I am thinking of a silk dress i kept bc it's got decent color and it's silk. However, i don't love the pattern and i dont have a dark slip for it. I felt nude all day and i don't like it enough to go through the trouble of buying a slip. A rough feeling fabric for a tank top i had intended to sleep in...nope. those two otems are easy discards.
So much yes to this. I've always stayed away from polyester, but have recently begun volunteering in a local charity thrift shop. Now I find attractive, well-made and good-fitting (and in good shape and well-priced!) polyester items quite often. I have to remind myself, "If you get this, you won't wear it. You'll get too hot." It works. Well, most of the time...😀
Documenting my wardrobe has been a game changer. I have been uploading everything I buy and wear into a wardrobe planner app and I pass my time creating new outfits and saving them for inspiration. It became crystal clear what I was not wearing and made a massive declutter that much easier. It's also important to differentiate between items you love on others and the things that work for you. For example, I love long flowy and frilly romantic dresses, but they don't work for me. At all. My style is minimal/classic, edgy and effortless. I need all of these characteristics in my outfits to feel good in it. Flowy dresses do not fit these style words.
yes yes golden tips! becoming aware of your habits is key , I definitely made a conscious effort in doing this last 7 years too and now Im in love with my classic timeless elegant wardrobe, never goes out of style , so worth cost per wear for everything i own now!!
This video helped me realise what my dream style is. I looked through Pinterest board and noticed flowy dark maxi skirt on each of them. I have very few clothes and they are hand me down but still I own and wear maxi dresses mostly. On colder days I wear jeans with black rock style or khaki military style T-shirt.
Great idea! What works for me is wearing items that I get compliments on. I wear my favorite things and then I take notes and what is complimented on it’s very interesting.
Great advice! I got the book The Curated Closet from Anuschka Rees a few years ago and have followed the steps there (which are similar to what you state). It’s been so helpful for me as I’ve learned more about my style and how it’s shifted over time along with my lifestyle changes!
These are great guidelines. I have found that I have had to adapt my style since going through the menopause which has been challenging as I was always a pear with a tiny waist and that has really changed. Identifying my basic style as classic, comfy but edgy with a parisian vibe helped on my transition to a new style uniform.
Oh man, I feel ya! I bloat so easily that I'm embarrassed about looking like a snake that ate a bowling ball. Most pants are off the table for me now because of this...
Oh the menopause bloat is wonderful isn’t it 😩 Since i’ve had a wardrobe rethink and maximised on bloat friendly dresses my love of clothes has been reignited, comfort is everything to me now 😊
Comfort should be king, well done! My latest hack is maternity leggings 😅. Wore them today to work with an oversized crisp white shirt and a frock coat type of jacket, and my patent combat boots. No one was any the wiser 😂
Very helpful - it’s not a question of endless shopping but thinking hard about what you have and using to the best advantage. Once you do that you stop spending unnecessarily and instead fill in the existing gaps.
I would also add to point number one is how many compliments you got as that obviously the colours and styles that suit your figure and skin tone best 🙏
This was a great video. I wish I had watched something like this several years ago. I’ve always loved the “boho” “California girl” look on others and I spent a lot of money on pieces in those styles before I just had to admit it didn’t look right on me. I’ve recently discovered that a classic, clean lines type of outfit with maybe a small twist on it is what makes me look and feel my best. I learned about style journaling from another UA-camr and have been writing down my outfits in a physical journal with notes about what I love, like or dislike and what about the outfit or how I look in it makes me feel that way so I can avoid recreating the outfits I feel “meh” in and go straight for the ones I feel great in. Now I spend less time and money trying to look like someone else I admire and am more choosy and buy higher quality items of the ones I know will look and feel good on me.17:51
I love this! I actually have always had issues with tops because I am short with large bust and shoulders. I've finally accepted this and now always wear loose tops as my style uniform. I've never looked back.
I love wearing dresses, sundress floral dresses. And I’m not tired of the silhouette of my dresses but the print, like I’ve worn the same thing over and over again. So I keep buying dresses, and like years later I might rotate back to old dresses. That’s my problem haha
I've had a style uniform for ages but it's only recently that I realized accessorizing was holding me back. I think the hardest part of figuring out accessories is that most of the ones you see or can think of are for going out specifically (bags, coats, hats, sunglasses...) and I'm pretty much a hermit! I'm trying to lean into shoes, jewelry, and hair accessories.
I know decluttering made me have not enough clothes. Having the right amount of clothes is important. Feeling liberated didnt mean go around nearly naked. Remember, most used clothing is cheap or free. Just dont steal or just take from people if wasnt intended. There is plenty of clothing and fabric made to keep creating. Dont follow videos that dont know the size of your closet space.
Katie Louise, this video is SO good! YT algorithm suggested you and I'm so glad it did. I noted down all the steps and will be using them as I distill my wardrobe even more (I've been releasing a lot of clothes recently after years of hanging on to them, feels so good!). I loved all the images you showed us, really helps a lot. Thanks! Look forward to more videos.
I was really struggling with finding my style & going through UA-cam. I just want to say that this video genuinely helped me especially when I am trying to prioritise comfort over anything else. Thank you so much!
This was really interesting and helpful content. I realized that I actually already have a bit of a style uniform going on with lots of the same types of pieces and silhouettes but in different fabrics and (flattering to me) colourways. I had been thinking that this was boring and maybe a fault, but you've made me see that it's the opposite. Happy to stick with that 80/20 rule you mentioned. Thanks!
This is a great idea! However, it seems one may need different uniforms for different times of year. For instance, I love wearing sweater dresses or a knit skirt w/sweater with boots when it’s colder, but that doesn’t translate to spring/summer, as I want to cover my legs, and leather boots are not conducive to the time of year.
This is so thoughtful and well done! Thank you! I find that I have a more feminine style in summer, and revert to jeans, t-shirts and sweaters in the cooler months. In the last two months I have decided I want to continue wearing dresses and skirts into the winter. So I have begun to pin "lagenlook" style outfits, with interesting layers. It has really helped me to figure out a new fall/winter style for myself!
No, i really need to buy a few classic pieces and then I think I’ll be okay because right now I don’t have current things more like trendy items from 5-10 years ago
Very helpful process to describe, I have thought about documenting those odd favourite styles....but because they are not consistent and per season, I don't think of it as a relevant/useful thing to do...and that I'm still in limbo between something and something. I think I've also been stuck in a mind set, to focus on what I don't like...and actually...when most of your wardrobe feels awkward on you. It just makes you feel lost, because you're not driven by positives. But I should really celebrate and pay attention to the occasional positive outfit days - and pair it with Pinterest, strategically. It makes sense to invite more positive choice and movement towards what I actually want! Also, you have a very useful perspective of dressing that awkward part of you first...for me... I'm also petite! ..and in a way, thank god! It's so so much more common to get petite options in things like trousers now!! But it can still mean the shops are full of pitfalls and things you see are lovely by design, but just too long and sit weird. I imagine it's similar for taller gals too. We feel awkward in a 'standard' world or you incidentally benefit from a brand's take on standard 😅
Really loved this. Got lots of helpful ideas I never heard or thought about before, and you have a very nice way about you that makes the information easy to take in. Thank you for this!
I also have written down clothes I own tees, tops, bottoms and outerwear. Highlight which I love green, like orange and not sure about red. Then I can see straight away when I want to reduce what can go. Plus I also make sure each section is 15 items maximum.
Thank you Katie really useful video. I too am a curvy girl with both a generous bottom half but also a good bust too. So good tip to start with my bottom half. And lifestyle is key. Even though it can be hard to admit it sometimes.
I am petite and pear-shaped, and I have wide feet. It is so important to start with the hardest to fit area, including trouser/jean length and sleeve length. If it's too tight or too long, you're going to fidget with it all day. For me it was also helpful to decide once and for all that I am a cardigan girlie. No matter how many blazers and faux leather jackets I like and try to wear, I'm gonna be more comfortable in a cardigan. Also, if you can track your outfits in an app that shows you which items you wear most often, you may find you've already chosen some of your best wardrobe staples.
Hello Katie, I just discovered your channel and it is very informative, this video in particular. I'm 41 yo, home office worker (as a Spanish teacher, living in Argentina) and I struggle a lot with weather when it comes to put together and outfit... I see so many cute outfits for winter but on my mind is .... I'm gonna be cold if I wear this. So is very hard for me to put and outfit together. Also I gravitate more to the comfort side of my wardrobe: joggers and a hoodie, that would be my style uniform right now. Also I feel very lost when I've to shop...here in Argentina clothes are very low quality and very expensive, so I do prefer to shop on thrift stores. Anyway I'm rumbling here. Thank you, this video was a hit. New subscriber here ❤
when you started talking about uniform outfits without doing it the Steve Jobs way I immediately was thinking about Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in vampire diaries. They both have a color palette and its basically jeans and casual top both with a different take. Elena is more of wide leg jeans , converse and hanley long sleaves with lace camis most of the time. Katherine is more oriented toward lace camis and a little leather jacket with skinny jeans and high health boots. Elena as a more fall ish color palette. Katherine gravitates more towards black since her shoes and coats are often those color. Her make up is more of a dark smooky eye where Elena has more of brown natural make up. Elena wears more shorts necklace with small pendant where Katherine often has a longer chain and a slightly bigger pendant. They are both player by the same actress but because of those uniforms types of outfit and Nina’s acting skills you can easily tell who is who.
Great video! I brought a uniform on a vacation recently and it made everything (packing and dressing) so much easier. I can’t wait to apply this to my everyday life.
Great content! I find myself wearing and pinning a lot of straight leg pants or jeans with a crew tee and either a crew neck sweater or blazer. I accessorize with scarves a lot in my hair and on my neck. I buy other shape pants but always find myself going back to straight. Also been loving my barrel leg for a little more edgy look. Same uniform tho
I wear long dresses with flat sandals or tennis shoes. Or I wear high waist looser shorts. Or I wear mini tennis dresses, with usually an oversized shirt thrown over them.
I really liked this video, new subscriber here! I tend to reach over and over for a loose comfortable pant and an oversized cotton button down. I'll put a cute coat or sweater over it in the winter, so it works year round for me. It's clever to think about how accessories can really change the energy of the outfit.
Great video Katie, must have been fun to make too :) I def agree with adressing your most challenging feature first. For me it's large bust combined with narrow shoulders (most challenging) then large waist to hip ratio (10" difference, second most challenging). Watching this video made me realize I have my own style formula's too without really knowing it.
I used to do this when I had a job 😩. I’ve been a sahm for 8 years now. Between each baby I am able to get to my ideal weight but in the I between I feel so frumpy. My youngest is 6 months and I am in a rut. This inspired me to get back to it.
Hi Katy, Great content. I've got to work around having short legs and an aversion to heels, which is my most limiting thing. I also feel that pointy flats are cute on other people, but they're just not me. I'm good with sandals in summer and flat ankle boots in winter and I go from there. Btw, I'm an older woman but I still wear jeans and casual things a lot. Skirts disguise short legs, and I wear them more lately. It's good to keep evolving.
I really enjoyed this video and found the tips very helpful. I am looking forward to implement them to pin down my style uniforms. My life is very versatile when it comes to outfits as I am in the office 2-3 times a week with a very strict dress code and the rest I work from home. I own a dog which puts other demands on my clothes. I also have a great interest in looking good and love a retro inspired look. Thank you for a well researched video!
I always have trouble with documenting my style honestly because when I know I'm going to take a picture, I put in nore effort than I normally would. There's also the phenomenon where if it's my day off and I put in more effort for my ootd photo, like putting on my dress because the outfit isn't technically complete without it, I tend to undo some of that effort as soon as the photo has been taken, like taking the dress back off because I don't need it until 3 PM. 9:54 I'm a bottom hourglass (36 bust, 29 waist, 39 hip), but I'm also transmasculine. I enjoy feminine fashion as much as the next boy, and I love highlighting my trim waist, but I don't want to accentuate the size of my bust, because it's a big dysphoria trigger for me, and it's difficult to have one without the other. The disparity between my hips and waist should, logically, be the hardest part to dress, and it _can_ be difficult to find rtw pieces that fit comfortably through that whole area, but I will always have more difficulty with the top half. I was raised super-fundamentalist Christian, and tight clothing still really chafes against my sense of modesty, as does clothing that shows a lot of skin. My usual style uniform is: straight-leg jeans (+ belt) + below-knee skirt + t-shirt + flannel + ponytail + crew socks + tennis shoes. Sometimes, I wear a dress instead of a skirt + t-shirt, but I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that the dresses that mask my bust swallow my waist, and the dresses that accentuate my waist draw attention to my bust, so skirts feel better.

Hii @melocoton7, could you please share the name of the app? Thanks
@@magdalenad.1936 it’s called Stylebook 🤗
@@magdalenad.1936Whering is terrific 🥰
yes yes golden tips! becoming aware of your habits is key , I definitely made a conscious effort in doing this last 7 years too and now Im in love with my classic timeless elegant wardrobe, never goes out of style , so worth cost per wear for everything i own now!!
I definitely agree with documenting your fashion that way you can make tweaks and adjustments in finding your true style!
Cudos for having made so many points that I never heard / read of before and feel they will help a lot. Thank you!
Yay! So pleased you found some useful tips 🥰
I love this!! Thanks for sharing ☺️
I love this book, too!
I definitely agree with just the title of this video, I find styling creatively the clothes you already have is key to have infinite outfits 💓
Once you do that you stop spending unnecessarily and instead fill in the existing gaps.
truth has been spoken! it's about finding what you love and building from that foundation for sure!
I would also add to point number one is how many compliments you got as that obviously the colours and styles that suit your figure and skin tone best 🙏
Yes definitely!!
It's so funny that the minute I saw your vídeo I thought ''I need that pink cardigan'' 🥺
That rosy pink/ soft fuchsia colour looks amazing on you!!
Awh thank you!
Now I spend less time and money trying to look like someone else I admire and am more choosy and buy higher quality items of the ones I know will look and feel good on me.17:51
Which UA-camr is what you mentioned?
@@Tiamarruca Her name is Marie-Ann Lecoeur. She does videos for French chic style over 50 but so many of her tips etc apply to all ages.
@Tiamarruca When you mentioned the other UA-camr I wondered if you were referring to Marie-Anne. I love her channel and I've learned so much from her.
I am similar. I’m a classic who loves Boho!
I love this! I actually have always had issues with tops because I am short with large bust and shoulders. I've finally accepted this and now always wear loose tops as my style uniform. I've never looked back.
Amazing! So great when we figure out what works for us.
Wow..this was actually really helpful! Love the tips..more often than not we don’t consider body types when we’re pinning outfits.
So glad you found it helpful! Ikr!? It’s something I always need to remind myself
Love this type of content, how to style without buying! I'm trying to save money for school and it's a bummer haha.
So glad you enjoyed it!
You look very nice in skirts. Your hip is balanced to your top as the eyes are not drawn to just your hips but from the waist to bottom as a whole.
I would probably say my style uniform is an a-shaped mini skirt and a tighter top :) lots of accessories that are gold and dainty :)
I am now mostly pinning outfits I like for me personally that I can easily re-create right from my own wardrobe😘
Love that!
the LYXBAGS would be super cute during the fall with a nude or tan or even tonal outfit! i’m thinking a tan wool coat with that bag!!
Brilliant video Katie Louise. So thorough and well spoken. Thank you for the helpful tips!
I also have written down clothes I own tees, tops, bottoms and outerwear. Highlight which I love green, like orange and not sure about red. Then I can see straight away when I want to reduce what can go. Plus I also make sure each section is 15 items maximum.
Katie! Excellent video as usual. Just want to pop in and say I love pink & mauve & berry colors on you!
Awh thank you so much!
Hello Katie! Just wanted to say that your hair is sooo beautiful! And thank you so much for these valuable tips.
I'm a pear shape, and i love to wear dresses, especialy fit and flare and A-line.
Same!
Great video. I am working on my accessories. As a pear shaped lady myself wide leg jeans and pants are my go to!
Thank you! Lots of pear shaped ladies around here 🥰
My typical outfit : jeans or a chino, a mariniere or a shirt, a jacket or a trench and white sneakers or ballet flats 😄
Also, if you can track your outfits in an app that shows you which items you wear most often, you may find you've already chosen some of your best wardrobe staples.
great tips!
New subscriber here ❤
I work online and can’t get out of lounge clothes.
when you started talking about uniform outfits without doing it the Steve Jobs way I immediately was thinking about Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in vampire diaries.
This is a VERY detailed & thoughtful video. Well done! Just subscribed. 😊
Loved this topic and your process and ideas for it. Not pictures of your examples would make it even better.
Glad you liked it!
Great video! I brought a uniform on a vacation recently and it made everything (packing and dressing) so much easier. I can’t wait to apply this to my everyday life.
This is a really clear, systematic way to understand your style, thank you for sharing!! Such a smart approach 😊
This video was extremely helpful!! I tried the Pinterest tip and it definitely helped me notice what look I gravitate towards.
This is SO helpful!! I'm definitely coming back to this video as I start working through the steps. Thank you, Katie!
Yay!! So glad you found it helpful Joyce 🥰
Just subscribed!! I’ve watched lots of style uniform vids, but your perspective is fresh-with lots of new to me ideas. Really appreciate it. 💚💚
Yay, welcome!! 🥰
Body type outfit inspos are the best idea!!!!
awesome video, Katie! ...almost 10k subscribers and they're all well-deserved, because videos like this are fantastic!
Thank you Lidia, that means a lot! ❤
Hi Katy,
Great content.
The advice you gave about dressing for your most challenging areas was so helpful! Thank you for this great video 😊
You're so welcome!
Really useful and realistic advices, loved this video!!❤
Documenting, documenting, documenting!!! I need to start here . Thanks for video Katie!❤

Great video! I'm going to start documenting my outfits. I've been in a outfit slump since I work from home three days a week.
I work from home a lot so I know how you feel! It’s so easy to get into a slump. Hopefully the documentation helps!
Wow, love love love these tips! 💕 There are so many components that I only partially carried out, like taking a picture of my outfit but not going back to ID what worked and what didn’t. 1. Document
2. Record feelings
3. Pinterest for inspiration
4. Outfits that work on your body type
5. Realistic outfits for your lifestyle (elevate basic tee and jeans with accessories or cardigan)
6. Start with the hardest part first (top half for me)
7. Know when to experiment
8. Figure out what you don't like
9. Comfort and practicality
10. Don't neglect accessories
Some really great tips! Wouldn't narrower leg pants look slimmer than the wide leg?
This video was so so helpful! Thank you!!
Thank you Katie. I loved the video. You gave a good idea of how to use PInterest in a way that would help me instead of just randombly looking at things. I think taking the picture makes so much sense! I always forget because I am in a rush to leave and I always think I will remember the ourfit but the truth is that I foget. I like tha idea because even though I can put up nice comfortable outfits everynow and then I think if I take the picture I could refine them with the accesories and make them even bettter. Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed the video! I totally agree - sometimes I don’t want to take the picture because I’m in a rush or I think my outfit looks bad but looking back it is always so helpful!
You have some very helpful suggestions. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
I love variety in fashion however I’m reminded that Christian Dior was the first to have 40 perfectly tailored identical pearl grey suits which he wore day in and day out for decades.
Excellent and very useful video! Many thanks for your tips ❤

This was really helpful, thank you! ☺💕
Such good points, thank you for this video! I feel like I pretty much have my style pinned down, but I'm missing a lot of key items in my wardrobe and now my problem is that I don't know where to look for them. My budget isn't sufficient enough to only shop at Sezane or similar brands, but I really don't like the clothes that you can currently find in most fast-fashion stores. So if you have any tips, they'd be most welcome!
Thank you so much for this video! It was super helpful!! ❤
Yay, you’re welcome!!
I love this video! Thank you sooo much!
Very helpful. I don’t do a great job on documentation, usually, because I end up being upset by the imperfections I see… but I think it’s worth another try!
that's really relatable actually, I definitely have those moments too! Interestingly I find that I'm most critical immediately after taking the photo, whereas if I come back to it a few days later I'm like hey - I actually really like this outfit on me!
@@katie_louiseI came back to this video again tonight… I’ve discovered that one of my main uniforms is a skirt or shorts with a basic top, jacket (think denim or corduroy) and a pop of yellow. 💛 I know it’s not a super popular colour but I just loooooove it.
