In this video, I will show you how to install spark plugs in a Honda Accord.
NOTE:
Do not put anti-seize on the spark plug thread. Car manufacturers don't put anti-seize when building the engine. NGK specifically tell customers not to put it on. Doing so will allow for over torquing of the spark plug. The torque spec specified is for installation without anti-seize.

Anti-seize
NGK spark plugs feature what is known as trivalent plating. This silver- or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without the use of anti-seize. NGK tech support has received a number of tech calls from installers who have over-tightened spark plugs because of the use of anti-seize. Anti-seize compound can act as a lubricant altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage.

Good video, but ALWAYS double check your gaps on “pre gapped plugs” keep in mind people return spark plugs all the time for different reasons & they could throw off the gap or they can not be gapped correctly from jump. The gap tool is usually less than 3.00$ & can even fit on a keychain in your toolbox/drawer 👍🏾
@@jack8356 That's a great way to insure you're not getting plugs that may have been used, but it's still not 110% guaranteed that the plugs will be properly gapped. Shipping boxes get dropped, bumped, and even tossed by people loading the delivery vehicles, or the store employees who are unboxing the cases and loading their shelves. Double checking the gap on a spark plug only takes about 5 seconds of your time, so, regardless if you have a 4 or 6 cylinder engine in your car, checking gap on all plugs going into your engine will take less than one minute. Don't always assume that things are always going to be the way they are supposed to be when you get them, regardless what it may be that you are buying. The big bad world we live in, is far from perfect.
Looks so easy . I just asked my mechanic to replace the spark plugs on my 2010 V6 Accord while he's changing out the timing belt. He's very reliable and honest so I'm not getting overcharged for such a simple job

Dude. Thank you for posting this. The tip with the tape? Awesome! The tape broke but to get the socket out I just put it back on the spark plug and screwed it back out and I was able to get my socket back. Then I used gorilla tape. 😎. It can only be a single ply though; or else the socket won’t fit in the spark plug hole. 😬

Oil on the plug may be a sign of the piston ring going bad which can be a serious issue (resulting in raw fuel dumping into the catalytic converter, etc. I'm not a mechanic, but I would ask one about that... As far as the coils, generally speaking the coils should last way longer than the plugs, far as I've heard.

As a retired truck fleet mechanic, where we put “never cease “ grease on everything, have you ever had plugs difficult to get out, which might rip out the threads, and to prevent this issue you might coat the threads with this product. I used to use it years ago before electronic ignition. Just wondering

Hey Tom...I had the same question you had about anti-seize grease. I did some research and the new spark plugs have advanced coatings on the threads to help prevent seizing and the general consensus is not to use the anti-seize grease anymore.
Love your videos and figured I would learn from this, even though I do not have the same car. I agree with the comments from juiced71. What are your thoughts about use of anti-seize on plug threads? Personally I think it a good idea but am unsure about the affect on torque specs.
My biggest surprise was that you made no mention of keeping the same order of replacement for coils but, more importantly, you in no way examined the old spark plugs for indications of issues. I always examine each carefully as the one chance to see hands-on how the cylinders are behaving. If there is an issue, it usually shows on the spark plug.
My compliments on the clean engine, by the way. Thanks for your efforts.
With regards to putting anti-seize on the thread, I know there are two groups of people with one that don't and the other that do. I know NGK manufacturer themselves say not to use it. But funny thing is the Honda Service Manual does mention to apply anti-seize on the plug thread. With the anti-seize, it will surely help removal after +100k miles. The main thing is to torque it down to proper spec, and that way it won't be too loose, and not too tight to cause possible damage. As for checking the condition of the spark plug, I did check (off camera) and they were in great shape, but should have mentioned it in the video. Thanks for your comment!

Great,mi need to do this on my 2012 Honda. That Honda engine IMO best 4 cylinder engine In the world. Why Honda quit making it is beyond me. We see how long 1.5Ts last. I usually use aluminum anti-seize compound on spark plug threads on aluminum headed engines. What’s you thoughts on that?

The manufacturer of the spark plugs don't recommend putting anti-seize because that will act as a lubricant altering the torque spec during installation. That's why Honda also do not put anti-seize on it. It's up to you if you want to.

Hi! I’m going to change them in my Honda but I’m also trying to change my fuel filter since my car is giving me start problems. I’ve been trying to find the location of the filter but I couldn’t find it and there’s no much information about it in UA-cam or at least I haven’t found it yet. Can you tell me where is located please ? That will help me a lot since I live far from family and friends and I can’t afford my car is not working to move me 😫
The fuel filter is in the fuel tank on the 8th Gen Honda Accord

You shouldn't use your tq wrench to loosing up bolts etc
Even tho they are new plugs it's still a good idea to check the gap never know one might have been dropped from the factory and put back in the box
I myself would put a little anti seize on the spark plug threads with the aluminum heads they probably say don't do that because it might change tq values but it sure makes it easier coming out

Not a problem at all. Always like to have people share their experiences. That's how we all learn. Let me respond to couple of the points. The wrench I used to loosen the bolt is an extendable wrench and not a torque wrench. I agree not to use torque wrench to loosen things. Also good idea to check the gap before installing the plugs as it takes very little time. @@dial2fast I always use inch pound torque wrench when I can. Why? Torque wrenches are calibrated within + or - 1. So, foot pounds torque wrench’s are less accurate. It’s takes 12 in pounds to equal 1 foot pound.

I have a 2010 Accord with 165k miles on it. Do you recommend changing Ignition Coils along with the Spark plugs? your response will be appreciated.
You typically don't change the coil unless they start failing. Also I don't recommend using aftermarket coil as they tend to fail prematurely. OEM coils are more expensive but that's also why you shouldn't change it until it fails.
What size is that spark plug socket? I have one that's too small (and also I don't know where I put it, because I'm a boomer, but i take pride in being an edge boomer)
To me, everyone wants to do things in a hurry, This is not a job where assembly line thinking should apply. Surely, you can run into less problems by opening each spark plug hole one at a time and taking time to replace everything back where it came from. But i do like your video. What was the torque spec. on these plugs?
Assembly line makes much more sense in general. Much less time wasted swapping tools, changing sockets etc. Plus, you only need to remember things once instead of four times ... did you check the gap on the second plug? If you did them all at once you would know for sure.

The grease you are talking about is dielectric grease to keep moisture out of electrical connections. If you don't have rust or moisture issue, you don't need it.

the spark plug won't attach to the 5/8 socket after i unscrew it. The spark plug is unscew by the socket wrench, but won't attach after for me to pull it out.
the 5/8 socket doesn't have a rubber inner, i'm guessing that's why it didn't catch the spark plug.
Using a spark plug socket, you will not have this problem. It has a foam rubber lining and will hold the spark plug fast so you can pull it out without a problem. Obviously important to have when changing plugs.
Hi! After doing the job I got a check engine light, any idea what it could be?
There are many possibilities. It could be as simple as you need to reset the light by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes. Or it could be one bad wire causing an occasional misfire that the sensor is picking up. If it's running fine the easiest thing to do is drive it to your local Advance Auto store and ask them to hook their computer to it. Some auto parts stores don't carry a computer that will work for these years of Honda Accords so Advance is best. If it's not running and you still have your old plugs then put them back on if your vehicle was running prior. Then drive it to Advance unless you have a computer yourself. This would be quicker than having to check every possibility if you're not an experienced mechanic.

Your valve cover gasket has a leak and should be replaced.

Platinum tip plugs are 100k

You don't need to put dielectric grease on the plugs. The factory never puts it on. The purpose of dielectric grease is to keep moisture, and dirt out to prevent corrosion. It doesn't increase conductivity. The ignition coil tube is not directly exposed to the outside environment. Therefore it does not need it.
@@dial2fast But i do believe it helps insulate the electricity from escaping the coil/plug. As well as depending on how often you change these the coil can get really stuck to the plug. I dont usually add dielectric grease. But i guess depending on the situation. I would also hate for it to cause an issue as well. If used, use sparingly.

@@Tech-Nerdiest spark plug sockets have rubber rings inside to hold the plugs as u pull them up. There is usually 2 sizes of these sockets and they are separate from other sockets in most ratchet sets.

Kareem M no, you can use a rachet wrench. There will be instructions to tighten it either by 180 degree or from 12 o clock to 6 o clock after you hand screw it into the plug.
Every single honda accord i see the plastic covering the spark plugs is warped. What a shitty design putting plastic on something that gets hot.

Not always. Denso is what Honda put in these from the Factory.
I just called and asked myself. The part number he listed is the original equipment that was put in the car by Honda.
