I had the great pleasure to mix Fates live for many years. Mark is an absolute tactician. Delicate, forceful, melodic, technical, unique and oh yeah, a masterful timekeeper.
Progressive metal as it grew in the 90's would never have been the same without you Mark! Fates still write very good compositions but even with a great drummer nobody can give this kind of groove , feeling and imaginative innovation! Thank you for everything!
...and to the current day. The young prog metal Drummers are zondering without even knowing it. Spread the word about Fates Warning being among the earliest and most significant pioneers of prog metal, because the internet masters have been rewriting music history and writing Fates out of it.
I'm not a drummer but I nevertheless can highly appreciate the subtleties and the elegance of your drums parts. Thanks Mr. Zonder for all those great albums with FW.
One of my favourite bands since I first heard No Exit the year it was released. Best prog metal band ever- and a lot of the reason is the extremely strong songwriting; too many bands focus on chops and shredding instead of song craft. The earlier stuff is so good but I loved the last four albums also.
Best fucking drummer in that genre.. most creative and technical. I remember auditioning a drummer who was a freak about Fates Warning.. he wrote out all the parts..We hired him.. I listened to Mark's recordings for years.. no one comes close and it's sad that they replaced him with an average metal drummer.
Finally learned this on bass. Mark, you're a genius. The grooves in this song are tricky, but it's remarkably easy to keep in time over that hi-hat part in the verse even with the syncopation. The drum parts have so many identifiable audio cues; it really makes me appreciate it a lot more now that I've played along.
@@markzonder3771 The second half of the verse (where the bass drops the groove for the stream of muted 8th notes) is where it really shines, for me; the bass line subtly changes on the last time through there and the crescendo on the hi-hat is a perfect cue for the timing. When I was learning the song originally I figured I'd have to explicitly count that part, but there's enough context that you can just listen for the cues.
I saw them and iguanas in TJ about 30 years ago I was working at a college radio station so I walked in there dressing room! Ask for some signatures and then I left! Great band?
Wow...I have seen Fates several times, no weak links in this band, after Rush jumped the shark with Power Windows, it was Fates, Queensryche, and Savatage, and Crimson Glory from there, never looked back.
Anybody know when this video was taken? I'm guessing it was during the Parallels tour, because I've never heard Alder hit those high notes on this song live before.
Adler sounds horrible, Aresti clearly wasn’t there (his solo played by the keyboard player), Zonder was the only reason to see them live at that time. They should have put him at the front of the stage....... he is incredible.
no trigger, auto tune, just pure
talent and way magic 😆👍👏✌️

Tribe?
That is so cool that you got to see that for years. Loved fates since the beginning
One of the greatest drummers in the entire history of drumming !!!
Yep

Mark's drumming has given me cold chills ever since I was little kid listening Fates Warning!
100%
@@BooMMusicPlay Me too, bro! Totally! Never gets old to me!

This man is a beast...even Terry Brown worked with Peart from Rush admitted it....❤️
Amazing. None of the other drummers I've heard play this with Fates have ever done the hi-hat parts in the verses correctly. Mind-bending.
totally agree one of the finest drummers of ANY genre..........
That cymbal work is unmatched. Incredible!
Precision playing on this level is so satisfying to witness. Puts a smile on my face that is difficult to wipe away.
Like Terry Brown said ...he's a beast!!
Never getting bored watching these videos.
This never gets old! I friggin love watching him
What a treatment! Smart, tasteful, groovy, innovative... Zonder all the way!
Dont know how MANY times you put a smile upon my face ? ... :) GRAZIE !
Still my favorite, after 25+ years. Really well written and played! Excellent musicality and feel for the songwriting! Amazing.
How you keep those patterns straight is....amazing! Thank you for the great tunes through the years Mark!
I wish my brother was still here, so I could send him this vid. He would have loved it.
So much magic going on there...
I'm not a drummer but I nevertheless can highly appreciate the subtleties and the elegance of your drums parts.

Thank you zonder for all those wonderful years you gave us with warlord fates warning.and the other projects you've done over the years.
Great! Mark Zonder one the best drummer of the world. Tanks Mark! God bless you!
Il maestro!!! Amazing precision/groove/originality. Hard to beat.
...to fall in love with :-) Big cinema, big tennis.
Неподражаемый! Наверное, самый крутой барабанщик в своем стиле, да и в остальных, впрочем, тоже!

He nails it!!!

This is amazingly unique and great
that's an awesome groove Mark! Always loved your drumming on that group of songs!
Zonder is a beast
Such a great and unique drummer!
amazing drummer....love it!
one amongst the greatest, respect.
Kinda like Stewart Copeland - using trad grip but still able to whack that snare drum (and china!) with enough force.
Fantastic!
Masterpiece.
Exquisitly tasteful drumming. Thanks Mark!

Wow Zonder, I love your work :)

Amazing creativity,great feel.Always a favorite

Jarzombek needs to use these as tutorials !
The man !

The master of subtlties! Jarzombek is very good but MARK is the best , Paul Craddick is my #2 !
L O V E THIS!
What's the round thing above the rack tom? It sort of looks, and sounds, like he's hitting a microphone mount.
Wow
drum sticks dance 😊✌️
Mark, what type of trigger sound produces the “clapping” sound that’s on your right? Never been able to find something close on my electronic kit
Best prog drummer of ALL time. Peart is second.
Do I hear a little Rush Big Money influence?
In terms of technique and skill. Zonder = Neil Peart on steroids.
He's the guy..
On the studio version he plays this on a electronic drum set
No,
Fuck...watch that....how can u not look at that and ...not go...mother!!:
Portnoy probably couldn't keep this up all night ! Lol
Just when I start to think I am a good drummer, I watch Mark Zonder play and realize I suck!!!!
Love Tommy Lee but....
