Many authoritarian states like to invest a ton of money into their subways in the biggest cities, they like to pretend their life is luxurious 😂. Just visit Uzbekistan for example. Meanwhile, people are surviving on $100 a month.

@@fye_4155 I live here, and I’m gonna be honest, all these tourists only go to the most populated areas. There are so many nicer areas like Sunnyside, Forest Hills, Park Slope, ETC. It’s rare for most tourists to go to places that aren’t Midtown, Downtown, and Downtown Brooklyn. The subway is great in my area, and it’s elevated which makes it better. But I mean I won’t deny Times Square is a mess, but I don’t go there daily and most of us don’t.
Fulton Station is a relatively new structure designed to consolidate multiple lines. While the overall system is very old, there is very little investment in maintaining the system, or upgrading it. It is dirty, lacks modern technology updates such as signals, platform barriers, etc. Many of the people in the system are also of low quality. They jump fare stations, litter, vandalize, commit crimes, and are mentally unstable. Definitely not up to international standards.
Moynihan station is primarily for Amtrak trains. No HSR trains like Europe or Asia. Ancient.
The u.s has the money to upgrade or fixed the metro EASILY if they wanted to.....but they chose not to instead spending their taxed dollars on 800 military bases around the world simply as that.

Yesterday, when i left work for home, upon entering Bryant part B line station, a mentally unstable person was shouting right in the there.
These kind of things happen too often and I loath ppl saying "It' a normal day in NYC, get used to it like a local" .
Have they not seen a real civilized metro system / society? Even when we just look at the subway system, some people often use "old age" as an excuse, but London's tube is even older than NYC subway but has been maintained much better - I rarely see crazies while traveling in London. I think it's just BAD GOVERNANCE!
NYC metro is one of the worst I have experienced in my whole life! And trust me, I've used over 50 different metro systems around the world. In fact, the only one that I would rate even worse than NYC is Philadelphia, also in the USA... 🙈
I have been here over 60 years and the reason why most of the subway stations are dirty is because, When ever they budget cuts the first thing that goes in maintenance. And then they have to try to catch up with some of the work when they get a little extra money. But by the condition of most stations the never do.

I have been in New York for nearly 20 years.
I only take the subway when I go to Manhattan because it's hard to find parking in the city center.
In the US, you cannot get around without a car.
The subway is a dirty and dangerous place.
Every New Yorker knows not to go out or take the subway at night.
Many stations need to be remodeled or redecorated. but unfortunately, the USA would like to pay money to make weapons, but not the infrastructure, it is sad.
Well, I'm happy to see that Grand Central is being maintained. It is a beautiful place, too bad so many other stations are filthy and dark.
You should take the metro train at night in New York and see what will happen.

Chinese girl got pushed off and died on the subway tracks by a crazy man. This happened 9am in the morning at 42nd Street!!! There's no specific time the crazies come out

People only focus on the bad, never the good parts of the system. I've seen very clean stations on, for instance, 4th avenue in Brooklyn, which are only so well-maintained because these stations were shut down for months.
New York City is one of the only cities in the world that has a subway system which operates 24/7/365. With how many people use this system on a daily basis, it shouldn't be a surprise that not all of it is as well-kept as it could be, but I really do feel like most people only focus on the nasty parts of the city in order to push this stigma forward that all of NYC is like this.
I'm not even looking to argue with anybody in this comment section, cause I know damn well a lot of you are just gonna flame me for supporting my home. But please understand what I'm saying.

Even southeast Asian cities have cleaner metros than NYC and absolutely no comparison to the ones in China.

It's the one problem with travelling, you realise how bad things are, especially here in the UK.
The best way to see it is, if your city has dirty, unsafe or dated Subway trains and unkempt stations....then it simply means a city's authorities are not taking its citizens seriously.
Come on, this is in the western world, and it's 2024. NYC authorities need a right kick up the backside, and a hard talking to.
It's not acceptable in any way, shape or form for a city as big and as important as NYC is, to have an unsafe Subway network with dirty trains and shabby looking stations. It's just not acceptable!

NYC has 482 subway stations, more than half of them are disgusting. Try traveling in the Bronx past 10pm and I guarantee you will be robbed or probably worse
Plenty of people leave Yankee Stadium (Bronx) past 10 pm and take the subway safely. But yes it could be safer overall.

Im a Russian from st Petersburg, that lives in NYC for 30 years and i dont give a damn. Every time i get wasted in the east village and take the subway back home.. I feel like im the man.. and i dont give a damn what it looks like.. the worse the better

I took the subway in Grand Central station for over 30 years. They were old and Not so grand at all. Now it seems to me they look little bit better but the army there for some reasons.

As you are from Toronto and clearly you spend most of your time there but before hoing to New York for 5 days at the end of September, i spent 9 days in Toronto prior to flying out there and have to say that from the perspective of someone both cities for the first time, Toronto won hands down.
Enjoyed NYC but loved Toronto. Dont think you cam really compare but the vibe in Toronto was just perfect.

Bulgaria is the poorest country in EU and still have much better looking subway system. The common people in the capital getting around 600$ per month. Don't ask about the provinces. There's no privet business there. Its so bad. People getting wages from municipalities and various mayors and political groups getting illegal advantages of that.
Single ticket cost less than dollar. For 30$ you get one month access to the entire transport of the capital.
NY Subway have 472 stations. Sofia (Bulgaria) have 47. That's five times more stations per capita and Bulgaria still managing it without much of debt. 30 times less debt per capita than USA - 23 billion vs. 32 trillion.

Looks like Stone Age lol , compared to any and I mean any subway station in China , can’t even compare - just go see , many vlogs. And 54 cities have subways and over 310 metro lines stations with I dunno how many stations prolly over 2000 , yes you heard me right. Don’t even start with high speed rail - 45,000km ( beats the entire world combined ) and another 295 stations. Try doing even 10% of that will take US a century and over 1T. Sigh so backward.

Here's an interesting fact that should be mind boggling. China used 3 times more cement in 3 years from 2018 to 2021, than what United States used in the entire 20th century. And China used 3 times more steel in the last 20 years, than what the US used in the 20th century.
