we found this perfect recipe from Prue Leith from The Great British Bake off,
MALT LOAF
INGREDIENTS:
1 strong black tea bag
150ml just-boiled water
200g flame raisins
100g soft, pitted prunes, chopped
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
150g malt extract, plus extra for glazing
40g black treacle
100g dark muscovado sugar
250g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 eggs, lightly beaten
unsalted butter, to serve (optional)

It’s great to find these recipes that previously I took for granted as being something bought in a shop
My wife refers to this as Harvo.
I understand that it was a popular brand in the Midlands
I have just looked this up and she is quite correct. They were a seriously popular bakery in Birmingham
I have great memories of eating this slathered with real butter for Sunday tea, when I was a kid 😋

Love malt loaf but only homemade those soreen things are 🤮
I couldn’t believe how bad a soreen loaf was. Certainly seemed to be different from what I remember
