(TITANIA McGRATH aka Andrew Doyle) WOKE JOKE: Why an SJW Satire Became a Twitter Phenomenon

  • Peter's guest this week is the creator of ‘Titania McGrath’, the satirical Social Justice Warrior parody account set up on Twitter by writer and comedian Andrew Doyle, formerly co-writer of the spoof TV reporter Jonathan Pie.
    Most commentators have heaped praise on Doyle, stating he stands as a 21st century member of Britain's proud satirical tradition that includes Jonathan Swift etc. But many in the "Woke" movement have denounced him and his creation, declaring it to portray a completely false image of their movement.
    Whilst McGrath describes herself as a "radical intersectionalist poet committed to feminism, social justice and armed peaceful protest," her creator describes her as "a militant vegan who thinks she is a better poet than William Shakespeare."
    Andrew Doyle writes for Spiked Online and appears on Sky news to discuss politics, news and culture. He has written and adapted many musicals and plays and he has performed numerous stand up shows, including at the Edinburgh Fringe.
    Peter and Andrew discuss 'woke culture', comedy and of course, Titania.

    "We all know these people"
    That's the frightening thing. I had started to sense... a little bit of it, about five years ago. But now it's everywhere; every social encounter, every group of friends, there will be at least one, often more than one. At this point, sitting at a pub with a group of people... especially if they're under 30... it's like there's always a Soviet political officer at the table, waiting for you to say the wrong thing, waiting to condemn you for your choice of words, for thinking the wrong way. And that's their only contribution; they have no opinions of their own, no original thoughts, no real passions.
    They are puritans, and if you demonstrate that you are ideologically impure, they will seek to punish you for it.
    And they think they're righteous. They think they're reasonable. They think that this is rational behaviour.

      That is a stupid idea. Why stop talking about something that has so many consequences? Essentially that is what the left is trying to impose. They want us to pretend that all races are the same, that race doesn't exist.

    • @grandmasterdrew63
      @grandmasterdrew63 4 роки тому +9

      @@spiritsplice incorrect. The left is the party of identity politics, they not only do not beileve nor acknowledge all races are the same but try and convince those whose ancestors might have been discriminated against in the past that they have a valid claim to be angry at those in the present who had nothing to do with said discrimination. This creates a victimhood mentality that brings us much further from racial unity then any past discrimination does and puts them in a mindset that limits the true potential of said individuals. It is also hypocritical as the Democratic party was the party of racism and slavery, google racist dixiecrats, these are the people that fought against ending slavery and fought for laws that strengthened segregation after slavery was abolished..... 99 % of them were democrats. They realized the climate was shifting though and couldn't continue on this racist path though so they created a narritive that slavery and the civil war was the fault of the white man, or the south. The truth is that it was a fight between those trying to continue slavery (the democrats) and those trying to stop them (the republicans).
      The year before the civil war started not one republican owned a slave. You won't learn this in textbooks but it is all factual information which I urge you to check for yourself.
      Sure there are still individual aholes out there who are racist as f$@k but there are no laws in our country that discriminate against any race or limit them from having every opportunity everyone else has. The only thing that limits them is telling them they are victims which might make them hesitant to persue the american dream.... feeling like the deck is stacked against them when it is not.
      This all stems from constantly talking about race. Not only is it not a stupid idea, it might be the most brilliant thing ever uttured about racial relations. You are of course entitled to your opinion but I urge you to consider what I've said and do your research as you are being lied to all in the interest of collecting more votes for the left.

    • @spiritsplice
      @spiritsplice 4 роки тому +1

      @@grandmasterdrew63 No. ALL politics is about identity. There is no way around it.
      " not one republican owned a slave."
      sigh. You are about 20 years behind the curve.
      "there are no laws in our country that discriminate against any race or limit them from having every opportunity everyone else has. "
      Yes there are. Affirmative action, quotas, etc are laws that discriminate against whites.
      "feeling like the deck is stacked against them when it is not."
      Nature stacked the deck against them. Low intelligence, low impulse control, short time preference, more violence, more crime, etc. That is what limits them, not your silly "Democrats are the real racists" nonsense. They can never achieve what Whites do in a White society because they don't have the hardware and they never will. The only solution is to return them to Africa. America is a White country, founded by Whites, FOR Whites. It is in the founding documents. Stop the Cuckservative LARPing and wake up to the fact that demographics is destiny.

    The only difference to a rational person between Titania's tweets and those of the other wokescolds is that the inherent contradiction in the philosophy is slightly easier to spot.
    For example, a real wokescold wouldn't say "punch people in the name of tolerance", they'd say something like "punch Nazis" with the reason that they're Nazis being that they're bigots, i.e., intolerant.
    It is the exact same hypocrisy though. It's just _very slightly_ easier to spot. It's also way more honest. I mean, the whole process of condemning people who disagree with you to the status of Nazi is simply so that they can arrive at a point where they can justify to themselves punching you in the name of tolerance.
    Titania's tweets remove the lie they're telling themselves. It doesn't do much for the rest of us, I mean, it's obvious to any sane person what they're doing right off the bat. So the message isn't made much clearer for us. It's the removal of the lie they tell themselves that makes the Left angry about the tweets.

    • @Emanresuadeen
      @Emanresuadeen 4 роки тому

      @fynes leigh No, it's not. Let's break it down. A sentence is complete if it has a *subject* (a noun), an *action,* (a verb) that the subject performs, and an *object,* (another noun) that receives the action of the subject.
      For example: Leigh kicks the ball. Leigh (the subject) kicks (the action) the ball (the object). "Leigh kicks the ball" is a complete and understandable sentence.
      Likewise, "Trolls trolling trolls" has a subject (Trolls) and action being performed (trolling) and and object receiving the action (trolls).
      If you know what "trolls" are, and what "trolling" is, the meaning is clear:
      _One group of trolls is preforming the action of trolling on another group of trolls._
      This might be clearer as a sentence, but it is also awkward, and boring to a reader. "Trolls trolling trolls" says the same thing grammatically, but using a bit of wordplay that some reader, not you of course, but someone else, may find amusing.

    This was brilliant, I actually couldn't help laughing even tho' the topics covered are quite serious and worrying, it's just that today's popular culture is at times so ridiculous, which is Andrew's point. Woke really deserves to be satirised more, as long as you can put up with the outrage from the real-life Titanias of this world. It was interesting that Andrew classified himself politically as Left but now finds his views are now more aligned with the Right on such things as free speech and free expression in general. I think there would be many, many people of a Liberal persuasion who would now find themselves more at home on the Right.

    My definition of ‘WOKE,’ verb: A recently identified psychological condition characterised by a malfunction of an individual’s offence detectors, resulting in a pathological hypersensitivity to the thoughts, statements, actions and feelings of those who have a propensity to think what they like, say what they think and tell the truth. The condition is most prevalent in those of a left-wing/liberal persuasion who find reality hard to bear and who are deluded into believing that their particular view of the world is correct. Examples of the condition can frequently be found among academics in the Liberal/Arts, students, journalists, socialist-politicians, serving police officers, the judiciary and most of the main stream media.

    "As soon as you throw an insult, you've lost." - I don't agree. That's like saying that as soon as you use profanity, you've lost. If your point has merit, it has merit despite the weaknesses and failings in the person who is arguing the point. I've encountered a lot of passive-aggressive sorts on the Internet whose sole line of argumentation is to get the other person (usually me at that time) as angry and frustrated as possible that the only response remaining is an insult. They won't cite their sources; they won't back up their claims; they make a lot of outlandish claims seemingly from their imagination; they twist whatever recognizable facts they present; they evade questions and sidetrack the discussion. Such people don't win the argument just because the other person slams them with an insult.
    "You don't show you like someone and approve of someone by having sex with them, do you? That would be an odd world." - I don't know that all of the Progressives (for, this is where SJWs originate) have caught on to this, but you have actually revealed a core principle of the most "woke" of them; everybody has sex with everybody, à la "Brave New World" meets Free Love. That's where the "Love is Love" campaign naturally goes; you show love through sex, and not having sex is not showing love. The goal of LGBTQAI is to turn the world into a homogeneous orgy, without regard to sex or gender or age or family relationship... and, if you follow "The Young Turks," you know it also is without regard to species. And, yes, it is and will be a very odd world!
    Progressives are highly debased, depraved, self-entitled and self-indulgent. They are revolutionaries intent on overturning all the established order, with themselves coming out on top; so, they are malcontents, disruptive and destructive, unmoored and actively opposed to all conventional standards. They condemn the past and all that was in it. It's dangerous that they have become socially popular, across all classes of society, holding positions of power in business and government.

    The reason the championing of Free Speech has shifted from the Classical Left to the Modern Right is that Free Speech is a counter-culture tool.
    When your ideology is the minority viewpoint you much be in favor of Free Speech in order to have any chance of going up against the majority. But when you're the majority viewpoint, Free Speech gives a voice to the minority that you'd rather not have a voice. Western culture was largely a conservative culture post-war but it slowly flipped to a liberal culture over time, was fairly balanced in the 1990s and became truly liberal-dominated around 2010. The left's requirement for Free Speech in the 1960s simply isn't needed now heading into 2020 when they are the majority media voice. And the Right that was more than happy to limit Free Speech a half-century ago is finding itself needing that same Free Speech to have any chance of survival.
    For us aging Liberals its been a bit of a system shock to witness the Left's abandonment to outright disavowal of Free Speech when for some of us we equated Free Speech to be a pillar of Liberalism. But its not, it never was, the Left and Free Speech just happened to coincide at the time of our political awakening. Which is why you'll hear modern Regressives referring to "Classical Liberalism" as allegedly part of the "Alt-Right". Its profoundly weird to find myself being lumped together with Nazis for no other reason than not believing liberal ideology is a holy orthodoxy where any disagreement is heresy.

      Mary Whitehouse was wrong, she should have been closing down the BBC.

    what he said about 20 minutes in reminded me of how on my tablet i read a lot of books and one day it said based on your reading you might like "girl power" and i was like wait why would it suggest that. I looked back and like 8 of the last 10 books i read had a female lead and I never really registered it by their gender just by me liking the story.

    I wish I saw this earlier. I was at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Had I known, I would have gone to see this show.

    it was the most fun thing about twitter ...getting something from titania each day. I liked her article in Guardian where she bemoaned that she couldn't call her book "my struggle" because it was already taken.
