  • If you're struggling to hit the ball high, far, and straight - check your grip. Most golfers are taught to take a strong grip. That's where your lead hand is over-rotated on the club. The idea is that you won't slice when you do this. The problem you may be unaware of is how much the strong grip is hurting your golf swing. An overly strong grip can make it difficult to be a great ball striker because it forces the clubface to close too much - resulting in low, pulled shots. I know that making a grip change is uncomfortable, that's why you have a couple of options to workaround strong grip problems. In this video I discuss the issues with a strong grip, how I helped a student overcome his ball striking problems, and how you can make the strong grip work for you.

    Thanks Tom. This was exactly me. 4 knuckle strong grip. Some days it worked, when I could line up the 6 different swing thoughts in my head. Otherwise - hook city. I got so frustrated I ditched it and went back to a 2 knuckle neutral grip, and for a few rounds I did push to the right. Now, it’s dialed in and all i think about is keeping the weight in my lead foot, head still, and swinging my shoulders. My long irons and driver (which I didn’t play all season) are back in game. Im much more consistent. A strong grip just requires too many compensations for me. Never going back.

    Excellent video Tom on the possible perils of a strong grip! As you have suggested, as a senior golfer, I have a neutral grip which produces the wanted flat left wrist. Since I have gone to a more vertical swing, this grip works nicely in producing a strong and consistent ball flight! Well Done Tom! I'm always learning or getting validation from your videos! Yes - if you had grown accustomed to your strong grip then this change to a more neutral attachment can feel awkward at first and may also produce some odd shots. But this is normal when trying to incorporate the necessary changes in the spirit of lasting improvement. As the crispiness builds in the weirdness will surely dissipate. Embrace the process and you WILL feel crispier impact and see your ball flight improve!

    Great video. I used to play with a strong grip (3 knuckles) but was hitting the ball too much from the inside and also without proper divots. About 2 years ago started to play with 1-2 knuckle left hand grip and now I can properly release the club. Better path (about 2-4 degrees inside) and proper divots with short irons. Also clubhead speed is clearly better. Now if I am hitting pushes, I focus on a flat left wrist at the top and it works really well. On good days that is not needed as timing is automatically better.
    I do understand that for some people trying to "not slice" a stronger grip is needed to square the club at impact but for me it does not work. Also I rather hit a push slice than a duck hook if you can choose from those bad shots 😂.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому +1

      Excellent job, Peter, and I appreciate your validating this lesson with your experience!
      You are exactly correct in that a strong grip - when deployed as an anti-slice band-aid - is precisely that: a patch designed to compensate for a deficiency or flaw somewhere upstream in the swing motion. In the system I teach a neutral grip is the preferred attachment for our stock powerful push-draw ball flight, and as such it is supportive of a proper in-to-out downswing path.
      Thanks again for your message and keep up the great work!

    Nice one Tom. Thank you. It is a bit of a controversial topic. However, what works for some doesn’t work for others. This is where feel enters to help achieve your desired results of lowering one’s handicap. As Tiger has repeatedly said “you can’t teach feel”. My own grip is on the stronger side and I keep my hand slightly cupped at the top of my backswing. Just doesn’t work for most.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому

      The point here is that we should endeavor to remain keenly aware of where that clubface is throughout the swing motion. It's always best to not have to rely on any precise handsy manipulations or other compensatory maneuvers, and that is why if we are committed to playing with a strong grip - which is fine - we would do well to retain that cupped condition that was pre-established at address. Beyond that, just be cognizant of the ball flight and impact tendencies that can creep in if not diligently managed. With that in mind, enjoy your strong grip and let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide!

Was wondering if you could recommend a particular swing that would lessen the impact on my elbow for when i return? couldn't agree more. it is said that a cupped wrist is a weak position. but, it is only weak if a player actively hinges the wrist up. when the wrist is cupped at the top it enables the left hand to press against the left side of the shaft, when the hand is to the left side of the shaft, in the downswing. and, this, of course, releases the club thru. a cupped wrist enables a player to create lag; and, for me, it is so important for the left side of the head to press down in the start of the downswing to make space to create lag. when i first noticed this in hogan's swing i had a great sense of trepedation about trying it out. and, when i did i hit the ball dreadful; and, resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't for me. but, the next time i practiced i found that couldn't do anything else but press down with the left side of my head and make space to create lag; and, i started to hit the ball well. i just needed to develop the ability to push back with my wrist joint whilst i pressed down with the left side of my head. the two have to work as antagonistic opposites and increase coil in the start of the downswing.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому +1

      There were certainly some enigmatic properties of Mr. Hogan's swing. For example, he combined that cupped wrist with his trademark weak grip and obviously made it work......to the level of "Legendary". Once he implemented that there was no way he was ever going back to his old hooking ways. And yes, the resulting degree of lag he was able to achieve enabled him to squeeze insane distance out of his relatively tiny frame.
      Thanks for sharing!

    Yes. I also play with a weak/neutral grip. It allows me to work the ball either direction. However, I do recommend that players experiment with both extremes. Take a really strong grip, and work out how to hit a cut. Then, take a really weak grip, and work out how to hit a draw. This teaches you how to use your hands, and body to change path, and face. After spending the time learning to hit opposite shots using both extreme grips, you’ll easily figure out which variance of “neutral” works best for you. Too many people out there that ONLY work on trying to hit a straight ball. And… they end up with a two-way miss. Learning how to hit the ball low, or high, hook, or slice, draw, or fade will self-teach you sooooo much about the golf swing. You can’t play good golf with a two-way miss. Golf is about “predicting” your ball flight.

    AskGolfNut channel actually made me realise my "strong arm" compensation was really just making up for my natural pronation of my arm which back at the bottom of the swing "relaxes" back to square with zero effort when Im strong. So for me, I dont have wrist issues, I just let it flow and it "un-cups" compared to super cupped at the top, but still holds at impact.
    So your Fred Couples example is literally me 🤯 now I realise my adjustment isnt a band-aid I thought I needed to remove, its actually my body telling me what it needed. This and the AskGolfNut video on grip really gave me so much perspective, im actually ok and not band-aiding anything (I actually still fade the ball lol, maybe Im not strong enough? 😂).

    I recently had an MOT lesson as I knew things were not right with lots of pulls and left misses. First thing coach did was weaken my grip. All of a sudden ball can’t go left and went right. It has forced my body to provide rotation in the right way to square the clubface. Also lead to an immediate loss of 10 yards but accuracy and dispersion which again is starting to come back but with much more control.

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson video resonated with you, Sean, and I appreciate your validating remarks!
      Yes - that weaker grip is going to "train" your body into the proper motion. It can feel strange initially and produce some seemingly anemic shots, but that is a necessary and temporary consequence. There is a reason - backed by physics and geometry - as to why a neutral grip is the preferred attachment for our stock powerful push-draw ball flight in the system I teach. I went through the grip change "growing pains" as well, but the end result was much better control/consistency, and yes - more distance as well!

    Tom, speaking of grip I have a question and observation. When discussing and demonstrating the right inner elbow tucked into the right side and turned toward the ball-I find it difficult to do with the grip of my right hand slightly over my left thumb. As the fold in my right thumb covers my left thumb this makes it extremely difficult to have my right inner elbow facing the ball. My question is, should I forget about the right thumb crease covering the left thumb and instead have my right hand slightly under my left hand in my grip allowing my right elbow to be better tucked in my right side with the inner elbow in the correct position facing the ball. I hope you understand what I’m trying to convey. Thank you and have a Merry Xmas and a Healthy New Year!🎄🎅🏻

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому +1

      Are you tucking first and then gripping? That's how I go about it. I externally rotate the upper trail arm to get the elbow into my ribcage, and then I rotate the forearm towards the target so the hand covers the thumb of the lead hand.
      Thanks, and I wish you and yours a Blessed Christmas and a wonderful holiday season!

    So, a couple of weeks ago you showed me a device (training aid) that keeps your wrist cupped throughout the swing, now I just need to work on how strong my grip is at setup and keep the same grip throughout the swing until impact right ?

      The Precision Impact device that I demonstrated maintains the "wedge" formed by the back of the trail hand and the forearm at setup. That is the wrist condition we are seeking to retain as it will produce crispy impact by eliminating any flipping or scooping through the zone.

    This is like a revelation for me! I have a strong grip but figure my left wrist has to be flat at the top which closes my club face. When I miss left, my buddy is always pointing out how shut my club face is at the top. I try compensating by lining up way right or still having a strong grip but taking my grip with the club face open a bit. But inevitably none of that produces consistency.

      We should endeavor to remain keenly aware of where that clubface is pointing throughout the swing motion. It's always best to not have to rely on any precise handsy manipulations or other compensatory maneuvers, and that is why if we are committed to playing with a strong grip we really ought to try to retain that cupped condition that was pre-established at address.

Every once in a while, the hooks will start coming as long as I pay attention to my path I’m fine. It gives me more power too.

    Is there a such thing as a wrong way to grip?
    More specifically the trail hand. I’m just naturally comfortable with my trail hand to be wide open where it’s more under the club than over when holding the club. I’ve been told this is wrong and when I tried to change it (more of a neutral grip in general), I was all over the place…never once got used to it.
    But just recently I went back to my old trail hand grip open and have noticed a big significant consistency in aim and distance. So again, is there a such thing as a wrong way to grip?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому +1

      My main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure in the fingers throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. Beyond that, each golfer is free to add their own individual flair and determine what works best for them.
      Having said that, we should endeavor to remain keenly aware of where that clubface is pointing throughout the swing motion. It's always best to not have to rely on any precise handsy manipulations or other compensatory maneuvers. Beyond that, just be cognizant of the ball flight and impact tendencies that can creep in if your trail hand leaks too much under the club so you can nip it in the bud without diving into any major swing interventions. With that in mind, enjoy your grip and let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide!

      @@golfclubcoach I started golfing at age 4 with a strong grip and hinged at the top. It’s all I’ve ever known. Experimenting with a weaker grip and flat wrist at the top feels ungodly alien. I think it would take an entire season of hitting A LOT of range balls to even begin to make it work advantageously. I have never had a problem working a fade or a draw on command (when I’m hitting well). With that said, if I had to do it over due to Saguto’s many excellent vids on the subject, and others, I would definitely choose a weak grip and a flat wrist at the top. It takes so many variables out of the swing.
      Then to further scramble the eggs take Ben Hogan’s unique grip/swing - who in my opinion is the best ball striker in history. Ben had a weak grip and associated bowed left wrist at impact but had a quite strongly hinged left wrist at the top of the backswing. These conundrums turn my thoughts into spaghetti. Another reason why I’d choose a weak grip and flat wrist at the top in the next life - I wouldn’t have to think about all the crazy intricacies of my swing. As a competitive junior I played 5 days a week and probably averaged hitting several hundred range balls a day. Now as a middle aged guy and not playing much - maybe 2 to 3 times a month - my ball striking consistently leaves a lot to be desired.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому

      @rogerperkins - I take no issue with that! The point here is that there are certainly compensatory actions required in order to accommodate a strong grip and achieve desirable results. So many teachers push strong grips. It certainly can work if you match it up with the rest of your patterns. Plenty of pros make it work phenomenally well. My grip naturally wants to be strong and I fight the low hook syndrome. I constantly work on getting it more neutral but when I play on the course, it tends to move stronger. I find it’s the trail hand that needs to be more neutral. The lead hand can be stronger but if the trail hand is neutral, I don’t hook it. Teachers are finally coming around to the fact that the hands don’t need to be exactly opposed either.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому

      A strong grip - when deployed as an anti-slice band-aid - is precisely that: a patch designed to compensate for a deficiency or flaw somewhere upstream in the swing motion that the teacher or golfer can't or won't fix. If, on the other hand - so to speak 😎 - the strong grip is simply a matter of preference, then we should endeavor to remain keenly aware of where that clubface is pointing throughout the swing motion. It's always best to not have to rely on any precise handsy manipulations or other compensatory maneuvers, and our ball flight is quite adept at telling us if our grip is starting to leak one way or another.

    The stronger my grip the harder it is for me to draw or hook the ball....and I temd to block it.
    The weaker my grip, the easier it is for me to draw or hook the ball.
    Why do you think that is?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  5 місяців тому +1

      Actually, Brad, in the system I teach a neutral grip is the preferred attachment for our stock powerful push-draw ball flight, and as such it is supportive of a proper in-to-out downswing path.
      As for your blocking issues with the strong grip, there are a few potential causes and it would be darn near impossible to accurately diagnose without actually seeing your swing. It's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So in your case where you are able to draw the ball with a more neutral grip - and by "draw" I assume you are referring to a push-draw - a strong grip block may be the result of the clubface being open to the target line and square to an overly in-to-out path. That's just a wild guess. Video will be the best way for you to see what is actually happening.
      By the way, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to diagnosing and resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. • @SagutoGolf

      Hi Luke,
      This is far more than a "method"; it is a robust system. Included in this system - for those who elect to learn it properly such as through the online school - is the ability to read our ball flight, understand the impact condition that resulted in an undesirable shot, reverse engineer our swing to diagnose the cause, and implement the appropriate corrective action - whether it be at the range or mid-round on the course.
      One can certainly haphazardly try to piece things together through these free channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic - thereby not receiving the complete structured package - and then blame the "method" when something goes awry - or they can choose to truly embrace the system and the process for just $14.99/month or $149.99/year. Yes - for less than what many are charging for a one-hour lesson nowadays you get an entire year of that which has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives.
      With regard to your pulls, the ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So, in the case of a pull, the face is closed to the target line at impact. There are various possible causes for this, including the face being too shut at address, a grip that is too strong, a ball position that is too far forward, a downswing path that is approaching the ball from the outside, flipping/rolling the hands through the zone and more. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first three possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. For example, a golfer may have previously deployed a closed clubface at address and/or a strong grip to compensate for a slice due to a steep downswing path. If the path has been corrected, then that same grip can certainly result in pulled shots.
      Stop fishing for company to commiserate over your occasional ball striking woes! You said you shoot well with this "method". There's the proof that it works. Now, how about committing to the "system" - a system that will carry you happily through the entirety of your golfing life?
