- This is the story of the Gizmondo - the worst-selling video game system of all time.
It's a story of violence, Windows CE, Swedish mafias, missing money, and sticky balls. And in the end, it all culminated in the crash of a one-of-a-kind Ferrari on a highway in California.
This is The Art of Failure - Gizmondo: Life and Death.
Announced in mid-2022, this one took over a year and some to get to a point I was happy with, hence why it's now releasing in December 2023! It's also my way to wrap up not only The Art of Failure but Stuff We Play as a whole.
In the past 18 months, my husband and I have moved to Germany, I've begun working in a creative role in the video game industry, and I've been fortunate enough to get to speak at events on topics related to my field at events ranging from Gamescom & Devcom to local industry meetups, with more planned for next year.
That said, while I still love producing videos, UA-cam at this point is a hobby, and I'd honestly like to make content on subjects not strictly related to the industry I work in for a living. I'll still be (hopefully) active on Bluesky and Tiktok though, and have already dipped my toes there into making content based on urban planning and my pet snail, Snelly.

Can you make a video about the NES bootleg Master Fighter VI? if you don't know what is, i don't blame you, for it's a very obscure bootleg. In a nutshell, Master Fighter VI is a port of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition for the NES. Surprisingly, it has all the characters from the champion edition of Street Fighter 2

Found a Gizmondo at a flea market today and this was one of the first video results when I looked it up. I knew the Gizmondo had a colourful history, but wow, I didn't know the lore went that deep!

Huh, I actually remember the bee commercial. Having said this, I absolutely did not remember what the commercial was supposed to be advertising. I spent my money on a PSP which I still own today.
This is probably the best video on the whole Gizmondo story out there. There were even things in here I was not aware of and I remember it when it happened. I've owned a Gizmondo since 2007. They had a decent little homebrew scene for a while but the forums eventually died and took all records of that with it.
The Gizmondo itself was a nice piece of hardware. Considering it was built with nowhere near the budget Nintendo and Sony had access to, and in record time, it's very impressively polished. The engineering team did a great job.
I like the game library too. It doesn't really have a lot of games, but none of them are bad. Sadly the most interesting ones were never released, although most have either a demo or alpha build available. I'm glad to see some hit and myth in this video. There is a leaked version out there. Playing it today is surreal, like you're playing something you're not even supposed to know exists. Agaju is another interesting one, sadly only exists as a tech demo, but it was a real AR pioneer. We wouldn't see AR of that kind again until the 3DS and Smartphones.
It kind of makes it all the more surprising the whole thing existed on a business level to fleece investors. They could have just cut and run and not released anything, yet they poured millions into actually producing something of an actually high standard.
A couple of minor corrections: At the end you state the Gizmondo uses a proprietary battery, implying replacements cannot be found. Not entirely true. There are some Motorolla phone batteries which are still available new that are Gizmondo compatible. And no, the case is not made of rubber. It has a rubberized coating which does rub off with skin oil, but it can be removed with alcohol leaving the solid plastic shell behind. The rubber finish was nice when they were new, but if you find one today that's in good condition, do not touch it.
Man, I am not much older than the gizmindo but I just glad I didn't got it as my introduction for gaming could have been a rough start
What went wrong? TLDR: Just about everything. Still, for how much of a rort this was they produced a quite decently manufactured product that was still ahead of the curve surprisingly. 🤷♂️

Is interesting that when they compared it with DS and PSP it seems so many people where sure that the PSP will win the portable market
Yeah, when I was young and asked for a DS, the guys at the game shop tried to talk my mum out of it because they thought the PSP was going to curbstomp the DS in the market.
I mean Sony was coming off back to back hits with the PS1 and PS2 which vastly outsold Nintendo's home consoles, so it really wasn't crazy to think that it would happen again. I had both, loved both, and the PSP was a great system to have.
When i saw it and heard about it it sounded so cool i still want to buy one till this day whats the problems with it?
Not bad. Although, the captions could use some work. There were some long periods where nothing was being shown in captions, but the video was still going. And near the end, the captions kinda rapid-fired off the epilogue at an impossible-to-read speed. Good video otherwise. Gonna miss watching you on UA-cam.
