Circus Cemetery & Lane Frost Grave

- Hugo, Oklahoma is known as Circus City, USA. It has been the home of numerous circus companies during the winter time off season. Because of that there is a special section in the Mount Olivet Cemetery called Showman's Rest. In it you will find the final resting place for clowns, announcers, animal trainers and various other circus performers. The cemetery is also home for the famous cowboys Lane Frost and Freckles Brown.

Just discovered your channel... awesome! It is military of origin, pennies just mean you payed your respects...A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed...we adopted this around the time of Vietnam :)
Yes you are correct on the coins which I see at a lot of places. Even on non military graves. I wondered if they meant something similar in the circus world. Someone left a comment recently that the bubbles were in place of balloons. It's the only cemetery i have seen with bubbles. Thanks for finding my channel and watching.
Thank you for showing Lane's grave... and the tour. We will most certainly be making a stop there...
You're welcome. It's definitely worth a stop.
It's in hugo Oklahoma
Great video !!!!!!! Those were two real cowboys right there !!!!
Thank you Chuck! Yes they were. I'm amazed at how so many still look up to Lane even though they weren't alive in his lifetime. That would have made Lane really happy.
You are to be commended on presenting these documentaries. You're respectfulness and informative about these people is tremendous!! Thank You for taking the time to remember these Amazing People who were the True Meaning of Entertainment.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching as well as commenting. I think these circus people enjoyed a lifetime of bonding together. They lived and traveled together for many years. I do love how they have decided to be buried together and you can still see tiny glimpses of who they are.
The Lane Frost movie 8 seconds broke my heart. Thank you for this tour.
+hawbydawg It is a sad move but it's so good! Thanks for watching!
The movie is filled with a lot of BS though. They made his dad out to be an overbearing jerk. Lane was actually my cousin, and Clyde Frost is my uncle. He's a very sweet man, he loves his son very much, and he's extremely proud of him. Every time I see him, he's wearing a commemorative belt buckle, and the ring they gave Lane when he won. Last time I saw him, I asked him to let me hold the ring. It's massive and weighs a ton. Super impressive. But he's an extremely nice man, so it's messed up how they portrayed him in the movie.
That's a really cool relation. I haven't heard anything about his parents in a long time. The unfortunate thing Hollywood does that to the majority of based on a true story movies. They always thing they know a better way of presenting the actual story. That's really unfortunate. But I will say one positive thing about the movie. It's kept Lane's memory alive and has kept younger cowboys inspired to do more.
@@RhettyforHistory His real parents are actually in the movie. At the beginning of the movie, Lane (Luke Perry) walks up to an elderly couple at a rodeo and says hi to them. That's the actual Clyde and Elsie Frost. I never even got to meet him, I was only 11 when he died, and we lived pretty far away from them. But I knew of him. I think I first met his parents at the funeral for Lane's and my grandmother, Clyde's and my dad's mom. But they're good people.
I will say that his grave is well visited and its moving to see little cowhands leaving momentos in his honor. I know he was a great person and his parents workand hard to carry on that legacy at countless rodeos after he was gone. They do sound like outstandingly good people.
How wonderful to have a cemetary with so many performers sharing their final resting place.
Golly,I bet they are having the best time ever!
Like children at recess!
Love it! ♥️
It's a unique cemetery and one of my favorite. I love how you can tell a little bit more about the people there. Thanks for watching Alma!
@@RhettyforHistory, I grew up in Hugo not far from cemetery
This is a fascinating cemetery and I have been in there several times and have two videos on it.
The custom of leaving a coin for the dead to pay the Ferryman to take them into the next world goes back to Greek mythology.
That's interesting. I've only heard it associated with military or important figures. But I do occasionally see it on other graves.
@@RhettyforHistory It's for anyone and found on anyone's graves. The Greeks put a coin in the deceased's mouth, and over time, people started putting them over the deceased's eyes, to pay for crossing the River Styx. This is just another way to "help" a person on their way when you don't have access to their body.
I have never seen a cemetery like this it's beautiful and the details on the stone so well kept I'm glad you found it
It's really one of my favorite cemeteries simply because it's so different. Thank you for watching!
How cool is this!!! A cemetery totally devoted to the performer's of The Circus!!! I love this. What an honor for those who have moved on to the big circus in the sky..
There aren't very many cemeteries like this. It's one of my favorites. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I love cemeteries
I do too! I find myself in them a lot doing videos.
freckles brown was Lane Frost mentor and family friend thats why Lane is buried near him
+Scott Woodfin Yes you're right! Its pretty cool to see them together. The bull that Freckles was famous for riding, Tornado, is buried behind The Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
RhettyforFun another good movie about Lane is called Challange of Champions it tells more of his stories. then the movie i am from and live in Virginia but i love Lane's story
+Scott Woodfin I havent heard of that movie! Im going to have to check that one out! Thanks for pointing that out!
RhettyforFun your welcome
+Scott Woodfin If youre a fan of both stay tuned then. At some point I will be filming Tornado's burial location as well as some other rodeo animals and cowboy stuff!
After Luke Perry's death today, I had to watch your video again since you showed the grave of Lane Frost. (Luke played the part of Lane in the movie "8 Seconds". ). This is truly a great video. The circus graves are so interesting and I had forgotten how many had elephant statues on them. Your tribute to Lane was very nice.
I was a big Luke Perry fan. I loved 90210 especially the first three seasons. But I also loved 8 Seconds. I saw that in a theatre that was packed in Oklahoma. I was worried about how he would do in a part that was drastically different. But I really feel like he embodied Lane and his family's legacy well. I know that there are some differences between the movie and real life but that movie has mad fans of Lane's where he wouldn't have had them otherwise. I've been in that cemetery several times and there are always gifts from people on Lane's grave and I'm amazed at how many are little kids. So sad that no Luke is gone as well. Thanks for watching again and commenting.
RhettyforFun Luke perry also stared in a show called windfall with Lana parrilla
I'm not familiar with that one.
RhettyforFun u will have to look it up on UA-cam it was on back in 2006
I love this! These entertainers obviously wanted their legacy to live on and wanted these uniquely detailed markers to be seen. Thank you for sharing! I live in Columbus Ohio, and I recently learned that the nearby shopping center used to be the Sells Circus grounds. I saw a documentary and old photos of monkeys and elephants that would wander off the grounds and into the neighborhood where I live now. They left when they were bought out by Barnum and Bailey. Sadly, there's no historical markers or cemeteries like these nearby. If I hadn't seen that documentary, I would have never known about this!
ErynRenee That's sounds like an interesting documentary. I'll have to check that out. That would be weird to have circus animals running all around in your neighborhood. These circus people had a different life roaming from town to town always on the move and always trying to entertain us. Thank you for watching and commenting.
RhettyforFun The documentary is actually part of the Columbus Neighborhoods series. I'm a history lover and I love my city, so it's obviously my favorite.
Here is a link to the episode about the circus

And this is a brief video about Sellsville (circus grounds) and they talk about the animals escaping

I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching your videos!
@@ErynRenee where was Sellsville in cbus?
Nice video, thank you for sharing it. Freckles Brown was the only person to ride the Bull, named Tornado which had been turned out 200 times in 14 years and only ridden once.
+The General You're welcome and thank yoh for watching! I didn't know the exact statistics on Tornado but I knew Freckles had ridden him and was a legend of his own in his time. Sometime in the future I do plan on doing something about Tornado though.
I really enjoyed that cause I love the circus and Rodeo..love the movie 8Seconds great movie thanks for sharing
That is a great movie. I have seen that one a lot. Thank you for watching Gayla.
I have the movie 8 Seconds, Lane Frost was amazing & Luke Perry played him so very well in the movie, Keep up the great work RhettyforFun, I enjoy your videos ALOT!!!!! May they both R.I.P
Luke Perry did such a great job embodying the role of Lane Frost. It's difficult to not think of Lane and Luke. Both names start with L and both names have the same amount of letters. I watched 8 seconds in the theatre and then practically wore out a VHS tape of it. Both now have a sad story and were taken way too soon and in their Prime. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate the kind words.
@@RhettyforHistoryNo sir, Thank You!!!
Such beautiful carvings on the headstones. I've never felt so much joy in a cemetery of all places...a fitting memorial to people who gave so much happiness to others. One of the Frost headstones was made up of 2 big carved seals. I wonder if that was a seal trainer. Thank you for the tour.💕🙂
You're welcome and thank you for watching Marcie!
WOW!!! We have a Mt. Olivet here in SLC, UT. Ours house soldiers from tje Indian, Civil and Spanish/American wars. As well as Masons. It's awesome. This is the place my son wants to clean up for his Eagle Scout.
That sounds like an interesting one to wander around in. I'd love to see it.
Okie Carr the animal trainer is my husbands father. He trained animals for the show for 42 years. He died of cancer.
That's a long time training animals. He must have really loved his job. Did your husband ever go into the circus?
RhettyforFun yes him and his whole family.
That's incredible!
I gave this a down vote because it just did not seem "right" to hit thumb up when this was about the death of your father-in-law.
SO SAD 😭 THEY JUST REPORTED LUKE PERRY who played Lane Frost in the movie 8 Seconds passed away just this morning 03-04-19 from a stroke he suffered just a few days ago!! I was just thinking of him with the Anniversary of Lane’s passing! I was thinking just before I heard about his stroke how they could interview him as someone who portrayed Lane??? RIP Lane & Luke
It's so very sad. I can't hardly think about Lane without also thinking about Luke and 8 seconds. I saw it in the theatre and it was absolutely packed here in Oklahoma. Luke had such a different role in 8 seconds compared to what he had in 90210. We all wondered if he could pull it off but I think he embodied it well.
Absolutely so sad indeed. Will be two years already. Amazing place to see and pay our respects to them . Truly not forgotten 😢😢♥️♥️
Thanks for showing this cemetery.. How interesting. I’d love to see all the headstones someday. So Much history.
You're welcome and thank you for watching. This is a great one to visit if you ever get the opportunity. I've done two videos from this cemetery.
How beautiful and touching! I love how the family can feel free to express their love for their lost ones. Here in Idaho, where I live, theives steal everything from flowers, vases to the actual headstone. Sickens me! I'm happy their are beautiful resting places like these w respect for those who have gone before us! Wonderful video! 💜🖤💜🖤💜🖤
Thank you Bubbles. This really is a great cemetery to visit. It's one of my favorite. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
I too thank you for showing Lane’s grave. I think you did an amazing job respecting the entire cemetery, but namely Lane and his mentors, Freckles’ grave. Much respect and gratitude for you.
Thank you Jennifer. He really was quite the bull rider and role model for little kids. His legacy is still going strong. Thank you for watching!
It's actually a pretty neat video you've made,
It's beyond great to see people's lives being celebrated,( as they should be )
Bravo to you, great job!!!
I am glad I was able to see this, thanks ☮️☮️✝️✝️☀️☀️
Thank you and I appreciate you watching. This is one of my favorite cemeteries. I love how you can get a tiny glimpse of what they did in life.
This was a great video.. Lane's friend Cody lambert still comes to all the rodeos in our area. He was an amazing bull rider...thanks for sharing
Yeah he was a great bullriders in his own right and proved that's he's every bit as good if not better than Lane. Thats really cool you get to see him though. Thanks for watching!
WhatThe? Paranormal
Cody is my Great Grandfathers brother's Great Grandson
Nice cemetery different ones than I've seen great video.
+Ray Ray The Explorer Thank you! Every cemetery is unique in some way.
RIP Cowboy
I remember hearing about Lane Frost when I was little little a very humble kind guy was genuine in making sure his fans knew he appreciated them wich made it harder to aknowledge he took his last ride 😔. Thank you for sharing
You're welcome and thank you for watching. You're right about him being good to his fans.
I loved the video, nice to know the circus people are all together and taken care of so nicelly...dee
They definitely have their own community and take care of each other. Thanks for watching Diane!
A unique and fascinating tour. Thank you 😎
You're welcome and thank you for watching!
Another beautiful and respectful presentation Rhetty. You are a fine gentleman for bringing these cemeteries and headstones to light. Thank you.
You're welcome and I appreciate you watching as well as the kind words.
Great job!!
RhettyForFun thanks for the great video. I have friends in circus and I have worked side shows for years on and off. I wouldn't change it for the world. Once your friends with circus people they take you on as family . The showmans rest is brilliant. I've been to the one in Florida where a friends of mine who was a well known clown is now buried. I miss him everyday he was a great man had time for everyone and loved his fans. Which he had quite a few.
So nice to see the late brilliant talented Lane Frost's stunning grave too. The movie they made was brilliant . Such a shame a man so talent had to die so young.
Thankyou for visiting the Cemetary and making this footage and uploading it for us all to enjoy.
Samantha from France.
+Samantha Cevert Thank you for the kind words and for watching. I do think that anyone in the circus works extremely hard and they form lifelong bonds that other people simply do not understand. I loved this cemetery because it was so unique from others that I have seen. I'm curious on how the one in Florida is. I loved how this one gave you little glimpses into their lives and you could see what they did in the circus. In many ways it's like they were still performing!
your doing a fanatic job on your videos keep up the good work we all miss Lane Frost he was a excellent fanatic bull rider champion also Lane mentor Freckles they both will never be forgotten thank you for sharing your videos with us
+joanna noone Thank you for the kind words Joanna! I will be doing something a little more on Freckles in the not to distant future. Lane and Freckles both were legends in their own time!
RhettyforFun nu
Just discovered your videos and I am hooked. Thank you for your hard in making them and I will keep watching.
Thank you for watching and I'm glad you're here!
Absolutley beautiful cemetery and headstones. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome and thanks for watching! It's definitely one of my favorite cemeteries!.
Fascinating and interesting!
Thank you! It's one of my favorite cemeteries to visit.
Just noticed this episode on showman‘s rest. I happen to be doing the showman ‘s rest up in Hammond Indiana, where a lot of these Circus performers were killed in a horrific train crash back in 1918.
Nice job on this video.
That was a super tragic event that happened. I'm not aware of another one like that. Thanks for watching!
Great job God bless
+kelly myers Thank You! I appreciate you watching!
The bubbles are in place of balloons!
Interesting. It's the first and only place I have ever seen that.
It would be so cool to leave balloons, but they wouldn't last as long.
Maybe some of those little mylar ones on a stick would last awhile.
@@RhettyforHistory yeah but it wouldn't be the same as me making a few balloon sculptures.
That's true
What a unique cemetery. Great headstones, thanks Rhetty. 🇦🇺❤️🐨
I really love visiting this cemetery. I have been there quite a few times. Thank you for watching!
What an amazing cemetery! Thank you for documenting it so descriptively.
You're welcome. This is one of my favorite cemeteries. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing.

I remember the Lane Frost story.!! Wow, that he is buried there! The headstone is indeed a buckle. Thanks so much. I am gonna stick around and enjoy your great videos.
+P Fletch Thank you and welcome! I'm glad you liked this one!
I really like this cemetery and I am an admirer of Lane Frost. He was a Champion bull-rider cowboy and a real gentleman !
Yes he was. There are several cowboys in this cemetery that are legendary. I just did a new video not that long ago where we dive into more details on all of them. Thank you for watching my friend.
I love this, thank you!

You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, for sharing. God Bless You! :)
+Blanca L. Padilla Thanks, I appreciate you watching!
Thank you,very interesting!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and subscribing!
The epitaph on the wagon wheel headstone says: "All that is left is popcorn sacks and wagon tracks. The circus is gone.". ☹️
It's sad because it's slowly happening to the circus itself and not just to the performers when they die.
Thanks for such a nice tribute. I did really enjoy your vlogs. I always learn something. I miss the old circus tents .
Thank you Stephen, I appreciate you taking the time to watch them. It seems like the circus is slowly disappearing. When I did this video Oklahoma was still the winter home of the largest tent circus and now gone.
Interesting video. Thanks!
Thank you and I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for sharing. Long live the circus!
+Danny Draait Thanks for watching Danny!
RhettyforFun
whenever you're in Paris visit Pere Lachaise cemetary. it's also very impressive.
+Danny Draait I'd sure like to! I bet there are several over there that would be interesting!
RhettyforFun I assume you're interested in history and culture (why else would we visit cemetaries). Whenever you can afford it, you really should visit Europe. Barcelona and Lisbon are great, so is Amsterdam and Antwerp. Rome is amazing. Vienna and Prague are unforgettable.
I'm saving money to visit Washington, Philadelphia and NY. And the giant red woods in Northern California I just must to see! (I'm actually only waiting for the post-Trump period before visiting the U.S... lol)
same reason why I didn't mention Istanbul...
Yea ,, thanks for showing lanes Grave!!! So Awesome!! My dream is to visit there one day .
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Thank you. Very unique cemetery. And you are very respectful as always with your videos
This is definitely one of my favorite cemeteries. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Could you leave your camera on the graves a little longer so the dates can be read? Great video. Never knew other Circuses existed besides Barnum and Bailey.
Bill Rivenbark Hopefully on someone of my newer videos I've done that. Thank you for the feedback.
Thanks your vedios are great. I live in Chicago and we have several here in Rosehill cemetery in Chicago. They we're transported from Lincoln Park which was once a cemetery many years ago. That's when they decided to remove these bodies to different cemeteries. Yet your site of vedios are far much better. Thanks for sharing your vedio
Just an added information they were from Ringling Brothers 🎪.
You're welcome. I appreciate you watching and also adding comments. These circus cemeteries are fascinating. You can really get the sense that they were a close community.
Really enjoyed this. Thank you. 👍
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome video! Didn't know such a place existed where the performers are buried! Subscribed. Looking forward to more videos to come! TYVM for uploading!
+Lola2248 Thank you! It's a fantastic place to visit and very interesting how you can get glimpses of their lives by just looking at the markers. There aren't many like this across the nation.
Thank you so much!
Julie Richardson Youre welcome. Thank you for watching!
Wow I have never seen anything like this in my life.......thank you for doing this I found it fasinating xxxx
This is one of my favorite cemeteries that I've visited. I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Most interesting... worth visiting for sure.
Yes, I think so too. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful vid! Thanks so much for sharing. Makes me think of my mom and grandfather who rode in the parade in Cheyenne in the early 40s I believe.
Thank you! There is a lot of history in that parade!
Beautiful resting place. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
RhettyforFun When will you be doing the video on "Takin care of business"?
Yes lol I seen/ read the comments and seen you had mentioned that you was gonna do a vlog on him.
I hope to soon. I have a few things ahead of it!
RhettyforFun I'll make sure I keep an eye out for it! I'll probably never have or get a chance to travel to Oklahoma although it would be awesome to but reality I live to far and yeah know "life"
But thank you this was a great video and I'm most definitely gonna check out a few other's. Thanks!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks watching my videos! That's always great to hear.
They have something similar, also called “showman’s rest” in forest park, Illinois.. a very peaceful place
You're right about that. That one has it's own interesting story. There is a mass amount of them there from a train wreck.
RhettyforFun
True story
I had family that used to live across the street from cemetery, we visited them at lot as kids, while growing up in the late ‘70’s early ‘80’s kids from the neighborhood had stories it was a haunted area and you could hear elephant trumpeting from the elephant statues guarding the graves, but later told by the adults it was the elephants from Brookfield zoo and elephants could be heard up to 6 miles...as kids, that scared us..lol
And yes! I’m now a subscriber!
This is Nice to see here.. Thank You for sharing.. Glad I ran across your video.. God Bless

My dad and brother are burried in Woodlawn cemetery in Forest Park IL. There is a Showman's Rest section for those that passed from a circus train accident in Hammond IN in 1928.
That's quite a tragic event that happened and there were a lot that were killed in that accident.
This was so interesting and thank you for the back story. A very cool explore. :)

Just Found this one Amazing Rhettyforfun
Thank you Claire. I appreciate you watching.
Great video....very informative...great job!!!
Thank you L B! I appreciate you watching.
I had to watch this again, my husband team ropes an we are huge rodeo fans. Lane Frosts family is still very active in rodeo, PRCA. You need to come to Colorado and visit the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.
I would like to go there to cover that. I do love going to the rodeo. Especially when they are in small towns. I did not realize you all were rodeo folks. I have some more rodeo history I would like to cover here in Oklahoma. Thanks for taking the time to watch again.
Some of the head stones are nicer than some of the Hollywood stones.
It's definitely a nice cemetery
Great place and very interesting x
It's one of my favorite cemeteries to visit because it's so different. Thanks for watching Sandy.

Perez, Samuel (1969-2001) - Acrobat - His tombstone shows him doing a flying trapeze trick. A member of the famous Perez flying act from Mexico City, Samuel performed a stunt know as the Wheel of Death - a stunt with a jumping rope atop a spinning wheel. His marker includes acrobatic equipment along with lovely flowers. His career was short lived due to illness.
Wow! Wheel of Death! That sounds intense but also exciting. Thank you for researching and sharing.

At 15:10 the Alder headstone, I noticed that it said Mother and Son. That is very unusual? I wish I knew more about some of these memorials. This is a wonderful video. I'm glad I can experience it through your efforts. God bless you.
That's interesting on that mother and son. I don't think I noticed that before. It would be interesting to know the full story. Thanks for watching and commenting. It's great to have you along on the journey!
I live in Oklahoma, too. I was in a cemetery near Asher and west of 177, when I saw the grave of a baby and its mother. The baby was born and died on the same day; the mother's death day was the same as the infant. I guess the young mother died in childbirth, sadly. The mother was around 20 years of age and they shared the grave... This was the first grave I ever saw like this. I've seen more since then, however. As an aside, old cemeteries are full of children. Only 20% used to live to adulthood.
That huge grave monument at the 17:00 mark tells of how the town of Hugo got it's name. Lina Buford named the townsite after her favorite actor, Victor Hugo. They were originally buried in the historic Fairlawn cemetery in Oklahoma City then reinterred here with in 1977. Google William Harrison Darrough. Interesting story.
RfF, Woah, Cool vid.. I had no idea about all the Circus ppl gathering there in Hugo & the cemetery. • Nice tribute to Lane.
One of the circus closed this last fall so now there is only one circus left I believe. I'm sure many more performers will be buried there though.
It's definitely worth a side trip to this amazing little cemetery in Hugo. You certainly won't regret it. Plan it for your next road trip. Many descendants of the old circus performers still live in Hugo with a fairly decent population of 'little people'.
In Oklahoma
