    9 out of 10, well done nitecore, only thing you don't get is some spare change and a lockout. This is a great lamp for camping and hiking, loads of capacity thanks to the free nitecore battery and its rock solid build. Highly recommended if you don't dislike the high price.

    Can the headband mount work on Molle webbing? Would like to mount it to the shoulder straps of my backpack.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  4 роки тому +3

      Hi that's a great question and ive just sat and tried here and it is possible. The plastic back plate has a slit cut in both sides so you can attach it, the only thing is it depends how wide your molle is, i needed to attach it over 3 sections. so the left was in a section then the middle you miss one out then the right goes into another section. i have backpacks that only have molle that is 2 sections wide so it would not work on that. so it depends on the width of your molle band. You have an excellent idea here i might try it on my larger packs.

      @@TrailTrek I have a TAD (Triple Aught Design) Light Speed Scout backpack as my EDC. I also have a vision disability so I carry a lot of flashlights or markers to help me see at night or be seen. On a whim I decided to purchase one of these after watcing your review but before I read your reply and took a chance that it would work for me and it does.
      The webbing on the shoulder straps are doubled so there is a wide (1.5") strap on top of the padding and a thinner (1") strap on top of that. Neither are sectioned off so I didn't have to worry about how many sections the mount would have to span and clear. I was able to mount the plate on the 1" strap and position the sternum strap under the arc of the plate and mount that 1" webbing to the overhead slot of the plate so now I also have the benefit of it securing the sternum strap in the position I like and not have it slide up and down all the time on one side. I'm assuming/hoping that will help the sternum strap on the other side for comfort.
      With the NiteCore attached to my EDC I can get into a more handsfree position and not have to wear something on my head all the time or whenever I need to. The light is always there at shoulder height and easy to get to to turn it on. I just needed to rotate the barrel towards my center more so it was focused in front of me more. The plate is made of plastic but it seems sturdy enough. I was hoping it was metal because being on my backpack I'll be swinging and slinging this thing around and I don't want it to break. I'm not sure what NiteCore's policy is on having to replace the mount.
      I'm glad I watched this now and I think I'll be happy with it. If I remember I'll drop in and setup an opinion after some time. Too bad there isn't a way that I can see to include a picture to this reply...
      P.S. I'm more of a SureFire fan but they don't have a setup like this that will help me and the headlamp that comes close is really expensive though I might buy one anyway as a proper headlamp if I need one.

      @@akmartinez1 Extremely interesting, I have a thorfire on my left shoulder strap and it works ok for walking at night but I think what you have done is smaller and more effective. My thorfire can only either illuminate my feet or the path ahead. I should either change it to a TIR light or do what you did with the HC65. I will be interested in what it is like over time. I've pinned your comment as this is a really good idea and I'm actually surprised a company has not cornered this market. Not everyone wants a light on their head.

    This is the best headlamp reviewing I've ever seen. I never know what make the spill and spot light until this clip. Also the way you show the ability of the headlamp by walking into the field is very nice. it makes me visual the ability of the headlamp. This overall make me easily decide which one to replace my old broken coleman headlamp. I am also looking the Jetbeam and the Fenix and look like this Nitecore HC65 suit my intend use for camping.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому +1

      This light is perfect for camping, I use the aux light for cooking and sitting about eating and chatting. Then in my head I can calculate how long it will run I just remember the aux will give about 25 hours of use. If I need to look further to go for a pee or see out further I use the main beam. Red light is great for filming as well. I truly love this headlamp and I'm not paid to say that. Than you so much for the kind comment as well, if I can help in any other way just ask. 😀😀😀

    Excellent and detailed review, very well done!
    One thing I would add: Nitecore uses constant current circuit instead of pulse width modulation (PWM). This might not seem like a big deal but it is a personal pet peeve of mine as many popular brands started using it and it drives me crazy. The worst offender so far has been my Black Diamond Storm because the PWM was giving off a wine, like imagine a mosquito constantly buzzing into your ears. Ever since whenever I buy a new headlamp it's the first thing I want to check but there is surprisingly little info on that, many shops don't even know what I am talking about.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  4 роки тому +2

      Good point, also see my review of the P PWM on the Rovyvon A8. It's extremely noticeable to the eye like a very fast strobe!

    Best headlamp review I've ever seen. You just got new subscriber. Your attention to detail is perfect. This light fits all of my criteria except that it only has one battery. I prefer a pack on the back with multiples. Love 18650's great batteries. I have just ordered this headlamp. Thank you.

      Thank you very much for the kind comment. This is the only light I now use for fishing at night it really is that good. I know it only has one battery but the aux light mode lasts about 25 hours. once used that camping and I never charged it once used it for hours. The usb charge also means you can charge in the car or from a Powerbank. I find it so hard to find any negatives with this light. What brands of lights with separate battery pack do you rate?

    • @nathanenglander6496
      @nathanenglander6496 5 років тому +1

      Mine were much older and 1.5v batteries in series. But more 3.7's in parallel only makes sense to me for runtime. I'm still very much looking forward to this headlight arriving :)

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому +1

      I think you will be very impressed. Even the red light function works well. Comparing it to some of my crappy ones I have off eBay for fishing it's like s Lamborghini. I use aux light for baiting up and walking on rocks etc and the full beam to look out further for stuff. And red light for sitting about. I also use it for any of my reviews of long distance flashlights. I can keep it on red light and it doesn't spoil my shots. Used it for the lumintop GT mini distance shots you can see my hands look red but didn't get in the way of showing light over the bay to a point. I hope you enjoy it mate. Let me know what you think when you have a shot.

    *Stopped partway through this review to say that-- when a hands-free light is actually needed--- they are extremely convenient for all manner of tasks! (How many times do we simply hold a small light in our mouths for quick-use needs? Plenty of times for me.) It really is about time here for a new "headlight," as I call these.*
    *This particular Nitecore light has been in one of my Amazon lists for a while now. Have held off getting it because I do have a headlight that is about 18-19 years old, made by Black Diamond. That one I still use regularly-- even though it has 4 small LEDs and one INCANDESCENT bulb. Unfortunately, it's powered by 4 AA cells. It is positively old tech compared to this Nitecore here. As you indicated, these are rather pricey. But it would last for a couple decades for most people's purposes.*
    *So, thanks for this review. I wonder if you were sent this HC65 for your review? Hoping that is the case, and that you are getting more from retailers and/or manufacturers for the purpose of reviewing. We had spoken of that once before, a while ago. OK, back to finish watching the last few minutes of this now...*

    • @TrailTrek

      Excellent comments, and you are so right about holding a flashlight, I know I've held one in my mouth many times, it's nice to have magnetic based ones so you can stick them on things, but it's sometimes 'Sods law' that there isn't anything metal to stick it on. I know a few people who swear by black diamond, they use them for fishing and also wild camping and they love them. I have 2 no brand cheap led headlights I used to use but exactly like you say the tech has come on a lot now. This unit was not a review sample I was able to get hold of it for a massive knock down. Using a combination of points and sale. In regards manufacturers, it's hard to even get them to reply to technical questions. Celestron still have not replied regards questions I sent them even though I got a receipt from them. And also jetbeam have still not replied to questions I had over Stepdown rates on the last jetbeam review. I think my emails must all get filled in the folder marked 'too difficult' and they forget about them! Lol 😊

    Correction, ultra-low is 1 lumen and not 11 lumens according to my manual. (Edited: You have 1 lumen in the chart at the end but say 11 lumens when you are demonstrating ultra-low earlier and talk about how you would prefer sub-lumen, 0.5 or even up to 1 lumen.) This is for those watching this video at a later date and not in any way a complaint about this well done video.
    Thank you for these excellent flashlight videos. It was this video and your comparison video that made our decision to go with this light for our ballistic helmets. So far, they have been very usable. I am thinking about trying a Wuben H1 for knocking about without a helmet and working on things since it is functionally the same for much less. If I were mounting on molle webbing for recreation, I would probably try the Wuben H1 first for lower cost.

I got it for military use, Iam gonna need to remove the third head strap so I can put it on my helmet, the red light was a big seller, it helps stay lowkey in the bush. Richy-Great review, as mentioned by Mr Bathe, I liked the comparison you did with the Nitecore and the Skillhunt. My Nightcore NU30 is much lighter with one strap since it's so light. Instead of a dedicated CRI lamp, mine has two CRI type LEDS. I have 2 red LEDs as well. The NU30 has 2 switches, one for the white lights, the other dedicated for red light modes only. The caveats with mine are, the USB port has the flappy cover on the outside of the light and no discover mode to find the light at night. It does have a lockout mode, I'd trade that for the discovery function. The NU30 hits 400 lumens on turbo but like the HC65 steps down. Nice to know I'm a celebrity now on UA-cam since you mentioned me twice in this video when it comes to my favorite "red lights!" LOL As always Richy, an informative and well done review!

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for the info mate, I think one of the top priorities with a headlight is weight and I'm guessing the nu30 is beautiful and light, but this one just totally won me over. Loads of features and you know I have a fixation with IP ratings. So I had to give it a 9. And yes I highly rate a lockout mode as well. Discovery mode is a added extra but not essential. Yes thanks to the massive help to the channel you are becoming a UA-cam celeb. I saw I guy today in the city with a maiden t-shirt on passing and instantly thought of you. It's currently thundering down with hailstones outside so I'm waiting for that to stop so I can go test another nitecore. I'm getting the pile of review lights down to a few now.

      Richy-You can't beat the capacity of the 18650 battery that's for sure. The Skillhunt might be in my future plans, I need to look up the cost of the HC65. Wow, red lights and Iron Maiden, what more could a man ask for? LOL As always, I look forward to your upcoming reviews......

      I like the skilhunt it has a sub mode for every mode, locator light, ipx8, magnetic base, clips into molle great and has a perfect heatsink. Even the headstrap is quite good. I do like the 18650 units, great runtime. The skil hunt has no red light mode though. But great performance and I've used it a lot. It does have battery rattle but you can fix that.

    Stuck between HC65 and Fenix HM65R. HM65R is $95 so I like the nitecore for price(on drop right now for $60) but I wish you could use both lights at once like the fenix to get that close and far lighting. Doesn't sound too important but I live that feature on my black diamond. Also, the black diamond LEDs are infinitely dimmable unlike Fenix and NC which have preset brightness levels. Life is hard.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому +1

      You know that's a good feature and I had never thought about it. Being able to have both lights running, I've not used a light that had that feature before. Well I took it out for a run today. It didn’t budge on my head. Very stable even though it’s quite heavy. The only negative thing for me was the surface area in contact with my forehead. It’s quite large and became pretty noticeable the more I ran.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому

      Yeah the bit that touches the head is large, but to be fair it's a large battery unit. But the up side is that you get some massive run times even at higher settings. Thanks for letting me know what you thought of it. I have been looking at some smaller running lights, armytek do a tiny one called the tiara which is 50% off right now and bullet proof. But the shipping is expensive. I don't think there would be a way to secure the hc65 light without it being a seat on the forehead, i guess you could maybe put something under the bottom bit like a head band but it's adding more stuff you don't want on your head. I only wear a hat in cold winter running conditions.
      Here is the link for the tiara, they specifically mention running in the description: www.armytek.com/products/flashlights/multi-flashlights/armytek-tiara-c1-pro/

Love them but they did break beyond repair after a year or so so reluctant to get another but if you haven’t checked them out, we’ll worth it. • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  4 роки тому +2

      The petzl lights are extremely light in comparison BUT this is completely waterproof no matter the rain level, also the capacity is massive. So with that gain in weight you also gain high capacity and ipx8. For multi day hikes I don't need to recharge even on higher levels which is a massive plus for me. But the weight may be an issue if you ultralight for example. I have used this for camping, hiking, night photography, filming and it's never let me down I love mine. You know i think 80 is fine, you still get 16 hours from that and it's not so bright you are wasting light. Also the aux cri light is just the right amount for cooking, walking etc. For running you need to use the 80 lumen plus. Because of the great runtimes you can easily get tasks done without worrying, and this unit has quite a wide beam as well so anther good point. It depends what it is your area up to. Does the light begin to dim on other modes? For example, when on medium mode, will the light begin to dim when it gets to a hot enough temperature.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому +2

      Excellent question. The Stepdown will only occur when using the highest setting. The reason for this is that on the highest setting the temperature gets very high. On lower modes there is no step down as those modes cannot create enough heat. They could theoretically do it but only if you were standing in death valley USA or a desert during the day when the ambient temp is extremely high. But high ambient temps are caused by sun and you never use lights in the sun. I hope that helps answer your question.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  5 років тому +2

      Here is my advice, if im out doing stars etc I use the red light function and it's so useful, then I use the aux light which has a spread out high cri light for walking and moving tripods etc. It doesn't ruin my night vision, and the runtime on that aux is like 25 hours which is amazing. Then I use the main beam to reach out to see landmarks and so forth.
      I highly recommend this light, I own about 40 lights and I would vouch for this light. The only thing I wish was that they added a type-C port but it's not a deal killer.
      I have only ever noticed one issue doing a really long 30 second per exposure video where I noticed the red light was picked up on a landmark nearby. But that's more my error and not an issue with this light. The red light is low enough for star shots. I hope that helps, if you have any other questions give me a shout.

      I would say if you only ever want to use as a headlamp then get the hc65 but if you want the ability to stand the flashlight up and take off the headband then get the HC30. Both are incredibly good units, i don't own or have tried the HC30 myself but specs wise its a good unit.

    Is the HC65 worth the $15 price increase over the HC60...why?

      Hi the difference is the HC65 adds a high CRI aux light and also red light. So that's the difference there, if you don't care about messing about with red light or using an aux light just get the HC60. I use the red light for night time work and photograph, and I use the aux light for camping. If you don't do that then you can get away with the HC60.
      Hope that helps. 👍😁

      TrailTrek how bright is the high cri light? Thanks for the great review.

      Hi thank you. The aux high CRI light is only 26 lumens but will last 25 hours. I use it for camping, so making food and things like that then I know in my head I have 25 hours of that without recharging. It is just enough to walk a path of the path is flat. If not you need to use the main beam for safety. I think the aux light is only for close up work, sitting in camp and things like that.

      Hi yes it's a northern England accent. Although I modify certain words and phrases as 90% of my viewers are from USA.
