- Mega Man X5 was originally planned to be the final game in the Mega Man X series, though that ultimately didn't pan out. But it's also a game that some love, some hate, and that many seem to feel indifferent towards, despite Mega Man X5 trying to do many things to set it apart from other parts of the X series. So, today on RETROspective, Jamie dives in deep with this game she first played as a kid and goes into why, despite its flaws, it is NOT a bad game!

We need a remake of the whole X saga to make the story something that FINALLY makes sense. Also, Capcom would make a lot of money with it.
The ride bike segment of Squid Adler's stage is half the reason I was good at memorizing material for exams in school
Oh! Before I forget,
1) The "Cataclysm theory" claiming Zero killed the Classic series cast that was popularized by the webcomic Bob and George was actually _disproven_ by Capcom themselves.
2) Mega Man X: Command Mission takes place _one_ century after X8, whereas the Zero series takes place _several_ centuries after the X series, so it's entirely plausible for them both to be the same timeline.
I actually read Bob and George back in the day and I remember that. However, I seem to remember it being stated Zero took place in 22XX somewhere?
Would you mind linking me the thing where Capcom disproved it? I'm legit curious
@@StuffWePlay it was in advertisements for the zero collection, but there are other primary sources that say it takes place in 22xx, which makes way more sense
I really find it ridiculous that Command Mission is a century past the last X game (whatever that will be, hoping it's not X8) and yet Axl still has not discovered his origins at that point in time. Dude, if it really has been at least a hundred years, he shoulda' just given up.

Actually, Command Mission and the Zero series both take place in alternate 22XXs, but Megaman X7 and X8 happened in both timelines and Zero's ending in X6 is at the end of the timelines. The devs confirmed this
The reason the maverick names were changed was because the lady that was localizing the text wanted to surprise her husband by naming the bosses after his favorite musicians.
Agreed it's not bad, actually I was just replaying it and it's even better than I remember. It's like MM&B to me, it's far from beginner friendly but gets better each time. Although I still prefer other entries, I'll be getting a copy soon.

X5 is not a bad game but sadly it is just impossible for me to ignore how cheap, unpolished and rushed it feels for what should've been the grand finale of the X series. Weirdest thing is that x5 was released multiple years after X4 but still has this "rushed mega man game" feel to it (not to X6's extent however)
I can live with the lack of anime cutscenes but the cutscenes having no voice acting and some of them using very little unique art really hurts the presentation of the game very heavily.
I truly wonder if Capcom just gave the dev team a very small budget or something similar, the game is not bad but it could've been so much better.
I'm honestly surprised they opted for no voice acting in the cutscenes at all tbh

Funny enough, the game balance is the only negative from X6 (the bad dialogue is only from the rushed English version so japanese players didn't had to deal with that)

Maybe because they improved the difficulty, gameplay, responesiveness etc. Who cares about the cutscenes, X4 was way too easy for a Megaman X game. I notice x4 has a lot of nostalgic fans, but x5 was better in almost everyway.
This is a really good video btw. I always thought X5 was a super weird mmx game in its own way so I'm really happy to see this retrospective on the game, especially with how in-depth it is 👀and this video is like 4 months old and u said you played it like 4 times already now so you probably already know but you can actually get both Black Zero and Ultimate Armor X in one playthrough! It's just that once you get one set of armor, you have to get a game over and replay the stage as the other character to get the other set of armor. It's kind of handled in a dumb way imo but with how rough this game is on Zero gameplay-wise it's nice knowing that you don't have to choose since Zero absolutely needs his black armor for those final levels lmao
I got X5 on PC 2 copies for some reason lul but all the names from the PS1 version are the same so we PC players get to have that sweet DUFF McWHALEN as well..

I never understood why X5 was planned to be the finale in the X series when the way I always saw it growing up, the X series was just following the same path as the classic series. As up until 9, 10, and 11 released, there was only Mega Man 1-8. So I assumed X-X8 was just following the line. 8 and ESPECIALLY X5 actually introduced me to the entire franchise and immediately fell in love. Especially with X5’s edgy and emotional music (looking at you Zero Stage 1 and Stage Select 2). I always liked to describe the X series as the edgy, emo teen version of the Classic series lol I do also wish though they would’ve explored more of Wily’s involvement creating Zero and more concretely linking the X and Classic series together and that the characters acknowledged in-game who Wily was in the past and how he met Sigma. It’s all kind of implied for the most part and they show images of Wily when Sigma talks about how he found Zero, but they never explicitly mention Wily’s name
The reason it's supposed to end at X5 is because it lead to the Zero series. In the true ending in X5, Zero sacrifices himself to saved X from Sigma and was building up to the Zero series that they were focusing on.
And X6?
It's bad, but 70% call it 'Guilty Pleasure' . Strange, isn't it?

After playing MM8, I believe that the ride chaser setments of X4 and X5 aren't inherently ass.
MM8 understands that properly telegraphing whats up next does not entirely remove the challenge of a fast-paced vehicle segment. Plus, it's actually fun, even when going for the extras.
If these ride chaser segments weren't like Sonic Advance 3 after zone 2, they could've been great.

Fun Fact: If you got Spiral Pegasus' weapon (which would be Wind Spiral), and then go back to his stage again, you can cheese your way to the location of one of the Gaea Armor parts without getting the Falcon Armor first if you use the weapon, pause the game, turn back to normal X and then go back to the Wind Spiral again. Same thing goes to Spike Rosered's stage too since as long as you're doing that trick, then you would be able to wall jump to the other piece of the Gaea armor without worrying about the instant death thorns on the wall. LOL
Wait, doesn't the zero series say that x and zero fought in the elf wars together or am I just going crazy.

The only thing I don't like about X4 are the annoying voices while playing. X shouldn't say "Boop!" and "Take this!" everytime he jumps and shoots. XD

I'd even say the highest highs of X, personally. In fact, I even overall prefer it to X1. But not X2-4
facts. just played it for the first time and its pretty similar to x1, except you start out hella badass with the fourth armor. What a blast, especially feeling super powerful fighting bosses. you can tell this game helped the zero games be so good

Wait a sec, I did 5 runs and so far the shuttle always succeded for me, perhaps Legacy Collection 2 version has higher chance.

It's just random luck. My first play through (started with Zero) had the Enigma succeed in destroying Eurasia. But when I made a second play through (starting with X), both the Enigma and the Shuttle failed and got the bad ending (and my ranks were PA and GA for Zero and X respectively on both files).
About "VOLT KRAKEN"s stage. I kinda like it.The first section with the hover bike is kinda easy if you let it become easy. But many people are just blocking it from being so. I never had trouble with it. Also, the Guns'N Roses names in the US version, which were taken over to the European Playstation version, kinda sucked. Without the G'N'R reference given at all, since I never listened to this crap, I never understood why Volt Kraken was called Squid "Adler". Or why was a whale called "Duff". That was stupid.
I get this is your head canon, but the x and series don’t have a split timeline, apart from x7-command mission or to x8 and zero, all the events of the x series are canon to the zero series with zero’s x6 ending happening at the end of the x series. The idea that there is a timeline spilt anywhere else is a result of years of misinformation in the community because people don’t actually pay attention to plot details or sources outside of the games

it's not a bad game, it just feels like there could be more to it. it was also the first mega man game i played so i do have fond memories of playing it (especially the soundtrack)

My favorite game! I swear X8 is so "beloved" but everytime i play it i wish i was playing x5. X8 Is just gimmick after cheap gimmick. I swear theres like 3 platforming stages. It really says something when falling down a well and skipping across some falling platforms is my favorite section. (Burn rooster stage) Because you can actually move around as X and the gang. Every other level is like reliving x6 nightmares. Cheap spike placement and just swarming with enemies in some areas. Its unbearable sometimes. And omg the retry chips with the unfair levels is just mind numbing. Most levels i barely sqeak off. I swear x and pals have rockets up their butts or somthing. They feel so fast and tight to a flaw. Its wild. Only x game i have not beat and ive beat every other many of times over. Even x7 and x6

Ok so, zero didn’t kill the classic series cast and his purpose was never to kill megaman or light, zero was made so wily could say he made a robot that surpassed any of lights creations, basically a final fuck you to light.
I dont think anybody really thinks X5 is a bad game... It's still better than most of other PS1 games at the time... It is just not as amazing as the other 4 previous games, that are god tier games... But is a great game for sure

X6 is a pile of scrap garbage , but there's a lot of shiny things to like in that garbage in the music, and a few of the levels and bosses. Plus it's hard for replayability.
X5 is better, but only by a little, and not so much shiny pieces. Needed more polish to match X4. The music is fine, but not quite as good as X4 and X6, the levels and bosses are a mix of meh, and pretty good. The Zero fight is why we all play it, but it's easy. Dynamo is kinda cool, but makes no sense, why help Sigma destroy the world? Where will Dynamo live afterwards ? Vile's so much cooler. The saving grace of X5 would've been the hard-hitting strength of the ending, with Zero's sacrifice.... But X6 undoes all that XD so I like X6 better.

X5 is actually a good game. But I had to learn to accept few things.
First thing is to accept that whether Zero turns maverick or not (Enigma Cannon success or shuttle success) is purely random and no solution told ever worked for me. Collecting the Enigma and Shuttle parts is bullshit.
Second thing is to accept that you need to lose some hours before even the first defeated maverick lets you chose life+ or energy+ and also has you gaining an item from it. So the first maverick needs to be on level 8 as the minimum. Then I can gain 8 items as I like.
So I shave of some hours, throw the Enigma Cannon and the Shuttle mission off without second thought, Zero goes poof 100% and I can play Mega Man X5 as a pure X game.
Anyone struggling to keep Zero as a playable character will most likely have a hard time.
It’s not bad, it’s aggressively mediocre.
X6 is better even with its wacky stage design and balancing

Yeah. X5 gets too much hate. It's certainly not the best X game and it's nowhere near as good as X1, X2 or X4. Shoot. I even think X8 is better than X5. But it's far from an bad game. It could've been alot better. Sure. But people are overreacting to this game so badly when we games like X6, X7 and as controversial as it maybe; X3, that are far worst. For me, X5 kinda falls in an mid tier of X games and that's not an bad thing.
