Hey MD, i would put some protection on that sink when you take out the fish, or stick to the bucket. It would be a shame if some jump and go down the drain. Super cool setup tho :)
I once accidentally siphoned a rummy nose tetra into the toilet, luckily I had a miniature net and rescued him from the bowl.... He lives on happily to this day.... Miracle fish.... 🙂😯
@@thefifth6307 I call my white crowntail Falkor, he is so beautiful (and the best dad- you know what's awesome? A tub of white betta fry, they're so much easier to see, and so cute hunting baby brine shrimp!)
Just picked up a male 'white opal' betta a few days ago and have already got everything on the way to start a blackwater tank (which I didn't know existed until after buying the betta). First fish and tank I've had in maybe 20ish years, will be first ever blackwater.
Simply magical when you added the fish in slo-mo, along with the music...WOW...I have an old fiberglass boat in my back yard that I have made into a black water bog with goldfish...and I added a full size skeleton laying on the bottom among the sand and rocks and an empty rum bottle in his boney fingers, he has aged nicely with algae and the fish love hiding in his ribs, a fun garden project living the Florida tropical, pirate lifestyle...argh...
Floaters, nice! They are amazing, but almost equally annoying when doing maintenance. Plus they grow like mad. My one bit of advice is to add MORE botanicals, get that water good and black. Nice work MD.
Plastic media?.. I believe your filter would be around 400 times more effective (for real) if you looked in to some ceramic or sintered glass for the biological part of the filter.
Beautiful tank. I love the contrast of the bright tetras and the darker water. I'd personally put a few accent plants underwater, to me it feels a little top-sided right now..
Hi, just a tip, plastic media doesn’t work well in caniste filter. They work when they can move around freely, like in a sump. Ceramic media or one very pourous are better when not moving and in a canister.
Simple fish. Simple scape. It will shine like a star, once all those roots grow in. Just wondering if you have the time in your busy schedule of film making, fish scaping and family time, could you do some reviews of your fish interacting with the scapes. Like, what do the different kinds of fish prefer in the different scapes you offer them - and film their behaviour. In my experience with Ottos, they're much more active, when anubias or crypt are present for them to feed/cling to. But no so much the stem plants. I also know my Danios adored floating plants too, and used every opportunity to spawn in them, on the surface. Not so much the stem plants, again. My schooling Raspboras however, loved to dart in and out of stem plants, like it was an obstacle course for elite athletes. You have so many different fish and so many different scapes, I wonder what you've observed about their preferences, and what they tend to ignore.
OMG this was perfect timing. I LOVE what you did. It’s incredibly simplistic but beautiful. I’ve got some Orinoco angels and want to create a natural environment for them. I know how to do it but rather watch you do it 😂 the fish look awesome in there. 👍👍👍
Also, if you prefer to help them school a bit better, add a fish that will aggravate them a bit / larger size. A good example for something you could use that would go well in a blackwater tank are dwarf gouramis. Potentially you could use a betta, however, sometimes neons will fin nip bettas.
LOVE this! Neons are my next fish and I’m now inspired! I do have a question about the wood, though: why couldn’t I just forage some wood from around my neighbourhood and boil it? What’s the difference with this wood, vs found?
Great..i was planning on getting a tank with the same dimension(too cubical for my taste) . can plants like anubias grow well in black water with similar lighting? lil side experiment maybe?
I’d like to suggest some sparkling gourami as your next addition to this tank. They do well in black water and I think they would look beautiful in this tank

I love the tannin tank, especially with the Neons. With such a small amount of plants how can the algae be controlled? That is the only thing keeping me from trying this type of tank. Thanks
Reduced light from tannins helps with algae, still can be an issue, but getting low light plants is key, java fern, anubias, buce, frogbit for floaters.
Good thing you got meds. I don't think I've ever gotten a set of neons without them getting sick. And I've bought them from several different stores. I've even ordered them online.
Yeah neons are very fragile in my experience, cardinals seem more robust and penguin tetras even more so, if you can put up with the constant chasing of each other.
Wrong acclimatization! U have to open the plastic bag and put some tank water into that bag and repeat it 10 minutes later. So the fishes learn to know the tank water and the parameters . Only put the closed bag in and wait 30 minutes is the biggest shit. But most of people do that wrong method

Hi, I set up my first blackwater aquarium yesterday, using RO water and added some remineralizing salt to bring GH to 120 ppm. The temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, I added quite a lot of tannin liquid to get nice brown colour of water. I used an established mature filter from another fish tank. Added some catappa leaves. Driftwood is in there as well. All looked good, and I added three angel fishes there. Strong grown up species. All looked fine last night. Today early morning I found two of them dead, one in shock, almost dead. I quickly saved the last one bringing it back to the established tank. But why?? Checked the pH, it dropped, but not as bad. It was 6.1. I am shocked myself.
Have to say, I love that you did a blackwater tank! I was born and raised in NW Florida in the U.S., on what we call the Panhandle, directly on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico; and the Blackwater River flows about 70 miles away, between where I was born and where I went to college in Pensacola. I've canoed and swam in the Blackwater, watched gators slide into the river from the bank (the rangers will tell you that it's gator-free, but nope) and it's a truly beautiful place with water the color of tea and with the most delicious scent-- Cypress, Sweet Bay and Tupelo trees, all with their feet in the water. I don't know if this is the sort of place you're basing this tank on, but I wish you could see it; it's just amazing. So thanks for reminding me a bit of home!
MD, I’ve noticed you use fishing line to hang your LED lights above your tanks.... What pound test are you using and have you had any issues with the heat from the lamps affecting the fishing line? They look so clean just “floating” in the air!!!😎😎😎
Hi, like your videos and how you set up the tanks.. Can i ask how much that set up woukd cost.. I bought myself my first big tank, 125 L and i am really looking forward to settling it up.. What fish would you recommend.. I currently have Guppies in a 57 l tank and i am tthinking of transferring them over, so looking for tank mates.. Thank you for your advice and help in advance.. Have a good day..
Question about overcrowding. The golden rule of 1 inch of fish per gallon. The tanks look so much better like yours with lots. I counted like 50 neons and you said this was a 24 gallon minutes a bit from the top so let's call it 20ish. How are the tetras doing?
Anybody watching this, I would strongly advise not to introduce the fish to the new tank as he did. Drip acclimate, or you risk losing fish. Cause... that's how I lost fish. Just floated the bags.
Lol 65 usd?! In the states at least where I'm at those 2 pieces would cost 200 bucks a piece..the only fish store around my location that's worth a damn charges crazy prices for driftwood..I wish it was that cheap
If the plant bug won't stop itching, try some cabomba just loose in the tank. The stuff grows like crazy, can be planted or loose and provides tons of oxygen for the fish. Great way to export nutrients from the tank as well. Little more hiding space to boot.
I tried to make my tank blackwater by pouring almond juice in it but the tank's water will slowly turn back it's original clear color after 1-2 days, I dont know how to fix this, is it because my filter floss filtering out the tannins? *I don't use purigen*

More botanicals! There's never enough botanicals haha. That frogbit will get nice long roots for the neons to swim through but I bet a scattering of Anubias around the bottom would still look good. Anubias nana petits are doing very well in my black water tank.
I don't like tannins in my tank I like crystal clear water . Other than that I liked the set-up. Neons die to easily though never could keep them alive . I prefer Cardinal tetras and ember tetras are my favorite tetra .
Those wood pieces are at least $150 aud, aquariums aren't popular in Australia and aquascaping side of it even less so, makes everything so expensive I hate it
Very nice tank again of you MD 🤜🐟 If you "maybe" going to add some other small fish and you can get them The chocolate gourami can be a good idea with a chocolate zebra pleco they also stay small
Beautiful blackwater tank. Some long thick pothos/devils ivy wired to the wood maybe? A small school of glowlight tetra and a pair or two apistos would look sweet
You should have a pair of Apistogramma borellii "opal" as a centerpiece fish in the black water tank. It's really hardy and beautiful and the colors will fit right in with the neon tetras
