Man, I just wanted to tip the hat to ya...I think this a really solid review of this game. I like the compare/contrast to Stellaris. The only small suggestion I would make would be to maybe "tighten up" the review (aka - trim a little bit of the fat to shorten). I hope you don't take offense to this critique - I truly just mean it to be constructive. ;-)
But yeah, good stuff man; keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback. I do tend to go a little long. I'm going to work on a script for next time and try to be more efficient.

One thing I also don't like Stellaris is I can't build the space equivalent of Amphibious Assault ships (eg Wasp, Mistral, etc.)

Could you do a in depth view of all the spy options available?

Can do. I have a really bad head cold right now, which is why I have not posted in a few days. As soon as I am not coughing up a lung I'll put something together for you.

Get well soon! Just picked up the game on Sunday with some friends and would like a way to mess with them from afar.

good video, maybe try writing down talking points to go over so you don't get so distracted. also idk what your set up is like but It sounds like your whispering loudly most of the video. but thanks for the video really helped me with my decision on if I was going to buy this game.

Good video! A suggestion for you... You want a 4x that has the depth and colossal scale of Stelaris, BUT without the fun-draining paradox bullcrap of needing "permission" from the game to do anything? not to mention the need for 751 DLCS? I got words for you mate:
    *Distant worlds Universe*
Give it a try. I can almost guarantee you wont regret it.

@@diomed011 From what you've said you should also check out Space Empires 4 and/or Space Empires 5. Both are moderatley complex with a lot of player freedom to play how you want and mods etc.

Hi George. Would you do a let's play or tutorial playthrough? Also have you looked into the 5x mod? Some people swear by it. I also came back for this as a dad with limited time this one hits the sweet spot between simplicity and complexity. Also I stopped buying DLC for Stellaris after synthetic dawn and tried to go back to it after 3 years and its just a different game and I don't have the time to relearn everything.

I have two MOO Let's Play series. One is Klackon and one is Meklar. Not sure if that's what your looking for.
I feel your pain on the Stellaris front. I like Civ 6 but I just don't have the gas in the tank to relearn everything to claw my way back up to level 7 difficulty.

I think a lot of Paradox games are overrated, to be honest. You really have to supply your own interest, because you're just doing "spreadsheet work" otherwise.
I have thousands of hours in HoI4, but that's because I'm a WW2 history nerd. My time in Vic2 and EU4 is considerably less. And Stellaris, while a solid game, just bores me at times because you are forced into very rigid systems that are only made somewhat different from the race creation screen.
The latest version of MoO has some of the best, immersive visuals and presentation "value" (i.e, cinematics, audio, etc.) in the genre, and provides its own "interest". I even find spiritual successors to MoO (like Interstellar Space: Genesis) hard to play because they are so opaque.
I also find it ironic how real-time tactical gameplay has overtaken a lot of the strategy gaming world, when MoO was criticized heavily for this on release.
Total War Warhammer"s domination in the marketplace, matched by revivals in Age of Empires, CoH, DoW, etc. and new games like Ruse, Steel Division, etc. have really checked the popularity growth of turn-based games (or so it seems to me), with the exception of X-com clones. The number of purely turn-based games that have come and gone in recent years is crazy, yet Paradox and Creative Assembly continue to grow.
Bottom line: 2016/2017 was a different time, when turn-based games like Civ, Endless Space, GalCiv, etc. had the dominant "formula". When you add to that the way MoO "purists" hated the new MoO for petty reasons, you can easily see why this game wasn't given a fair shake.
This game may not be as "deep" or complex, but there is something elegant in it's simplicity. And, perhaps most importantly, it's fun in areas where most turn-based games are not, because it has so much character and so many immersive qualities.
Not to mention how well this game runs. MoO is fast to load and easy to exit, and has never crashed for me. Many other 4x games, though, run like crap by comparison.
At the end of the day, MOO:CTS is like a satisfying boardgame that you can endlessly replay and have fun with without having to spend stupid amounts of time learning, and relearning, the rules.

Well, put! That is a spot-on analysis of both the game and the current state of 4X games. It's nice to know that other 4X gamers share my love of this latest version of MoO. The purists pan this game, but I find that I simply enjoy it more.
