As John Anderson stated "you can't get good public policy without a good argument"
When debate is shut down our collective freedoms are lost.

I think of John Anderson as a father figure, but he's a big younger than I am and we probably sat for the HSC the same year. I'm sorry his attempt to return to politics has been derailed, but what he does with these podcasts is probably more important. I'm proud to subscribe to this channel.

America started down the road to mimicking China' dictatorial bent when the neo liberal free market destroyed the working class and turned those who would once have been dressmakers or machine operators are now spilling out the doors of our universities as tick a box psychologists and the like. All full of their own importance and lacking any humility.

People should be wary of working from home. If your work can be done remotely, it can be done from anywhere and there are likely human resource options "offshore" that are much, much cheaper. Your presence, in person, should be seen as a necessity.

As a populist politician, Trump panders to racists, religious bigots and anyone who can vote, to gain supporters but is he racist or religious? Probably not. That sort of issue doesn't interest him, because he is totally obsessed with gaining personal power and wealth for himself, so he and Trump Inc. can be above the law and able to make as much money as they possibly can from any immoral, unethical, crooked/criminal activity he wants to pursue. His most defining characteristic is that he seems to place no limit on how far he is willing to go, legal or illegal, to get money for himself.

The Labour Party was always a “Jam Tomorrow “ party. I grew up in the London Docks. I’m 78. The working class have always been despised in the UK. We the working class who are far from stupid (that’s why they hate us) have seen today coming for decades now. We have no representation except the vote as a protest voice. People in glass houses should be careful throwing stones. Trump is a builder. ‘Trade’ to the Posh! He voiced, crudely or not, the fears of workers and we like him. It’s our frustration that says ‘🖕to you’. We are THE most tolerant of peoples as we are all ‘mongrels’ as my dad would say. We have taken in everybody. We know however that the reason they are flooding the country with migrants is to drive down wages and break up communities. I have a book called ‘Slavery in Ancient Greece’ (left by my daughter who studied The Humanities) which says “chose slaves of different cultures and beliefs so they can’t plot against you”.

His point about housing is right on. Countries like the US and especially Australia and Canada have absurd amounts of empty land. In the US there's something like seven acres per person and Canada and Australia are both probably ten times that. Yet government planners prevent that land from being used. Those restrictions drive up the price of housing. They're essentially manufacturing poverty by making housing a Soviet-style command economy (complete with Soviet-style shortages).

In about 1982, I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology course at a community college in Oakland, CA, as a prerequisite for nursing school. The instructor - Urion Gallin-Galler- told our class that he did not give any student less than a grade of C, if they earned a D or F, they would still get a C grade. I was absolutely flabbergasted! So this actually started at least 40 years ago where a student who got a D or F in ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (of all things) would/could still be admitted to nursing school. Excuse me, but am I crazy for expecting any medical professional to have a good understanding of the human body?!? Educational standards have consistently been lowered since then and appear to have gone completely off the rails.

So WHY is Donald Trump an awful person? WHAT has he done that is so bad? Maybe you dont like his personality, but in fact he is known as kind and caring - despite there might be rough parts of his personality. When you say he is awful you really ought to explain yourself. Too many people get away with saying that. Prove it. What he DID for America is what counts.

But I doubt you care, because it's easier to hate and scream racist. Just because the media and lifers in the bureaucracy (who he was threatening to) wrote books doesn't mean they were true. Trump loves this country and despised those who were trying to destroy it - like the people you vote for.

For certain types of New York Jewish liberals voting Republican is like losing a limb. But for the good of the polity, and his own self-respect and consistency, he has to make that self amputation.

It was interesting to see the clarity of thought in what Mr Kotkin had to say, but his off-the-cuff slams against Trump are jarring. Just as one example, the charges of dog whistles, white supremacy and racism against Trump takes a fully blindered intellect to swallow.
Trump won many awards from Black orgs before running for office. Trump was beloved in Black popular culture (as one example, many Rap songs celebrate Trump’s persona and success). As President, Trump pursued many policies to help the Black community. And, though indirect, the pro-America US econ policy gave a lot of Blacks good jobs and sharply increased prospects.
Yet, starting from day-1 of the Trump Admin, the media repeated continuously a Big Lie of Trump hatred of Blacks. If repetition of propaganda is enough to cloud Mr Kotkin’s judgment, well, I’ll say no more.
To consider Trump a paragon, sure, it’s a bit much. Not to see that he is an immense force in the correct direction calls your intellectual creds into question …. in my opinion.

This is the worst elites in world history. The entire point of elites, or at least aristocracy (and monarchy) is to represent and imbue onto society values that the plebs see as important. Its to actually have elites with skin in the game. America's elites have absolutely zero skin in the game because they're so delusional, they don't even think they're elite. Its an inversion of reality, one look at the average actor in Hollywood says it all. To them, especially the Boomers, there will forever be some "evil" right wing they're trying to fight. I heard recently journalist Michael Tracey tell of his experience going to a Juneteenth event hosted by Chuck Schumer's office where only 50 people showed up, in NYC, and he pointed out how bizarre it was that during Schumer speaking, he was telling the mainly black audience of 50 people in a public park, that they're going to "fight the power". The compounding delusions of grandeur in America never fail to shock me.

    • @nonfictionone

@@michaels4255 as long as big business funds politicians then politicians work for... big business. The idea of democracy is that they work for their constituents, NOT the few ‘owners’ of course. A US Politician recently retired and said when he shaved every morning he asked himself ‘what are ten things I can do for my donors today’. Thus democracy is not functioning while big business is allowed to fund politicians (as can be seen as ‘the working man’ has suffered steadily reducing income for decades). So I don’t think we should try and compete with the oligarchs funding, it needs to be stopped. Step two: they have to pay some tax like the rest of us (because funnily enough they have designed the system so that they alone don’t pay any).

From Oswald Spengler's "The Decline of the West" in 1918 to James Burnham's remarkable works "The Machiavellians" (1943), "Suicide of the West" and "The Managerial Revolution" (1941), to Howe & Strauss "The Fourth Turning" in the 90s, to Peter Turchin more recently, it all runs in cycles. This is the end of a much, much longer cycle, Kotkin isn't wrong about the return to medieval times, however, zoom out & perhaps America's constitution was built for this very outcome. A collapsing empire needs something to fall back on, or else it will end up with a split between Western & Eastern Rome, and degenerate into feudal warlords in the Western half for 1,000 more years. Except that the founding fathers came up with the solution in advance. Just adhere to its origins and the promise of America can be restored.
