Thank you for this - I have an old car project I am working, and after 10 minutes of watching you I am fully convinced I need to hire a professional to fix my squished up fender
Wow. Very impressed. Every time I try to PDR on my daughters' cars when they ding them up, I can't come close to this kind of result. Appreciate your skill level...and it really is an art form. Great video!
I appreciate the craft and mental strategy involved in PDR. I need to find a specialist in this for my Miata fender. I got a $4,300+ estimate from a body shop that essentially involved them replacing the whole panel and stuff I didn’t ask for. I could do that myself, but I want to fix the original metal.
Jim, you are the man. Real World PDR is worth every penny, twice over. Coming from the body shop world, I really like the methods you teach and it’s explained in a way that actually makes sense. FAVORITE VIDEO: is the pep talk in regards to handling and dealing with failures. You rock man! Going to be reaching out for some advanced training soon. Freaking out results: doesn’t help.... and make sure when you throw that tool it can’t bounce and cause a dent in your own truck.
@@RealWorldPDRTraining Thanks Jim, being a mobile repairer here in the UK, means I get a lot of days off due to the heavy rain, so I get plenty of time to work on my videos 😄 lol!
Well, you set a very high bar! I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if you did video/production in a previous career. I’m captured by it, but don’t think as a one man show I’ll ever invest the amount of time necessary to learn all that you do. Really a big fan here.
@@RealWorldPDRTraining Thanks Jim, keep up the good work as it's always great watching other techs at the top of their game as it opens my eyes to different styles and techniques I can try out 👍👍👍
I love looking at these videos because it really stepped up my repair game at the body shop. I can usually get my panels looking like yours did at 9:10. Then I go ahead and sand the panel and use filler to finish the job. Honestly it takes all of the guess work out of repairs and the final product looks excellent 👌
I have to attempt this later today in my driveway after "somebody" clipped a deer on her way to work this morning. I have pretty much none of these tools so it should be interesting trying to do this with suction cup pullers, blocks of wood, and tree branches. I'll reply within the week with the results if it works, or if it winds up being as stupid as it sounds. I figure it's worth a try since it's only stupid till it works.
As an update, since I promised one, it wound up being more than just a dent (parts inside the engine compartment like the windshield wash bottle wound up busted) so it's off getting poked and prodded by insurance adjusters. Hurray...
I did the same thing this past week… a deer hit smack right in the middle of my driver side fender. I hope I can just get it out enough to open my driver’s door. 😅 and of course it happened right before I am due for a state inspection…
Way to go Jim!! That was mangled but it’s coming along great! If I’m repairing nasty stuff like that so close to the headlight il remove the light and Tesa tape the panel edge (where it meets the light) and it stops it kinking or blowing..... tape it to the front panel and you also get more access. I know you totally know what your doing. It’s just a tip for people watching/reading the comments Respect the crowns! Martin
People in these comments thinking they’re ready to tackle this is funny. I don’t think y’all understand the time, patience and skills required to execute a repair like this
Hey man, I’m done arguing with them lol. Every time I tell someone this isn’t a DIY skill, or this particular job is so far away from DIY it’s ridiculous, I get a lot of attitude from strangers… So I say meh… if they can’t take good advice they can mess up their own cars.
@@RealWorldPDRTraining ahaha I don’t blame you, it’d be a full time job replying to all these muppets 😂 fantastic work man, watching masters of this art, like yourself, is so satisfying to me. I’m in the Autobody trade as a combo tech, you’d cry if you saw me using my bars for push to paint 🤣
Freaking out actually went better then I expected, the dent got tired of hearing me freaking out and you’ll never believe it the dent just popped itself back to factory show room condition. It even repainted and polished itself 😂
I have that exact same dent in the same spot that’s been there for about a month. I’ve been trying to find ways to fix it without having to pay someone to do it (currently have money issues). I’ve tried boiling water and a plunger, tried taking the bottom screws out and pushing it out with a hand, but without any luck. So I’m hoping at least the blowtorch and coal glue will help without ripping off the loose bumper I had to glue back together. Either that or my mom finds someone to pay for it
Im driving my grandfathers old truck, its in great shape but it does have hail damage. Id like to try this but im super nervous. I looked at actual schools and the cost isnt something i can do rn. Is it really possible to learn online? I think maybe a video of your students progression would be super neat! I enjoy your videos. They're satisfying to watch! It really is an art form!
Hello. I think if you disconnected the fender from the bumper at the beginning, it would be easier for you to work with metal, because. you took the pressure off the metal!!! From the blow, the wing shrank, and who needs to be relaxed first !!! Good video!!!
How many hours labor gonna be charged to repair this fender in this manner? New fender 155$!(primered…just prep and paint then install) this is great work…on Occassion finding a fender is impossible and this would be useful.
I had an out of control buck run into my fender... Could I use a hair dryer as a source of heat vs the torch?? No seriously... I don't want to burn the garage down... 👍😁
the problem with pdr on large dents is paint damage. Most of these dents are prepared ( kicked with a rubber soled trainer) . Large dents on harder steel inevitably crack the paint (even more so on previous repairs ) Still handy skills to have !
Liked, commented (no surprise there) and subbed. Took the wife's GTI off-roading and found that trees aren't as forgiving as you might think. This vid was a great excuse to spend more on tools than a new fender. Thnaks![SIC]. Gonna check out your w/s too. This looks like a good time.
Jim, do you mind sharing total time spent on this ? Hours ? I usually draw the line somewhere as to how long doing such a PDR repair is justifiable before finishing off as a traditional panel / paint job. Lucky I can do both processes I guess, and on nasty paint damaged repairs, PDR makes the panel / paint stage much smaller / easier.
Some of the real time clips were so beautiful to watch😍 thank you so much unfortunately I don’t have tools so I’m unable to try anything, but I would really like to gain these skills😢
Nice job. Would like to know where you got that kit. That’s all I need, my car has a smaller dent than the one on the video and I think I can get it fixed with a kit like that. Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
Hmm . . . I think I'll go down to the auto salvage yard and see if they'll let me practice on one of their wrecked cars. It would be a great way to get experience without worrying about screwing up. Plus, if I get good at it, I just fixed a fender for them for FREE.
Someone dented up my brand new truck. This gives me hope that it can be repaired. Now, to find a high quality dent repair specialist... that's the issue.
would replacing the panel be just as cost effective? btw..that was amazing. my car got hit with a bobcat bucket just below the driver side mirror and just....ahead of the door panel. rrrrrrrrr. i can't prove who did it so, i'm on my own
I agree my fender messed up on pass side but 250 I can have it all sent and painted but if u got the tools I guess myswell try tools get expensive same w labor prices
Lol yes. I can see why that would be a concern. If you sign up for PDR monthly you have access to everything from beginner to super advanced content. All at your own pace
I was wondering wouldn't it be easier to do the repair if you removed the fender? I can take the fender off my 2002 Honda Accord in less than 10 minutes. With the fender removed, pushing and pounding it back into shape should be much simpler. Or is there some aspect of this process that I am unaware of that makes it better to leave the fender on? I would think the time spent in removing the fender would save tons of time on back end by making the damage easily accessible. What do you think?
It’s a solid idea. But in practice doesn’t work like that . You need to be able to see the metal move (not just beat it with a. Hammer or something) through the whole process. Also the tension of the panel being attached helps the metal move, and frankly keeps it stationary enough to be precise.
I’ve never seen an aftermarket fender that’s pre painted. Seems like that would be a paint match nightmare. PDR is usually more cost effective than replacement parts, and paint. That’s not the only factor though. Same day turnaround is a huge draw for some, original paint, no car fax, maintaining the original finish etc.
I save the pricing discussion for the website www.realworldpdr.com. Customers looking for prices will find that depending on their location and skill of the technician prices will vary.
