Pandemic funerals: inside a mortuary during coronavirus
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 тра 2020
- The funeral industry has had to adapt to new regulations around death care during the pandemic at the same time as dealing with an increase in work. Poppy’s Funerals in south London is one provider that believes that public health concerns should not impact upon its ability to carry out its role with humanity and respect. The Guardian spent the day inside its mortuary to see how the firm and its staff have adapted to the new challenges they face. With thanks to Jeanne Rathbone and family

I will be attending my dad's funeral tomorrow and only five can be there to send him off.
This funeral looked lovely though, and done very respectfully and naturally. RIP to all those who have passed during this difficult time.
Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. All the best for tomorrow.

Update: Lovely day. Superb service, respectfully managed. Thank you for your thoughts and well wishes. Keep on reporting the important, under the radar stuff! x
so families can take someone to hospital and never see even their body again if it’s in a body bag. that’s heartbreaking
I can't believe you haven't already heard this . It has been going on since covid has been here.
My Aunt Karla passed and not one person in our family could attend the burial.
@@robinalexander1634 wow that's crazy
Hello Chelsey.
If you don't mind, try typing "Mayat Berbalut Plastik" (the aforementioned words are in Indonesia), and you'll see a picture of plastic-wrapped corpse in a hospital in Jakarta.
That's what you'll see from a COVID-19 dead person.

How people still believe this isn't a real threat is beyond me :(

My wife passed at the beginning of the year. It's a bit of a false comfort, but I'm glad that she has been spared all of this situation.
Thank you Guardian. People need to see this.
My condolences. 💜

@@Jkk55 Thank you, Jules. It's been several months now and I expect to be able to start moving on soon.
My utmost respect for morticians and funeral staff, especially during this time of sorrow.
Well done, to Poppy's Funeral Home and their staff, their very caring staff and to the mourners, who displayed great love and respect, at a time of great testing. RIP, Ian, whoever you were, are and will be. xx
That country is profoundly depressing. Just a handful of people show up. They put the body in a cardboard coffin. They dress like they are 'popping out to the pub'. They all looked like they'd rather be somewhere else. It's one messed up country. They have no sense of community or society.

I teared up a bit when the woman said the bit on our bodies carrying us through out lives so they deserve to be treated with care. Let’s not wait until we die to do this!

He said just to make him comfortable! That’s an amazing human emotion feeling, even in his type of job.
My dad died last month and we had a memorial on Zoom. Over 200 attended from around the country. We had a beautiful video a friend from our congregation made and we were able to speak to our friends in breakout rooms after the memorial, some staying an hour and a half. It was wonderful, and my dad would have loved it.
Fr what congregation are you, sis/bro?

I think embalming and caskets should be banned for various reasons but mainly completely unnecessary and costly.
If the body is wrapped in a shroud, covered with flowers petals and buried in a shallow grave within two days, which helps with rapid decomposition , it is much more natural and respectful.
Thank you Guardian for showing real news
David t you barely know what's really going in the world
Lol
To ALL COVID19 victims: May your souls rest in peace. I'm terribly sorry that this has happened to you🕆🕊💕.
This hits home. I've discovered so many families and friends that quickly passed without recognition prior of their illness with this virus.
I had never seen a carboard coffin before. Its...surreal.
Its big in England. More people are choosing natural funerals where they can biodegrade naturally.
Looked like a standard cremation box
My Father was cremated in a card board coffin 20 years ago! He didn't want any fuss and to make it as cheap as possible! Now it is the fashion and the prices have gone through the roof!
I had never seen something like it
My dad was cremated in a box like that, they switched his body from a display coffin after the service
I love the idea of natural burials. No chemicals. Just family, friends, and nature. Beautiful.
An unpleasant job at the best of times made even worse. So sad that the families aren't even able to gather in large groups to bury their relatives. Everyone needs to work together to get through this crisis as soon as possible.
@@C33P Wow. Reading your comment really brought it home to me. No parent should ever have to bury a child. Your mum is a hero, doing a hard job. Wish her all the best.

@@Abraham_Tsfaye 'The wise speak when they have something to say and the fools, when they have to say something'
We generally have open caskets over here, unless it was a bad accident. Have a wake with the body on display in the house, touch the hands and face. There's going to be a bigger disconnect when more of the burials are closed casket, if not all of them.
My heart goes to these men& woman who have this job caring for the loved ones who died from COVID
I love that they can use cardboard boxes as coffins.
I'm very sorry for all of these people's losses
You all did the best you could do under the circumstances. One thing, you maintained the dignity of the departed and for the family.
What beautiful ppl, what a gift they are to the world. Thank you. Thank you for sharing for filming & sharing their stories🙏💗

Humanity and respect. Thank you Poppy and team. And they're people with names. Not "the deceased".

True
Good journey, Ian. Well done, Guardian. This puts things in perspective for me.
Same . Hope everybody stays safe doing their job . Getting covid is a bummer .
😭 This is heart breaking 😭
That is moving in a way that is almost profound. I wish we as a world society would move away from big pompous funerals and expensive metal caskets and embalming and just accept death for what it is.
the funeral industry is one hugescam. A crew of removal men will take an entire households worth of furniture and possessions from one town, to another one 50 miles away, in one day, and charge £1600. A gang of shady funeral directors charge 7 1/2 grand to move one dead body 12 miles up the road. Its like estate agents, "industry standard" rip off prices for doing sweet eff all
So true, the person is DEAD now no need to waste previous money on expensive funerals. Use that money on the LIVING to carry on living.
Yeah I don't like the frilly satin lining in caskets either. They don't disintegrate, and the chemicals are bad.
There’s a prison in Louisiana and they make beautiful wooden caskets and create a beautiful wooden cross on top. I think it’s $200-300. That’s what I want.
Seriously ??? I dont care ...i want to be buried properly ...the way it should be ..Proper casket and a proper buriel...the way it should be ...End off!!!
This how a funeral should be done in these difficult times with great respect to the people who hv to deal with us when we are gone.
That was so beautifully done
Thank you for your services to your community be safe amen.
I remember being terrified for my father's funeral. My steps felt like led walking up the stairs, I kept flinching at everything, my legs felt completely numb once we got to the room, like they were going to collapse from under me. Standing at the door being unable to walk into the room. Then when I finally made it to his body I couldn't bring myself to touch him. I didn't want to remember his cold touch when my last memory was of his warm hug. I had to be strong for my mom and tbh I was still in so much shock. I didn't want to accept that my daddy, the man who was my shield and sword in this cruel world was gone
So sorry for your loss! 🙏
Sorry for your loss ❤
Why am I watching this while in a state of depression.....
I asked myself the same question!
I guess unconsciously, you wanted to feel your pain more. But I hope this video somehow made that you are not alone. Depression is something a lot of people feel & we share nowadays. But keep on living.. Have a nice day! 😊
Its not unhealthy to be curious. But on a sidenote.I hope u are ok and not alone being depressed.Stay safe.Kind Regards Luïsa
The funeral was beautiful. Natural and in so doing, gave back to the earth but still remained part of the cycle of life. I thought the chap preparing the deceased was a very pleasant man. He inspired confidence and his attitude was of that of a family friend. Poppy, reassuring, friendly and capable is who I would like my funeral director to be though, hopefully, many years away.
I lost my Dad in June, not covid related,my brother and sister didnt tell me until it was too late to say goodbye,Dad had gone when I got there 5 mins after call then not being able to go to chapel of rest either..heartbreaking,will never forgive my 'family'
Sorry for your loss.

Totally agree 💯, read the scriptures and find hope now for the future to come.👍🙏🏼
My first funeral was this month. Saying goodbye to a loved one this way seems normal to me in covid times. Next week I will be saying goodbye to my Nanna too. This is heart breaking but we are making sure she gets the best send off. The other person was her brother❤️ they are together again now❤️
Lots of respect for this line of work
Formerly known as a pyre. B4 there was 8bil.
Thank you Guardian! Very respectful presentation!!
What amazes me about this video is that how careful and how everyone is about COVID 19 but not one person in this video is wearing a mask.
That's because the deceased cant cough or sneeze so no airborne risk.
So true 😳😳😳
Deceased still infections!!!
This person did not die from covid. Hence no wearing of masks.
@@chrisjess1569 Still the people that are all working there in close quarters and not social distancing.
In the USA I hope there will be more Eco Friendly Cemeteries..I'd like an Eco Burial with a tree planted over me rather then cremation and leaving a carbon footprint..Blessings for all who have lost their lives and caretakers who so thoughtfully prepared the deceased..Thank-You The Guardian..
I wish it was like this in the USA 🇺🇸
As a funeral director we do our best to make sure your love one is cared for with the highest respect and dignity, just as we want our own family to be respected .
A very sensitive presentation.
It is like a movie scene! How things have changed. RIP
Oh just hug each other. Stop being controlled. You're not in prison
And spread this deadly virus 😠. If you like you do that.
I'm inclined to agree- if you're really worried or particularly at risk then stay at home for your own sake. For myself, I've never stopped hugging- it's like a tango..... takes two!
I want to live
@@Moonbutton61 Look at the numbers. Assuming you're healthy otherwise, it is highly unlikely you will even catch this disease. If you do, it is even less likely you'll have major complications. And if you do, it is even less likely you'll die from it.
You are very literally more at risk from driving or breathing in polluted air than you are of Covid.
The OP is correct - just hug each other. First, they are likely family members and have already been around each other. Second, it's a funeral of someone they loved and continue to love. At some point, the need to be human trumps the ridiculously low risk of contracting this disease.
I've been working the entire time this has gone on, and I'm a funeral director / embalmer. I have taken no extra precautions other than what I usually do - sometimes less so because the personal protective gear was simply not available since the general public got scared and bought all of it so we couldn't. The numbers of serious problems / deaths for those who remained working, like me, has been and remains very very low. This is likely because we are exposed to all kinds of pathogens on a normal daily basis and our immune systems just simply work.
I've buried my grandfather due to covid. He died at night and at the mourning me and my mom found out. It was the most painfull experience that i've been through.
My mother passed last June, once I live across the country my sister told me that I didn’t have to come because of the virus, but I told her that the was no way I wouldn’t be there. There wasn’t more than 10 at her funeral. The funeral home was very helpful during the time.
My thoughts are with you all..
Very professional and caring service from Poppy's and very sympathetic footage. I didn't hear an explanation as to why the previous funeral had between 40 and 50 mourners yet theirs was only allowed 10. Having experienced bereavements in my own lifetime, I can see how covid has impacted the industry and the bereaved. Not appropriate to express opinion here but my sympathies go out to those affected by it.
My They All RIP 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🌹❣️❣️💞🙏❣️❣️❣️❣️
Why didn’t they wear masks whilst handling the body?
The gentleman didn't die from covid but I believe they mentioned that they cover up when it is an infectious case
A body doesn't cough or breathe.
The dead don’t cough it isnt like ebola..
I hope Jamaica will take note because usually our funeral here cost so much including elaborate boxes going under the earth never to be seen again for anywhere between $500,000 to over a $1,000,000 for funeral packages. Not to mention repass, setup and a host of other expenses. Let us take care of ourselves and look out for each other
Totally agree 💯 don't waste money on the dead unnecessarily, use it for the living that still has to carry on.
My family own a funeral business and have had to expand premises and staff they can’t keep up with the bodies
Can't imagine myself being buried in a giant shoe box
? A box is a box whether its wooden or cardboard..
When are people gonna start blaming China for this?????????????????????????????????
Well said its like the whole world has rolled over and accepted this when China should be condemned and should compensate the world.

I have seen someone buried in a box like this. Its always been caskets
My daughter thought that the coffin like a pizza box. We had my dad with military service and buritl not in a pizza box.
The public needs to be informed. The truth doesn’t hurt
I was unable to make it to my uncle's funeral... because of this..
I want the cardboard coffin too.
I attended a funeral yesterday and it had like 100s of people and most weren’t wearing masks! 😡 Plus they were sitting close to each other!
So you cant touch a casket but they dont have mask on😷
True, very weird 🤔
They need to be wearing Masks Period, Covid or Not..

I think it's cruel to have a loved one die and you can't have a funeral or church service!!!! It delays the grief process!!!
I see no one wearing masks in the video, even though it’s late to comment, sorry 😞
The new set of rules are hard to swallow. It’ll take time. My last sister went to the e r in March, died in May.
I never saw again. She died alone too. Well done, thanks for that!

I like Poppy
Silly question if someone dies from covid right and he or she was a Dona would the organs still be suitable for transplant ?
(Dead bodies are usually heavy he was light though 🥱or you guys are fit )
Just love the Britts, even though attending a funeral, they keep their sence of humour with respect, 👍❤

I'm very surprised that they aren't wearing masks when handling the bodies!
I also noticed. During this pandemic, I have stopped listening to people, doctors, and government officials and looking at what they do.
"And I saw the dead, small and great standing before the throne, and the dead are judged according to what they have done" Revelation 20:12
That’s a cardboard box? They are meant to be buried in that? In the US, we cremate in boxes like that and bury in wooden or metal coffins, among other kinds of resting boxes, if you will. That’s different from what I’ve known. In the end all that matters is they are resting peaceful and the family is happy and content.. I enjoyed watching this. The time we are in now is quite worry some. Thank you.. Peace, Health and love to all.
Shannon Bliayang it is what the deceased person has requested before they die! To be buried in a cardboard coffin!
Some people don’t think it is necessary or they don’t want to spend a lot of money on their funeral!
In the end it is what the deceased wanted!
Laura Marroun completely understandable.. thanks for the information. 😉
Make him comfortable don't think he'll be bothered much
Please up date this and tell us all about the people who dies because they did not have their treatable illnesses treated or diagnosed and not from covid.
Cadê as máscaras deles,no meio da pandemia
Never seen any1 in a cardboard box b4 and ive been 2 lot of funerals😞
kelly sheppard we’ll know you have!! The deceased person probably requested it before he died. Because a lot of people don’t want an expensive funeral!! They say, it is a waste of money!! And it is their decision that is made before they pass on!! And the family respects their decision!!
And does what they have requested. Some people don’t want flowers put on top of their coffin either!! They request that no flowers to be bought and put on top of their coffin because the flowers are so expensive and a waste of money too!! The family have to honor their loved ones final wishes!!
@@lauramarroun6157 i wasnt being funny i think its much better especially if your being cremated no need 4 expensive funeral i just had never heard of or seen it b 4

Why aren't they wearing masks tho, they must all live together ?
If Pmart teams verify deaths how is this done and who certifys death
Business must be booming
Sad times. I was livestreaming from Hyde Park on Sunday with piers corbyn was there and he somehow thinks there is no pandemic.
@Frank Zappa an usually high number are dying.. All causes totalled
@III-GabeN-III who's to say that wouldn't have happened had there been no restrictions on people's lives? If everything had carried on as normal the death toll would be much higher and hospitals wouldn't be able to treat non covid patients. Those deaths because non covid patients can't be seen would have likely happened either way but people like you are just using it as a way to say the restrictions and lockdowns aren't right
@III-GabeN-III and once this is all over you'll stand on your high horse saying "look people didn't die like the predictions said" even though the reason people didn't die was because of the quarantine, it's a catch-22 situation...
