How to build a Tool chest

- In this video i go through the process of building a tool storage box / chest for storing hand tools. The chest i build in this video has a very basic design that can be scaled to any size. The layout of the tool storage inside the box is very flexible to allow for a wide array different sizes and types of hand tools, checkout the video to find out how.

I've watched this build project several times and I think anyone would enjoy having this tool chest. It's a practical and attractive piece, of generous proportions, that could adapt to many other uses - while not being expensive to make.
This chest definitely turned out looking nicer than i had thought, the timber really popped.
One change i would make is some sort of support for the lid to stop it cupping (bread board ends, captive panel or just some support sticks maybe), it hasn't moved much but enough to make the latches hard to close.
@@AussieWoodshed I know what you mean. I have a vintage (mid century modern style) drop-leaf table that had melamine tops. I replaced them with laminated boards for a nicer finish. I should have added indiscreet rails along the underside across the jointing to stop movement of the wood over the width of the drop leaves (about 20" on each side of the table). I should have known better. We live and learn.
When I say "stop movement", I mean cupping across the width of the jointed boards. A few screws through slightly elongated holes in underside hidden rails would hold the boards straight while allowing expansion/contraction. I'll add them and see what the result is over a year in all seasonal changes, which alter dramatically here in both temperature and humidity.
That idea of lining the straightedge against the square is so simple yet often overlooked, kudos

Its a really beautiful tool chest. Reminds me of those days when i was making one myself with limited tools and was optimistic that I will have more tools coming in future so i planned and kept space for the upcoming tools but now it is so crowded that i planning to make another such chest while considering the drawbacks of the old one. Your video is quite helpful and I really like the simplicity of it.

Great job, but I would prefer the hinge to be mounted inside. Nicer look. Yes, more work because you have to mortice it.

At 3:40 you mention to get the cut square across, but do you tilt the saw to match the dovetail ratio, following the line you marked, or?

Yes, square the cut across sawing maybe a few millimetres deep, then follow the line of the dovetail already marked.

Great tool chest with nice dovetails. What hardwood was the laminated boards? Where did you get them?
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video and the tool chest. The boards are Karri and i got them from Bunnings about 6 months ago. However i have not seen them on the Bunnings website since, so I'm not sure if they are still available.
where did you get the dovetail square thing you used for marking them?
I got it from beyond tools, a store in Perth. bit.ly/3rrP8xO . You can also use other dovetail marking jigs like these one bit.ly/3nFp8hj or bit.ly/3fC8ZVp (the 1:6 ratio is what i usually use if you go with this one) which have the dovetail angle and square combined in one making it easier to mark and align. Hope this helps
