I've been considering this video idea for a few months now. Although the subject matter could be seen as negative, please understand that I, and many others, genuinely love this game - that's why we're so frustrated. My views are fair and not intended to incite anger. I kindly ask that the comments section remain civil.

I know you’re an official partner but it’s sad you have to pander and hold back on the straight forward opinions you and many of us have. The game is a travesty at this point. I mourn the wasted potential. I am frustrated at the fact emporium gets priority over smoother gameplay, bug corrections and cheat removal.
You should be able to objectively criticize Rare without fear of them retaliating. I know it’s in their nature to ban and silence people who dare suggest Rare could be doing better… but for about a year now (since HG released) I haven’t seen anything from Rare that tells me they are prioritizing the gaming experience. They are wholly incompetent.
You recently made a video about Rare no longer communicating consistently with its player base. That is, in a nutshell, the crux of the issues. Promises aren’t delivered and then it’s just silence.
Prioritize new players over player retention and whale chasing in the emporium rather than overall community and game health, this is where we end up.
Rare is screwing up in a variety of ways. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind, you don’t have to apologize as you criticize. We love the game same as you. The developers at Rare are adults. It’s time we put the quality of the game over their feelings.

And then there is the fact that many year1 players, like me, have so much gold that they do not know what to do with it, literally. I am too empathic too and always felt my fair share of guilt when I stole from other players, especially if they were Sloopers like me. ( _I'm a "like to punch up", guy._ )
So now I am stuck with no thrill to steal at all and feel like a pure griefer when I do. The simple piratedream of amassing a teasure is gone. I already own it.
And an effective goldsink does not exist. Buying dozen of recolors which will clutter my inventory to no end? No thanks. I would so love to spend it all on *allegiance* but alas... 😏 this looks like it won't happen.
And just like that... I am done with everything I want. I would like the golden bones... instead of 20 million gold.
The one thing I cannot get currently without feeling like a p°thet°c loser... and the other gold is stuck with me forever, ironically.
      Not cool.

Sadly this "subject matter" has also been the norm for a very long time, it in its self is tiering. This game will never live up to what the "community" wants EVER. I play ALOT of games and rare have been one of the biggest advocates for trying to shape the game to its playerbase, but people are never happy. The FOMO lore content was a great example of this, people hated missing out while also saying they had no reason to log in. People who advocated for this game contedict themselves soooo much. Every person now seems to want to fix the game and seem to act like they know more then the actual creators. Calling the core enjoyment people get out of this the honeymoon phase is short sighted, the honeymoon phase IS the game and for a lot of people that's enough. Content creators act like they are the voice of the community but sorry you guys play this for a job so ofc its going to get stale. I genuinely think the only negative plaguing this game is optimisation and stability, it needs to be addressed soon. I still have to give rare some credit for making a first of its kind game. Developers obviously tend to build on top of outdated software/code to keep it alive for so long, can't imagine how hard it must be.
All I'm saying is I'm tired of constant negetvity. I know it is said as criticism and it gives you reasons to make videos; its all I've heard for years and yet its one of the most fun I've had in gaming.

"Save the magic of Sea of Thieves" is such a good note to end on. It really is a magical experience, like you've been whisked away to another world, and there is so much world for you to see. Us who've been playing forever might not feel that way, but to a new player, they usually have the same reaction - utter bewilderment, and stunned with the thrill of adventure. Because of what Rare has built. They, I'm sure, recognize they have made something very special, and I'm sure, are fillled with stress, quite often, on how to continue making it something special, for everyone.

-Guilds up to 500 members per guild. Make it an ACTUAL community.
-Make Sea Dogs into SOMETHING. A huge social area with mini games or a cool in-game trading market would be incredible.
-Drop old gen support and get some better servers. Please. This will fix so many issues.
-Provide new experiences like fighting sea monsters or going on quests to deliver fugitive NPCs across the seas while being hunted by players. Something genuinely new and fresh.
The game is so fun but give people a reason to STAY!
Edit: one more cool idea I’ve seen is the ability to DEFEND SEA FORTS a la hourglass style. Take over a fort, allow people to dive to you and try to destroy it. If you successfully defend you get a huge payout.

The issue with Sea of Thieves is that it's a gorgeous game that feels empty.
There is content, but the content is the same 3 quests over and over again with different factions to level up.

For as much as I love pirates, I do not trust Rare being capable of handling this game properly anymore. The Pirates of the Caribbean collab was it's peak and we're never getting back to that. The old advice of "if it's not broke, don't fix it" speaks volumes here. The devs need to stop updating / changing things for the sake of just changing / adding things - but instead, actually fix the things that aren't working. We don't need a swath of new content / features every few months, we need what exists to be perfected.
Also, we don't need more excuses to engage in PvP (like "Skull of Siren Song" voyage for example). There are plenty of opportunities to get into PvP for those who want it, and adding all of the new content just taxes the servers ---> which leads to the maximum number of ships per server being dropped ---> which leads to less players on a server ---> which ultimately leads to fewer organic PvP encounters.
TL;DR: in my opinion, it's time to cut the fat and fix what's broken - do that, and players will come, and stay.
P.S. It's also time text-search-filters for clothing/vanity and ship livery parts becomes a thing in the menus. Trying to put on a ship livery shouldn't take 10 min of scrolling through hundreds of parts when a filter could sort it down for you.

Yes, I agree. It seems like they are constently trying to recreate the haydays of the skelly forts when everybody were trying to server hop^and engage in a free for all for those forts. Like op said, stop trying to create excuses for forced PVP, and please, please review the respawn mechanic. I hate it when I sink a ship after 20 minutes of intense battle just to see it coming back for a rematch 5 minutes later. Winning a fight should mean something.

@@pyerack I think it might be true short term; content updates probably bring small bumps in the players count, probably former regular players coming back for a couple weeks and then leaving again until the next update (or never), but the accumulation of unfixed problems results in a slow but steady erosion of their player base that will eventually kill the game for good.

The main issue here is that Rare isn't adding any events during seasons other than community or 2x gold weekend, there needs to be some incentive for players to engage and play SOT on a regular basis, but when Rare releases seasons with very lackluster content, consistently bad stability issues and horrendous bugs/glitches, it's very hard especially for the OG SOT playerbase to keep coming back. Rare needs to make drastic changes to SOT whether it's the seasonal model or something else I don't know, but a change is needed and quick

Adventures would have been better made as Tall Tales, even if they limited them to safer seas, so anyone wanting to do them had a special instance of the server.

I keep seeing people say "just dont gather loot for 3 hours without selling" like that makes a difference at all. Ignoring the fact that sometimes we get destroyed after grabbing a single chest and cant do a damn thing about it because somebody with over 100x your playtime is killing you constantly. and even if you DO learn to be pretty good, its completely unreasonable to expect a casual player to beat that person ever. to compare it to another game, one that has ONLY PvP: I play overwatch. I'm ranked high-Plat, meaning im slightly above average. Not a single person in the world would ever expect me to stand up against a Grandmaster player, much less try to learn the game against them. but it seems to me that if you bring up that sentiment when discussing SoT, those better players come out the woodwork and start calling you a baby for wanting a casual game that you can maybe sometimes fight in.

Honestly my experience is get good at the Hourglass grind. There's some great players who will sink you, but if you get some practice in Hourglass you'll get better at holding your ground and fighting ship to ship, and it gives you a skill edge over a lot of players in the high seas. Yes you can get unlucky and face sweats still in the high seas, but good Hourglass skills gives you an advantage over 80% of the players who don't fight PvP regularly, so use the mode to hone your skills.
The second is just learning how to run and waste an enemy's energy and time in a chase. I've been chased by bigger crews and sailed against the wind, sailed into the Devil's Roar, into storms and ghost fleets; just any mutual hazard where a sloop can out maneuver a brig or galleon. Yes they'll call you names for running from a fight, but why take it personally? Using the environment and risks in it to escape a fight can be a great feeling to out-sail an opponent and reach safety.
To your criticism though, spawn times in the game can be broken terribly. Especially on Xbox One and low end PC's, it is possible to be stuck waiting for the Ferry to load while your enemy has had a chance to turn your ship into Swiss cheese. The hit reg problems also make PvP not always a fair fight too, let alone encountering cheaters. A sudden server disconnect can decide a fight. While my tips help in a lot of cases, the game being buggy and broken can derail that still and as the video address is a core thing that needs to be fixed.

    • @ultmateragnarok8376
      @ultmateragnarok8376 2 місяці тому +47

This drove away so much of the player variety, too. I remember early on in the game's life, just after release, you would encounter all sorts of people. Most ships that approached you weren't hostile, and even when they were it was never predictable, with everyone so inexperienced any strategy was on the table, making it sometimes truly enjoyable to be attacked by people with the most ridiculous of plans. But that was the smaller side - you encountered all sorts of friendly crews, people just stopping by to say hello, or the fun ones dragging you into sword duels on the rigging or their tea-collecting navy roleplay or whatever other things they'd have. But when you try to do any of that, or try to ignore interaction entirely, and you instead encounter the same crews repeatedly who just want to seek you out and kill you for no reason other than to kill people, it ruins a lot of that fun, and people leave. Then there's proportionally more people doing their endless hunt and less people buffering them from the remaining ones not doing that, and so on and so forth until they're pretty much all that's left alongside the stubborn ones who stay in spite of them. It feels so much worse to lose hours of effort and stacking than it feels good to sink someone doing that, and that's a problem the game has never escaped.
At its core, it's the session-based gameplay - if you had to work up to get the weapons and ship necessary to hunt someone down, this would have basically not been a problem at the start. People would choose their battles, and fear losing their weapons if they're fought back against in the same way the people collecing money would fear losing their current haul, and in the meantime while they're continuing to gather they would gain a further weapon advantage. It would feel good to overcome a superior opponent, and you would lose your massive hauls less often. But that wasn't what Rare wanted, and this is what it got us.

THANK YOU for finally speaking up to say things that needed to be said. Too often-almost all the time, really-content creators, whether videos or podcasts, want to stay on everyone’s good side and try to “keep it positive,” which tends to be even more irritating as it gives the impression that they’re serving Rare rather than the community by avoiding certain topics with the excuse that “yeah, but everyone already knows that, so there’s no point in talking about it.” It’s not a dead game, but its soul is certainly dying when, as a player, you feel that the community loves this game more than its creators do, judging by the promises made/kept/not kept. The feeling of betrayal started with the seasons; the video where they assured us we’d still get as much content as with monthly updates but condensed into three months. Nonsense. We’re getting less and less, and of worsening quality; sometimes you wonder if they even play the game, the proposals are so out of sync with player expectations. And to top it off, with the captaincy, you’re asked to start all over again, with minor tweaks, even if you’ve already maxed out things you don’t want to redo. The narrative world makes no sense-not talking about the “mysteries” here, just basic writing flaws that even a simple ChatGPT prompt could fix. Adventures promised to fill this lack of storytelling but were once again started and then abandoned as if by amateurs, and so on. I get that, yes, it’s a “free” live service, but no, we buy the game with the promise of a live service experience, with the promise of evolving for the better. All we do in Sea of Thieves is hope, season after season, to get content for the players and not content that checks a box for the studio like, “that’s done, we’ve provided a season.” I buy as much as possible in the emporium, not even out of love for the cosmetics but to support Rare in its model. If none of this is working, it’s time to change strategy. In fact, I think we’re all waiting for this-a wake-up call and some transparency. For someone to speak up and say, “We’ve heard you, we understand, give us some time to show you that we’re still here.” And honestly, the little “mysteries” like “we can’t talk about what’s coming, but it’s going to be amazing” worked for a few years; now we’ve understood that generally there’s NOTHING. Stop building hype around what’s not there and start building hype around what actually is. That would be a first step. I also have to add, to this feeling of lost trust, the overall management of the game’s image. Banning a player and setting up resources to repeatedly track and block them or harm them as a content creator raises huge questions about “content exploitation” in their game for creators. There are also extremely questionable waves of bans against which players can do nothing, leaving me hesitant even to try in PvP, just in case my lag gets mistaken for teleporting, etc. Or getting a ban (which isn’t even an actual ban), at the same time as a bunch of other players on Twitch, without ever receiving any explanation, context, or apology. There’s a massive loss of trust in their ability to manage, envision, and deliver. It’s unfortunate, but that’s why this video is valuable-now they know it’s gotten to the point where even Captain Falcore is addressing it on his channel. The time has come to take action.

The feeling of betrayal and broken promises is older than that. I remember days just after launch, when they added the sloop and said they would not make concessions to solo players, that if you chose to play a game intended for a minimum of four alone then you would deal with challenges made for a minimum of four, alone. Rare cannot get the balance right between too easy and too grindy:
Skull of siren song commendations are way to easy to complete, so all dedicated players are already done with them.
Guilds and Hourglass don't offer enough rewards for the long grind one has to do. Thus many players don't bother with it. (Season 13 has helped the servant faction a fair bit in that regard, but I feel like there should be some reward every 20 to 50 levels. Not every 100 to 200).
For the skull of siren song rare needs to
    1. Make the voyage spawn less often, so it's more like a FoF in rarety.
    2. Make new rewards so player play it again.
    3. Make the voyage despawn after a certain timer, so it doesn't stay active forever

I was never really drawn to the PvP aspect-not because I couldn't perform well, but because I just couldn't bring myself to care enough to stay invested. I found myself wanting to log out instead. If I last more than an hour I'll have cleaned one island of loot with a sizable haul only for me to be ganged up on and stuck in a spawn loop being killed while in the spawn animation. To then spend another hour clearing a combat shrine only to be killed after finishing the boss by a group of players and spawn camped by the statue unable to warp to my ship because they can knock me off the hold interact to warp, and they spawn faster than I can fight them off. I was an avid player of SoT since the Open Beta. When the game launched I'd recently left an 11-year stint working on a historical replica tall ship quite similar to SoT's galleons. While obviously simplified, I could apply my actual sailing skills and training to the game and be effective. Essentially SoT became my "methadone," easing me off the nautical life I *still* miss now. I soon had a regular group of friends to sail with, but I poured untold hundreds of hours into solo slooping. I just loved sailing around, sightseeing while scoping out beaches for "shinies," and even just hanging out by the rail and watching the waves. My friends have all long, long since moved on -- one of them primarily due to disenchantment with the in-game store- - and I haven't reached 100 Renown for three seasons running. At heart, I'm a solo slooper, and over the years my "squirrel" style of play -- avoiding conflict, rigorous attention to my surroundings, making alliances, and, yes, skillful sailing to escape or frustrate pursuers -- have been *systematically* whittled away. Between inescapable brigandines, hostile players potentially emerging from portals or--even worse--popping out out of the sea right offshore, and the loss of the ultimate denial of satisfaction to enemies--sailing your treasure into the red sea, everything, EVERYTHING is constantly pushing toward confrontation. And if you retreat to Safe Seas, you take a massive hit in rewards, lose out on events, and can't even enjoy, much less improve, your captaincy! Until the Shrouded Ghost entered the game, I obsessively collected every commendation and every possible doubloon. In hindsight, I begrudgingly appreciate the impossibility of finding the Ghost for breaking the game's spell over me. That's when I started drifting away. The game does not *want* me anymore. It wants the toxic "sweatlords," and it's harder and harder to overcome that.

As a Vanguard who stopped playing a few months ago, thank you for this video. This game above any was my heart. I seemingly lived on this game at times. I have children who were raised playing it. The aim in the start of the game was a Pirate world where we were pushed to get along and meet new people. I met more people on this game than any I can recall in those times. There was a clear focus to PvP. I have no beef with PvP. It helped the game grow. But the players who didn't enjoy it were abandoned. There were story modes and even safer seas that were designed and offered some good content. They had very harsh penalties for anyone who was not going to sail open seas. Open seas became the place where PvP players who were good but not part of the cheaters or top 10 percent in ranking went to PvP. The new game destroyed solo slooping for most. Again, please understand, I like PvP. I just do not like it all the time. If I want to play the game with my 12 year old, I do not want to have to be on a sloop and face 2 Gallys and 2 Brigs in a server who are just seeking PvP, if I wish to try out different new events. I love this game. My experience is not exclusive. I have a list of at minimum 20 plus friends who were daily players and cannot jump on without a 3-4 person crew without being mobbed before completing 1 new event, or even an old one. I love watching PvP. I loved Arena. If we look at this like a sport, 8 out of 10 of the referees calls in the last few years were for PvP modes and incentives. I used to enjoy PvP. Now it is all there is. The content was never expanded because all resources were being applied to matchmaking and regulating PvP scenarios. A good story was forgotten and left behind for streaming views to hype up new events that die after a week or so. And now, PvP is the only streaming content or game modes. Safer Seas was just an expanded tutorial. If PvP is that immensely popular and the PvE, story loving, family folk are that outnumbered, then why not give a full version of safer seas and leave the open seas to the blood thirsty lot? I will tell you why. The story loving, explorative, outgoing, friendly people who have always loved this game are just Chum for the sharks now. The Devs need to chum the waters or PvP modes will continue to die because this game was never enjoyed by the CoD fans until the loyal fans were turned to chum for views and new modes. I have watched this channel and the stream for years. I have never seen Cptn Falcore make fun of someone, spawn camp, be malicious, exploit, or PvP in an unsportsman manner. Thanks for always representing all the players Captain. The lack of meaty content led to PvP being the only reasonable solution to boredom for many. Please do not take this as bitching about the PvP community. I love that base as well. I just wanna see some balance again and maybe some updates that focus on something besides sneaking and murdering eachother. I know pirates are pirates. I expect some skullduggery. But I do miss this game when it was balanced and fun for all. Mad love to all players and I hope your sessions are long, fruitful, and without crashes. May the wind be with ya.

Often times the line between "i don't enjoy the PvP" and "I'm not good at the PvP" is muddied and blurred. One confused for the other, or the other assumed due to the former.
The fact of the matter is most players don't have a place to "become" better. A structured environment for "practice", "learning" and "improvement". I think 50% of the players who currently despise PvP won't have such an issue against it if they had room to grow at it. Trust me, you can get good at it and still hate it (I'm one of them), but ultimately majority of the time alot of the hate comes from having no control over your own play session.
I think because there is that blurred line of "don't enjoy" vs "not good at", it's not exactly appropriate to fix the game for the "don't enjoy" until we bolden that line to better make it clear on who is who. That means making entering the PvP space more accessible/approachable to the newer and more skittish pirates out there. That's why safer seas where you could have friends teach you in privet would be such a good thing. It'd be a controlled environment with people you trust. That's the goal. Plus there are events and prizes that leave out many countries as we're not able to participate :( I really hope they find a steady course. Oh, and I really miss when you had to actually DO something to earn the rewards in some events (grogmanay, halloween, etc.), now you just have to login to get them.

I played Sea of thieves for a bit with a friend, but it just lacked a depth that we were both looking for. We love our long progression based live-service games, and all the content in Sea of Thieves felt like it had this... lack of depth? A lot of content starts and ends really quickly, while not having a lot of connecting tissue between them. Plus the rewards just being gold doesn't feel that great because you just buy cosmetics with them. Now I understand that's a design choice by the developers, that a 1 hour player and a 500 hour player functionally have no difference, but it really was a turn off to have a big, tense voyage with all of our loot, only to cash it in for... what felt like nothing?

Getting back into it in December 2024 it's absolutely wild the difference. The lag. The plethora of bugs. The completely dead game unable to break 10k congruent players in steam. Good thing they keep prioritizing micro transactions! Soon their play base will be so negligent nothing they can do will bring it back. I know many don’t like Destiny, but with destiny we knew exactly what we’re getting and what to be excited about whether it be new raids or dungeons and open worlds. SoT as an open world game could easily benefit from this and have events that change the map from season to season with story implications.

I can’t even play sea of thieves anymore. I took a week break from sot to finish red dead II(best story game I’ve ever played.) and try cod bo6. Playing a fps like cod after playing sot is like going from a hand-me-down rinky-dink tricycle to a lambo. I can’t even describe my recent experiences with sot. Moving around the environment becomes a task with sot. The gun play is completely nonsensical with the whole delay between weapon switching. I have taken many breaks in my time with sot but I don’t think I’ll be returning from this one and it’s not like I wanted to take a break. The game has just whittled away to unplayable and the devs can’t help but make it worse every single update. I’ve accomplished most of my goals in sot and just trying to play it for fun isn’t the same anymore. I used to blame it on my Xbox one but even with my series x I realize it really is just not worth any time. It kinda hurts to say that too because I love sot and for the longest time that was the game that I could always fall on if another game got boring. Now it’s just nothing. I don’t even know what they need to do but whatever it is they have to do it quick because if they don’t, people will stop playing and Microsoft will kill it. Sot has unlimited potential and they seriously should capitalize on it because right now it is still just a concept.

I am playing twice a week, since the launch. In the beginning almost daily, but other games exist. And honestly, I am pretty happy right now with the general content delivery. The sandbox has enough content for anyone, even veterans like me, to do. I am still missing some veil voyages, Siren Song can be done while traveling to other means, just like any bottled quests who are actually worth the effort now, same goes for the shipwrecks. The meg is attacking again (I remember times when it almost never showed up for months) and holds loot worth the effort, although we usually ignore it because we are on the way to even better means most of the time. The new weapons are fun to use and shake up the meta, just as intended, the harpoon gun is a fun a fast travel item on islands. Session 14 brought enough new content even after disabling the tuck emotes and traps, and if these are delivered ongoing troughout the session, that is an even better release circle than one big bang once every 3 months.
Yes, sometimes the game lags at the moment, but what games doesn't? They come, they go, that is a circle troughout the years. A patch fixes many lags, a new session brings new lags, a patch fixes them. Common live service game routine. It happened more often than usual, but that's why they are building a whole new team just for that. And that takes time to take effect, that team needs to learn first. Do not expect any big impacts in the first 6 months.
I play this game twice a week for some years now, and I never really felt like the game is more unstable or less playable than any other game. I still prefer it over most other multiplayer games in this genre with the friends I play it with. It is the perfect game for our crew still.

I agree. I can only imagine that the views in the video are only true for those who play hours and hours every day of their lives. Of course you're going to get bored or disappointed after all that time. Playing twice a week or so (which actually seems like a lot to me) is going to keep the "honeymoon period" going for longer. I've been playing about that amount (sometimes more) since 2020, and I still have fun with the game. I feel like there's always stuff to do, old and new. I'm amazed that this game that I only had to buy *once* four years ago (for less than the price of only one night at the movies with the family) keeps re-inventing itself and becoming a new game every few months, while also maintaining the same essential feel it originally did, the world of Sea of Thieves that I first fell in love with.
I dunno. I'm just some dude. My first game video game to play was Pong in the 1970s, and I thought Zelda II was the end-all of video games when it came out in 1987. That a game like Sea of Thieves even exists blows my mind. It's the only game that made me watch videos about it and become fans of Falcore, Fuzzy, Hitbo, Kraken, and the rest. I feel like I'm both the audience for these videos (since I enjoy them so much) but also absolutely not the audience for these videos (since they often confuse me).

As a casual player myself, I can see both sides. But for me, like you, there are tons for me to do. I've been grinding OOS since 2022 and absolutely loving it. Since my laptop died, I haven't been playing since mid season 12 so I cannot say anything about the instability. And the new and added quests was a much needed refresh, the trinkets you get from skeleton lords (the voodoo dolls and the gally ship toys) are some of my favorite loot along with the orbs. There is still tons for us casuals to do. But I understand that those who are able to play this game religiously can feel like they're forgotten (complete all 5 It's a Pirates Life and accomodations within one day for example) but I think that's why when Captaincy came out the grind was so high and ludicrous for us casuals was to keep the hardcore religious players happy bc the grind is higher.
As for gilds, I'm not sure how to fix that. I have like 3-4 friends that I occasionally play with so we have our own gold that's mixed with a SOT community and my own. So the 25 player limit isn't even full. But I get that there are sub sot communities that are larger than that. I know Rare won't do it, but if there was a way to like have 2 ships of the same guild on servers (like brig sloop or gally and sloop) could add some insensitive. Like 6 ships on the server 3 different guilds at max on the server. (Duly noted idk the max server size of player ships and types rn). How this would work, is probably like dives in Hourglass. Like you go to the captain table and a little pop up on the captains book will say like "Another ship on your guild is currently playing, dive to join them?" And you can either accept for deny. If you accept, dive like normal and you pop up in the server several squares away from the other guild ship that way either you can team up to do world events or other voyages.
But I do agree that they need to bring back the little events like community day back. Like when the trade routes were introduced and they had extra rewards and xp if you were a merchant or a reaper. That was fun. Do more of those!

As someone who bought sea of thieves 3 days ago, I already love the game a lot but I can definitely see its flaws. For me it feels slightly lacking in content due to the unique progression style of the game, but the biggest problem I can think of for me is the guns not firing and the black screening. The hourglass game mode is full of sweats who destroy me and my friends, but when we go to the normal mode my friends get bored because we can’t find people. Whenever I do find people I’m solo slooping and get boarded and sunk super easily (partly due to my lack of skill and also partly due to the fighting mechanics). The ability to one shot with the blunderbuss is cool but I can never get it off due to the gun not shooting or my aim being trash. Yet when I don’t get sweats in my lobby trying to kill me, I can get all the treasure I want without a challenge (which makes it feel invaluable), but then it doesn’t mean much due to the uselessness of gold apart from cosmetics. I understand why they allow everyone the same weapons, but I also feel like it is one of the reasons why gold doesn’t feel as valuable as it should. Moral of the story is that I like the game and want to play it with friends, but the bugs are frustrating and my friends aren’t fans of the progression style so they don’t play often.

Alright, my idea for the game. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I'd like adventures to come back. I think they switched things up between seasons, but I have to agree, the time-limited/monthly system didn't help adventures last long, so I suggest they make them event based: say an event rolls up introducing a world change, one or two even three adventures could be added to explain why said world change is occurring and maybe add some lore. This could alternate between main story tie-ins events the would be replayed later on and random reoccurring events that would pop up occasional to keep the game, you could even have seasonal event tied to events like Festival of the Damned, Giving, fight night and more. But how would your replay some adventures? Umbra, she would have met other chronicles who've set up shop on every outpost and you can visit them replay a previous adventure, either by gaining temporary access to the Sea of the Damned to experience the events for yourself, the Sea of the Damned being a land of memories after all or they're give you a ferryman's lantern to visit the islands and relive the events without too much of the hassle. If they won't make new adventures, they could at least use this method to bring back the old ones so newcomers can experience and understand the story.
But that's just my idea. Think what you will of it.

    Captain Falcore The Movie
    Episode 7
“Don’t worry, I have connections” Mr. Falcore said.
Captain Falcore flew away to old faithful island (his favorite island). There he found strange inhabitants. They were beautiful, and they were buccaneers. “Perfect” caption falcy said as he kissed their moist belly buttons. “Come with me” he said. They walked to the water, but suddenly, fishstick (from Fortnite) grabbed one of the buccaneers from the water and dragged him down. His screams of agony ceased as his lungs filled with water, ripping the life from his now cold, limp body.
“Oh no!” The falcon man said! “Everyone hide in your sea of thieves season 14 chest disguises!”
It didn’t work. The Fortnite was getting closer. Captain Falcore must use a dark power, one he swore never to use again.
Captain falcon cranked 90s. He thought he was winning, but the Fortnite was a dexterous adversary. He too was building. Soon the build battle encompassed the entirety of old faithful island. The Falconman had no choice but to detonate the nuclear bomb on old faithful island. Old faithful was destroyed, and symbolically destroying the mob’s faith in the falcon man. They wanted their money back, and they wanted it back now.

I was excited, I wanted to use these new tools, and then half didnt make it into live, and the other were pulled, leaving us with worse performance, and nothing new. I will be retiring my sea legs until rare does meaningful fixes to not only the game, but their development cycle. Something I have little hope for.

I’m seeing a lot of people talking about g about arena, I didn’t have the game during arena days, but I feel like an easy solution would be to make it similar to hourglass, but imagine a system where you get a bigger circle than hourglass pvp, but you also get different mini game modes (capture the flag, but it’s a skull or something, naval TDM, on foot TDM) with just a set timer before the game switches, you can use the “scuttle and change seas” to get back to adventure, and make it so new players are constantly able to join, so the smaller a server is, say 6 galleons worth of players max, you’re still part of your crew, but it divides teams to make them as fair as possible, and the fewer players on a server, the higher priority it has to get more players to join.
TLDR: So it’s just a constant rotation of games with balanced teams and the ability for anyone to join at any time, and their ship will just pop up like it’s hourglass, leaving using a crew vote

Arena could be a PVP area around Sea Dog Tavern and have it a king of the Hill type capture and hold mechanic. Not a separated instanced thing like the Arena used to be. Make it worth more for smaller ships to hold and have seasonal rewards alongside the Plunder Pass to make it fresh. People not as savvy with PVP can avoid it and it may also make Reaper's Hideout a little more spicy to turn in at too. The entire center of the map would become PVP focused yet still an open sandbox as a whole.
And please Rare, do something with The Devil's Roar. Make it worthwhile to go there again. Ashen Chest of Fortune or something at Molten Sands. Make it player activated like FotD (maybe with a cooldown so it can't be stacked/farmed)

One interesting things about SOT and other lore following games in how the story changes and evolves over time, which then updates the world. You then have new and returning players who miss that more simplistic original story and mechanics which made it accessible and engaging. I come back every few months and have to get up to speed with everything, where I'd rather continue tall tales etc.

  • @Hadeks_Marow

I have NEVER met a SINGLE person who isn't a content creator or isn't a die-hard SoT player who actually likes talltales. They are boring, require the player to engage in "reading" and "puzzle solving". The pacing is slow. The story is uninteresting. The actual "cinematics" are only cool in a vacuum, which we don't live in and are very small/nothing special when compared to most other games cinematics/set-pieces (mostly referring to single player games).
To the casual player, there is nothing enjoyable about talltales. People hear "pirate game" and they come for swashbuckling and ship battles. And then they join just to find out it's just a First-Person Shooter with in-your-face gunplay _(worst kind of gunplay)_ where the shootouts might as well be in a school hallway (cause the ships are small and no cover/room for movement).
The biggest problem is SoT has an identity crisis. That's why it doesn't have anything really to do. It wants to be a Pirate Game but its pirate combat might as well be CoD/CoD zombies. It wants to be a PvP game but the PvP scares players off because the combat mechanics are annoying so rare disincentifies it by PvE events and making the ships annoying to stock supplies with and have only 5 ships per server max. It wants to be a PvE game but has no sense of progression because they don't want to make the game unbalanced for PvP so all reward are cosmetics, regardless of if you already locked in the look for everything or not. It wants to be a sandbox but the sandbox is kinda just. . . underwhelming where most you can actually do to effect the world is just "loot" and "kill very VERY basic AI programming". All of this combined with commendations that are designed to be tedious because the one thing this game ACTUALLY wants to be is a games-as-a-service/live-service title, which, itself, isn't an actual form of "identity".

I started playing SoT around August of 2020. Everyone was locked in and my friends had told me about it, so I bought it and began playing with them. I was very quickly whisked away by the wonders of this world, having the insane experience of being shown the Pirate Legend hideout on day one, by a guy who was still wearing sailor clothes. It took me a while to pick up on the ways of the world beneath the simple-seeming voyages, but once I had figured it out the game kept me for about three years. I've poured hundreds of hours into the game, and while I wasn't ever the best and missed out on plenty of major events, I still felt like I had a place. Once the seasons were added, with captaincy, and even the newer collaboration tall tales, the game started to lose its charm. I'm still enamored with the original world, the four regions with the pirate lord tall tales, the deep sea exploration of uncharted islands like k-9 and whatever the other one was. Hell, I had the entire map memorized for a good while, being able to tell what an island was from a good distance. I loved sailing around, even though it became tedious. Now that diving exists? I feel like it takes away from the world I once knew. That was something only shown off by skeleton ships, vessels of the dead surfacing to tear you and your ship a new one. But now it was as simple as penning a destination down on your table? It feels wrong, looking at all the new things. I wasn't excited for the newer weapons either. The core four weapons felt like a solid foundation that didn't and shouldn't need expansion. (That part is just my opinion, as is all of this, but I'm truly not fond of the expansion on weapons even though I love weapon variety in other games). I uninstalled the game October of this year, once I saw that they added what to me looked like stealth emotes, where you could move around in a chest or barrel. It felt wrong already having the ability to dress in all black and lay down in a tiny nook on a ship, but to me that seemed like a different level of just... unsavory gameplay. I'm out of touch now, for the most part, with Sea of Thieves, but occasionally gameplay pops up in my feeds. It just looks so different from what I used to know. Especially with whatever the grappling harpoon is.
I loved this game a lot. I still love its world. But it feels bloated now. Even things that should be considered part of the game, such as the expansions on the reapers hideout and legend hideout seem odd, the hourglass parts of it at least. The game feels barred to me, especially as a solo player. I'm not good with combat, never have been with this game, but it feels as though those who didn't experience arena with friends or do bloodlusted voyages got left behind when it comes to pvp. Or I'm just bad, which is probably the case, but it doesn't help that pvp was only pushed and pushed and pushed into the game more and more with all the quality of life editions that made things faster. It seemed as though Rare wanted people to enjoy less of the scenery and world and instead they wanted people to just fight.
I think the true death of my love for the game itself was the Monkey Island tall tale series. Linear stories in games is something I love, I've replayed plenty of stories and campaigns because I enjoyed the singleplayer aspect and world building most provide. But those tall tales shattered me. And only a portion of it was due to the content. I think the actual activities were fine, but I found the overall tall tales to feel soulless and draining to play through. It didn't feel like I was playing a game with them. Those left the worst taste in my mouth before I departed, due to how unfinished they felt compared to the rest of the game, especially the tall tale series that came before.
Anyway, if you've taken the time to read all that, thank you. I would like to tack on a reminder that I still love the world of SoT. It's beautiful, it has and hopefully always will be, but the game is starting to get bloated. I missed out on many things, and perhaps that's why I can't bring myself to stick around like other veterans of the game, even if I'm only a veteran by time and not skill. But the world and concepts have stuck with me, and will stick with me. Rare made an amazing world, a truly unique experience that I will be hard pressed to see replicated on the seas in a similar format. I don't want it to die out, so I thank those of the old community, the only real lifeblood the game has in its playerbase. You folks are those that keep this ship afloat, even if our captains are a little misguided now.

SoT was Rare's attempt to defy the image of your typical GaaS game.
I think for the most part they've always made it stand out and showed passion in ways that felt unique.
Those first 3-4 years felt really special but I just don't think games like this, published in an industry such as the one we have right now, have a net positive effect on its dev studio.
I genuinely don't know if SoT is good for Rare anymore. I don't know if the GaaS model is good for Rare anymore.
All of this feels like a short sighted model that doesn't benefit generation spanning support from a single developer,
who used to have a reputation for their vast and diverse catalogue of colorful games.
Every pirate emporium update feels like a last resort effort to keep their doors open and to keep Xbox at bay for another year.
Every season feels like an entire team of people struggling to re-invent support for the foundation of something that already exists,
when that same time could've been spend creating something new and special.
I miss the old Rare. I don't miss it the way that old Banjo or DKC fans miss it.
I miss it for the sake of those developers that have so much potential and shouldn't be confined to an online game that hasn't felt unique since roughly 10 fotm like Lethal Company.
I don't even need a new Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country, Viva Pinata or Grabbed By The Ghoulies. I don't even need Yooka-Laylee.
I just want Rare to make "Rareware". I wanna see the passion and diversity of this studio again.

i'm gonna be honest, i disagree with most of your points (as usual). you say the playerbase aren't the ones getting bored, the developers are, then turn around and say the updates are shallow and don't bring enough content to the game. this game has SO MUCH content already - there is NOTHING stopping ANYONE from playing and enjoying the content for literal YEARS. the ONLY thing to be worried about with SoT are the performance issues and bugs/delays with majour updates - both of which could be easily fixed by shifting majour content updates away from being synced with Season releases. keep Seasons around, and monthly patches with Emporium and Outpost drops, but release the actual content updates whenever they're ready instead of tying it directly to seasons

Its 113 GB now. And you dont feel it.
6 years and I finally pulled the plug and uninstalled. The state of the game is terrible. New features and shit they add are meaningless if the servers suck and you're stuttering around and not enjoying the experience.
We're still locked at 5 (or 6 is it? They change this constantly without telling) ships per server. They even lowered the spawning so you cant get full galleons anymore. It will be a mix of mostly sloops and maybe a brig or galley if you're lucky.
They overpowered the sloop and made the multi-crew Galleon a slog.
I dunno. Imo, Id rather pay for or have them launch Sea of Thieves 2:
    -UE 5.5
    -Bigger world.
    -Better ships.
    -Better ship customization
-A social hub where players can dock their ships, play games (poker/dice - gamble), form crews, socialize, advertise for guilds.
-Bigger guilds (wtf were they thinking at a 24 player cap or whatever? My guild has to run 3 just to keep people in).
    -Guild only activities.
Drop the low-gen support. The old xbox prolly wont run this game as well anyways.
The biggest problem they made for themselves was water physics. Its why everything is bottlenecked. And its a shame. Hope UE 5.5 upgrade could help them with that..
But they wont do it. Cause I guess Microsoft doesnt care?
