest highlights of the show. It's utilized to add a lot of dimension to the characters and surroundings.
Saw this episode back in January, and I'm thrilled to see it's back up!
Every year I go on a massive Chipmunks mania and binge the FUCK out if the older stuff and it just so happens that every time I come back to this video lol. I really wish there was more videos about Chipmunks history because or like episode reviews or anything because its really so criminally charming and underrated tbh (i completely bame the live action movies).

I really do love Alvin And The Chipmunks. I even saw all 3 live action movies....I just don't admit to it.
I’ve seen all four.
Third one in the theatre, no less!
(I didn’t have the greatest of tastes as a kid.)
The reason you found a gif that only said, "Back to Alvin's Future" is because that was what Buena Vista Home Video called it when they put this one on VHS. That logo is from the VHS release.
Also, not sure why the dialogue is said weird in the "Stanley the Eagle" episode. Might be because it was the first episode of The Alvin Show, and they were going through growing pains that smoothed out as the show went on?? Maybe??
Also, I'm not sure if you brought this up in the video, but "Back to Our Future" is actually the final episode of not only "Chipmunks Go to the Movies", but also the final episode of the 80's Alvin and the Chipmunks series as a whole. Brilliant decision on the Bagdasarians' part to make this marriage of the old and "new-at-the-time" Chipmunks the finale.
Also, last thing, a correction, hopefully this doesn't aggravate you, there are actually 4 different looks for the Chipmunks throughout the 80's.
First there's the 1981 Christmas special, "A Chipmunk Christmas", where the designs are very much based on the "Alvin Show" designs, but with the 70's-flavor Chuck Jones design characteristics fused with them.
Then there's the 1983-85 Ruby Spears designs, which are kind of a mix of "Alvin Show" and "Chipmunk Christmas"; only significant change was that after the first Ruby Spears season, Simon's black glasses were recolored to blue.
Then in 1986, the chipmunk designs were modified again, primarily in the faces; they were made to look a little less squashed and chubby and a bit more humanlike, their faces became more rounded and angular, their cheeks in particular becoming a bit more pointy.
Then, of course, The Chipmunk Adventure film came out in 87, which gave the 86 look much more life and movement than what was possible on a small Saturday Morning television budget, resulting in these designs being the basis for at least the next decade of Chipmunks animation
The Mrakami Wolf and Swenson/DiC designs are, like you said, pretty much based on those from the "Chipmunk Adventure" movie, but on a smaller budget and more limited movement.
Hopefully this wasn't too boring of a read for you, and you learned some new things about "Alvin and his little pals"
Also, that long shot from the "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" music video... yeah, I agree with you, that shit went on forEVER; I actually imagined it being a station ID, some graphics showing up, and some deep-voiced TV announcer man to come on and say, "You're watching channel G-O-W-I, 'Get On With It'. Programming that never knows when to move on."
What Ross Bagdasarian Jr. did when he and his wife took over the Alvin and the Chipmunks 🐿 franchise from his late father Ross Jr., I wished that Tyler and Jason Ritter did with the original Clifford the Big Red Dog, and I wish the 2019 reboot was more like the old show, picking up where the old show left off, but at the same time updated it to make it fresh and new and appealing to a new generation of kids.
Bro, I loved their interactions in the movies "Meet the Wolfman" and "Meet Frankenstein". That's how I see them, as loving brothers❤️
As a family ❤️
Fucking thank you man, so many of the songs in these shows were high-key bops. That shit had me rolling.
Omg please talk about Batmunk! It was always my favorite episode.
17:44 Just wanted to point this out but Alvin & The Chipmunks (1983) was mostly animated in Korea, so that would explain the stiff movement, Hanho Heung-Up did the Ruby Spears seasons (Season 1-5), A-1 Productions for the Murakami Wolf Swanson & DIC produced episodes (Season 6-7), and Sei Young Animation for The Chipmunks: Go to the Movies (Season 8).
Do you think you can do a review of how their personalities differ in the 2015 reboot to the 80s?
That time travel episode is pretty darn cutting edge for a childrens cartoon that aired in 1990 in terms of being meta. If it had aired just a few years later it wouldn't have been anything notable, but in 1990 the only other two childrens cartoons I could imagine would something like that would be Garfield and Friends and Tiny Toon Adventures. In general, the late 80's-early 90's is by far the most interesting period in american television animation to me because the of how quickly the medium evolved and skyrocketed in quality at the time. In 1987 televison animation was still ruled by 30 minute toy commercials with very little planning, cohesion or creativity put behind them and with scripts that appealed only to children, but by 1992 televison was brimming with ambitous, creative, creator-driven cartoons that children and older viewers alike could enjoy. The later seasons of the 80's Chipmunks cartoon existed in the twilight moment between the older and newer era.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore is basically what you get if you take Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and fuse them with chipmunks Chip and Dale. Maybe that's why Chip and Dale weren't saddled with 3 nephews/nieces in that trend that began after H, D, and L were introduced in 1938. Daisy Duck had that with April, May, and June, Toucan Sam had 3 nephews. Hell, Daffy Duck once made a joke about being saddled with three nephews as though Warner Bros was toying with the idea. I think Disney leveled the scales when they made Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid look an awful lot like Dave Seville from their 1987 movie The Chipmunks Adventure. For the longest time I thought it was the other way around, because I didn't know which movie came out first at the time. I was born in 1989. However, Alvin and the Chipmunks did have a heartfelt onscreen reunion with their long-lost mother Vinny more than 30 years before H,D,& L had one with their mom Della Duck in 2017 DuckTales, so kudos for the Chipmunks being ahead of their time on that one.
10:23 I was talking to a friend of mine about this (and she loves Alvin & The Chipmunks)! And, she told me that they didn’t have the technology that we have nowadays, where we could make our voices higher! So, her & I both think what Ross did was that he slow down his dialogue, so that way he could speed up to make it sound like the chipmunks
The last time I watched this video there wasn't a virus ruining everything and the comments were where they belonged. "Seriously UA-cam put the damn comments back at the bottom where they belong." Yep, and in an episode of The Powerpuff Girls called “Helter Shelter,” Professor Utonium kept shouting “BUHHHHBBBBLLLLLESSS!” similarly to how Dave would shout, “AALLLLLVIIIIINNNN!” However, I think that was a coincidence rather than an allusion.
