Respectfully, if you are in the US, that is a bad, bad sign. It's a sign that whoever placed your implant does not possess the depth of knowledge that he/she should in order to be placing implants in the first place. If this person DID possess the depth of knowledge...and experience...he/she would've given you at least SOME guidelines about protecting the site, especially the first day or two. This is a fact that should be more well publicized, but it's not. Dental implantation should be an area of dental specialty, but right now, it's not. Any dentist, with a day of training...or no training...is licensed to place implants in the US. There is no "specialty" required, and dental implants are BIG money-makers. So ANY unethical, greed-driven dentist can do this. So, as consumers WE have to do our own due diligence, and *make certain* that our dentist is licensed, know any areas of specialty they've obtained, *how many implants they place each year vs. their failure rate*, and *how long they've been placing implants*. Just because someone is a great general dentist does NOT mean they have the depth of knowledge, education, and YEARS OF EXPERIENCE *successfully* placing implants. I cannot say this enough, any medical or dental professional who brags, is arrogant, acts haughty and/or entitled, or superior to you...RUN. You want someone who has a moral compass, is passionate about oral health and tooth preservation continues acquiring knowledge throughout their career, and takes the time to educate you themselves OR to have their assistant educate you (running a dental practice is a business, and a dental assistant can educate you as well, if not better, than a dentist due to time constraints). Make sure you check out your dentist THOROUGHLY, and especially to see how many complaints have been filed against them, any open lawsuits, etc. There are some very competent dental professionals out there, at all levels, but there are also some money-hungry ones, too...and you have to be careful you don't just go to anyone. Due your due diligence BEFORE you allow someone to drill into your mandible or maxilla (which is VERY close to your brain, you do NOT want infection there).

I went back after 3 months and my doctor said everything looked good and I got my crown about 2 weeks later. I think being healthy really helped with the healing and not having problems with my implant.
I had an implant done then for some reason my body rejected the implant (I don't know the medical terms to explain this) in short it had to be taken out and then the whole process had to be repeated. The dentist did not charge me for the second process. I had the base of the implant put then had to wait six months for the bone to fuse with the implant, then he put the crown however after a month the left side of my face became sore and swollen. I had to be on antibiotics and pain meds then when the swelling went down, he rechecked the area and that's when when he informed me, he will have to take it out. I nearly wept because the process is debilitating. So we had to schedule in a week then he took it out cleaned the area then put the base of the implant. He gave me most of these instructions and I stayed with it for one year while still going back for multiple reviews. After a year, he checked, and rechecked and double checked to ensure that my bone had infused with the implant and there was no pain, discomfort or any felt pressure when he touched the surrounding gum area. I then did bitewings (I call it x-ray for teeth 😂) for him to Countercheck the implant and bone infusion. When he was satisfied, three months later he put the crown and I am happy to report that it is not 14years of bliss that I at times forget that I have an implant. I don't know the medical terms to explain these whole story so I just explained it as best as I can. For sure, the process is not easy however, my dentist gave me very effective pain medications as well as antibiotics that really helped. I also, religiously followed all the instructions he gave me to ensure that the dental implant is not "rejected" a second time. Thank you for taking the time to read through my long essay of a text. Thank you so so much for your thorough and very helpful explanation, tips, wisdom, and advice. I am so grateful to have come across your videos. First, with wisdom tooth and tooth extractions and now for dental implants. I had a bottom molar extracted along with my bottom wisdom teeth and had a bone graft placed at the time. Now three months later, next week I am getting the dental implant process started. Was very nervous and not knowing what to expect with recovery, what all exactly was going to be happening, etc. Thank you so much for putting me at ease. I was really worried about the gum getting cut into and pulled back and what that was going to feel like after. But after watching your video, I think it may be on par if not less pain than it was getting my wisdom teeth and tooth out (I hope!). Thank you thank you!
I had two extractions, implants, and bone grafts done yesterday afternoon via IV sedation. When I woke up, I was in severe pain. Luckily, the IV meds made me able to go back to sleep. When I woke up late last night, I was in very minimal pain, and this morning I woke up with literally no pain. The sutures are a little pokey into my lip, but I don't mind that. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing (the lack of pain), but as long as I'm not hurting, I'll take that as a good sign. Haha. I didn't want opiates (I'm afraid of them!), so I feel incredibly grateful I'm no longer in pain. This video has helped immensely in what I'm supposed to do vs. what I'm NOT supposed to do. Couch potato is it! :)

@@raybrown8412 I was so anxious, too! Are you being put under? The pain was super minimal overall. If you're given pain meds, it'll be a total breeze! I took a mixture of ibuprofen and Tylenol (4 ibuprofen + 2 extra strength Tylenol - this is what my surgeon recommended) every 6 hours, and if you take Rx pain meds with it, you'll be good. I swear you'll do fine! I was a nightmare before it, like crying like a baby in the stupid dentist chair. Haha! :D
Many thanks, this is real informative. I had an extraction and implant done together. The video answered lots of questions in full. Just one question remains - how long should the ibuprofen anti inflammatory be taken after the implant - and the response from my team was 'once the pain subsides you're done with anti inflammatory (Advil.) 8 days now and most/almost all of the pain has subsided. Thank you for the explanations - we all need an 'Implants 101' since the professionals doing these procedures are real busy with work. It's all routine while we patients can be completely clueless. Three to six months recovery - UGH! lol

Also, I respect your blunt, unapologetic description of the dental implant procedure, "I just drilled a hole in your jaw and
Would be interesting to know why are those things not allowed. I had sinus lift, was on mild pain meds for a day and a half, drinked, smoked, was doing long brisk walks at 150-160BPM - zero issues, all healed up nicely. Now I had 3 implants placed, only had a 2/10 pain (or pinching) from sutures, took ketoprofen once (an hour after the procedure) and that was that, no pain, no issues. Smoking, drinking beer, walking a lot - no bleeding, no pain, no nothing, not even feeling tired. Only thing I do is make sure the food is soft and cool/luke warm. PS. My dentist said it's basically same steps as when you have an extraction.
It's good to know that Periodontal disease can occur even with implants. Learnt several things like not brush for at least 2 weeks after crown placement. I don't feel any pain from the extraction but am suffering persistent pain from my implant site. It goes away when I take painkiller though. I don't have bleeding or swelling problem. Anyone who has any idea or experienced the same?
Yes. I’ve had 28 extractions, and scraping of infected bone and bone grafting to replace bone. COvId shut down the VA hospital for all non emergency care and it left me sitting prepped for 28 new crown replacements…and a canceled surgery. My bone became infected. I’ve now had 16 surgeries and last Tuesday was my final. Complete top arch under General anesthesia in the OR. All teeth extracted, bone scraped, ridge smoothing, 8 titanium bases loaded and packed with a ton of bone grafting, the pain was unbearable at times. My dental implants look nothing like the ones they show on you tube. I am beginning to think I got screwed!!! My surgeon had me rinse on the say day and did not tell I need a soft diet. I ate a bagel when I got home but don’t remember it.
If I don't need a bone graft, should I get an implant immediately after tooth extraction? Or wait until after I heal to make sure that no there is no infection remaining in the socket? If I wait to get an implant, I'm concerned about the neighboring teeth moving, whereas if I get the implant right away, I'm concerned about recurring infection.
@@milliem8051 My dentist extracted the previously root canal treated tooth and did a socket preservation (bone graft). Put a couple of stitches over the hole and those dissolved in about 10 days. No infection. I had to wait 5 months for the bone to grow into the socket. Went to an oral surgeon, who placed the implant. Waited 4 more months for the implant to integrate with the bone. Went back to my dentist. He put on the custom abutment and crown. Total time 9 months from tooth extraction. Since then I have lost some bone on the palate, up behind the tooth, but the implant is secure into the bone and the crown doesn't move.
Thank you doc I’m getting mine done tomorrow and I appreciate the information .
How was it ?
How did they turn out?
@@raybrown8412 They healed super well and they screwed in the new teeth in September! Since then, I've totally forgotten they're implants. :) Thanks for asking!
I am having grafts put in this Thursday. Implants 6 months later. I am super anxious. Looking for some reassurance.
Haha! :D
@@SmittenKitten.The ibuprofen and Motrin was in the IV?
That's a perfect name for a dentist above! He's gonna make thousands doing this procedure!
Nice explanation sir...Had my lower jaw single implant two days back...
I go on Thursday to get mine. This was very helpful . Thank you
How was it?
How did it go? Any complications?
Many thanks, this is real informative. I had an extraction and implant done together. The video answered lots of questions in full. Just one question remains - how long should the ibuprofen anti inflammatory be taken after the implant - and the response from my team was 'once the pain subsides you're done with anti inflammatory (Advil.) 8 days now and most/almost all of the pain has subsided. Thank you for the explanations - we all need an 'Implants 101' since the professionals doing these procedures are real busy with work. It's all routine while we patients can be completely clueless. Three to six months recovery - UGH! lol
Great info. I'm having a Conus denture(very similar to an "All on 4") installed next month and I'm trying to prep myself as much as possible. This was very thorough and well laid out. Thank you so much.
Learned a ton here. Thanks Doc. No HIIT on the stat bike or deadlifts for me next week.😬
So...for 2 weeks sit perfectly still and don't eat or drink anything. I was considering implants, but at 76 years old and after listening to all the post-op dos and donts, plus all the risk factors, I've just about decided against having the procedure done.
Thank you, I had 2 implants today, with bone graft. This is very helpful. I didn't get a care sheet, however I do love the office and doctor who completed my surgery.
Same here no care sheet, but Love them as well 😊
Hi Zory, How did you feel with the implant?
How much did take the painkillers drugs: steroid drugs?
Thanks.
@@yousseflaaguid660 Hello, my implants were the 2 upper laterals. I only took the pain killer which was ibuprofen for 2 days. (Day of surgery and the following day.) I didn't have pain in my mouth but I had a headache. I couldn't bite into a sandwich or anything for 1 month. I am very pleased with everything. I have a flipper so you do not see the missing teeth. I go back in about 2 weeks to check healing, and get x-rays to see when I can have the crowns placed.
@@_zory Thank you Zory, I hope all goes well.
My dentist extracted one maxillar tooth due an apical lesion, I am afraid about implant and the risk of implants and also the maintenance of the implants.
@@yousseflaaguid660 My pleasure. I understand I was skeptical and went through a lot just to get to this point. I waited for a while before making the decision. But it all came together smoothly. I also will have to have good dental hygiene but I've purchased a water pick which should help. I think its easier to keep an implant clean vs bridge. Pray on it! You will make a good decision. I will say, teeth for me give me more confidence so I wouldn't change my decision. 😬
Super informative, thanks Doc!
Great video. A lot of very useful information! Thanks. 👍
Wow!!! That was some thorough information. Just got mines today. Thank you
Can you do a video on overdentures post-op?
I will be getting an implant of tooth 12. I had a surgical extraction of one of my back teeth that hurt for WEEKS and Bled for about two weeks. It was the worst pain ever and it wasn't even an implant. But it eventually went away. To my great surprise. I was sure my bone was broken or something.
wooww i've already messed up! i had tea, and hot food a few hours after my surgery. D:
No one told me :[ they didnt say anything about carbonated drinks either, but did make sure to get the point across when it comes to smoking. -sigh- taking your advice now, and hopefully everything works out.
More US dentists should borrow your "couch potato" descriptive. I prefer to take the stairs rather than use an elevator. However, I quickly learned that unless I wanted to FEEL a very painful throbbing of my own heartbeat AFTER taking the stairs, I should just use the elevator for the first week.
Also, I respect your blunt, unapologetic description of the dental implant procedure, "I just drilled a hole in your jaw and
Welp definitely messed up...did some mouthwash a day after my implants. And wasnt told about hot beverages...yay for me
all ok? any update? I made some small mistakes as well.
Very informative and great instructions. I am considering implants and doing my research.
Very Valuable information Dr. John Thank you, I'm in the last few weeks of this horrendous journey and can't wait to get me a rib-eye. 😁
Thank you so much for the info...especially the explanations. ❤
It's good to know that Periodontal disease can occur even with implants. Learnt several things like not brush for at least 2 weeks after crown placement. I'm really interested to know to know my implant surgeon is half-world away and I can only visit once a year. In that case, can I visit, my regular dentist every 3 months?
Where is this doctor located because I've learned so much form him.
he deserves to be teaching in dental school, for sure.
Great advice, great video. 👍 Thanks.
Thanks so much for all the helpful information. Much appreciated.
Very honest assessment thank you so much
Useful information and helpful.
Awesome video

Great video and info!
I broke every single one of these rules 😭. I just had implant surgery 4 days ago.
Hello,how are u feeling now?
I ll have 3 implant surgery tomorow,I m soo scared and worrying a lot for the recovery part.

@@jakebusch1638 Ohhh,that s great,happy for you!!I hope my journey'll be smooth too.
I have to stop watching all stories(some of them horror ones) about implant.
"hopefully get better after that" WOW... that's so comforting lol
@doctorjohn, first of all thank you for sharing all this information with us, but would like your point of view on what if patient goes out if the country for example Mexico to get their implants after having extractions here in the USA, how would one follow all these procedures, how long would one have to stay at location before heading back home to assure there are no complications?
Lastly, where are you located and what are your fees for doing a all on 6 fixed teeth( non mini implants used)?
I had an Implant placed last Thursday and I still have pain I’ve been ice I’ve been eating cold stuff I’ve been taking antibiotics I’ve been doing cold foods only I’ve been doing puddings and Mac and cheese but I’m still sore I’ve been careful but can you be sensitive in that spot where your chewing molars was if you had a tooth extraction there.
how r u doing now? its been a year
having an implant done in an hour! wish me luck! 🤞
Very helpful! Thank you!
Do you always need suture with dental implant even when it's 3D Cone beam guided?
I had no pain whatsoever during and after the procedure, is there something wrong with me? I also have no bruising or bleeding. I do find tiny white pieces of something in my mouth, what is that?
Same here, no pain at all so far
I had the genetic luck of not getting adult teeth for both the bottom and top first molars. I now have 4 matching implants to make up for that 🙂
Thanks for this informative video. I am having a dental implant next month and I want to be prepared.
You say not to touch your face where the implant is but you also say to use an ice pack for swelling. Is that a good idea?
Isn’t there a long wait period from the time you get bone grafting to the day you get the implant screw? I thought there was at least 3 month wait?
Amazing information 🙏🙏🙏
❤❤❤❤❤. I confused with rinse peroxide?
my surgeon and dentist did an implant to me yesterday but he didn't advice me all that T_T !!! I rinsed my mouth and i drink hot tea !! Now i woke up with my cheek swollen :'(
Are your implants ok ? I also drank carbonated drink :( and I spit and I lightly rinsed .... I hope nothing happens
@@raponzel2006 everything is fine now thank god lol But my cheek was blue and swollen for a month and the pain was killing me. I took all kind of painkillers T_T
Ma ru so glad to hear you’re fine ! Not the blue cheek part lol but I’m glad you healed even if it took longer 😭. Thanks so much for your response ! 🙂
What about numbness after implants are placed? My lip, chin and a few teeth on my lower right side are still numb one month after the impants were placed. The implants have felt fine. No pain. No infection. The dentist said the nerve gets pressured and there can be numbness for weeks, even months. It is not uncommon. What can be done to get the feeling back sooner? Massage not really working. Massage the nerve area or massage the numb area? B Vitamins were recomended to heal the nerve.
Where to find some sort of manual regarding preparation for and after procedure ?
*there are four other Dr Johnny Thousand's in the same clinic?* what are the chances. -JC
What do you do with the blood and fluid that accumulate in the mouth if no spitting??
The uncovering surgery of the implants under the gums half year after needs also stitches?
Had all my teeth pulled for all on 4 top and bottom. The dentures are sliding around and making sore spots, dentist out f town
Just got my tooth #19 with implant screw. How many days after can I work out?
You made me laugh several times and it hurts 😭😂
Thank you so so much. ❤
Helo sir
My maxillary first molar is missed
My left side getting sinking..
I have implant surgery after 5 months..
My doubt is that is my face continually sink?
After implant is there any chance to get back my face in to normal?
After how many days or months would I be able to get my permanent teeth being placed on the implant after surgery?
3 or 6 months it is up to your healing process.
Excellent!
How are you supposed to eat with holes in your mouth before the implants go in
Why do none of these vlogs never mention opiates for pain? I understand the opiate issues, but they are still needed.
I just did my first implant surgery three days ago. I still feel the throbbing pain from under the implant. Three days passed and the pain is still as awful as the first day. I saw so many people talking about implant is less pain then tooth extraction. Not in my case. I had one side for implant and at the same surgery, the other side for extraction.
I’m now 5 days post op and swelling has gone down, but bruising has gotten worse. Pain is much more manageable. This. Stuff. Hurts. Badly, it just hurts.
I’m sorry and I hope you heal quickly and well.
@@jennschiavo1 Hi, sorry to hear what you 've been through. I only did one-tooth implant when I posted my above message. Guess what, it turned out that my implant was a failure. That is why the pain was not going away. I got refunded and I went for denture as a solution. Good luck to you.
@@zleml thank you for your reply. And I’m so sorry 😞 that is my fear. After all this…they will fail. And I’ve been through so much pain with these surgeries….I am done. If they fail it’s dentures. I can’t do it anymore.
@@zleml hi, did your implant removed? is it painful when removed? after it removed, how long it heals the gum and did u get denture right away?
@@myilham81 hi, my implant was a failure. The dentist refused to take my complaint seriously at first, but then he had to xray the work he did on me. He immediately saw that the implant was a fail. So what put in was put out and I refused to go through implant from there. I had removable denture instead and it has been working well for me.
Same for after bone graft and extraction
My doctor used self dissolving cat gut sutures, does it give bad outcome??
My dental implants look nothing like the ones they show on you tube. I am beginning to think I got screwed!!! My surgeon had me rinse on the say day and did not tell I need a soft diet. I ate a bagel when I got home but don’t remember it.
How can I brush my teeth? I only have my titanium implant but they said to just brush around but I can’t!! Help me doc
I'm ready to smile again 😁
If I don't need a bone graft, should I get an implant immediately after tooth extraction? Or wait until after I heal to make sure that no there is no infection remaining in the socket? If I wait to get an implant, I'm concerned about the neighboring teeth moving, whereas if I get the implant right away, I'm concerned about recurring infection.
Please see a Dentist, someone that is qualified. Don't ask youtube. Best of luck😊🥀
Did you get implants? How’d it go?
The gums cannot attach to the abutment, like they do with a tooth, so this is a different feeling. If possible, save your teeth.
@Razz Matazz thanks for explaining. I guess I’ll go with crowns and hope those last, and implants as a last resort.
@@milliem8051 Crowns are the way to go if you have decay and part of the tooth or the filling material is gone. Even the best fitting crowns will have a microgap, and bacteria can get in, so make sure you keep them clean, same as you would with normal teeth. Brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once at night. Try to watch sugar intake. For excellent videos showing dental procedures, I recommend watching Steven Cutbirth Dental Minute UA-cam channel. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
