That's one hell of a job! I have on my workbench the same MacBook and not turning on, although voltages are fine. Will check it on Monday. Thumbs up, man!
What a brilliant solution, I've just fixed my MBP this way using a piece of copperwire from an old transformer because it's very thin and has excellent insulation. This fix is quicker than replacing the keyboard.
Firstly thank you for the Video. You make some great content. I had almost the same problem except mine had a bad ground (middle point) the Black flex was good. So I did the reverse I took the silver flex off the button and put the black flex back on the the button and screwed it back in place and now it has chassis ground to work with and boom On and Off work perfectly. Thank you!
Dead power buttons are incredibly common on these macbooks. I now have 2 both with this issue and have watched this video several times. I feel fairly confident watching this I could do the actual physical repair. The difficult part for me is understanding the multimeter and what all those numbers mean. Its very likely that without having that knowledge I could run the wire, do the soldering etc and yet have totally misjudged the issue based on a lack of understand the multimeter values, what they mean, and what I am looking for. Do you have any videos on the multimeter and how I might learn? I am in the US and I need to do this fix.
Really good video. Your electronic skills are awesome. You are able to fix any kind of problems. Thanks. I learned a lot about electronics since I start watching your tutorials.
Heeeyyyy- THANK YOU! I did as you did, and it WORKS! Probably not as beautiful as yours, I had a much thicker wire, so the power button is a bit stiff, but still, it works, and thats good enough for me!
Here, the keyboard replacement is cheap. Around 15 dolars. I'd rather replace it than exposing the motherboard kb connector to any sort of soldering. But great job. You're a monster.
Hi sir. I'm learning a lot from you. I have a question on macbook that automatically turns on when plugging the charger, without pressing power button. Thank you.
hi I just found your videos on youtube and for me they are must better than a movie with bruce willis I love Bruce Willis Movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway first I have to apologize for my poor english I'am french and live in south near Bordeaux. I try doing like you on a macbook power button Kapout and now that is funny the laptop start by it self I probably made a big mistake(fault) maybe you can explain me what the problem is? Anyway thank a lot for your videos best Regards Domi
abdallah abdoul you have to understand how the internal power of a device is working before you can use a external voltage supply to find shorts. He is doing his job for 20-30years now and now the circuits. At least you should now how boost/buck converters and mosfets are operating.
I'd class this as a "temporary" fix rather than a *dodgy* one, it lasts as long as it lasts, if it fails, you just redo it the expensive way. Sometimes temporary fixes outlast the rest of the device. I had a calculator that lasted an extra 3 years which only worked with a Polo Mint (Lifesaver) wedged under the board. 3 years later calculators had gone from being expensive to cheap (I'm old enough to remember that).
I have the same non working power button, however I can't even turn the machine on by shorting pin 5 to ground. it turns on when I plug the MagSafe charger in due to the auto Power on feature, however I can't turn it off by the power button either. I have also tried the power pads which do not turn it on so I don't believe a new keyboard would work either. Any ideas as to the reason?
Hi mate, I opened my mbp mid 2012 15 inch (non retina version) for SSD upgrade. But after opening and reassembling, everything fine. But macbook gets started up, when I plug in mag safe. So its technically short circuiting the power switch I believe. Can you advise how I can proceed?
The pin is pretty funny... can only be followed now by a personalized shirt, or hat that says "Dodgy". ô¿ô Great video, button works... and didn't cost the guy and arm and leg. That's what counts... well done!
Every video you do like this, if 100 people copy the solution that's 100 motherboards, aluminium chassis, LCD's worth of E-waste saved from landfill. (lets not kid ourselves electronics recycling standards by apple is atrocious level of efficiency).
Hot glue hero ha ha, the sender has a great sense of humor :-D :-D Mixing keyboards and power buttons does not sound too clever, apple should know better.
now everyon's doing the same stupidity, my laptop failed in the first month but due to lockdown ... no service ... i had to open and disconnect the keyboard to use external keyboard its an Acer Aspire with integrated power button
There is nothing soldered in the MacBook Pro's (Pre Retina) keyboard, it is all very tiny screws (I've just replaced the keyboard in 2 MBPs). I guess you are confusing the MBP keyboard with other models that have rivets instead of screws (the Retina MBP & MB Air maybe?). That being said, I think your repair really makes sense because of the poor quality of replacement keyboards. It would have been a shame to replace everything only to fix the power button.
This is not dodgy! The entire construction is dodgy from factory they could very well designed that computer in a better way, never liked Apple never will...
Time spent doing all this I would have had the motherboard out and the hundred little keyboard screws in and out already. How can someone just spend so much time trying to find the power button pin? Does he not know Louis rossman has the schematics and so do hundreds of other people? Amazing waste of time to do a nasty repair. Should replace the keyboard properly!!!
That's one hell of a job! I have on my workbench the same MacBook and not turning on, although voltages are fine. Will check it on Monday. Thumbs up, man!
honestly I watch every of your video in my free time and that is the best spent time ever

good job!... a little late, but, you forgot to clean the flux with isoprophyl alcohol, that can cause trouble in the future. Thanks for sharing
Think you it works 100℅

ty for video, time is running faster in train :)
So what was the reason why the circuit has increased resistance? Is it manufacturing problem?
Nice one .
thanks
Man, you're awesome! Do you have any experience with Xiaomi laptops? Link me about your fee for a repair!

All 13" A1278 models can be changed with each other.
