I purchased a race chip for my Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2.5td a few years back. It cured the terrible turbo lag the vehicle had from the factory, which is what the chip was bought for, and made it great to drive. One downside - the diesel filter did not particularly like the increased fuel pressure, so the paper element inside kept collapsing. So in a nutshell, the two week development period per vehicle doesn’t quite cover everything.

A few years ago I put one of these tuning box things in a Ford Focus 2.0 tdci. It was great for a while, but started developing stating problems. I called the AA out to have a look when it broke down at work and they diagnosed a EGR valve problem. I took the tuning box out, and had no problems immediately afterwards. Put it back in and a few days later started developing the same problems again. I'm not a mechanic, so don't know the technicals here, but that is my experience with a tuning box. Would certainly not install one in my 335d after that experience.

2-3 year RaceChip user here. Firstly the pros: Bought one for my wife's JagXF2.2d(190hp400nm). It should give a theoretical maximum 240hp500nm. You definetely feel the extra torque. It's not a HUGE difference, but it's enough for you to actually feel it. Fuel economy works too, but only as long as you actively drive eco. On a 130 km extra urban trip I drove with 80-120 kph speeds and got a 5.1l/100km. That's 1.9TDI numbers on a ~200hp 2 tonnes car. But if you drive sporty, it will eat more fuel than before chip.
The bad: it's isolated to my car I think. I have to unplug it during winter because it makes the car act weird. It pretty often occurs than when I step on the gas, there's no boost for a second or so... and then BAM, full 500nm! Rear wheels spinning, screeching, pedestrians looking at me. Not what I want on a winter morning at 7am. I think the car's ecu has a warmup profile for when it's really cold outside and the chip doesn't know what to do and goes all crazy. Or maybe it just doesn't work when it's freezing outside.

    • @afrperformance6322
      @afrperformance6322 5 років тому +6

Your correct the car has 100s of different maps for different driving conditions , different atmospheric pressure, temps. The tuning box can only change sensor values it doesn't think about all the other maps needed for safety it changes everything can sometimes be very bad.

Okay so let me put this all in a nutshell for anyone who is still confused between going for a performance chip or software reflash
Racing chip is off shelf performance chip thats made for a plug and play purpose
This means its a entry level way of doing software
Benching/reflash of the actual ECU gives you more access to alterations which means that you adjust your software to make full use of any bolt on mod such as Downpipe, Intake, Full Exhaust, Big Turbo/Hybrid Turbo, bigger HPFP and so forth
Performance chips are limited to making full use of bolt on mods so therefor you will NOT obtain the best results when using it with extra mods
If you inly want software with stock components then the performance chip will be perfectly fine
For the next level guys such as myself who enjoys modding the actual motor with bolt ons then software is your only way forward if you want the best results

Just completed a 4 year Uni study into automotive engineering: This seems like bullshit to me, the best thing they could be doing is tricking the ECU to think there is lambda 1 instead of 1.2 or smh. The implications if an engine goes just slightly wrong, has a litre of crappy fuel one day, and you're asking for issues. There are so many reasons to dyno every car not to make one chip for every car if you want the best out of it. Since every engine is different OEMs give some headroom for the stock map and also test it before it gets sold. Saying that one car can map every other is bs.

I was sceptical aswell, I bought one for my 208 GTi and sadly had a horrible experience. It made the car think it was constantly overheating and thus putting itself into limp mode. (quite a scary feeling)
I got rid of it after it happened every single time I drove it for more than 10 minutes. Luckily I purchased the cheapest option, still 200 euros down the drain though.

    • @RADICALparkour
      @RADICALparkour 5 років тому +2

@@jefhallo5566 Yo, so just for future reference for yourself (I'm on my fourth heavily modified vehicle), there are many steps to ensure you've done before affecting your ECU tune (chip, Dyno or road tune), the most important being health checks of your engine, tuning is relatively inexpensive per vehicle but the vehicle maintenance before and after is crucial to a long life after a tune. Get a major service (the two year one) regardless of when your last service was, get your belts done if you can't remember when the were done last off the top of your head or if it was more than 20k miles ago, yes they have a lot of life left, but, your about to chuck more power through your engine, don't risk it. When getting your belt done, get your water pump changed, it should be done every other belt change but people forget and it's so so important. Use premium oil (research on forums and owner clubs the best brand recommended for your exact engine), use fuel additives to clean your engine (or get an engine clean professionally), if you're using a diesel then get the EGR Valve cleared of the inevitable thick layer of soot and oil, check your turbo bearings (if you have one), check your coolant with check strips and if you're going for a lot more power then I'd recommend getting a head gasket change. This will basically triple the price of your tune, but, you aren't getting a car tuned to last maybe a year right? So best to take the time and money to a long life from your vehicle than chose the cheaper ways and regret the decision, there are many things you can scrimp on when modifying your vehicle's but things like big power gain mods are expensive because they have the power to kill your car quickly if not done correctly and by a proper professional or experienced person. Be kind to your car, it doesn't matter if people call it names, it's your baby, pamper it with expensive gifts! Peace

I have a racechip on my 1.2 tsi polo, it was $350aud, the cheapest proper dyno tune that I could find in my area was $1000aud. I ran it at the local drag strip completely stock and it ran a 16.9, it was a reasonably cold night, roughly 15 degrees. I fitted the racechip and a cheap cat back exhaust/ hot air intake and ran a 15.9 at the same drag strip on a considerably hotter night, approximately 30 degrees. So these do work. I’ve had it fitted for about 40000km so far and no issues, doesn’t overfuel and oil is still clean between oil changes.

The fuel only unit did improve the performance the other only improved performance below 120kph above that worse than standard. These units are adjustable but winding them right up produces more exhaust smoke. My understanding is most modern cars the ECU has torque limiting settings that are not over ridden by these type of tuning boxes. Are they worth the money ? They can improve the drivability but from what I've seen don't expect to see 35 plus H.P. Having said that I've not used this type and the quality looks good remember it gets hot under there and can get wet. Tuning Entry level at best.

The car is still going strong 8 years later (my brother in law bought it off me), and it kicks my B8 2.0 tdi a$$ considerably in terms of power and speed.
What was even more surprising is that my fuel economy on highway trips was unreal, highway runs became around 4.5 litres per 100 km.

I mean atleast we know racechip is more legit than most other tuning chips. But still it ain't as good as a tune (especially when the biggest spec racechip costs the same as an actual dyno tune I could get from a local tuning place) you gotta remember it only tricks the ecu into thinking there's not enough boost and not enough fuel. Also they have no way of controlling timing, they just let the ecu correct it with the knock sensors and other way of the ecu to self adjust. And I don't think I have to explain too much, but basically letting a computer choose how much timing to run all the time can end up pretty bad. (the timing correction stuff in the ecu is made for extreme cases like heat soak and stuff like that but with chips it pulls timing 100% of the time, and it's definitely not made to be used everytime.)

    Yes, "little bit" more power.
The real chip-tuning (new map for the ECU) is much better because then it works on ALL data. Tuning boxes are limited because they can only manipulate some of the data sent between the ECU and the injectors and (some) sensors there's only so much you can do with that.
There are only two advantages of the tuning boxes: flexibility and (usually) price.
I got my new program from the company that makes tuning boxes too. And, for example, the tunig box would give me increase only from 90KM and 210Nm to 105KM and 240Nm, and the full new program for the ECU gave me 120KM and 265Nm.

Its not, if you buy the gts you get a free retune if you change cars, so its a 2 for 1 deal, it also doesnt involve some random guy with a laptop permanently messing with the self preservation perameters of your engine and you can turn it off anytime you like, no extra cost.
Mines best thing ive bought in a long while, no paid promotion needed

def thinking about getting a racechip for a 2018 elantra sport, seems like the perfect middle ground of some performance gains without having to do real work on the car

Ordered the rs for my 2.0 turbo optima, I hear they’re pretty decent for Hyundai/Kia paired with hks plugs and basic bolt ons

0:32 "...to their HQ in Stuttgart!"
*pans out to show an Alpine with Göppingen (GP) numberplates, after an opening sequence filmed just outside Göppingen. Continues with every single driving shot showing cars with GP numberplates, and the Hohenstaufen in the background.*
    Stuttgart? Yeah, nah, mate.

No one knows or cares where Goeppingen is. Stuttgart is literally 30 kilometers away. If someone from Watford wants to say they're from London to literally anyone except people who live in the area, that's entirely valid.

Race Chip really works( i have instaled on my abarth) . but it's not so safe . manipulates the turbo pressure sensors, increasing the turbine pressure, changing Afr so the mixture will be poorer, increasing the chances of engine knoack. I only use it with 98, 100 octane fuel to reduce the chances of knoack

6:20 are there any valid comparing measurements of fuel consumption available !?
I’m still doubting the efficiency increase with a Box compared to stock as long as I don’t see any valid measurements

First "question" wasn't "does Race Chip use a dyno in their R&D process" but a "suggestion" that you should just tune your own ECU (especially if it's already past warranty) on a dyno, which takes into account your engine condition, all the modifications and allows for a bit more flexibility with whole setup.
All those boxes should be tuned after installation to fit the exact car perfectly.

One question why is the company of any car manufacturers does not make your car the best way..
Because it will be broken in 1 year
Car companies the adjust the ecu to the best way your engine will handle and more safe more efficiently and the best power you can get without damaging your engine hope race chips answer my question

Actually they also do it for tax purposes and model differentiation , for example you can find the Ford 2.0 Tdci engine in the Focus with a max of 150hp and in the Mondeo with 180hp. Same engine but with different tuning ...

@@cosminpopescu92 It's more complex than that and you need to do research for each car. Many parts of the engine are often changed to make it more reliable to take the extra power. Plus the drivetrain and gearbox. How long did Project mx-5 last? And that engine was uprated to try to handle it, but just too much extra power. Only the car makers know what they are doing, not a couple of guys with ponytails.

Assuming this is essentially like a jb4 for my 335i. It has the potential to work very well by tricking the ecu that the perameters are the stock configuration. While instead reading and adjusting fuel, timing, boost ect...
Some cars obviously would benefit greater then others.
This also is pure assumption that these chips actually work and are similar to the jb4 units familiar in german tuning

I know that stretch of road you kept filming on. It’s known as the Asruecken and the big hill in the back is Hohenstaufen, one of the forner castle locations of König Barbarossa. Spent summers in Eislingen, growning up. =p
