@dbot956 You may want to also check the hubs too, to see if they're functioning properly and that the locking mechanism isn't worn out. Hope this helps you out.
@dbot956 It could be the shift motor, or you may also want to check your vacuum lines to see if you have a vacuum leak in the engine compartment that may be causing it not to shift correctly. Hope this helps you out.
You may want to check the EGR valve to see if it's working correctly. Also if there's a check engine light on, pull the code to see what's causing it to go off.
@82raptor It could be a loose connection, or you may want to look under the hood for a loose or a broken vacuum line, to see it that's what's causing the problem. Hope this helps you out.
You may want to check the fluid level in the transfer case just to make sure that the fluid is up to level. You truck does have a transfer case control unit, which could act up. If there's any kind of a warning light on on the dash, you may want to pull the code to see what it points to.
You may want to check the wires around the shift motor to see if they are connected the right way. You could also try to pull the codes from the computer to see what the issue may be.
I followed these exact steps to fix my 01 Explorer Sport today. Exactly as shown, a really easy fix! No need to change the wiring on mine, and the top bolt was a little tricky because of its location. Thanks for the video!
@Guardien2814 It sounds as though the 4WD may not be engaging all of the way. You may want to check the vacuum lines under the hood to see if any of them have come unplugged or are frayed.
The issue could definitely be related to the transfer case locking up. There are different gear ratios inside the transfer case when you select the 4hi and 4lo. You might want to bring it to someone to have the fully diagnose the issue.
If you are getting a whining noise it could be one of the bearings wasn't installed correctly in the new transfercase. Your best bet would be to drop the transfercase again and bring it back to where you got it from and have them go over it again.
I replaced my transfer motor cause it was stuck in 4 low now it flips real good in all gears thanks sir ur video worked good for me and now if needed I can 4 wheel
@congabill First check your owners manual and make sure you are performing the correct procedure to get it out of 4 low. You need to have the vehicle stopped and in neutral with your foot on the the brake. If that still doesn't work then that is usually the sign of a bad motor. Over time they lose power.
@Nuria1229 if it doesn't light up, test the power to the switch with a test light. If there is power to the switch, but no power coming from it, it could be the switch that is bad.
Thanks. I used this procedure on m y 1997 F150. Thanks for all the tips and demonstration of every detail, especially on how to disconnect the connectors. That is normally my bane.
Thanks so much. It sure made it easier than guessing. I took 4 or 5 photos of the wires just to be safe in case I got the sequence wrong and drew a diagram. The tight fit made it a real pain. I cut the wires going to the old motor and got it out of the way. I did have to use a 1 1/2" extension for the bolts and a special squeeze ratchet to get the top bolt.
@MrFredrick57 Not sure if your getting a check engine light or not but. I would check to see if there are any codes in the computer that might point to what the issue is.
@Nuria1229 You could take the switch out and test the wires going to and from it with a test light to see if it's working. not sure on the year of your Ford Explorer. If you visit our website 1aauto.com they should be listed on our website for you. Hope this helps you out.
If nothing is happening, then their is a good chance that the system is not working. I suggest you bring it to someone to have them diagnose the issue and go from there.
@morganlynnlovee You may want to check to see if it's that making the noise and not your fuel pump. A fuel pump that's getting tired will typically make a buzzing noise.
My 4x4 was not engaging. Vacuum good, switch seemed okay too but no dash light and no 4x4. I read on a forum to tap lightly on the shift motor since they sometimes bind up and since my truck is in storage for half the year, this made sense. Sure enough 5 taps later I flip the switch and am good to go - what a quick and easy fix (and with my favourite tool!)
You may want to test the power going to and from the switch with a test light to see if there's power going to and from the switch. This should be done after you have checked the fuse first. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
@1aauto is there away i can bisect the wire from the switch for it just to go on 4wd for this winter? and how much is a switch and if its not the switch what else can it be wrong the 4wd motor and anything else? thank you for ur response
just wanted to say thanks for all the videos you do they are very helpful!! i have a 02 mountaineer the awd is stuck on and making the back and front of the veh. wheel hope on hard turns Know its something to do with the awd transfer case do you think its possible that the shift motor could be the problem??Thanks and keep up the good work
It should yes I would agree. My truck is a 98 Ranger, but looks pretty much the same. I did have the vechile on the ground which perhaps was somehow making the shaft of the motor "stick".
Do all the wire colors match upwith each other on both sides of the plugs? Someone has previously attempted this on mine and I want to make sure the wiring is correct. It looks like they broke a couple of pins and then wired them direct.
It may be that the steering tube shifting assembly has worn out. We carry the replacement shift tubes with new bearings on our website. Here's a link to them. 1aauto.com/1A/ChassisSuspension/Ford/Explorer/1ASTC00095/374748/1995?ATony
Thanks so much! I replaced the shift motor on my '97 Ranger. The wiring was less complicated (the plug had fewer wires & I only had to move one over), but without the instruction regarding the red clip I would have been scratching my head for sure. For anyone else dealing with this shift motor failing, check out www.therangerstation.com, they have a great article about it.
What are the symptoms when the shift motor goes bad? I have a 2004 ford explorer limited and it kind of bind., chirp when making u turns.I have fixed a few watching your videos thanks!!
Thanks. My dad has an 97 explorer and his is a two door. It doesn't have this damper and he was wondering why it doesn't; just out of curiosity though. I was thinking because of the shorter drive shaft.
How do you know you need to replace the motor and not the switch? Today my explorer went into 4wd low and will not come out, even though the lights on the switch will go to 4wd high and 2wd. Sounds like a slight click, but no change. Thanks for the video.
It could be the shift motor or one of the solenoids that helps to engage the shift motor. There should be two solenoids. Also check the vacuum line for cracks, a vacuum line leak could also cause the 4WD system to not engage. We carry the solenoids and the transfer case shift motors on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
i had to do the same thing on my 01 ranger (basically the same) in my case the 4wd would test good in the bulb test on start up and then the next day not. the problem was the switches inside the aluminum housing (like a wiper motor) went bad. works great now... let me know if thats a "normal failure" guys.... THANKS!
Anyone know why I might be stuck in 4low now after replacing it? I couldn't get 4high or 4low to engage before. Great Video by the way, these 1A videos still save my butt 10 years later on my 96 explorer.
@1aauto I can't find this answer anywhere else, so i was hoping you could tell me. Do you know why Whne i shift my rangers transfer Case to Neutral it puts the whole truck in neutral?. I mean, what would be the point of that?.
I would really appreciate your advice. my 2001 explorer starts and runs fine. when i rev it, it takes a while to go all the way to 4000 rpm. when its put in drive and i press the gas it stalls out. the only way itll move is if i keep the rpms at about 1300. please help
That knocking noise is extremely bad for the engine. That means something inside is misfiring. You need to have that looked at immediately or you could risk destroying the entire engine.

It's almost like it's bolted on under the plastic cover. Not any room to shove in a large flat blade screw driver under the housing mount to pry off.
@civicluva2001 It sounds like something may be binding up in the drive train. When you say that it won't roll backwards will the transmission go into reverse and try to roll ?
i have a 2002 ford explorer spor trac,I noticed the 4x4 Low light and the OD light don't work. I doubt these are related, but it's odd that they both quit working at simillar times. Most likely it is a vacuum leak. Check the rubber hoses around then intake manifold area for rubber parts that are splitting or deteriorate in your hand. A smoke test would work best to confirm vacuum leaks but are expensive to purchase.

Quick question. My 2002 ford explorer has 4x4 but its not working. all fuses are okay. the 4x4 lights in the cluster do not come on at all and when i push either of the 3 4x4 buttons nothing happens. any help please?
My '03 Explorer Sport will shift to 4x4 easy enough but when I want to go back to 4x2 I have to turn the selector to 4x2, stop the truck, back up just a little bit and then it goes into 2WD. Shift motor gone bad or can it be adjusted?
IIt feels like it goes into reverse. Bogs down when I press the gas. When I put it on Jackson and in neutral the rear wheel will roll forward but not back...?

Again ,i never drove fords before and i just acquired a Mazda B 3000 /Ranger and this is all gold to me ,ill do my best to spread the word about you!
For heck of it (if you haven't already) try to back the stuck up in reverse after shifting to see if it will disengage for you.

@halflife103 Most 4WDs are set up this way, one reason it to unlock the drivetrain so that the vehicle can be towed if it needs to be.
They should. This video should help you out in fixing the issue.
You may want to check the fluid level in the transfer case just to make sure that the fluid is up to level. You truck does have a transfer case control unit, which could act up. If there's any kind of a warning light on on the dash, you may want to pull the code to see what it points to.

@Guardien2814 It sounds as though the 4WD may not be engaging all of the way. You may want to check the vacuum lines under the hood to see if any of them have come unplugged or are frayed.
Very useful video, it took me less than 15 minutes to change it, following your instructions
Thank you!
you could test the power to the transfer case shift motor with a test light.
The light should indicate if you are. You may also feel the front pull or grab while taking turns.
If there's a check engine light on or any kind of warning light on, if you have the code pulled it should help to point you in the right direction.
The issue could definitely be related to the transfer case locking up. There are different gear ratios inside the transfer case when you select the 4hi and 4lo. You might want to bring it to someone to have the fully diagnose the issue.

@AndyMac313 It's a damper to help reduce vibrations in the transfer case.
I replaced my transfer motor cause it was stuck in 4 low now it flips real good in all gears thanks sir ur video worked good for me and now if needed I can 4 wheel

@iAaronHD It could be. Also test the wire going to it to make sure that there's power to the switch.
You may want to have a qualified transmission shop test the valve body on the transmission to see if there's any thing that may need to be replaced.
It could be, you may want to take a look at it.
thanks you so much it worked on my ford... you saved me lots of money doing it myself
@jator68 I would recommend having a mechanic take a look at it for you.
You should have the check engine light scanneg, because it should point you in a direction as to why the 4WD may not be working correctly.
You may want to check the fluid level of the transmission fluid to see if it's at the proper level.
@JBlinky67 It would be stuff like your 4WD isn't engaging or may not work. You should be able to hear the shift motor move when it's engaging.
You may want to check the switch to see if it has power to it.
It could be the switch or the actuator that's not working correctly.
If there's a relay somewhere in the circuit, see if there's power to the relay.
Thanks so much. It sure made it easier than guessing. I took 4 or 5 photos of the wires just to be safe in case I got the sequence wrong and drew a diagram. The tight fit made it a real pain. Clear concise and well shot.
Normally you can rotate it with a pair of pliers to the correct position.
@Nuria1229 You may want to test the switch to see if it's working right.
If there's a check engine light on, you may want to have the code pulled.
Great video, I have to replace this exact part when it stops snowing, just crazy Ford didn't spend the extra $1 to add a connector for the motor.

@1aauto how would i be albe to test it? and how would it go bad if the 4wd on my truck never was used?
good show: you are showing how to tab out wires! though what if the t case triangle nipple is not in the same place as the motors receiver?
It could be the shift motor or one of the solenoids that helps to engage the shift motor. There should be two solenoids. What do the 3 wires that run with the brown wire go to
2004 Explorer Sport Trac. I do not have 4L at all (no click when you turn the switch, no light & no engagement). When I switch to 4H, it engages but about every 10 seconds or so there is a loud awful thud and the truck jerks. When this happens, the 4WD disengages for a second as well (I think this because the drag or hum stops). About a month or so ago, I used 4H and it took about 20 seconds to disengage (with an awful thud) after switching back to 2WD. Any suggestions?
What does this job normally cost to have done?
I removed the 4 bolts, the motor assembly rotates freely as in I can push the motor assembly upwards towards the sky. I can fell tension, but the shift motor won't not come loose to pull off.
